DS Misc > Wifi-enabled homebrew games are empty!

#94511 - strongesthylian - Tue Jul 25, 2006 3:18 am

So we have wifi games that involve playing with other people. But no one ever goes on to play these games!

What is the point of creating these multiplayer online homebrew games if there's no one to play with, other than experience for the authors of these games?

Would it be a good idea for someone to make some sort of database, where people can get together to play these games together?

Perhaps an addition to the wifi lib (or just a seperate bit of code, since it's a rather obscure feature) that sends a message to a server (ndshb, perhaps, for the sake of centralization?) which keeps track of people trying to play online games.

And... what game do you want to play?
Perhaps we can schedule something :)

I was just thinking about this the other day. The creator of Explosive Gas and A Touch of War has created a server-side application that shows when a game is being hosted, maybe someone will use it to create a dsmeet-ish type site for homebrew wifi games.

http://atouchofwar.com/tools.php

EDIT: Wow, I think that is EXACTLY what Picklesworth was talking about...

Let's see:

A Touch of War
Explosive Gas
Blubb

are 3 wifi homebrew DS games I can think of. Any more?
I wanna see 8 players doing Explosive Gas.

If any of you wanna play with me, my contact info is in my profile.

I would play online, but my damn-expensive Nintendo USB-connector broke, and I don't want to go upstairs where our other AP is to play.

I would play online, but I lend my ds to a friend, and returned the other ds I was using for testing to another friend. :)

A Touch of War is a little more complicated to setup a game, since the host player needs to be online sitting in his 'lobby' waiting for a player to join since there's no join in progress, and odds are no one is sitting around with a ds turned on running atow refreshing the server list waiting for a game to be hosted. The best bet would be to coordinate a game with a friend, ask someone in IRC, or post a day/time you're going to run a server in the chat room on my site, and hope someone sees your message and joins your game. And, of course, you need to be forwarding port 9999 to your ds if you want to host.

With Explosive Gas, Lynx has been making life a bit easier by running a server almost constantly, that way people that want to play don't need to worry about port forwarding, and they can at least constantly kill lynx's zombie player while they wait for new players to join.

And ya, I've never played explosive gas with more than 5 players, I'm curious to see if it works with 8 :) Let's set up "Homebrew Wednesday's" and all get together to play some of these games at, say, 7pm EST every week... or at least this week...

Jimmy

Excellent, sounds like we almost have an 8 player game going :) I'll have to get my ds back... otherwise I can play with my ultra-beta(almost no graphics) PC version :) But even if I don't get it back, I can guarantee the guy who has it will be joining in as well.

brennan, I am using that code, if you hit 'join game' in either Explosive Gas or AToW, you should get a list of currently running hosts. Actually, I just threw together a web page so even without a ds you can check if anyone is hosting. http://www.atouchofwar.com/Servers.php

thundrestrike, ouch, 6am for a game... hopefully people will stick around for a while if you get up later :)

Feel free to assemble in my chat room, http://www.atouchofwar.com/Chat/ before/after/around the time of the game, in case there's any need to coordinate anything, not that there should be.

Jimmy

quick edit: thundrestrike, the latest version is on my site, but up to now, all versions I've released work together so you don't absolutely need the latest, but I've fixed a few client-side only bugs that make it nicer to have it.

#94764 - thundrestrike - Wed Jul 26, 2006 1:59 am

6am? i thought it was 6PM ?

Anyone that doesn't know how to port forward: http://bcminer.atspace.com/nitro/portforwarding.html
(that might be a crappy tut if you don't use a 2WIRE router, but oh well)

This might be a little more helpful, as it gives specific instructions for many routers/firewalls

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

So, select your router and pick whatever you want from the list (example, 1st SMTP server) Just remember that you need to forward 9999 to the IP address of your DS displayed on the Join/Join LAN/Host menu screen and not the port they list on the specific page.

Hey guys, if you're playing Explosive Gas, make a jump to

That way, we can talk during games.

I also had the idea of some sort of Ventrilo server, but I don't know who'd be able to host it, because I can't.

If any of you wanna use Teamspeak when we play, I found a public server that we can use. It's called "(Goat Public)". Its IP is 68.178.169.45:8767.
I made a channel called "Explosive Gas". The password is "jimmy".
If there is no channel, then create it in that way. I hope to see you in four hours!

I know the bandwidth thief's password, and he isn't here, so I'm in :)

A quick request, too:
Please, never, ever use Azureus if you are operating on a network. It may look nice, but really, all you need is a simple bittorrent program like the one that comes with Ubuntu Linux (sorry, forget the name... just labeled as BitTorrent. Probably built into Gnome).
Sure, it's simple and doesn't have fancy graphs or a fancy name or many download options, but it's also fast and it doesn't destroy your network.
Azureus, on the other hand, seems to hog every bit of bandwidth it can get its hands on even if it's only downloading at 1 kB/s. Not only that, but it seems to cause so much havok to my network that the router is taking a minute to even return DNS information and DHCP has stopped working. (And I think it killed a gerbil).

I tried joining in, but I couldn't stay connected for long. Eventually it would just sort of freeze up. Seemed like it just dropped too many packets.

Also, on a side note, Azureus is a fine BT client. If it seems like it's hogging all the bandwidth when downloading at 1kb/s it's probably because it's actually choking your upstream. Limit the number of connections and throttle the bandwidth - especially the upstream. Then you should be okay. If your buddy won't do it or doesn't know how, you could probably just sneak on and do it for him. I doubt he'd ever notice the difference, but I'm certain that you would.

#94957 - thundrestrike - Thu Jul 27, 2006 12:53 am
