DS Misc > Demotica System-alike

#95535 - Lick - Sun Jul 30, 2006 3:11 am

I've been planning to do a Demotica system (without all the demotica stuff though :P) for the DS. Something you see in a lot of movies:
* Wake up in the morning *
* Turn on DS *
* You hear 'Good morning <your name>!' *
* ' Today will be a hot day!' *
* 'News headlines: <insert news>' *
* 'Your mailbox has 3 new messages!' *
* 'Nothing planned for today.. <random tip>' *

Would this be cool? The main focus will be presentation and sound. Perhaps I'll ask for voice actors in the end.

Any input is welcome!

Update #001
Okay, I started working on the project, 60% of the time because I still have the game project going on.
A) What I currently need is a great artist who can make the user interface look a bit like the PSP menu, but with nicer icons (, I'm aiming for the Konfabulator look as the default, but as the system will be skinnable, any style will do.)
B) Need to come up with a good name. Currently I'm going to use "DS Live!" as the developmentname. Any suggestions?

it's be nice if ds organise displayed a summary of the days calendar things and rss's of news and weather in the top screen when you turned it on.

The thing is, I think DSOrganize lacks graphics and user compatibility. I'm planning to shape it more like an actual OS (by that I mean user interface, file browser, internetbrowser?)

Hopefully this project can merge other projects (in the sense of making them fully compatible) with the help of the creators of very nice homebrew programs.

Knowing how grumpy I am first thing in the morning, such messages would simply incite me to throw my DS through the window! :)

If you're grumpy, Liter, this version is for you:

* Wake up in the morning *
* Turn on DS *
* You hear 'Good morning <your name>, you have to wake up now so you can drag your body down to breakfast so ou can go earn money to support your homerbew lifestyle!' *
* ' Today will be a hot day, fifth day in a heat wave!' *
* 'News headlines: <insert news>' Five people have died as an effect of the heat have.*
* 'Your mailbox has 3 new messages!' *
* 'Nothing planned for today.. except for going to work pouring cement <random tip=Hope it's not hot!>' *

:p

That would CERTAINLY cause the destruction of my DS. :)

#95740 - Nushio - Sun Jul 30, 2006 9:37 pm

Dude, I'll sign up for anything thats needed. I've been thinking this should be done (to a lesser extend, I'd settle with an alarm that wakes me up by a female voice, rather than a loud beep beep).

I'd really want to see this done. Need help with stuff? Let us know!

Maybe it should/could be adapted to DSOrganize.

#95771 - lambi1982 - Mon Jul 31, 2006 12:23 am

I cant remember, but is DSOrganize supposed to be getting RSS feed in the future???
and If that ever happens, couldn't a text-voice app be implemented to read specific things???

If not, can I turn some oft he systems off to emulate sleep mode?

And this is different from the DS Alarm how?

Sure, it will consume a lot more battery life, but if coded properly to save battery, I wouldnt mind having to put the DS to sleep next to the charger.

Dsorganise is not so bad but it lacks in graphical interface, and in touchscreen handling cause for me it looks somewhat laggy,atleast I've seen better.

I edited my first post, if you want to help this project, please read it! :)

A) Why not use the simple yet elegant DSOrganize approach?
B) How about HAL DS ;)

#96076 - Lick - Tue Aug 01, 2006 8:15 am

A) I want to make it look neat, so people can show off to friends. Seriously DSOrganize looks like Windows 3.1.
B) HAL DS? Do you have an explanation for me? :D

And what's so bad about the Windows 3.1 look?

Dave, I can't let them do that.

You'd be surprised at how many touch screen based kiosks ran Windows 3.1.

ran. Quit trolling! You know why Microsoft added nicer icons in XP and Vista? Because Looks ARE important and do MAKE the user experience more comfty.

Interface:

Why not some sort of a wheel, and you'd select the item you want by "spinning the wheel" (L and R buttons, and perhaps touchscreen "hotzones"), and then launch the one on top by either (double) tapping it or pressing A or Start.

I was also thinking on allowing this to be modular, and enable us to make plugins for it.

The interface I described reminds me of the little bar on Mac OSX, where you hover your mouse at, the selected icon "gets bigger", same would happen with the wheel, except you dont hover, you simply move them to be on top.

Ill try to do an ASCII drawing.
A
B x E
C D

"A" being the bigger Icon. Where the "x" is could be some sort of button that would allow configuration or something. I havent thought about it thoroughly.

#96283 - Lick - Wed Aug 02, 2006 8:50 am

Plugins are great! Not sure how to implement them though. I will look at moonshell (has plugisn right?)

You probably mean something like http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/mod/journal/journal.asp?jn=267694&reply_id=2549389.

It looks really cool, but I don't think it fits in an application, more like in a game. But I will think about doing something cooler than just plain icons ;).

Keep the ideas coming!

Yeah, thats the kind of system I meant.

And by plugins...

If this was open sourced, we could document it in such a way that he allows for more programs.

Adding a few lines in the menu to link to a function (i'm thinking java again, sorry) would be enough for a basic plugin feature.
