Does anyone think that it's possible to write a program for DS that uses the Skype protocol? This would probably be very useful, since you can now use Skype to call phones in the US and Canada for free for the rest of the year. Who knows? Maybe it could stay free forever.

Skype uses a mix of SIP/P2P protocols and since there's no public dev. library for it yet, you can't do it. On the other hand, there are tons of similar VoIP providers, a lot of them offering free calls to most of the world (e.g. Gizmo Project: http://www.gizmoproject.com/learnmore-allcallsfree.html - it's not fake, I can call myself, it works, despite the fact that URL looks like a spamsite).
All we need is a SIP client - all minor/major VoIP providers (except Skype) are based on SIP.

there's also the psphone.html file where you put it in the dslinux folder then send the dslinux folder to your gba cart and run it, after that you type something like retawq -psphone.html or something and you talk to people from your DS. look for the psphone in the serch section.

No, psphone is a website that you can type a message and a phone number into and the server dials the number and reads your message in a computer generated voice. The message can only be so long and it speaks fast unless you put more than one space between each word.

yes I know that, but someone found out that psphone can work with dslinux

Of course it does. All your doing is filling out a form, the rest is done by the server.

I remember HtheB being very eager about a SIP client for the DS =P ( I guess we all are )
I hope we'll see a DS to DS communicator of some sort soon.. maybe its already being forged, but held back untill a contest with a serious gift is approaching?

But the problem with Gizmo is that the other people you call have to be signed up for Gizmo. Are there anymore programs like Gizmo that have free calling without having other people register?

Well, there's voipbuster... sorta. They don't match skype in terms of quality and you're limited to landlines.

Voipbuster offers Free* calls to certain destinations
*Free, as long as you have credits in your account, oh and by the way, the credits expire every 120 days, so essentially you have to pay a fee every 4 months (I think minimum is 10EUR).
So pretty cheap, but not free -- TANSTAAFL

Gizmo is pretty much free. I just made a call to Germany, haven't paid anything.

It would be nice if someone ported SIP software to the DS, as WiFi SIP phones cost a lot of money. Is it possible with the DS's limited hardware, though?

there is allready a VOIP for the DS (metroid) so... its not that :)
#98761 - agentq - Thu Aug 17, 2006 11:45 am
It may not be started becuase nobody has tried, rather than it's too hard.
I think a VOIP client would be very feasable. Even easier would be for it to send the audio to the PC for compression/decompression, but I think compression on the DS is perfectly doable too (Metroid does it, as others have mentioned).
But there are more cool projects out there than people with the skills to do them.

There is an DS homebrew app called HelloDS which is a voip client. It doesn't work to well but you can download it on its page below.
