DS Misc > Why DS lite is so HOT?! :O

#98718 - Xtreme - Thu Aug 17, 2006 1:37 am

I made some tests and DS lite seems to be all the time hotter than old DS.

Nintendo DS: ~25.48?C / ~77.864?F
Nintendo DS lite: ~27.55?C / ~81.59?F

Look at my video clip:
Mirror 1: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=H6RKKTMP
Mirror 2: http://d.turboupload.com/d/885784/hot_dslite.avi.html

I started them equally at the same time and they had been on the same place over the night.

Can anyone explain this?

And yes, I have no other things to do than these crazy tests... just kidding. :)

well, the form factor is smaller ... check the temperatur of a laptop mb and a mb in a tower..you'll see more than a 2 degree difference.

I also found a strange bug :)
Moonshell shows a lot smaller value if I start it from my F2A cart...
On my SC SD: 31-33?C
F2A: 22-24?C

Does the SuperCard's DRAM generate any heat?

Hmmmm...

I've found my DS Lite's temp varies...

It's usually 28C on cool days, and goes up to nearly 36C on warmer days...

This is a DS Lite with SuperCard MiniSD...

Wait, wait.
Your using the built in temperature sensor?
Seriously?

I always thought that thing was kind of innacurate.

Maybe the temperature diffrence is due to the DSLites backlight, which is brighter, so i'd imagine warmer.

Why don't you trust it? Do you not trust ones on your PC? (if you have any that is)

Not sure, but the one in the DS is in the touch screen, so I'm not sure what it's detecting.

Room temperature, touch screen temperature or chip temperature?

As I said in my last post, I think it's the backlights.

defiantly not room temperature :p

Maybe its checking whether the screen is getting too hot for the chips around?

Mine almost always reads 21?C. I think it's supposed to be calibrated, and since Nintendo doesn't use it, they probably don't calibrate it.

but isn't it basically just a small digital thermometer? Thermometers don't need calibrating as far as I know..

Perhaps it -IS- room temperature, seeing as Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training sometimes tells you "It's getting warmer and warmer every day!". But that might be hardcoded into the calendar.. =/

Yes it is... it's winter down here, and he keeps telling me to play outside...

LOL. Thing is, probably it depends on what version of the game you have. US, Europe, UK, JP, SP. However, it would be handy if the NDS personal data included country information. Dangerous, but handy.

What's dangerous about telling a machine what country you live in? O_o
Also, GBATek says that although you can get a rough estimate of the temperature without calibration, it's recommended for accuracy.
