DS Misc > Virus by DarkFader? [old]

#101157 - hmbg - Sun Sep 03, 2006 2:08 pm

Is it true that DarkFader programmed a Virus for the DS?
There is an Article saying that:

http://www.ndswelt.com/2005/10/11/warnung-nintendo-ds-virus-zerstort-die-firmware/

It's a German Page, here is the translation:

Warning, Nintendo DS Virus destroys Firmware

Like before on the PSP, the first Virus exists for the DS now. The Program was programmed and published by a guy named DarkFader. The virus is camouflaged as Hentai Viewer (taihen.zip) or as Rom Loader (r0mloader.zip) and flashes parts of the firmware - for most user this means that the DS becomes unusable after the Attack. Remedy creates a Tool named FlashMe that must be installed already before - thus it is possible to put the firmware on again. Generally thus caution is required, if new Roms are installed - beginners should inform first in detail about Homebrew (privately programmed NDS software).

sorry in case of possible translation mistakes^^

Didn't you see the date of the article? Yes there have been a virus, and it may still be around but you can use dslazy to check for this virus.

That happened a loong time ago. (I don't think the virus is in circulation either.)

It's called CrashMe and comes in 2 forms:

r0mloader.zip
taihen.zip

Both are detected by Norton Antivirus aswell so you don't really have much to worry about. ;)

Somebody could modify it, so don't use "It's not named xxxx" as a way to check.

But you shouldn't have to worry about it. As I said, it's pretty much out of circulation. IIRC nobody has been bricked by it since it was released.

Some anti-virus software websites have these viruses listed, but whoever entered them into the database missed a few fields and left the default values, which don't apply to NDS.

Wow.. it's not even a VIRUS! It's a tojan!

Virus:
Quote:

A computer program that is designed to replicate itself by copying itself into the other programs stored in a computer. It may be benign or have a negative effect, such as causing a program to operate incorrectly or corrupting a computer's memory.

Trojan:
Quote:

3. a nonreplicating computer program planted illegally in another program to do damage locally when the software is activated.

Dear Ben,

Thanks for your enquiry to Sophos Support.

The file you submitted for analysis is indeed a newer release of the trojan
you suspected, from 1 September.

You can go to the description below:
