What would really be interesting is to use this *cheap* hardware and a patched firmware to run homebrew...

No ogg support. Less space than a Nomad. Lame.
The description states that it also works in the GBA and fits into the GBA slot. So it's probably some variant of the Play-Yan.

I'd settle with Video support, as it was removed from play-yan into MP3 Player.
Also, this thing, I doubt, will boot under NDS Mode. On DSi, it will most probably boot under 1 screen, like normal GBA games.

play yan boots under gba mode only. this'll be fun to see if you can, with a passme, access the sd card for homebrew. it's cheap and legit in the shops.

Maybe the existing Play-Yan firmware can be used. Or N just releases update to it.. or maybe not.. We'll see.
I must spit this out: Why should I buy it as I have a small minisd adapter with MoonShell? To get GBA support?-I don't think so.. it can not be good enough video quality with GBA.

there is no video support at all, unless you were talking about the play-yan
#101431 - tepples - Tue Sep 05, 2006 1:39 pm
But why would Nintendo remove the video support from the international version if 1. it's already working and 2. it would add another bullet point vs. the PSP? Did the MPEG-4 video decoder chip cost too much and they had to use a cheaper audio-only decoder instead?

Nintendo has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that an MP3 player for the platform holder's handhelds, sold under the name of Play Yan in Japan, is coming to Europe. |

..So I see reason why there wouldn't be also video playback.

So an MP3 player that only supports up to 2GB, with no OGG or video support. That kinda ruins the only real reason to make a DS version in the first place. Having its own headphone jack seems pointless too.

Really, it just looks like it uses the DS for power and as a display, everything else is done on the cart itself.

Theres still people with GBASP's out there.
Its actualy quite a good thing they put one on.
Not that Id ever by it, Moonshell gives me what I need, and if it didnt, then a stand alone mp3 player would probably still be cheaper.

wait, hardware accelerated mpeg-4 and possibility of using as a homebrew cart? Sounds good to me!
#101598 - mastertop101 - Wed Sep 06, 2006 8:26 pm
I heard outputed song by Play Yan's own jack is way better than gba/ds' jack.. Anyhow it's possible..
#102271 - youplaboum - Tue Sep 12, 2006 2:00 pm
Play-yan micro's output is way better than the gba micro one. It's like comparing AM and FM. Don't make me tell that the play-yan sound is the same quality of FM, it's as good as a standard mp3 player. I don't know about the DS output, I will try tonight.
I don't know anything about that new mp3 player (just like anyone) apart from this picture. We don't have a name, the simple guess we can make is that the logo is really similar to the play-yan micro.
The german text don't say anything about a GBA cartridge, I'm sure if this was the case it would be mentionned. And on the left sheet we can see half of a drawing of a DS cart. We can seriously guess that the mp3 player will be a DS cart with a SD slot. Hence the lack of support for video, if the related chip does not fit in it.
Still, I'm ready to make a donation to the guy who will make the gba homebrew on Play-yan micro possible.

the video playback on my play yan is great. for some reason the sound on the mp3 player through the ds's earphone jack is hideous. through the jack on the playyan cart it's really perfect.

That's because the GBA audio hardware isn't very powerful, just an 8- or 9-bit PWM DAC clocked at 65.5 or 32.8 kHz.
