Man I too have been hoping someone would take up this project. I was thinking more along the lines of Gaim since it's multi msngner platform and also is open source.

Google just uses Jabber.. and there are plenty of open source Jabber clients out there.. wouldn't mind seeing it myself.. :)

beup is open source maybe they could add google talk to that and make it a super messenger!

Testing a Google Talk client requires a Gmail account. Until Gmail comes out of its indefinite beta state, it is invite only. If Google Talk uses any uncommon extensions to the Jabber protocol, then you're going to have to get a lot of Gmail invites and give them to any developer who wants to work on this project.

Gmail invites are ridiculously easy to get. I think every user was given 100 a few months ago.

We could probably pull together 400 invites from the people who have posted in this topic alone...

I am not sure how popular Google Talk is, I prefer using Google's main service. Googling!

well, instead of testing directly at google talk, the developers could make it work with another jabber server. Plus I have another 99 invites...

I started a gtalk client for ds a few months ago, but I stoped because I couldn't port any tsl libs. If anyone knows of a tsl lib that works on ds, please let me know.

So I guess the plan is as follows:
  1. Get a Jabber client working
  2. Hand out invites to those who accomplished step 1
  3. Get Google Talk extensions to Jabber protocol working
  4. PROFIT!

Seriously though, the topic of a Gaim port keeps coming up a lot, lately.
I wonder if the whole new libgaim thing might be useful for that.

Wish i could make a port, but my skills are very, very limited, heh.

(Also, i could add another 100 invites!)

meh gaim tanks i prefer real msn and real google talk but seriosely we have tons of invites for any dev that needs them

#104332 - Lynx - Thu Sep 28, 2006 2:51 am

I don't think invites is going to be an issue EVER.. If you have 100, you can invite yourself 100 times.. I think right from the start, each new account receives 20.. and then after a month or something receives another 80 (for 100 total).. so I think you can see were that is going..
