amadeus of the DSLinux forums has implemented a rather nice GUI, though it's not completely functional yet. It's called PIXIL.

It'll be pretty sweet if ViewML works with it.
If dual-screen support is added, the resolution will be about the same as the devices it's designed for, which is nice. Though the fact that you'd only be able to touch half of the screen might be an issue.

wow - that looks really nice
#104935 - MaHe - Wed Oct 04, 2006 1:52 pm
Yup, it does. And judging from the screenshots, it will become a rather fine replacement for the dead DSOrganize. Time will tell. And amadeus is a talented coder.

I was just thinking the same thing.
Stupid question but does it multitask and how easy is it to write homebrew utilities for it? (compared to writing native DS homebrew)
#104941 - MaHe - Wed Oct 04, 2006 2:24 pm
DSLinux does multitask. And writing applications for it is really easier than using libnds (in short: it's the same as writing desktop applications, but just using a different compiler), but also a bit limited at some points (until PIXIL is available, you can only write Nano-X and terminal programs without using the bottom screen & stylus.

I hope that for applicatons, if he kept the GUI on the bottom screen and made the applications run on the top screen.
Keep up the good work amadeus:D

omg please let this be true.
the browser is included, right?

Well, this is really great news.
Amadeus just keeps producing wonder after wonder. The guy must be on some kind of programmer drug regime or somethng :-)
The programming options sound very interesting as well :-)

ah okay - but still, the potential for lots of new homebrew has just got a massive shot in the arm with this thing... :D

So DSLinux will have a GUI, in the foreseeable future?

Actually, that was me. Shouldn't use such a title, you are right.
ghaxaq: Just watch the thread. When he updates it, he'll tell.

Those are general changes in CVS, which aren't necessarily changes in the ROM.

To be fair, there is no indication at all of how well this is going to run on the DS, or specifically how much system resources will be available after the desktop itself is up and running. It is entirely possible that running this windowed environment alone will take up the remaining free cycles on the CPU. Sure there is more RAM now with the SuperCard builds, but the CPU itself is still much slower than what they are putting in even the cheapest Palms today.
As for dual screen support, NanoX includes an on-screen KB, but now you are talking about running yet another user-land program on top of the GUI itself, rather than the user interface being built into the kernel.
The project seems to me like a slippery slope that just takes more and more resources until you have a system that can run a windowed GUI, and not much else. That doesn't seem too useful to me, personally.
It would be great to see DSLinux develop into a full product, with GUI web browsers and the like, but I just don't see it ever happening the way people are expecting it to.

And I seem to remember Mac OS 1 running its breakthrough GUI on an 8 MHz CPU and 128 KB of RAM (that is, Sega Genesis class hardware).

That might be valid parallel if somebody was trying to write a completely custom OS for the DS on the bare metal, rather than trying to run an X environment ontop of a port of the 2.6 Linux kernel.
But as nobody is trying to do the former, the comparison makes no sense at all.

This won't work on a GBAMP right? :(

there's no word on whether or not this needs the ram extension yet. It may or may not work for GBAMP, time will tell

I'm assuming this is going to require the extra ram from supercard-like devices, correct?

Its very good progress, but if it dosnt run on the GBAMP and you have to login each time, I dont see many using it.
It wont be replaceing DSOrganiser any time soon.
It does look nice mind.

Um, I think all new devices have incorporated RAM. People are going to start focusing only on those devices sooner or later, the same way many programs today won't work without FAT.

Is amadeus at the beginning of his programing with Pixil?? Or has he already done some tests??
#105109 - Mr. Picklesworth - Fri Oct 06, 2006 1:02 am
Just starting.
This thread is a bit misleading and should really be edited.
Nothing has been ported yet, and that thread was not created to say "I've ported PIXIL!", but rather to say that anyone looking to help with porting PIXIL can update CVS and take a look :)

I just think people will get sick of login in every time thats all.
Linux people seem to be allergic to the idea of havinga system you just turn on :p
