DS Misc > using a ds screen for something else?

#111615 - spinal_cord - Fri Dec 08, 2006 12:28 pm

I have an unreliable dslite, it cuts out/freezes quite often, and playing games on it is almost impossible because of this. I was just wondering how easy/difficult it would be use one of the screens for something else, like a video display for a tv plug-in game of famiclone.

I'm not so good at google'ing for things, and mostly could only find pages for spare parts.

Probably easier to send it in for repair. Nintendo's pretty good when it comes to fixing things.

You have a one year warranty on it after all. Even if it broke because of something you did to it, it's only $50 to repair it.

Id need proof of purchase, i dont keep receipts for long after i buy something, plus its flashed, i dont like the idea of unflashing it when it keeps cutting out all of the time.

as for the receipt thing, most retail stores can search they're database and print up a new one. but as fir using the ds screen im sure its not impossible, but you'd have to find information on what kind of input it uses, i know that gamegear screens use rgb which is useless, but im pretty sure the ds would have something more modern. try emailing one of those popular portable console creators (like ben heckendorn) for more info.

Nintendo apparently could care less about the firmware.

bripro.com has info on the GBA screen, which should be similar. And don't all color LCD panels have RGB inputs?

Don't unflash it, just use FlashMe stealth.

Also, I sent mine back and they didn't ask for a receipt.

Here's why: In the back of every Nintendo game system's box, there is a hole for a scanner at the store to read its serial number. If your store scanned the serial number and sent it to Nintendo, then Nintendo already has your receipt. Also, Nintendo doesn't ask for a receipt in the first 12 months after a launch because all systems are under warranty by definition.

My store didn't send Nintendo the serial number.

In any case, he has a Lite, so his falls under the 12 months.

Really? I assumed Nintendo required the retail store to scan the serial number to sell the units.

I wouldn't worry aout the receipt. Just go to nintendo.com and punch in the serial number. Arrange a repair either over the phone or on the website and send it in. And nintendo doesnt care about the firmware. I sent mine in flashed and had no problems.

really? is this US only?

Both my NDS and NDSlite boxes have no apparent holes for anything like that...

Mine do. Along with almost any other gaming console I've bought, as far as I can remember. I'm in America, though.

Too late, I poked around inside it, to see if anything was shorting (I replaced this ds a long time ago so getting it fixed it wasn't that big a deal) anyway, I broke it some more. But I now have tow spare screens and a spare battery!

As for connecting either of them to something else, although I think I understand the theory, the practical seems a little beyond my skill.

LCDs generally only take digital signals, so would be incompatible with normal analog RGB like from a console. I'm less sure of this part, but I think that LCD screens of different resolutions also have different inputs, so you wouldn't even be able to easily use the DS screens for displaying video from other digital sources. I don't know how the digital RGB signals that an LCD takes compare to HDMI and things like that. They're definitely not directly compatible, but adapting them might not be as hard as analog-to-digital. Or it might be harder.
