DS Misc > Turning your DS into an MP3 player (for newcomers)

#122529 - tepples - Tue Mar 20, 2007 12:05 am

So you want to turn your DS into an MP3 player...

You can do this with any of the following programs:
  • LMP-ng, the "iPod-clone" music player software that the magazine told you about
  • MoonShell, a music player also capable of playing video, showing photos, and starting other programs
  • DSOrganize, a personal information manager that also plays music, shows photos, and starts other programs
These are Nintendo DS homebrew software, developed by a hobbyist and available on the Internet. You will need to purchase five things to get started with homebrew:
  1. A PC.
  2. An SD card writer, which may be built into the PC or may connect through USB.
  3. A microSD memory card. (Most microSD cards bundle an adapter to use the microSD in an SD card writer.)
  4. A Nintendo DS video game system.
  5. "Flash equipment", or an adapter to use microSD cards with the DS.

You can buy items 1 through 4 at traditional retail stores throughout the developed world. You will need to order item 5 online, which may require a debit card (which most banks include with each checking account) or a PayPal account.

The microSD to DS adapter is the size of a DS Game Card and will let you run Nintendo DS homebrew. There are several brands of adapter, and it's generally best to choose a brand that a lot of other people have so that they can help you with problems. Many of us recommend the R4DS or the rebadged R4DS known as M3 DS Simply. You can search Froogle for R4DS, and you can check the stores listed in Retailer Feedback to make sure that you're buying from a reputable store.

But playing music is not the only thing you can do with DS homebrew. There are numerous freeware games and applications for the DS. See also Nintendo DS homebrew on Wikipedia.

For #5, you can buy the Max Media Dock in some stores. As I understand, though, it's not great when it comes to homebrew compatibility. If you choose a slot-2 device, you can pick up Action Replay DS for practically nothing at many game stores (I got one at a grocery store!) which also functions as a NoPass.

Also, Moonshell is another great media player, and DSOrganize plays various music formats as well as streaming AAC.

Yeah, I am not a fan of iPods... Infact, I hate them.

Just use DSOrganize, it doesn't have an iPod interfact. DS Organize has extra stuff like address books and text readers and stuff.

DSOrganize is better than the LMP-ng

I still prefer Moonshell for playing MP3s myself. :) So Tepples, you might want to touch on their software options as well.

I got in trouble for that once before. Remember Gleamgate?

I also prefer Moonshell for my MP3s because it has alot of useful options. Would be nice if a player would a include a timer on it so I can see how long the song (or podcast) is.

You don't have to comment on their shortcomings, just mention everything that is able to play mp3s. Or not.. either way.. Are there any other mp3 players besides the following?

LMP-ng
Moonshell
DSOrganize
Infantile Paralysiser's standalone MP3player (and is it even still available?)

I've figured out a more NPOV way to mention the other two popular music players. But what (English) URL should I use to link to the MoonShell project?

It could be difficult to link to an English page for a Japanese program. What about the Moonshell thread here?

ok i am looking for something not high price(like 2 or 3 dollars) and pretty good quality. can anyone tell me haw little they did this project in?

#125029 - tepples - Wed Apr 11, 2007 12:06 am

I've seen a new DS for $130 and a new R4 card for under $35. For $3 you can get a pocket tape player at a thrift store.

i have ds and computer but everything else i need.

#125051 - HyperHacker - Wed Apr 11, 2007 12:51 am

You're not going to get the required equipment for under $3, but I think some slot-1 cards are as low as $20. AFAIK those wouldn't have built-in memory though, you'd need a MicroSD card. I'd look those up on Froogle but the link seems to have disappeared O_o but anyway they can be fairly cheap depending how much storage you want, I'd recomment at least 512MB for music.

If you have firmware versions 1-3 and a compatible wireless card, all you need is a GBA Media Player ($20) and a Compact Flash card (depends on the size and brand, avoid those cheapo ones though). Any Slot-2 card can be used for this but GBAMP is the cheapest. However, chances are you have neither of these.

$3 ?!?! lmao!

I'll sing you some songs for 3 dollars?

#125129 - DragonMinded - Wed Apr 11, 2007 5:03 pm

I wouldn't even sing a whole song for $3.

#125178 - jacob2040 - Wed Apr 11, 2007 10:56 pm

ok fine so $40 in all?

edit: what about these products?

sd card writer
[off-brand USB SD card writer]

microSD memory card
[Kingston 1 GB microSD memory card with SD adapter]

#125181 - dantheman - Wed Apr 11, 2007 11:09 pm

You still need the actual homebrew device to put the microSD card into, like the R4 or M3 Simply.

#125184 - jacob2040 - Wed Apr 11, 2007 11:52 pm

what do you think? should i but those item and can you link me to a good flash equipment.

#125193 - dantheman - Thu Apr 12, 2007 1:12 am

If you are planning to use a device that uses microSD cards, then yes, you should get that equipment. If you're going for cheap stuff, a slot-1 card would probably be good, in which case your main options are the R4, M3 Simply, and Supercard DS. Research those three devices to see if you prefer one over the others.

The EZ-Flash V is also another option as well. I'd stay away from the DS-X and anything with the word "Ninja" in it, as the former is overpriced at $125 and the latter isn't very well supported by homebrew. Granted, with DLDI, this theoretically shouldn't be an issue, but you're more likely to find people who can confirm problems ("yeah, it doesn't work on my XX device either") if you have a more common device like the ones I listed.

#125201 - jacob2040 - Thu Apr 12, 2007 2:04 am

hey im sorry about all the posts and trouble i have benn giving you but i like r4ds and especially this one
[a random retailer's R4 product description]
and if i have this stuff do i need anything but the sd card(and does it have to be a writer?)

#125213 - tepples - Thu Apr 12, 2007 3:10 am

The R4 comes with an off-brand USB microSD card writer in the box. So all you need to get started are a PC, a DS, an R4, and a microSD card. In fact, some retailers even offer a package with a bundled microSD card.

#125394 - tepples - Fri Apr 13, 2007 1:45 am

Yes, you can run a lot of other DS homebrew with the same R4 card.

thank you

#125582 - jacob2040 - Sat Apr 14, 2007 9:07 pm

also works on ds lite right?

#125583 - dantheman - Sat Apr 14, 2007 9:09 pm

Yes, all slot-1 devices will work on both DS Phats and DS Lites. There are some slot-2 devices that only fit in DS Lites without a special adapter, but slot-1 devices won't discriminate between the two.

#125611 - jacob2040 - Sun Apr 15, 2007 2:38 am

i wanted to make sure about that and do you thing that c/c++ is hard to learn?

#131295 - alephnull - Thu Jun 14, 2007 12:52 am

how much does the whole thing cost?and how do you download the songs? does it have to be from itunes, or will napster work?

It costs about $45 from the right places. The songs can't be in DRM'd formats. In other words, they should be MP3 or FLAC.

#131310 - tepples - Thu Jun 14, 2007 3:40 am

MP3, OGG, FLAC, S3M, XM, MOD, NSF, SPC all work for me.

If you have a DS/DSLite and a PC, for $40 you can have a decent mp3 player system and homebrew loader. The Datel Games n' Music is available in many US retail electronics stores (got mine at Best Buy) and comes with the GnM cart (slot-1), a 128MB microSD, and a microSD USB 2.0 reader/writer, as well as a disc with some homebrew games. The card can play .d3v videos and .mp3 audio without any other software, but the built-in player is terrible and not worth listening to. With the new DLDI for the GnM, you can use MoonShell, DSOrganize (but it must be named bootme.nds to work), and LMP (the Ipod clone) without any issues whatsoever. MoonShell also plays .dpg videos, but the GnM's hardware is a bit slow and videos may lag, but if you encode them at low bitrates it shouldn't be an issue.

Do any existing mp3 players for the ds allow you to listen to internet radio stations?

#150693 - dantheman - Sun Feb 10, 2008 9:00 pm

DSOrganize can launch *.pls and *.m3u playlist files which can contain Internet radio streams by using its file browser.
