DS Misc > libNDS GPL question

#128981 - kalus - Thu May 17, 2007 11:03 am

ok, as far as I can see, libNDS is protected under the GPL liscence. Does this mean that if I use libNDS to make a DS game/app, I have to release the source alongside it, or do I only have to release the source if I've modified the actual libNDS libraries? Thanx!

I don't think libnds is GPL. Check out the license.

That's the zlib license, a permissive license that is also used for libpng, Info-ZIP, and a lot of other software.

Heh.. it's funny you ask this.. I just went through this same conversation with WinterMute. Anyway, if you look at all the licenses with all the different libs in DevkitPro, you won't find anything that will require you to release your source, nor stop you from creating a "commercial" game cartridge from what you create.

That doesn't mean there won't be other things stopping you, just not the development toolchain.
