Being quite a big Stepmania fan, I've been randomly searching on Google for "Stepmania PSP" and "Stepmania DS" for the last year or so to see if something would come up, and I just discovered that there is an actual PSP port now D: DANG IT! I swore to myself I wouldn't get a PSP... grrrrrrr >_< *bangs head into wall*
But anyway, this is more of a "would it even be possible for a Stepmania DS" topic. I have no idea how CPU intensive mp3 and ogg audio decoding is (I do know mp3 is less than ogg though), but I really don't think moving 2D arrows could really tax the CPU much at all :P.

Your right! After you put together a demo, I'll check it out. Looking forward to your first release!

Seriously guys, how hard is it to simply TRY something yourself?

-_- Apparently you didn't realize the sarcasm in the title. Must we ALWAYS have to put a /sarcasm now-a-days? >_>
And like I said, the topic itself is more to find out if something like this would even physically be possible. I'm not really asking for one to be made. :P

More than possible.
Mp3 decoding can be done on ARM7, reading in the music from FAT.
That leaves ARM9 (the main CPU of the DS) free for whatever you want to do; should be more than capable of "making arrows move" and such. ;)

StepMania would be possible even on the GBA; check Luminesweeper for a proof of concept of music decompression during game play. But nobody makes a Wi-Fi dance pad, and the DS touch screen can't distinguish a <46> jump from a <28> jump. And DDR is patented.

for the wireless pad option, you could always go PAD->PC->wireless->DS,but why would you. you will be forced to use the controller buttons, I take it this is what SM-PSP does?, but again, why would you haha, the only reason I like something like dance dance is because it steps away from the conventional controller

If your going to lug a dance pad around with you, might as well lug a console and TV as well..
Now, using DSerial for the interface, and putting pressure/motion sensors on your shoes.. That would be worth taking a look at.. course.. knowing where to step might be a problem.

but but... I have no problem with using the buttons for controlling the game D: (like if you played DDR with a dualshock)
And DDR is patented... so? Stepmania still exists. :P

In The Groove no longer exists. It was a commercialization of StepMania. Roxor had to give the product to Konami to settle a patent lawsuit.
If you have no problems using buttons, then try AmplituDS.

that's because they were SELLING it. I've never heard of homebrew being sold. :P
#136593 - tepples - Fri Aug 03, 2007 2:07 am
A few more things to consider: - The vast majority of simfiles floating around for DWI and StepMania contain infringing copies of music.
- Programs that may not be sold also may not use GPL libraries such as libmad MP3 decoder.
- Whether an embodiment of an invention is sold or not has no bearing on whether or not it infringes a patent on the invention.
- Nobody wants to be the person who is made an example of.
And a technical reason: The StepMania engine had trouble running on a PlayStation 2, let alone a DS. It would be more work than just taking StepMania and making a new back end. It would have to be a rewrite, like DWI or FFR or Pydance.

If you wanna just use what the DS has.. isn't there already two or three DDR clones for the DS? Though, I don't get playing a dancing game.. and then dancing with your fingers.. but, w/e.

I do have a question about audio playback... if it barely taxes the cpu at all, then how come in Moonshell it'll randomly lock up between switching songs? This happened on my old Supercard CF and on my current M3 Perfect microSD.

@Lynx: Lay the DS on the floor, and DANCE !! XD
*Imagine it*
Muhahahah.... uhm... oh... ok
yeah..
That Stepmania Thing would be cool, IF it would:
- Support official Stepmania files
- offer a way to use gif's as a background (while dancing on "the floor")
- Just rock.
right ?
But anyway, DM is right (again ? Damn, where do you buy that stuff DM ? I need that too !), start progging stop complaining !

Search for DDR lite (requires to reboot the DS to play another song... unfortunately) which supports official SM songs I beleive, or the pretty shitty (done by me) Touch Touch Revolution with included songs.

If you find one of those, please give me the URL.

oh, it's on dl.qj? XD How did I miss that, that's always one of the first places I search!
...and it doesn't boot on my M3 Perfect microSD. >_< Now this is a proper time to say #^&$@!

DDRLite doesn't support DLDI apparently, I got it running on my GBAMP though, and I tried the first song, and it played the music but...there were no arrows, so it was quite pointless.
TTR worked, but the arrows didn't really line up with the music (when you set the speed, it didn't change the speed of the music, so it was also quite pointless)
EDIT:
nvm...got DDRLite to play, just has to be set to Standard mode

TTD wasn't bad but I wish you could add your own songs rather than having a few hardcoded ones.
