I was just wondering, has anyone tried swapping the casing on the opera memory expansion with the one that came with their DS Lites at all? I want to try it out as I've got a black DS Lite and I don't really want a clear game pak in there.
It looks like it's only secured by a middle screw but I'm not sure if there are any complications that might come up, has anyone ever taken apart a memory expansion cartridge?

I've seen people mod the cases so that the pak will fit in DS phats (a good idea since I don't have a Lite), but I've never heard of a case mod for color, it'd be possible but you'd have to either paint it or mold a new one out of black plastic.

Well, if the empty black case that came with the DS doesn't swap nicely, couldn't you just paint the inside of the memory pak black?

I managed to trim down the DS phat opera RAM into the empty case which came with the lite.
(I had to trim quite a bit, and some of the inside bits of the case aswell)

Yeah, I'm just wondering if it's possible to just directly transfer the internals from the lite expansion to the lite protector.
#137031 - TJ - Tue Aug 07, 2007 2:58 pm
I don't see why not, they are the same size and there is already a card inside of the slot cover (albeit a blank one). I assume some trimming would be involved, but you can buy new DS Lite slot covers for ~$3 on the Nintendo website, so it isn't too big of a deal if you destroy a couple in the process.

Sounds like a good idea then, when my ds browser arrives I'll report on my progress.

what would you need just the expansion pack for? I can't recall that much homebrew if any that actually uses it, unless you wrecked yours that is.

If you bought the DS phat opera and wanted a lite one without trimming things? Or more likely for the sake of slot-1 piracy... :(

How would that work? I thought slot-1 cartridges didn't need expansion packs. I only know of moonshell using it to buffer data when using a slot-1 cartridge.

Is there a version of Opera available for the Phat (original) DS? My friend got a Lite and the browser came with a pack that only fit the Lite, and I'm wondering if stores sell the one for the original DS (I don't want to order it online). I want the browser, and the RAM for MoonShell, DS Linux, etc as well.

Opera is a commercial slot-1 (like any random DS game) and it comes with the memory expansion (and is required). If one were to pirate the slot-1 they'd still need the slot-2 half. There are alternatives, but I'm not going to talk about them because discussing pirates is agaisn't the rules of the forums.

What tepples means by 'Which country?' is that there is a choice of a phat version of the browser in the European release. I believe the US release doesn't have a phat version.

The US release does have a Phat version, but it's only available online, which calcprogrammer1 said he wishes to avoid. Retail stores in the US most likely only sell the Lite-sized version.
#137120 - calcprogrammer1 - Wed Aug 08, 2007 2:19 am
Which makes me hate retail stores in the US >.<
Seriously, my DS is from '04, that's not terribly long ago as to be "Unsupported"...but indeed it is. And I don't want to buy a Lite (almost exact same hardware, with exact same specs except brighter screens and a small form factor) just to use it.
They should have released the Opera pack just for Phat, seeing that Phat (regular GBA cart sized) packs work in Lite DS, but not the other way around, or they could have given a Lite sized circuit board and a Lite and Phat case that you could choose from.
Or, I guess I could always use this as an excuse to get a Slot-2 homebrew card with extra RAM :P but I doubt that'd happen.

I just got the browser through the post so I'll try the case swap later.

Hate to bump an old thread but with about 40 minutes labour and a dremel I just stuffed my EZ 3 in 1 into the stock DS lite slot 2 pack.
Fits in there perfect and doesn't have the slight bump on the one side that the standard EZ cart did.
Only thing is, I had to sacrifice the rumble pack motor which is fine since I hate things that rumble and have never used it. So technically I now have a "2 in 1". ;)
#139427 - HyperHacker - Thu Sep 06, 2007 2:58 am
Hehe, you could add an LED in its place. Then whenever the LED comes on, shake the DS. :P (Or use it for debugging, whatever suits you.)

Shaking the DS sounds like the most useful option there.
This EZ 3 in 1 thing, do I buy it to replace by Opera ram? Is the RAM detected like the Opera ram or is it more like supercard?
#139527 - Dood77 - Fri Sep 07, 2007 4:18 am
Well I wouldn't call it more like supercard, but since the hardware is different, the memory addresses are different. So it wouldn't work as Opera RAM unless you could change some memory values whilst running your Opera cart... (Nitrohax)

Original DS Phat obtained on day of release + flashme v7
Supercard: miniSD, Kingston 1GB, Kingston 2GB
Ralink chipset PCI NIC

If Chishm's Opera_RAM program supports it, you could try using that to exchange the official RAM pack with the 3in1 (must be original slot-1 cartridge).
http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=14039
I'm guessing however that it only works on the Supercard and M3.

emuflux inspired me to make my own ez3in1 casemod and it turned out great. Dremels are your best friends!
btw, mine has rumble :P heheh... now to find a reason to use it...
