There was also one for the GBA SP, if this one woks in the same way, it sends a video signal from the doodad which is then decoded to the screen, the picture quality will be no where near the pixel perfectness of an emulator.

There is a simple nes to famicom convert around, ebay should find you one.

Legally, these devices can't show up until 20 years after the system comes out. That's why you only see Famicom (NES) and not Super Famicom (SNES) clones.
