#156498 - 11X_daemon_X11 - Sat May 10, 2008 8:32 pm
Alright, I just downloaded DSlinux, patched it with gmtf.dldi (version 1), running it on a 1gig sd card with no expansion pak (as I can't afford one atm). Ok, I run the DSlinux.nds (not the dslinuxm.nds as I didn't patch it), and as soon as everything loads, I instantly get this error :(

Well the thing is I know whe n Igot there they're going to expect me to be a know it all on the Linux chain when I'm using it to learn that kind of stuff (as I've nveer used it before) so I was hoping someone here has had this experience before. I read that its a problem with writing and I got it to work for 1 second but then it stopped working again after I tried to run Links. :(

no, they're not. you really shouldn't ask here, it won't help you at all. go to the forums there.

I figured it out by myself :p It seems it didn't write the passwd file, which seems to be a common problem on GnM cards... and every time I tried to register on their site, it wouldn't let me so... no help from their either =\

First off, like other people have said, please use the DSLinux forums to report problems. Second, I've had someone check that the GnM works with DSLinux (use DLDI version 1) so I know it works.

What is the actual error message? You could always try #dslinux on irc.blitzed.org for help with registration if you can't get on the DSLinux forums.

hey, sonny_jim. thanks. you know, i think he's actually using patch 2. or at least should be.

I fixed it like I said and looked on their forum and they even said that the newest build of linux shouldn' be used with GnM as it has writing errors. But like I said I figured it out :) Also, I made sure I was using version 1 because version 1 is the only one that works with the 1gig sandisk card.

just curious, you replaced the contents of the passwrd file? like so many posts on that site say? lol... i think that was a bad idea.
edit: lol, sonny_jim. maybe they should delete it.

/me sighs
===== Mod's, please lock this thread =======
Basically, the problem is this:
On boot, DSLinux looks to see if a /etc/passwd file exists and if it doesn't, it generates one. The reason why the GnM fails is because for some reason with later versions of DSLinux it only works read only. This means that the /etc/passwd file doesn't get generated which a lot of Linux programs rely on, which causes all the errors.
What people have been doing with the GnM is supplying their own /etc/passwd file to skip the part where it tries to generate one. This can hardly be called a fix as the entire root filesystem will be readonly and various Linux applications (like gpm for example) need to be able to write PID files and the like.
As I've said over on the DSLinux forums, I am no longer interested in making DSLinux work on Slot-1 devices as they cannot provide extra RAM which DSLinux so sorely needs.
See here for a list of known working Slot-2 RAM packs.

Could someone PLEASE explain the problem to me?!?! DLDI reads/write FINE with the Datel Games N Music card!!!
I just tried it.. Grabbed a new 2GB MicroSD card.. Formated it.. copied JUST dslinux.nds and the linux folder onto the card. DLDI patched it with VERSION 1 of the DLDI for the Games N Music. Renamed it to bootme.nds. Insert it into my Games N Music, popped that into my DS-L and turned it on. It boot up fine and gave me the # prompt.
Again, I cd /media and created a directory fine. went into that directory and did 'vi test.txt' and was able to create/type/write the file fine.
What seems to be the problem with the GnM already!?!?

Nothing, it's fine. It's mostly PEBKAC I think. None of the DSLinux dev's have one so noone can fix it.
As I said before, can a mod please lock this junk thread? Or move it to OT?
