i think this would be a pretty good homebrew app if you were say hosting a party you could play audio on your DS and then if you press a button you can use it as a microphone then just hook it up to some speakers
someone should really make a microphone demo and the audio player demo can be worked on once darkains filesystem is ready
#43993 - Darkain - Sat May 28, 2005 11:31 pm
i like how you asume im creating a filesystem. :)
yes, i EVALUATED filesystems, but i never intended to create one. and from my evaluation, it looks like i will probably be using FAT (or a close derivitive thereof) in the near future.
and isntead of waiting on others to do things, why not do it yourself now?
(and if you want a DJ app, buy elecrtoplankten)

what filesystem do other gba apps use? (such as the gba movie player)
i thought you needed to make a new one for some reason
one reason i cant do it myself is that i dont have a passme wireless card or gba cart :( besides i only know vb you guys code in C right?
#43996 - Darkain - Sun May 29, 2005 12:11 am
i personallly use a hybrid between C/C++/ASM.
you can write one too... just write it for the GBA first and use an emulator.

Adapters (GBA Movie Player, SuperCard, Play-Yan) that access "standard" memory cards (CF, CF, SD) will typically use Microsoft FAT16.

ELectroplankton is not much of a DJ app. Daigasso! Band Brothers is more what you'd want.

Or a better use for at a party would be as a remote control for Winamp.... (much safer than letting drunk people mess with the expensive PC that might be playing the music!)
Maybe show a jukebox-style view - album art/track list on the top screen, playlist and UI on the bottom? - could be neat.
Or for those with modded Xboxes, it could make a nice XBMC remote, so you can use the Xbox for mp3 playback without a TV?
Of course, we need the wireless to be figured out first... which doesn't seem likely to happen until an online game is released....

I am also interested in making a DJ app/game for the DS. One of the features that would be awesome would be to actually scratch on the touch screen to scratch a record. Elekoplankton has real-time sound filters (where you record a sample and distort it) so I'm sure it is possible on the DS. There are a bunch of things that would need to be coded, heres my list:
- An MP3 player for the DS (which may require some sort of file-system)
- Pitch control (to slow down or speed up the MP3)
- Real-time sound filtering (to simulate scratching, fx boards, etc.)
This will probably be the first full featured app I will create for the DS, but I have a lot of learning to do before I can get to that point. All my work will be open-source so maybe we can work together to get this up and running.

DarkainMX, stop waisting time posting here and write your file system already! ;)

what I think would be cool if you could switch the microphone to a line-in connector and write something similar to a Korg Kaos Pad. :D
that would be really cool

How can you connect a microphone, or line in cable? Is there an adapter that can be bought somewhere or could one be hacked together bits of random electronics that we have liyng around the room so that a cable could be plugged in?
#51475 - tepples - Sat Aug 20, 2005 2:27 am
First off, you'd need an attenuator to bring line level signals down to microphone level. Then you'd need to make an adapter to put microphone signals on the square "mystery port" next to the headphone jack.

That's not such a big mistery... Big Ben Interactive is selling a DS Headset with included microphone. It plugs into the standard jack + square mic port.
I have seen this on sale at Carrefour here in Spain, so it's more than possible you can find it on any store. Here you are a link (It was hard to find).

And a VERY high-res photo:

Price is just like 10?... what is like... uuhh... about 8 or 9USD
Just rip off that cable and you'll have sound Input/Output directly to your DS.
Greets.

actually 10 euro is like 12 USD... the us dollar has been dropping in value
#51480 - Dannon - Sat Aug 20, 2005 4:02 am
I live in the UK so it would cost me just shy of ?7.
Does anyone know how you would communicate with the port? Would it just overide the mic and be used in the same way?

Certainly... It is late here and I have been awaken for too many hours so I have almost no idea of what I am typing... lol

Thanks for the link. Modding that device may come in handy. It could be used for live MCing (aka rapping) over the live mix. Maybe with a little work you can mod the headset to send the left signal to the headphones and the right to aux output. That way you could cue up on the DS but ouput to your PC, stereo, DAT recorder, whatever. It obviously wouldn't be pro sound equipment, but it may be a really cool bonus to an already solid portable.

The headset jack next to the headphone jack on the front of the DS is just a normal line-in connection.
If you connect it to either a good microphone, or a line-in (which is then connected to an MP3 player, stereo, etc) the DS turns off the built-in mic and uses whatever is connected.
Using this concept, I built both a headset for the DS (usless since an offical one will eventually come, but I was bored) and more importantly, an adaptor to connect a standard 3.5 mm jack to the DS headset port.
I used it to feed Electroplankton audio.
#51501 - dXtr - Sat Aug 20, 2005 7:40 pm
nice, so it isn't to hard to get line-in on the ds. :)
never knew that the ds had that connector ;D
#51504 - Dannon - Sat Aug 20, 2005 7:57 pm
I'll try and build one, what did you use for the adapter?
#51517 - TJ - Sun Aug 21, 2005 12:03 am
Ah, now that is a bit of a story.
I started with the audio cable from a CD-ROM drive (2 conductor, two male ends). I cut it in half lengthwise, so that I had two plugs each with 2 conductors.
I then slowly filed the plastic down until: A. the bottom side of each conductor was exposed through the plastic shell, and B. the plug actually fit into the DS's headset jack.
It is a bit hard to describe, my one digital camera can't focus on it because it is too small, but I'll try to get a picture with another one and see how it comes out.

Did you manage to get better pictures? A better guide on how to build such a microphone would be nice too :-)
