can someone tell me if you require an active internet connection to play online, or just a wifi router?
#59127 - JaJa - Sat Oct 29, 2005 10:08 am
Erm...okay...online play.
Think about that.
What does it tell you?
You need an internet connection via a router or wifi card so the DS can play over the internet.
Think before you type.

wifi router => internet
online => internet connection
offline => no internet (connection)
online play => playing ONLINE over the internet
this should make it clear, it was a very dumb question

Another related question: Does it support ad-hoc play, either single-card or multi-card? How limited is single-card ad-hoc play compared to multi-card ad-hoc play (is it limited to one character and four tracks like the GBA version, even with the increased RAM of the DS)? And how limited is multi-card ad-hoc play compared to Internet play? And how fast must the Internet connection be for Internet play to work?

Single card multiplayer will allow players to choose from eight tracks in the game's standard racing mode, and three levels for both the Balloon Battle and Shine Runner modes. DS Download Play also restricts racing to the 100cc class.
In terms of multiple cartridge multiplayer, Nintendo has gone all out. The mode will not restrict players character selection, all the game's 32 levels will be available, and different engine choices will be available. The game will also track each individual player's win/loss record and allow them to trade "ghost data" so others can race against their best lap times. |

Which leaves one thing: Is there vs. CPU in balloon battle?

A long time ago, a "month" or longer, it was said NO vs in battle online. Only trackracing.
Howerer in an recent interview it sounded like battle was going online though.
So big mystery at the moment, I'd say...

no its not a dumb question its advertised as "Nintendos *FREE* online service"... which to me sounds like nintendo would act like an ISP for the NDS's... so i just wanted to be clear.

It is a dumb question because it seemed like you asked whether you needed an internet connection to play online.
A wifi router doesn't automagically give you an internet connection.
Nintendo's wifi connection uses thier wifi hotspots in mac donalds restaurants across America.
So you don't need a connection personally, but you need access to an internet connection.

the free part relates to subscription fees, as atm you have to pay to access XBox Live and any other networks (on Sony Online Network, each publisher sets the subscription fees, as do publishers for PC MMORPGs)

has there ever been a vs. CPU in balloon battle in any other mario kart? nup, which leads me to believe that there won't b this time around (there might be something similar as one of the challenges in the single player mode tho)
i don't see why they couldn't do balloon battle online...tracks only allow up to 4 players online, and balloon battles only allow up to 4 players as well. 2 weeks to go tho, so we'll see then eh?

That's the n00b definition of free, free on the internet means that you don't have to pay for a subscription, when they say free internet acces, then it would be different.

This is from the producer:

In the past, battle mode has been multiplayer only, but in Mario Kart DS we will have a battle mode that single players will be able to enjoy. |
That sounds like bots to me, and Nintendo's official page says this:
Nintendo wrote: |
VS and Battle are available in Multiplayer Mode for up to eight players, and all modes are available for single players. |

I seriously hope they do put this online. I see myself playing this mode more than the standard racing, but I keep getting conflicting info on whether this mode is online or not. But, as you said, not much longer to wait...
