DS Misc > Scientology Use

#62654 - Dannon - Sat Dec 03, 2005 11:21 pm

I've been thinking and I think the DS could be used as an e-meter, this could help in the progress of the church of Scientology and would surely reach out to a wider range of impressionable individuals, any thoughts?

I think the homebrew community's resources could be better utilized doing something marginally more constructive.

I won't give examples, because some may find the intended humour I would be using as offensive to the concept of this "e-meter".

I think the link you gave has a quote that works to make my point:
Quote:
"By itself, this meter does nothing."

Maybe we should also make a digitized Baha'i Ruhi Course or a Christian Confession Stand app... or maybe even a Jewish Circumcision simulation game (a la Trauma Center).

Yes, perhaps a game where you get to nail Jesus to the cross with the touch screen. Maybe even touch screen spear control, so you can cut him up once he is up there.

And of course, the microphone will be used with voice recognition, so the game can accept your penance for killing the Son of Man.

Actualy, a spoof religious game could be really funny :D

Allthough Scientology is more a cult really....

#62667 - Dwedit - Sun Dec 04, 2005 5:25 am

Maybe use motion detection technology for a more accurate E meter.
Or have it poll an E reader plugged in.

Yeah. That's joking alright.

Alright I think I'm pretty much done writing my library to access the e-meter hardware in the ds, I think I've worked out any bug I can find. Here's a test app to show my progress.

You know the CoS has pretty much sued anybody and everybody they've ever had a problem with right? They own patents on their emeters, and use copyright to bring suit to people who want to expose who they really are. They've done this to bankrupt individuals, and corporations. While INAL, you can read more about it at Operation Clambake, and I'd strongly suggest taking your facination underground.

Watch the "Trapped in the Closet" episode of South Park, S9E12. Matt and Trey do a wonderful job of explaning what Scientology is. But don't take it TOO seriously. (Anyone who takes Matt or Trey seriously needs help). I just like the way they explain it. You can also find out about Mormons, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, and more from other episodes (although if memory serves, Mormonism and Scientology are the only ones they explain to a greater degree).

Edit (addition):
I just tried De-meterS. That is FUNNY! I laughed out loud. Try it, all who can. The .nds works on a ds-ified GBAMP.

#62926 - Dannon - Tue Dec 06, 2005 11:30 pm

I've seen all of the South Parks of which you speak, they definately do a good job of explaining things, with some amusing crude humour thrown right in. It's like the Michael Moore documentaries, as long as you realise that it has Michael Moore's 'spin' on things as well then your set.

Unlike copyrights (nowadays) and trademarks, patents expire.

Copyright covers ideas, not expressions, although you're right about nuisance suits.

I think a good game would be SimScientology, where you are L. Ron Hubbard and you build your empire by writing scifi stories and recruiting hapless masses to give you money so you can buy little boys to stock your yacht with. Or something.

#62978 - Darkflame - Wed Dec 07, 2005 1:25 pm

How about a game:

Scientology VERSE Raelians : Clash of the Cults ?

#63344 - Darkflame - Mon Dec 12, 2005 4:03 am

Improvements for this silly app:

1) Neater background...currently it obscures the words on the bottom..very hard too see what the machine is saying.

2) Better pics.

3) Exit function. (essiental in all ds app's, imo)

Basicaly presentation, but it shouldnt be too much effort to fix it up :)

How did they manage to get a patent on that? Or rather, how can they expect to sue anyone over it? From what I've heard, it's just an electric resistance meter, with a few dials to tune it and make it look like it's more complicated than it is.

Nice De-meterS app, just tried it out on my GBAMP :D

I love my background, it's great if you know what the background actually is :-), natrium, lynx, or darkfader could probably figure it out pretty fast. I can't change the other pics either because those are pics that reflect your exact emotional state based off your exact number of theatons(very different then ohms) :-P

#63368 - Darkflame - Mon Dec 12, 2005 2:33 pm

just make the background lighter in the area under the text :p
Have a 50% transparent white box over that area or something.

You don't need to remove the background, just make it easier to read :p

It looks like a very amateur Demeter at the moment, when we all know they are high precision instruments.

Maybe I'm just being me, but it seems like a few people are taking this thing too seriously. Either I'm mistaken in thinking it's a joke, or other people can't see it's a joke, or I can't tell other people think it's a joke too.

I think you're taking their sarcasm too seriously :)

I think that the tone of a thread is essentially unknowable to the reader. Descartes' take on dualism has nothing to do with this, but I mention it for the sake of saying a name that sounds French.

Whereas Ryle or Armstrong, the former being a logical behaviorist and the latter a reductive materialist, are more or less, the polar view to dualism. They, in fact, don't believe in the soul or the "immaterial mind". And this, of course, also has absolutely nothing (or, perhaps, if taken conceptually abstract, to a lesser degree, infinitesimal) to do with this topic.

I will, however, say the names Spinoza and Leibniz, who both were very influential rationalists. This has more to do with the subject that has nothing to with this thread's subject, in fact, than this thread's subject.

And now for something completely different...

I wish I could say that I understood half of that, but I'm afraid that I'd be lying. I'll just take it at "the tone of a thread is essentially unknowable to the reader", and then smile and nod.
