buy an m3 or gbamp

dont expect anything spectacular though its pretty perfect for watching animation(an episode of family guy is around 90MB at full quality) but isnt so good at live action videos

GBAMP is great for everything but movies :D
IMO, at least.
It only use's GBA hardware, and is thus quite limited.

Are you using the 'fast' setting? It seems like it gives the video more FPS when you do that.

You may as well get the Play-Yan (Micro):
-Great quality movies.
-Great quality songs.
-Original Ninty product.
Though I have to wonder, since it goes through the GBA slot (and most-likely boots up in GBA mode), how good can the music quality be? Certainly can't be as good as Moonshell running Mp3s, right?

its only early days with the m3 though its video player gets better and better. like i said animation is perfect but live action isnt so great quality but still watchable. the comming firmware is apparently gonna give some nice boosts too.

Audio is fine. Since you should be able to run Moonshell on an M3 as well, you'll definately be able to get perfectly good sounding audio. The Play-Yan, from what I've heard, has pretty poor audio quality, though a firmware update may have changed that.
There is no USB port, you need to get a CF and/or SD card reader to access the cards. No one has mentioned the fact that you need to buy a card in the thread yet, so I'll toss that out too. They range greatly in price depending on capacity, I think I got a 512 megabyte CF card for $40CDN.

And also you have to convert the video into specific type in order to play in M3. The process usually takes as long as the movie length, an other word if you have 2 hrs video, it takes 2 hrs to convert.

That also depends on how fast your computer is. If you're running a PII-500MHz, it's gonna take a lot longer. If you have a 4 GHz CPU with 2 GB of dual-channel DDR, then chances are it'll probably take less time.
(But don't take my word for it until I've tried the M3 conversion software first!)

Nothing beats moonshell/mps's for quality, imo

...which is why I think watching films on GBA/DS or PSP will forever only be a gimick. (even if it was just size conversion needed).

That's why i don't watch movie on my DS either. Just let's the game consoles do what they suppose to do. That's playing games.

In reply to a question about the M3s poor video quality compared to what it *should* be able to do :
-------------
Hi ,
Our present frame rate is 10fps, and we could improve it with 24fps.
But we don?t want to improve it , the reason is that many people can not accept so large capacity possibly and the conversion speed will be slower
I think the present movie quality is better.
Mepg codec is hardware code , our codec is software codec .
The cost of hardware codec is too expensive ,so we can't adopt in our M3 products .
We will develop another product & adapt the Mpeg4 hardware codec.
-----------------
MPEG is hardware? Dunno what he's on about, seeing as I was refering to the example of a software based MPEG1 decoder I got working on the M3 - http://www.sentientai.net/files/DS/
GBM movies are pretty horrible, in my opinion. And the audio is worse than anything I've heard. What we need is some one with the skills needed to finish that MPEG1 project ~_~
#63485 - El Hobito - Tue Dec 13, 2005 4:19 pm
that a bit poor of them to limit it on purpose they should give the option of setting the frame rate. i love watching family guy on my m3 theres no real loss of quality. gbms would be much nicer if they had a slightly higher frame rate.
#63487 - Durandle - Tue Dec 13, 2005 4:44 pm
Some animated series look ok, but anything that uses a good frame rate in the actual animation looks just as bad a normal TV. Also, GBM tends to lose sync with its audio which is just horrible.
