Good day to you, I hope.
Today, I completely screwed up my compact flash card.
It may not seem like much, I think I can get a new one, but meanwhile, Im stuck with transfering homebrew via WMB (and i still dont know how) (I just flashed my NDS, so it is possible).
Anyways, It seems that Windows wont let me format my flash card, fdisk wont touch it, and several norton utilities wont help me either.
What I need is a simple app that will let me delete certain files and if possible, format the card.
According to one of the many utilities I used, I screwed up the track 0. I can still see the files there, but I cant touch them. Can't add new, can't delete old.
So, is my compact flash gone? Or is there any way to restore it (recover track 0) or something? Magnets, screwdrivers, loading apps via Dloadplay?
If anyone can help me, I'll really appreciate it.

my gf's SD card kinda has a similar problem...in Windows it won't format or write to it at all, even if you flick the read/write switch. but for some reason her PPC can write to it just fine, so i suggest popping it into a PPC if you have one available and see what you can do there

Would the Moonshell format utility help at all?

Get HexWorkshop, then go to "Disk -> Open Drive", select your CF as a "Physical Disk". Now you'll see the first sector of your CF. Overwrite it with zeros. Now you could try formatting it with Windows again.

Thanks! Ill definitely try this one!
CubeGuy: Im not sure, but i'll try if the hex editor doesnt work.
Sebbo: I do have an old PPC, I'll try that one third.
Thanks everyone! Ill try everything suggested!
Edit: Well, I tried the editor. It wont let me rewrite, so I lost all faith in the card, and Ill buy a new one first chance I get.
The error it gives me is: Unable to write sector 0. The device might not be ready, locked, contain bad sectors, or require user permisions...
Ah well.. I'll still try the other 2 methods, but I dont think either will work...

I nuked a SD card once, in a format that couldn't be written by anything...no windows formatting tools, linux formatting tools, my PPC, and not even trying to directly writing to the device (in either windows or linux) would work.
I'm still not completely sure on how I managed to do it, but it can happen.

Stupid but worth a try use the HexWorkshop method by natrium42 above make an image to your harddrive of the card open image blank to all 0's and write it back... although I'm thinking you'll get the same outcome
You can also run error checking on the drive in windows
And I think this program might be of use to you

Can you read other cards with the reader?

You might also want to try another CF device, like a digital camera, etc if you have one around. I've used my camera to "recover" my CF a few times when Windows wouldn't recognize it.. though, I was to lazy to try the hex edit method, which might point to the card being dead.

I ended up buying a new card. Thanks for everyone's help
I tried F-Secure image recovery, with no result.
I tried my PPC, with no result either.
HexWorkshop won't let me touch it.
Moonshell wont help me either.
I tried all Windoze and Norton utilities with no help.
The reader still works, with the new card, I placed a bunch of MP3s and the new Lost episode (2x11), and with Moonshell, everything is working fine.
Ill give it a try with Media Recover's software. And I'll post the results.
Thanks for the feedback everyone!
And Josath: I'd be interesting to know how to destroy the track 0, as to know how to not destroy it :P
Edit: Tried the Media Recover with no luck :(

last thing (kind of has a snowballs chance in hell of working though) you could try hooking it up as an xbox memory card to an xbox and see if that will format it
Looking round the net and some seem to say this is a windows/dos issue one guy said to try formatting it with fat32 (worth a shot)

Ill try the Xbox thing when I get the chance. I dont have an xbox, but a friend does.
Second, I dont think formatting is possible, I tried with fat and fat32 with no luck, I'll try running Knoppix or Ubuntu live and attempt to format it from there later.
Im back to listening MP3s and reading my ebooks on my NDS thanks to my friend's compact flash card.
Thanks everybody for the suggestions provided!

There is an app called DSorganizer. Its by Dragonminded and it has an Filebrowser which too can delete files (but no Folders). This app helped me
several times :).
Greets:
Pas
PS: This app can copie and past data too, but not cut out them now.

Try open cmd.
Format (e.g.) f:
Of that doesn't work you, try reinstalling your card reader.
If that doesn't work I don't know...

Nothing worked, I tried Rain which has a way to format the card (or at least i think it was supposed to format the card :P) and it didnt work.
I also tried writing the savefile on the card, and it didnt save. Lastly, I tried deleting a savefile, and it didnt work either.
Track 0 is busted, with no way to fix it :(

You can't format your CF with Rain because the "Fromat" Option is for formating you DS Cards.

ENTERPRISE Recovery software
http://www.mediarecover.com/software.html
It is not freeware, but maybe there is a trial version of it? Or just grab it somewhere and buy it after testing/recovery (if you like it). ;)

I did try that one with no luck :/
I still have the old CF, but I bought 2 more (128 and 64, I'm afraid of buying/bricking bigger models)

All my flash media for my camera are Transcend. They are HQ. And pretty cheap too.
They have lifetime warranty.
