The problem was supposedly wrong touchscreen reading code, and it
should be fixed in the latest libnds. I still seem to get it wrong though. :(
Here's a thread about it:

I don't know if Natrium42's solution is wrong, if it's not included correctly
or if I'm not using it correctly. We'll have to wait and see...

WOW, this is INCREDIBLE!!!
what a brilliant application, at this moment, the DS is becoming a worthy opponent of my high-end MP3 player.
CF is very cheap
DS battery is great
navigation is great
Sound quality is close to great
Cool that u can adjust the volume, because the DS hardware volume change slide sucks.
I am so happy :)
sorry for the useless reaction....

VBR at what average bit rate? And "full stereo" vs. "joint stereo" shouldn't have much difference in the CPU load of decoding, as "joint stereo" just means to switch to sum-difference representation of the two channels for audio segments where the sum is much louder than the difference. |
I can't recall what VBR level it was, but it was fairly high. I tried one that I think was somewhat lower, then one I know for a fact was a pretty high average bitrate.
Heh, and I know what Joint Stereo means.
I have to say too, loading up a bunch of episodes of 8-Bit Theatre and reading them on my breaks at work is pretty sweet as well. Converting them to PNGs because JPGs seem to have a slight bug at the moment where you have to restart after loading one before it'll load another...might be fixed now though, haven't tried the most current version.

I just thought I might help out with a few tips:
Because of the way GBAMP_CF searches for files, the directory listings will be in the order that you put the files onto the card. So if you have any particular play order for your MP3s, put them on the card in that order (even though it doesn't automatically advance yet).
The time is displayed in MoonShell, but it is hidden. It is about a 1/4 of the way from the bottom, hidden behind all the other windows. Just drag those windows out of the way (off screen if you don't need them) and you can see it.
You can change the background picture. Edit files/.shell/desktop.bmp then run WriteFile.bat . Copy the new _BOOT_MP.NDS onto your card.

yeah jpeg viewer seems to be broken somehow:
After selecting a jpeg it comes up normaly but then after I want to go back to my MP3s(for example) and start up one the programm crashes.
The MP3 won't open for some time and then it even freezes.

Just tried to recalibrate. Same problem with all homebrews. Let's try to narrow this down. I know theer was someone else on the board who was having the same problem. Was there any hardware revision for the DS?
Sausage Boy : Would you happen to have the Electric Blue DS by any chance? Seems like we share the same problem.

GOT IT to run on the Supercard!!!!
Extract the files to your drive (desktop..whatever) .
first you need to put your MP3's that you want to listen to in the "files_gbfs" folder; theres a TEST.MP3 in that folder also ready so delete that and put all yours in there. in the end this will make a massive file with all your MP3's in it.
Run the "WriteFiles_gbfs.bat" from a command line and it will generate the following file;
_BOOT_MP_gbfs.ds.gba
Rename to:
_BOOT_MP_gbfs.nds
Boot to NDS mode and run :) .
I had some static the first time I ran it, after that it was clean sounding and very nice to listen to.... an excellent home brew app. I only tried it with one MP3 so far, I will load a few into it later and try then.

I updated to the new version v2+4! its aswome that he moved the file menu to the top, but now I can't see any jpgs!! and there small less than 1mb files, with the old version i was looking at pictures that were over 1mb....hum...i wonder if hes planning on fixing it.

imo moving the fileview to the top totally defeats the enitre point of the touchscreen since now you cant browse directories with the stylus which is rather annoying, im moving back to the old version for now

whats the maximum file size you've been able to use on the SC?
EDIT:
I just dumped about 99Mb of mp3s on there SC reads it fine :)
mp3 wise it plays the 1st 3 ok
then I get this
decoding error 0x0101 (lost synchronization) at byte offset 11081160
maybe this is my fault for using large files
EDIT:
also I see that the gbfs does not support long filenames

The SuperCard has 32 MB (256 Mbit) of RAM, enough to cover the whole GBA ROM/Option Pak address space.

Correct. GBFS is currently limited to 24 character file names. If there's enough demand, I may add a format extension and a new function called gbfs_get_nth_name().

I had to rename all my mp3's before i ran app, then my supercard could play all the songs; i also thru a m4a at it to see if it could take some on my itunes songs that i compressed, the debug said that it didnt support that format yet. I think i put 10 songs on it only and all ran, so i haven't tried going over 100MB yet on the supercard. But what an app, very nice to use instead of Filmplay.

Yep...txt files are supported now which is awesome.
Now when he includes a Videoplayer too , I can send my GBAMP official firmware to hell.

Not going to happen. The GBAMP has 512KB of flash and that's it. The last time I checked, MoonShell is larger than that. Besides, with the number of updates being made it is easier to just over write the NDS file on the CF card. About the speed: As soon as you can see MoonShell (even the startup screen) it is fully loaded. It takes so long to start after that because it has to decompress the fonts and background.

There should be examples of how to do this. If not, ask.

I haven't encountered any real bugs yet but it would be great if there's a zoom feature for the picture viewer.
Also a stylus controlable mp3-player skin(you know with "play","stop","repeat" etc buttons) would be neat.

I hope Infantile Paralysiser will add international characters support for text reader (beside japanese codepage, which is already implemented), especially for cyrillic (codepage 1251) :) Also configurable plugin system would be nice (like one in PogoShell).
#51286 - shoremunkey - Wed Aug 17, 2005 11:50 pm
He continues to update real fast, "MoonShell for cyrillic testupload" he?s also mention that the "The cause of the bug to which jpeg of 1MB or more was not able to be displayed was able to be understood." which I think he meant that he figured out why it was happening.
I downloaded the newest version, well I hope he fixes soon. The thing that makes no since is that I have small jpegs that I transferred from my mobile phone that It can't display correctly, but there?s much larger files that I created in MS Paint that do display correctly. When I click on the pictures from my mobile phone the DS freezes. There?s an 8mb file jpeg that I open and it doesn't freeze but I don't see anything its just a giant black window.
Would it be hard to implement a play list feature or possibly the ability to automatically play the next song when the previous one has finished?
Well I'm glad to know that he's listening to us.

Ah, well if he is taking feature requests, I wouldn't mind a way to lock down the L and R buttons so I don't accidentally change tracks and things when I put the DS into my pocket while playing MP3s.
Also, if he's reading this, I love this program...excellent work on this, it's great stuff. :)

Cyrillic suport is working ! Cyrillic long filenames are working correctly. But text display still have some bugs (i.e. missing characters on the right edge of screen, happens if word is too long to fit in one line and need to be broken into 2 parts and carried over : one part in 1st line, and second in the beginning on the next line).

You know that a 8MB pic might be so huge that you have to do a little scrolling via stylus to enter another part of your pic(There isn't a scaling feature in the pic viewer yet).what's the resolution of the 8MB pic?

Oops I was off actually it was a 800kb file ha-ha, the resolution is pretty big and I understand you can scroll and I can scroll through the image it just that all I see is a big black image instead of the image I?m suppose to be there. The Resolution if 1600x1200 I know its an extremely large file, but since I can open I was wondering if maybe its a bug rather than the fact that the image is to big, because I tried slightly larger files and those won't even open period. It would be great to have scaling feature and be able to run at least 1.5mb files in my case for the fact that my digital camera uses compact flash so I can view the pictures I taken via NDS.
My mobile pictures are like 32kbs or less and the max resolution of some of them is 600x480. I do notice under properties in the summary tab it does have an extra Property its called color presentation and the value is sRGB. Maybe it?s that?

There's not exactly enough memory to hold the whole image decompressed. 1600x1200 pixels at 16 bits per pixel is nearly 3.7 MiB (compare to DS EWRAM size of 4.0 MiB), and the JPEG viewer might not be prepared for such a large image. What happens when you scale it down to 800x600 pixels and try again?

If JPEG files as you receive them are progressive, then try 'jpegtran' from the IJG JPEG package. IJG's site is currently down, but the functionality might be present in the Windows GUI fork called jpegcrop.

Oh, and read the INI! He made an option to disable L and R when the lid of the DS is closed. I like this guy more and more. :)
And by the way, I can't seem to write ImpactFS files to the NDS either...I get some kind of an error it would seem, there's no change in the file.
Erm, ok...on a hunch, I deleted the folder, re-extracted it from the zip, and prevented windows from writing a thumbs.db into it because of the bitmap in there...and now it works. Not sure exactly why this would work this way, but why complain?
*editing once again*
Ah ok, I got it now...there's a filesize limit. That makes sense. Try reducing the color depth of your bitmap to save space. Here's mine:
Desktop
Doesn't have anything to do with Moonshell, honestly, but how can you go wrong with a hot ninja chick eh?

Sorry, I don't have MoonShell running right now so this post will probably be a little less than descriptive.
What's up with the GBAFS feature? I know that I can load media onto the CF card and access it through the second option, but it looks like there's other ways to do this. Has anyone tried appending MP3's to the end of the rom and accessing them that way?
#51598 - misunoko - Mon Aug 22, 2005 5:53 am
i am pretty sure that is for a flash cart (not gbamp)

I tried to make a custom background by replacing the background.bmp file....but it still displays the old one. How do you do this? I'm using the flashcart gbfs version. |
Replace the .bmp file then run the WriteFiles_IMFS.bat file this will update the _BOOT_MP.nds in the same directory, flash the new _BOOT_MP.nds to you GBAMP then your done
the destop i am using at the moment is http://www.mod-freak.com/moonshell/desktop.bmp
it looks very nice on the ds screen. i will be making more soon, maybe this one or another one could be the desktop in the official release one day ;) |
yeah...but i'm not using a GBAMP, i'm using a flash cart. Has anybody had any luck with a custom background while using the gbfs method?
#51614 - misunoko - Mon Aug 22, 2005 9:54 am
run the WriteFiles_gbfs.bat instead of the other bat then it will update the .ds.gba file

Seems that he needs help to get a proper english "readMe"-tutorial done:
Quote: |
A Japanese version : though I will write.
Will you write the English simple tutorial of someone's MoonShell?
It is glad when there is such a content.
Easy outline of function of MoonShell.
Parts necessary to use MoonShell.
Simple procedure until starting.
Start method for GBFS(FlashCart).
Method of changing codepage(language set).
Method of changing global.ini setting.
Method of changing desktop.bmp
Action method when not starting FAQ.
Please teach when other items that seem that you should add it exist
|
I will start to write a .txt-file with the functions of Moonshell and what you'll need to use it.I hope I'm done by tomorrow morning.
Any volunteers who will write the other parts?
update : I am done with "Moonshell functions" and "needed parts"-ReadMe now. Grap it HERE.
update 2: "Starting Moonshell"(GBAMP and FlashCart methode) added.Use link above to get it.
IF i can find time I will do some other parts too.sorry if not.

However, I don't think a translation into Toki Pona would be possible.

umm.... isn't it a GBA Movie Player? As you probably realized once you got to "meh", you can still boot the card in GBA mode with your PassMe adapter and use the new Crystal Engine codec.

@ tepples:
Yeah the GBAMP IS a movie player but I'm with him.
It's especialy the screensize which makes that much difference.
I realized that when I compared "PocketNES" with "NESDS".
When it fills the whole screen it feels somehow better.... ;)

Hey uh, this may already be coverd in this large topic but I wanted to ask if this works with flash cards at all? Im using an EZFA cart and last time I tried the file implanting it kept giving me errors. I havent tried it out with the newest version yet (I tried the one before it though)
Currently Im busy with my Flashcart and dont wanna erase everything just yet, so has anyone tried this out successfully?
Also, this program work well with the SD version of the Super Card? Im planing on buying one soon, though CF just sems too bulky for me.
Awsome program though.

Changing the desktop image doesn't work for me in the latest version. Now when I run the WriteFiles_IMFS.bat file I get what I believe to be an error window (no letters, only strange symbols...) at the end of the operation and there's no change made to the file. Anyone else get this?

It sounds like the problem I had. The files you are writing to the ImpactFilesystem are too large. Try deleting the NSF in there, make sure windows isn't putting a thumbs.db in there if you're using XP, and if all else fails reduce the color depth of your image (which should cut the size of the bitmap pretty well).
I assume this is happening because Moonshell requires a certain amount of free ram, so going over a certain size with the NDS binary would cause problems.

You need to increase IMFS size, just change bat-files in in folder "ChangeCodePage", i set IMFS size to 756kb (default is 96 kb i guess), so now i can read books at home even without flashcard, i just send moonshell over WiFi (with flashme) ... please add it to readme too :) btw i made some controls and textview tweaks to version 02p6 - it's enought if you only read books (http://www.gbx.ru/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=2641 231.59kb), IMFS set to 756kb and codepage to cp1251

in specific:

VLC is a free cross-platform media player.
* It supports a large number of multimedia formats, without the need for additionnal codecs
* It is available for almost every OS

|
its open-source as well, and i was thinking about a possible port? anyone interested in dissecting it?
#52158 - tepples - Sat Aug 27, 2005 4:56 pm
Things such as VLC are also targeted to machines with an 867 MHz CPU (like my nearly 5-year-old PC), not a 67 MHz CPU. "Needs little CPU power" in this case more than likely refers to only a small percentage of a typical 1000 to 3000 MHz desktop machine.

you have to encode the avi file into a dmv file using the included program. The quality is a bit nasty for this codec but its a start!

#52289 - Lukaso - Mon Aug 29, 2005 12:37 pm
Yes, and include the .dmv file. It is actually just an updated version of moonshell, w/ the file browser and all. So you can also add multiple dmv's to your CF.
u can either convert the dmv to 4/8/16 fps, but more fps means lower resolution. Important notice: double-tap the touch screen for full screen video viewing (hooray) ^_^
(im converting an episode of the simpsons right away :P)
#52290 - zubiac - Mon Aug 29, 2005 12:51 pm
huh?
Am I the only one who's video is flipped upside-down after converting?
suggestion:
I guess it would be better to display the video on upper screen because it is a bit clearer than the lower screen.
But I really have to say "Congratulation" because (like Kir already said) the video-output is already better than anything the "Crystal engine" was able to do.
awesome work again

I don't exactly know what you mean with "grid like noise pattern " but video-output looks slightly better on the upper screen cause it hasn't the grainy look of the touchscreen.
And wouldn't it be better to have the videoplayer-controls on the touchscreen while video itself is displayed on upper screen?
anyways...I'm really happy already that we even have a good videoplayer for DS now.

Ofcourse the screen layout isnt optimized yet, but that doesnt really matter because the video function is still in an early stage.
#52309 - El Hobito - Mon Aug 29, 2005 3:47 pm
the noisy look of the screen are compression artifacts not the screen itself so swapping the screens will only make the interface awkward
#52311 - falcon!!! - Mon Aug 29, 2005 4:11 pm
sigh
i dont know what avi file to put in the converter...I tried one made with a digital camera and the sound it's absolutely orripilant.
Cant you give me some avi that work?

wtf?
You make a movie with your digital camera and expect that the sound is good? It's pretty normal that the sound IS crappy on digital cameras(exept very expensive cameras w?th "good" micros).Maybe the sound is even compressed.
Download any movie(for example a game-movie from gametrailers) and convert it to AVI with the free software "RAD Video Tool". Then you will know if it works for you or not

I think this CODEC has great potential. It already seems to be around GBAMP level, and sound sounds much nicer on the DS than it did via the GBAMP's regular software. I tried around 5 anime openings/endings I had on my HD, they didn't look bad for the most part, although the grid-like artifacts made one of the videos really odd looking. Oh yes, and I'm pretty impressed by the fact that you can move the video window around and the video still plays, heh. I wasn't expecting that to work. :)
If this progresses it'll definitely beat out the GBAMP's video playing quality I think. Moonlight is doing some cool work here.

grrr...
YOU are talking about the video itself but I am talking about the screen.
The lower(bottom) screen looks slightly(just a little bit) grainier than the upper screen because of the touchscreen-feature.
Like shackynews and dozens of others posted:
The bottom screen is not as clear, but for good reason; it?s the one you touch. Because of that, it appears slightly grainy and not as bright. It might not even be worth mentioning if it wasn?t for the top screen shining brilliantly above it.
That's also why GBA games look a bit shinier on the top screen.

the difference is barely noticeable and the last thing moonlight should be worrying about. In any case the screens themselves are identical bar the outer covering so no, one isnt brighter than the other.
Hey moonlight, at some point what would be a nice touch interface wise would be to provide a button, maybe in the top righthand corner, to swap the screen around. I for one would prefer to select files with the touchscreen but others may not

I tried to convert a few .avi's. Every time, I got a message that looked like an error, but the message was just question marks.
#52357 - joebob180 - Tue Aug 30, 2005 1:49 am
Are they DivX? I belive that the encoding software only allows for standard AVI files. Try converting it to AVI with RAD tools first. Someone reccomended that earlier in the thread and posted the link.
#52358 - Filb - Tue Aug 30, 2005 2:02 am
Hmm, the avi2dmv doesn't work for me.
The error message is:
0 による浮動小数点数除算 (0 Floating point number division)
What's wrong? (*_*;
Edit: They use the DivX codec - do I have to use uncompressed AVI files?
Edit2: It works with uncompressed AVI! Good work!

I have a whole bunch of AVIs encoded in DiVX...they work just fine. O_o The only codec I had problems with is the lossless HuffyUV codec, but I've found that codec can be a little odd outside of a program such as VirtualDub anyway.
*edit*
Wow, I probably need to adjust the FPS a bit because the audio desynced some in the space of the seven minute clip, but I just tried a widescreen clip of the movie Spirited Away at the highest resolution at I think it was 8 FPS...this looked superior to GBAMP in my opinion, very cool. The grid artifact isn't that noticable at higher resolutions. I did find a small bug though...on that clip at least part of the top of the screen wasn't covered in a black bar like it was in the lower res clips I also made...some of the video window in back of it was showing.

I'm terribly impressed, because delving into video decoding/converting must be a pain in the ASS. Way more difficult than the MP3s JPGs and TXT files...
#52371 - falcon!!! - Tue Aug 30, 2005 8:44 am
sorry but am I the only one who get terrible sound (noise not sound)?
Not only in the video but also in the mp3s...
Now I wil tri other avi but the mp3 were corrupted.

#52379 - falcon!!! - Tue Aug 30, 2005 11:56 am
I dont know if u noticed that, but there is a bug...
If u play some mp3s after playing a dmv, they are corrupted
That doesnt happen if u play the mp3s first.
edit: anyway I dont know who's the person doing all this work, but i want to say him something :
YOU RULE!!!! YOU PUT IN SO EFFORT!!!! YOU ROCK!!!
edit: Thank you! you corrected the bug!!!

Mine took 11 working days to arrive, think of it as 10 working days give or take a couple, then you can have all the fun

I can't get this to work with avi or mpg. Compressed or uncompressed avi, same thing. All files in the same folder, or not. It always gives some ???????? error. Can someone post a .dmv file so I can watch? :)

Correction of bug that the upper part of screen is transparent at full-screen and the operation test are done now. |
Wow, sounds like he fixed the bug with the black bars in Widescreen video mode also..this fellow's fantastic. :) What a jack of all trades also...getting into video compression/decompression, porting an MP3 library, just all the functions of Moonshell...I wish I knew how to program all these things. I'm just a newbie though. :)
