Well, it looks like version 0.3 to be released today. I see there's significant optimisations in video player - 14 fps at 192х144 , and 8 fps at 256x192 !!! Almost two times faster than in the previous version.
I completely agree with The 9th Sage - Infantile Paralysiser, you're amazing programmer !

do you think it's better higher resolution or faster frame rate?
ANd quantize is best to be set to 1, isnt'it?

depends on your personal taste and what you watch(animation or real).
I will take "256x144" @ 9frames as i like the video to be not that blocky.
dunno what you want.
just try some setting and you will see

this is really amazing
i just converted a 10MB mpeg of F-Zero from E3 a couple of years ago
settings i put in avi2dmv were:
128x96 resolution, 30fps, quantize x4.00
the video was a little flickery, and some of those blocks from such a low res, but it looked like it stayed at 30fps the whole way through
then decided to try the same but at 256x192 resolution...
unfortunately it froze, but i'm still impressed
keep up the great work infantile paralysiser

Hello
Now that we can hide the windows on the lower screen I've figured I could make a picture that I liked to be shown down there. So I did this one:
http://tull.planetaclix.pt/20050831_desktop_moonshell.rar
Hope you like it:)
I've made a little readmeplease.txt explaining how to change the picture. It's not dificult, but I did it just in case.
Tell me what you think!
I know I'm not saying anything new, but the guy/girl is really amazing:)

hmm, the dmvenc tool included in the 03 release doestn work for me. I get an error message with every moviefile i open.
edit: thnx tuLL, the dll can be found in the wintools folder, make sure it is in the same folder as the dmvenc.
in the dmvenc tool the max framerates are also outdated:
( 14 fps at 192х144 , and 8 fps at 256x192)
But i must say, and im sure ill speak for al the members of this forum, im a very impressed, u manage to bring so many updates in such little time and the updates that you make are also very useful, whith the movie playing at the topscreen and increased fps, im certain i will never use the old gbamp software again (-_-)

Heh, this is sad.
I installed win2kpro under qemu on my gentoo box to see how this runs.
Got it to work right away, even though I'm only getting an encode rate of 3fps.
I've been using this japanese "Fire Emblem" GBA commercial for testing. Has a cute girl & shots of the game itself.
http://gameads.gamepressure.com/tv_game_commercial.asp?ID=2750
Now it'd be nice to have the source to this and have dvm support in ffmpeg so's I could rip my veggie tales videos directly from dvd (for my daughter).
I guess I could also do this in wine if I knew what dlls' were needed to run the encoder.

What is the error?
WMV, for what I know it encodes only uncompressed AVI's (no DIVX, XVid, the likes) and mpegs.
#52572 - leoedin - Wed Aug 31, 2005 11:19 pm
ok
well, it was a WMV, which appeared in the menu as an option, so I thought you could encode them. I'll just get a raw AVI and try that :)

Hi
Well, either you make the global.ini unreadable which is not proable or the bat is not finding the programs. Try to download again the latest zip and unzip it without changing the directory structure.
Hope it helps. If it doesn't give the more details you can, so we can help better:)

Hi
I tried to encode an wmv file and it went alright with no errors. But when I put it in the CF card and run it on the DS only the first image appears. The sound is ok but it gets stuck on the first frame or second.
Same thing happened to you?
EDIT: Well same thing happened when I converted an MPEG (that I had previously converted) with more frames per second.
I'm converting the same wmv as before, but with the "normal" frames per second. I'll re-edit in a short while.
EDIT2: Well it plays the sound well as before, but the picture goes twice as fast. So its no good. I'm not sure but I think the wmv videos are not standartly encoded, I mean, there are a lot of "dirty" wmvs. But I can be wrong. Going to try some more wmvs, if there's any success I'll post it here.
(by the way, sorry for the double post :|)

Is anyone else having a problem getting version 3p1 to boot? It seems as though it boots, but won't display the file browser...I don't see the time either, although that window is displayed. I hope I'm not the only one having this problem, that would stink. >_>
*edit*
Oh, and by the way, according to the top screen it has read the INI and is reporting the free memory available...that's just where it freezes there.

To Infantile Paralysiser :
It seems that video suffers from bad colours saturation. Maybe it's because you use YUV 4:1:1 , not 4:2:0 (like in MPEG2) ? Last time I converted some of my homemade videos, and resulting video was almost black & white.
Also, how about bookmarks for TXT files ? Because it's the only thing that forces me to launch original firmware...

From his site, it sounds as though he accidentally uploaded a debug version of MoonShell instead of the regular version...that's fixed it for me.

you should really look in ebay or at pawn shops for cheap CF cards.
I found one(32MB...better than nothing) in a thrown-away broken digicam.

I really don't know what you want to tell me(us)?
You mean perhaps that sound and video are out of sync?
Or that there are some freezes in your converted videos?
When you mean the short freezes:
I got them too several times and didn't know why till I realized that the conversion-software doesn't like it when I run too many other apps at the same time.I guess I have too less RAM(256).
anyways...I solved this "prob".I am just running the Encoder and no RAM-eating apps too(at the same time).

Sometimes it just hangs for a few seconds...Sometimes it hangs at the start en never continues(the music does play correct, the player doesnt crash or anything)
Ill try to encode with no other programs running... (i thought i already did that the first time), and in the taskmanager ill set the convertor property to 'above normal'

Hi
I had some problems with changing the colors, the "global.ini" has 2 bugs:
- You have to remove the ";" before the variables
- You have to join them all together, example:
Abc=12
Abc=13
Has to be:
Abc=12
Abc=13
Hope it helps. And hope I'm not mistaken:)

If it works as a ds.gba ROM, then it'll probably work on the SuperCard (albeit without saving).

Noo! The supercard does not support ds.gba!
I think it will able to load the Bootmp.gbfs.nds (or something like that) file that's the corrispondent to the ds.gba file.
Is it so?
Ps: have u heard the news? ther's a new gbamp firmware update e.19
It supports long filenames.!
ROTFL!!!
#52732 - tepples - Fri Sep 02, 2005 3:14 pm
SuperCard with the latest SC firmware supports ds.gba files; it's just a bit dyslexic about them. You just have to rename them to .gba.nds when you put them on the card.

no not really the supercard can do some other things but in the end its just a rip off of the gbamp with ram in for pirating gba games. It cant do all the gba part of the gbamp (ie the crystal engine videos). Might as well get the m3 when it comes out!

u should follow the indications on the converter
128x96 16 fps
192x144 8 fps
256x192 4 fps
ANyway i found out that if you dont follow that limit, the video freezes after some seconds...But it starts

i found 128x96 at 30fps and quantize at 4.0x was quite good, except for a black flicker in every 5 or so frames. can't wait till its optimized, should be exceptionally good then

It defines "blockiness" of the video. Small quantizator = Lesser blocks in resulting video.
#52848 - Sebbo - Sat Sep 03, 2005 10:00 pm
i found that the frame rate is a bit smoother when quantize is set to 4 instead of 1, which is what i think its supposed to do:
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=define%3A+quantize&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official

so in relation to video, i assume it improves the accuracy in the time delay between each frame, which makes it run smoother

Yes, but with quantize set to 4, the videos look bad :(
THere's already a lack of colour in the dmv video, and if you also set quantize to 4 they become even less colorful.
Amyway what's the best settings (frame/resolution/quantize) from your tests?
#52869 - falcon!!! - Sun Sep 04, 2005 9:19 am
have u tried with 256x192/ 8 fps and quantized (2,3,4..)?
Does it work? Because I tried those settings but with quantize 1x and it freezed.
#52871 - Sebbo - Sun Sep 04, 2005 9:34 am
well, first thing i noticed is that quantize x1.0 is 456KB, x4.0 is 236KB, and everything in between steps down
the multicoloured artefacts also appear to b more visible in x4.0, actually the video itself is a bit more pixelated and blockier too
because the files were so small, it was difficult to tell which was smoother, but in the end i think i noticed some motion that was in x1.0 that was skipped out in x4.0
i'm gonna say that it depends on how big your file is. i've noticed that a large video runs smoother at high quantize, but if your running a smaller file leave the quantize at 1.0

yeah, it supports 3 file systems: MPCF (movie player compact flash) GBFS (game boy file system(?)) and IMFS (implant file system). moonshell includes the tools for creating the imfs which is kinda like a zip...in windows etc you see only the one file, but it contains several files inside it

Anyway I converted the same video to 256x192 8fps amd 192x144 16 fps both with quantize 4x and both look good :) I suggest to view the 192x144 in the lower screen so it will fit better ;)

I was wondering how much power from the ds is needed to play mp3's. Is it possible to use mp3's as background music for games (like Perfect Dark on the n64).

opening small .BMP files displays them in a row repeatingly. Space around them is corrupted. If the BMP is big enough (it needs scrolling to show full) it works just fine.

the best way to convert movies i have found is using "IMTOO mpeg encoder" and encode it to MPEG-1 then using the dvm converter. IMTOO will convert anything i have converted countless movies to my ds
episode 1-40 of red vs blue
matrix 1 2 and 3
and the first season of black books

Those wounds which are showed now on his site are def. not car crash injuries. These are carpetknife cuts done by himself.I guess he(if it's even him on the photos) suffers from a self-injurying(sp?) sickness.I saw similar photos when I studied psychologie. You can see already healed (horizontal)cuts on his arm under the fresh (vertical) cuts.
I hope he's doing well and gets any help needed.

hi infantile paralysizer.
I'm happy that u've done a 256x192 video with 24 fps.

16 fps should be enough, dont'u think?

yes welcome. with a single program you've already managed to reach "legend" status, so i'm sure everyone will look up to you
and ouch indeed on the movie size, need 3.6GB for a 2 hour movie... are there any open-source video codecs laying around, as i've had the dmv converter crash on me while trying to convert a full length mpg (it makes it to quantizing, then decides it can't do any more)
do keep up the great work, i'm thinking of getting a 2GB CF card just for this program and music

First time I tried the new version, Moonshell started from Darkains loader from my flashcard, but it didn't respond. Then it never worked again. It sais:
boot MoonShell
blabla
set DefaultCodePage is 932.
Local2UnicodeTable size=65510.
IMFS_GetFileDataFromIndex
Request malloc(size)
Thats it.
Touchscreen remains black.
Any ideas? Why did it run first time? (without responding)

i cant wait for the day that infantile paralysizer desides to impliment chishm's multi-nds loader for the new gbamp firmware!!, then moonshell will pretty much take over the need for any other type of gui on the ds, or what would really be cool is if there was some kind of scripting tool that you could right mini apps that ran inside moonshell!.

Not sure if that would be possible because DSP (Digital Signal Processing) takes up a lot of processor power up. and from what i gather, decoding the mp3 itself takes up most of the processor power as it is.

With MP3 you can cheat on the equalizer because MP3 is a sub-band/transform codec, and you can scale the individual sub-bands. Winamp's graphic EQ does this.

Attention: I do not know recent information.
New firmware (Ver2) for GBAMP did not start MoonShell.
I thought, "Software that the ARM7 code is different from the standard doesn't start". (software different from standard IPC interface)
I cannot write the code now.
It is free that everyone remodels MoonShell. The code that I wrote is free. It is free to open the remodeling goods to the public. It is also free to do include to another work.
However, it is applied only to the code that I wrote. The library where include was done is another. (libmad/png/etc.)
see you again.

This is because MoonShell expects the memory to be filled with 00s, but Darkain's loader doesn't do it. It is caused a bug in both programs. I had this problem when writing the new firmware for GBAMP, but I managed to fix it. This is why it takes 3 seconds to boot the new GBAMP firmware hack.

MoonShine:
I would advise you to use libnds from now on, and the latest version of DevKitPro. NDSlib is no longer being worked on. If you want help getting the new GBAMP Ver2 firmware features in to MoonShell, I can do that. The only problem is that MoonShell doesn't compile properly on my setup, due to the old libraries being used.

In a decoder for a variable bit rate format such as MP3, bit rate shouldn't matter as much as playback frequency and number of channels in an audio stream. Are they mono or stereo? Are they 22 kHz, 32 kHz, or 44 kHz?

I believe they were 22050Hz, which the new version of MoonShell is supposed to support, so I will try that.
The bitrate was 64kbps, so I'm sure that's not the problem..they should work now.
Now alls I have to worry about is the fact that directories with many files in it at once will not play, and actually crash moonshell. It's nothing that directories can't fix, but I was actually trying to avoid pulling out my DS every time I wanted to swap directories. Ah well.

You're wrong, dude :) They're not custom drivers but MBR sectors from different CF cards. One for SanDisk, one for TDK.
Hey, chishm! Looks like that was meant for you. Infantile Paralysiser said that only specifically formatted CF cards work with Moonshell ( as _BOOT_MP.NDS ) . Looks like some kind of bug in firmware hack V2 or GBA MP filesystem driver.

MoonShell:
Let me understand correctly. When you try to run MoonShell from the CF card it doesn't load at all. You then load it by WMB and it works. After starting it you can then run another NDS from the CF card. Is this right? Can you then load MoonShell from the CF card using the MoonShell you started from WMB?
I am thinking this won't be a simple Boot sector problem, but rather a root directory problem.

Yes. It is very correct.
Next, I tried the test of specification.
1. MoonShell start from WMB
2. FileSelector to '_BOOT_MP.nds (MoonShell)' item.
3. MultiBoot start from CF (plug_ndsrom.cpp)
4. ok. restart MoonShell.
Moreover, the dump log of the CF another card was added. Please refer.

add edit.
If _BOOT_MP.nds is first started from CF, it becomes GBA mode.

i think u need GBAMP V2 firmware to use the new moonshell.
#55661 - Kir - Fri Sep 30, 2005 10:11 am
Well, it runs fine on my GBA MP V1 with firmware hack v2. Of course, without any multiloaders - pure _BOOT_MP.NDS. Video quality improved, but there's significant desynchronisation between audio & video. Video runs faster than audio, at least at default settings (256x192x9). Colors saturation is also improved, but still differ from originals. Keep up good work, Infantile Paralysiser!
P.S.
I think it's time to do readme files update. I'll do it when come back to home from my work. I'm also planning to write small app for comfortable Moonshell settings editing (global.ini parameters, languages, etc.).
P.P.S.
Just found out that text files are now limited to ~320Kb, larger ones will cause "malloc LinesCache out of memory" :( .

I'm also planning to write small app for comfortable Moonshell settings editing (global.ini parameters, languages, etc.).

betatest has some already-known bugs.
PCM is at least defective.
there is sample data in //IMFS/.
Please try when there are bugs other than 'Extreme click noise' in the DMV reproduction.
The size of the maximum file is remarkably limited because of the sample data.
This problem doesn't exist in a public version.
Readme and the global.ini editor are very useful. I am expecting it very much.
I cannot confirm the bug that MoonShell doesn't start.
Was 'Start with WifiMe' tried?I want more detailed information for the defect.
Another topic. As for MoonShell, only multi boot cannot be done, and firmware V1 of GBAMP operates.
betatestはいくつかの既知のバグがあります。
少なくともPCMは不良です。
//IMFS/にサンプルデータが入っています。

I have that problem. Setting the audio to Mono fixes that problem, but the video is still black and distorted.
I don't know how to fix it. Maybe it's a new bug in dmvenc.exe...

Because I want also to examine it closely, I want the media file.

Hmm. I've used DMV Encoder included in Moonshell 0.3p2, and resulting video was a black screen with random color dots. Audio was playing fine. I can send you converted .dmv file, but it's quite big (~9 Mbytes)... PM me your e-mail address, if you want me to send it to you.
DMV Encoder beta with Moonshell beta were playing ok, excluding a/v desynchronisation.

MoonShell betatest2 uploaded. but ADPCM bug corrected only.
DMV made from dmvenc.exe(Moonshell0.3p2) cannot be decoded by Moonshell betatest1/2.
I am sorry not compatible.
Moreover, the DMV file made from dmvenc_betatest.exe will not be able to be decoded in a stable (next) version.
It is glad when permitting for the speed priority.

what does the last update mean?
2005年10月03日
ふぅむ。
ベンチマ?あ、死んだってさ。ま、しゃーないね。眠いし後で書こう。
実家。死んでる。実感湧かないなぁ。硬いけど。
256x192pixel/32frameの展開描画時間。テストははるのあしおとのトレイラームービーだから元々相当重い(場面展開が速い)データ。
compress type / 32frame decode time(ms) / 無圧縮サイズ対圧縮サイズ比
無圧縮 4880ms 1:1
zlib 4027ms 1:0.457
bzip2 9565ms 1:0.434
lzss 3790ms 1:0.542

Wow, so you can run video of 256x192 at 12 frames a second now? That's quite an optimization over the last non-beta release. ^_^

If you change the appropriate setting in the INI, you can have it so that the L and R button are active when the DS is closed, letting you Pause and Change Songs respectively.

So far as I know, it sounds like only the beta releases have this optimised video, so I guess they probably didn't change the FPS listed in the program since it isn't out of beta yet, and it sounds like he's still very much working on getting the FPS limit even higher.

It is not possible to correspond because I do not have M3.
ARM7 takes charge of ADPCM codec.
ARM9 takes charge of the video codec.
DMV is a very simple codec.

Beta 3 is out :) Hope a/v synchronisation is ok in this version.
P.S.
Just found a bug in DMV Encoder. I'm using the same CastlevaniaDS.wmv trailer as in earlier betas, and this time encoder almost froze at frame 810 of 1047. SourceImage and ComressedImage shows black screens, fps counter is at 1 fps, bytesperframe graphic completely cut. DMV Encoder window is giving very large response time (i.e while moving it on screen)...
#55997 - Kir - Wed Oct 05, 2005 7:22 am
Well, it seems that bug is in WMV Decoder. I converted WMV to MPG, then used DMV Encoder - it worked like a charm. But resulting DVM file couldn't be played on DS. In upper 2/3 of the screen it just shows random color dots, in lower 1/3 - some vertical lines of different colors. Sound plays ok, though.
#56011 - Lukaso - Wed Oct 05, 2005 1:58 pm
used the latest beta(3)
converted a .wmv, played it on ds, sound worked fine, exept a few 'ticks' every second.
Video was just a still image of random coloured pixels on a black screen.

Movie that it is complex and the switch is fast stops because it is heavy.
High resolution DMV requests CF.
Please use high-speed, new CF.
However, it is likely to freeze still. It is regrettable.

all my movies, hung after a few seconds, and then continued, and hung again, and so on...
Now i tried the update u gave for the final beta, u encoded a clip with the updated dmvenc and it seemed to run well. After some time, about 20 sec, the screen turns blue or green. The sound still continues and u can still fast forward or rewind, but the screens stays green. when u cancell the movie and try a new one it doesnt work and moonshell hangs.

'High-speed frame skip' bug as corrected.
http://home.att.ne.jp/blue/moonlight/mft2.zip
There is no change in dmvenc.exe.
The frame did not drop to issinoho.
Therefore, trouble did not occur.
There seems considerably to be an individual difference by CF.
Can I speed it up by the program?
I want to manage to do by the program.
Though it might be a dream.
However, being able to complete even with a slow CF card to the last
minute is a great reward.

'Decoding Error' when seeking it is normal.
A frame on the way is annulled. It is reproduced from the following
frame.
Because the annulled time is 0.026sec, it is not anxious.

But, how about playing MP3? Some already posted about it.
Playing MP3 has been somewhat broken since MoonShell was released.
Sometimes track jumps & skips happen. Does this happen because of

Anyway, your program is awesome! Keep working. Good luck.

Mp3 rang normally. I am glad.
It is up to 4TB because it manages DMV by 4bytes. However, CF of 4TB doesn't exist.
It is a bug of the encoder or the decoder if there is DMV that cannot be reproduced.

Only one stream can be involved to DMV.
It is not possible to deal with me because the chapter becomes a very complex format.

Infantile Paralysiser just wanted to warn us all not to run suspicious romloader.nds, which appeared in the Net not so long ago. romloader.nds in fact is a trojan, like Trojan.PSPBrick. If you're stupid enough to run it on yours DS, it erases portions of DS firmware, and thus brickyfies your DS. Hopefully, if you installed FlashMe before that, you can try to start in Recovery mode (A+B+Select+Start during boot) and restore firmware.

The lip synch is *slightly* out, but only very slightly and if you use the seek bar it seems to rectify itself. Not bad enough to bother me.
What is more troublesome is the size of the files. A render at that quality of a 70Mb AVI results in a 120Mb DMV file. It would be lovely to get that down a tad.
I would agree though, the picture quality is brilliant.
Out of interest what is the biggest video file you have successfully encoded?

Just for the record... what is the main reason for encoding to DMV? Is there a good reason why a DivX/Xvid Mpeg-4 decoder could not run natively on ths DS in the same way the MP3 decoder works?
#56265 - MaHe - Fri Oct 07, 2005 3:24 pm
Well, it demands way more CPU speed, IIRC.
It'd be nice though, to just run VirtualDub, select the correct resolution and bitrate and put the file on CF...

An audio decoder running at CD spec has to decode 44100*2 = 88,200 signal points per second. A video decoder running at full screen 24fps has to decode 256*192*24 = 1,179,648 signal points per second in addition to the audio. It's difficult to get a decoder optimized that far, especially given that MPEG-4 video (DivX/XviD) is more computationally complex than MPEG-1 video. This is part of why Play-Yan uses an external decoder on the GBA cartridge and why GBA Video uses a much less complex codec.

issinoho: i'm at work at the moment and the largest i have encoded is about 130Mb -also i have had a 212Mb file crash while trying to encode.
#56281 - Lukaso - Fri Oct 07, 2005 4:47 pm
Yes, its working very well now, no more crashes at all!!
2 minor problems:
The audio and video get out of sync quite fast(the video plays a little slower)
there is a line at the right of the screen, width = 1 pixel, height is about 3/5 of the screen
except those two things it's woking fantastic!

Tap your bottom screen. The video transfers to the top screen and not only looks better but gets rid of that right-hand bar.

MoonShell - any reason for this?

no, i mean the topscreen. There is a line about 1 pixel wide and 3/5 of the screen high. it is in the middle of the topscreen all the way to the right
(just i minor problem though)

i still find some bugs in mp3 and dmv that freezes the ds...
i think I will bring back my 3+1 version
#56299 - devmani - Fri Oct 07, 2005 8:12 pm
Me,too. Playing MP3 musics still sometimes stumbles.
#56324 - MoonShell - Fri Oct 07, 2005 9:58 pm
The whole is neatly reviewed.
It is not a partial close examination.
I am wishing the following to affix it to the expectation though time hangs.
I'm sorry that a large trouble is multiplied.

I'm very excited about the next version of MoonShell, for a very specific reason. :)

This thing has NDS Bricker r0mloader protection? That's awesome. :)
EDIT:
BUG - "// FAT12 volume unsupported."
It won't read my compact flash card. (I never used to have a problem)
Don't ask me the brand, because I painted over my CF card. I don't know. *laughs*

I have a Problem.
The final Beta doesnt work on my Supercard, but I read here that it works with supercard too. It says that it cant read the CF...
how can I make just 1 NDS File of it? There is no Tool for that in the final beta release or is there?

Please try GBAMPCF FAT16Format.

cut&paste from my reply.

What is ppl?
Possibly. Is 'Single ROM' IMFS?

"ppl" is an abbreviation for "people" that some people use.

I remembered it. Thank you.

I think there should be an option to disable CrashMe protection. It is very easy to change the MD5 sum to get around the protection, so it may become useless :-( . This may simply slow the boot process for people who know what they are doing. It is a good idea, but won't always work.

The point is certainly a correct answer.
The MD5 calculation is slow. The MD5 falsification is easy.
..shell/global.ini ProtectCrashMe=x
This will be added. I think that I will make this 'ON' by default.
