DS Misc > MoonShell 0.9 updated

#68159 - MoonShell - Sun Jan 22, 2006 10:11 pm

Version 0.9 updated.

download from
http://mdxonline.dyndns.org/archives/nds/

The offset bug when the DPG window was displayed was corrected at zooming.

The window position can be overwrited.

After it had changed, it did not include it in the upgrade history because an enough test was necessary. (It is not possible to use it easily. )

I was going to point that out too. The volume control goes up to 400%, but doesn't actually get louder over 100%.

you forgot to put WAV in the list of supported files ^^

EXCELLENT JOB!

For some testing, here are some MP3s that don't like playing in Moonshell... they seem pretty normal and play in other players fine :

Era of Queens by Origa :
http://rapidshare.de/files/11605799/05_Era_Of_Queens.mp3.html

Maybe its an ID3 tag problem?

Apparently he's aware of it:

It works perfectly with Flashme v6 (flashed my firmware yesterday; I'm happy) and GBAMP. The window positioning stuff is excellent :)

Just for reference, for those who want to resize windows such as the progress bar: A window's title bar has a height of 15px.

I think that the Pictureviewer should NOT have window and scrollbar so that a 256x192 picture is shown fullscreen.

Maybe a button to send it, uncluttered, to the top screen?

Also, Id still like to be able to play music when reading ebooks.

But these are minor things.

Moonsheel rocks the new version is great :)

That button to swap the image viewer screen would probably be Select. (Perhaps it could be the same for everything in Moonshell?). It would definietly be a nice feature.

Speaking of Select, I notice that there's now a timer on that button so that it is possible to use it to switch screens that video is playing on without having it constantly alternate screens every frame for as long as Select is being held down. Is there a way to change this timer, or remove it altogether so that it only swaps screens once, each time Select is pressed?

isnt it possible to have the startup sound and wallpaper in teh rom on the Supercard version? or would that be too much work?

#68229 - ghazi - Mon Jan 23, 2006 3:34 am

Is there a way to change how files are sorted in the global.ini or something? It's not a huge deal, but I would really prefer to view my files alphabetically.

Either way, great release, Moonshell! We really appreciate all the time and effort you're putting into this. Thanks! <3

#68233 - HyperHacker - Mon Jan 23, 2006 3:50 am

Yes, alpha sorting would make it a lot easier to play MP3s in the order you want. (Just prefix them with numbers, it's how I already have to do it for my current player anyway, works fine.)

Also, a bug.
[Images not permitted - Click here to view it]
You can see several long file names are misspelled in Moonshell, but not in Windows.

Thanks again for such an awesome app though. I love being able to override the window positions. :-)

MoonShell wrote:

Various settings are read from IMFS.
It is difficult to read it from external media.

The extended partition for the font can be used when capacity in which IMFS has been reserved is insufficient.

Alright, thanks. My image looks fine in 8-bit though, so I won't need to do this.

Tip for anyone else changing the wallpaper: 640x480, 800x600 etc are all a 4:3 ratio... so is 256x192. Which means you can scale down just about any desktop wallpaper to the DS's resolution, and it won't be horribly distorted. :-) (Unless the program you do it with sucks.)

#68251 - tssf - Mon Jan 23, 2006 8:58 am

That's not really a bug, it's just really long file names. If someone wants to help Moonlight out and give him some line-scrolling code, go ahead and give it..will help with the longer filenames.

#68330 - MoonShell - Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:10 pm

hello.

dpgenc uses DirectShow.
Anything must be good if there is a codec in Windows.
This is an ideal. There seem actually to be a lot of formats that cannot be read.

I take a rest for a while if there is no fatal bug.
I keep reading this topic though it doesn't write in return.
Please report when you find a critical bug.

Thank you. Good night!

#68332 - chava - Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:22 pm

Everything works great!

There are no fatal bugs... ;)

Anyway, do anyone knows how to change skins in new moonshell??? I overwrite desktop.bmp with another, and the same with startup.mp3. I modify some facts in global.ini, and then I use CreateNDSROM_for_SuperCard.bat.

When I copy _BOOT_MP_SC.nds into my supercard, background and startup sound hasn't changed, and the global.ini isn't changed too...
What am I doing wrong???

#68333 - Edged - Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:26 pm

New moonshell works great!

Only problem I'm having with it is 20 minutes into an anime episode the picture blurs and freezes while the sound keeps going. I can remedy this by simply pressing down on my DS right before it freezes (to fast forward), but it happens on every video so I have to keep an eye out for when it will happen.

#68337 - Xtreme - Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:43 pm

Moonshell, you will need that rest. Take care.

Video playback needs some improvements.
Fast moving objects gets weird with 256kbps, 20fps.
I ripped video file out from .dpg file with dpgdec.exe.
DS / PC test: Image

Actually I would use MoonShell for playing my DVD movies and not the hardcore ones in that picture. This HDD does not have any other video clips at this time. Maybe I could make some tests with my movies when I get back to home.
For some strange reason it does not load when it has 100MB video clips in it (full DVD movie). Is this a bug in G6 flash or bug in MoonShell? G6 should not have any size limits.

It's not that it's getting cut off, though. It's actually skipping and rearranging letters near the end.

Also, minor bug: The line number in the text viewer doesn't update when you hit left or right.

BTW, some simple ideas that might be nice to have:
-Default volume level stored in INI
-Pressing B with no file open goes back a directory; in the root directory it shows a shutdown prompt.
-If at all possible, some way to jump to the firmware's various menus, Pictochat, WMB etc would be pretty neat.

No rush though, I know what you mean about needing a break. I've made some rather complicated programs myself. :-)

What is the actual video/audio format of the .dpg file format used for videos?

I ask because I use my Apple for all my programming (it's a laptop; my XP/Linux PC is a desktop, and I keep it running almost exclusively on Linux). I have mencoder (using ffmpegX as a frontend).

Smooth play on DS:

Resolution: 256
Bitrate: 96(112 is ok, too but there are these squares, but still ok)

The file information on NSF/BMP/Jpeg/MOD/SPC/WAV/MP3/DPG is displayed.

I want to ask for the test especially by the multi language this time.

The dpg decipherment is greatly influenced by the reading performance of the encode option and disk media(CF/SD/Flash).
The dithering appears when neither reading nor the decipherment is in time.

Contents of dpg are shown below.
Simple header and m1v video and GSM6.10 audio.

When the encoder for other OS is made, _dpg_const.pas might be useful.

Ah, I've figured out the problem I was having with R not always picking the next file. It bases that on the NextFile option in the music player :)
So... it's actually a feature! Although this is a bit of a problem when using R with text and images, because there is nowhere that I can change that option... (So perhaps it should just default to Next, and just hope that nobody minds?)

You can change that in the global.ini file.

Or else, while running Moonshell, just open a music file and change it in the player.

real movies(like Starwars). Cartoons are ok with this setup, too but mangas are not as good as the cartoons. Test it yourself :)

Subtitels are still a problem. They need a 256 resolution and a high bitrate(much more than 96kbp/s) when u want to read them ;)

EDIT: The 256,96kbp/s, 24fps works only fine with 16:9 movies. there are still squares with 4:3 movies(try turning the bitrate down on 4:3 movies).

Does it give you an error message (in gibberish or japanese, of course) when you run it? If it does, and it has "64K" in it, it means the files in the IMFS exceed the limit.

If this IS the problem, to fix it, go to ChangeCodePage\chgimfs. The number in each file name in this folder is the IMFS size limit. Select the one you want, rename it to _BOOT_MP.nds, and replace the default one with it.

The only other error I've encountered was a missing _BOOT_MP.nds.

#68576 - lumothesinner - Wed Jan 25, 2006 8:19 pm

That worked, the global.ini file updated on the larger filesize. the change of background i wanted didnt work but that isnt important, i can live with the purple background.

Hi !

First of all: Great Work, Moonshell !

Now for the Probs:

I converted a complete episode of ENTERPRISE from a PAL-DVD with DPGEnc resulting in a file of 80 MBytes in Size.
When playbacked in Moonshell (I'm using M3-CF) Video freezes at around 15 Minutes, while Audio still goes on.
The only workaround i've found: Pressing UP on Controlpad when the Picture is frozen.
Is this a Bug in Moonshell or am I doing something wrong ?
Anyone found an other way around this ?

Regards

Rudi

1) Genre shows as "?||g?|" for some MP3 files.
2) The file info window stays on-screen after the last file in the directory is played.
3) Setting MusicNext:PowerOFF doesn't work with the lid closed. The DS stays on until the lid is opened.
4) The text viewer's line number still doesn't change when scrolling with the stylus. (Sorry I didn't notice that before.)

Nice work! :-)

The dithering appears when neither reading nor the decipherment is in time.

Thought I'd quote this for those who missed it. Faster flash = better video!

The title bar of text viewer was repaired.
Thank you for the report.
I think about other proposals...

Is the your image thinking "right edge cuts" or "not sorted"?

The problem is actually the letters being rearranged near the right edge. Notice how "Light OC Remix" becomes "Light OC Reix" (missing the M) and "transformation" becomes "transformatioi". (Sorting would be nice, though. ^_^)

Thanks again for making this. The main reason I got a DS was because I knew someone would make a cool program like Moonshell. Really makes you wonder why Nintendo hasn't released an updated media player that uses the DS's power.

Regards

Rudi
It's a known bug :)

Is the freezing-video-bug maybe a 32MB-Boundary-Prob ?

#68707 - Durandle - Thu Jan 26, 2006 1:51 pm

Rudi Rastelli :

I don't see why, the DS isn't using the M3 32mb of memory and the DS only has 4mb. Also its always 15min... even if the file is 15mb or 200mb. hehe also, if you had actually read this forum (only a few pages back) then you'd have seen this brought up a few times.

#68708 - MaHe - Thu Jan 26, 2006 1:55 pm

I've modified Acke's CurveShell skin a bit to work with 9.0 (test versions unconfirmed).

Note! This is NOT a skin of mine! I've only converted it!

I think he means because the maximum addressible size for a GBA ROM is 32MB, without any fancy bankswitching or whatnot. But I don't think that's the issue, since it reads from a flash card.

#68778 - Durandle - Thu Jan 26, 2006 7:31 pm

Yeah, thats why I thought he meant the M3 memory :)

I think the fact its 15min even if the file is small points to a decoder problem than anything else.

I modified it too, and I was about to post it! Weird coincidence...
They're both a bit different from each-other, so don't worry :)
I couldn't manage a perfect curve on the edges that I changed, so there's still room for improvement.

I had a bit of fun with resizing windows (it seems that I'm not the only one who makes almost pointlessly malleable windows), with a nice little progress bar, a perfectly fitting MusicNext selection window, clock at the top, and the music player fitting perfectly inside of the bottom part of the white curve.

Anyways, the link:

Note: I have only edited the Blue scheme.

Have fun!

That fixed one is so cool. Thanks.

For some reason global.ini was not "for all". I personally use EXFS, so MoonShell freezed. After I figured out the setting it started to work.
In my opinion these stuff with make_interface.bat should be in the moonshel package itself (someone needs to make dos command based menu for codepage select). Another solution if that some codes an interface to run these scripts.

make_interface.bat (basic commands)
Code:

@echo off
cd ChangeCodePage
cpxxx.bat 1250 128
copy chgimfs\imfs128kb.nds ..\_BOOT_MP.nds

It says for me (on an M3 CF version):

chkM3SD/chkM3CF/pass
Detected adapter is MPCF (or external CF/SD Memory adapter)

Sounds right. :)

I have also found a small bug, I'm not sure why this is happening.

The MOD file here: http://www.angelfire.com/realm2/zdd2/MoonShl/zerodty.mod

crashes MoonShell now. I think it must be crashing when it tries to get MOD file info since it played fine in all previous MoonShell versions. Can anyone else confirm this crash?

Also, I want to thank MoonLight for adding in IDV3 reading and alphabetic sorting of the file list. Those were the only things I could think of that were missing in MoonShell and I'm very happy about having these features. ^_^

Excuse me Moonshell/Moonlight, I was wondering if you could add a function to dpgenc that allows someone to simply multiplex the gsm audio and mpeg video streams into the dpg container. Encoding the mpeg file then having dpgenc extract the audio as pcm and then reencode to gsm is kind of redundant and time consuming imho. It would be quite useful for those of us that like to use an external mpeg encoder.

-Thanks

#68896 - The 9th Sage - Fri Jan 27, 2006 7:27 am

Hm, I like this turning off the backlight with inactivity, but is there any way you could add a way to turn it off, or at least turn it off during movie viewing only?

I was watching a video and the backlight turned off on me. :)

So on playing movies, inactivity should not shut the backlight off, is what he's saying..

Anyway, I haven't tried the new version. I'm kinda getting excited from everyone being so happy.

MoonLight, it's a shame you do not want donations. I still feel guilty for getting such a great application for free.

I do have a request though. When the cap is shut, shut the screens off completely, don't just shut the backlights off. It would save on more power.

Also, the video game "Daigasso! Band Brothers!" has a feature where if your cap is closed, the music continues playing...But there is no sound out of the speakers. There is sound ONLY if there are headphones connected to the Nintendo DS. Is this feature possible for moonshell? It could be a good feature to have, and would save from embarassment on the bus when I accidentally pull my headphone cord off. :)

The handling of Vietnamese was changed. Local->Unicode changed to UTF8->Unicode. (Untest)

Problems:

IT playback crashes MoonShell

Backlight shutting off way too soon, it's very annoying

SPC timed to 3 minutes default is annoying, too..especially if the SPC files should have proper times. Is there an option in the INI to disable this feature?

EDIT: IT playback is working, only if the IT is not manually loaded from the file list, but automatically loaded through "next song"

Perhaps, the problem that the DPG reproduction stops was corrected. (This problem of stop 12 minutes.)

The DefaultSongLength item was added the SPCPlugin section to global.ini.
When the SPC plug-in became a no sound for one second or more, it was made to judge the stop.

The backlight turning off time is revokable in the BacklightTimeout section of global.ini.
When 0 is specified, it always lights.

Thanks for idea.

After I shutdown DS and started it again MoonShell started directly, weird. G6 has internal menu system that can not be removed. Normally nothing is started directly. After few reboots it fixed and boot to menu.

EDIT: When MoonShell freezes it shuts the backlights and DS starts to blink the green light. Nothing buttons helps.. only reboot.

Just tried the new version, it's great. Only thing that bothered me was having to press Start every time I turn it on, I guess that's just temporary so we can see the text? (My GBAMP CF is detected correctly. :-)) Unfortunately I can no longer scroll in images and text files using the stylus (whether I touch the scrollbar or the actual image/text), which was a very useful feature.

Does that work if you just replace the numbers? You can just replace them with %1, %2 etc, which means to use the value of the first, second etc parameter. Example:
Code:
echo p1=%1 p2=%2

If you name this test.bat, and run "test 4 3", it'll show "p1=4 p2=3". It'd be difficult to make an actual menu with just a batch file, though.

When you use MusicNext:Next, after the last file is done playing, the information window remains and displays an error. This is basically fixed in test5, though, because it just plays the first file again.

You do this by just turning off the amplifier, IIRC. It'd also save more power when the lid is closed, as I doubt many people will have it closed if they're using the main speakers. ;-)

No issues there... file is named correct.

???_???.mp3 (for testing) and it shows " ??_ AO.mp3" with an empty space on the letters ? and ?.

using codepage 1250, tried using 0.9 and 0.9 test 5, making the filed with .bat and moving renaming manually

Same issue, even 0.8 has same issue with ? and ?..

Setup.exe was made.
An environmental setting was read recognizing CF/SD/FlashCart automatically.

Does this work normally?
I looks forward to a lot of reports.

P.S.
Please use MoonShell Ver0.9 (stable version) for the DPG encoder.

Thanks! Having the shell folder on CF is great.

0.9 test 6
Thank you MoonShell.

Setup is working great I think.

EDIT: BUG
276Mbit MoonShell file still freezes at the start:
"The filesystem is retrieved.
This process test to automatic operation detect global.ini for the future."

Nothing happens after that.
I have five 54Mbit video files in files_EXFS folder.

I tested with this video:

Settings are...
256*144 - 1-1 Ration (VGA)
VBR Constant Quality 190-220 (with quality set to 100%)
23.93 (or whatever it is) fps
Audio is 48000hz and 192kbs - seeing as the moonshell encoder is going to encode it again, you dont want to lose quality here.

Ok, my country has letters: ???.
I tested Codepage 1252

Maybe the fonts for these does not exist?
Is the same situation with codepage 1250?

Hi, new version works great for me!
I see a great improvement in playing DPG videos as I don't experience any video-sound desynchronization. Great job!

I was also wondering if you could put some alarm clock option that would play music files at the given time. It would be a great feature!

As for "?" and "?", the upper one line was lacked.
Which character should I move below?

"?"(U+00E5) is not contained in the CP1250 table.
By my limited knowledge. A correct translation table was not found.
Do you know URL of a correct Unicode translation table?

Oddly enough I've seen this problem (last letter dropped from text files) in other programs, even the built-in text viewer on the GBAMP. Txtwriter adds a space to compensate. Perhaps it's a library problem?

Moonshell more than deserves it's own forum. Moonlight and other contributing developers or just users of moonshell may find it easier to search through single threads for help, updates and responses as opposed to sifting through 99 pages of messages.

MoonLight, test06 simply rocks. No more IMFS, yay! :)

BTW, you should rename the "shell" folder to "data/.shell", so we'll have some unified files folder. Please? :D

I just put all of my stuff into a directory called Main and change Moonshell's start dir. I never have to worry about programs that need files on Root again! (Although I do agree, it needs to be standardized).

Pressing R to go to next file now causes Moonshell to crash in the latest test.
Also, the file information window should be able to scroll horizontally.

Nice new features though, again!
(I had a bit of trouble fitting it all into my skin, but I think I've sorted that one out now... it was pretty neat, actually, because I could do all of the changes to global.ini through DSLinux).

About the text file.

Is the language that universally uses UTF-8 only Vietnamese?
Or, does the language of CodePage1200 or more use all UTF-8?

If Cyrillic and Hebrew and etc. use UTF-8, all CodePage1200 or more is abolished, and it switches to UTF-8.

Please teach the environment in your country.

I am having problems running MoonShell that has one big video file (like Avatar_1x05.dpg).
I have made test with release 0.9 and the latest 0.9 test 8.

0.9 works with big files.
0.9 tests broke the support for big files in G6 flash cart. :( Moonlight, can you please fix this?

EDIT: BIG files working again with 0.9 test 9. But I still need to make more test to be sure.

I think a mix of 9pt and 8pt could work..

a-z, A-Z, ???: 9pt
and ???: 8pt

Someone else that have these letters in their alphabet think this could work ?

ok. the alphabet uses 9pt.
What do you think of 0-9 and "!"#$%&'()*+,-./, :;<=>?@[\]^_`~" ?

As for the ideographic script of each language, I am not well informed.
Does "???" or "???" mean only 3 characters?
Please write all the ideographic characters.

#69248 - tieubao - Sun Jan 29, 2006 4:16 pm

??? : 8pt ----> ?-Z is 8pt because in the moonshell , if you use 9pt for it , it only read AAO instead of ??? . It lose circumflex accent .

LOL!

In general, "ideographic script" means logograms such as kanji (examples). In general, to write ideographic characters, you need a pixel size twice what you need for alphabetic characters.

But I'm guessing from context that "ideographic script" was a mistranslation of a phrase that simply means the letters used in each language. As for those, I seem to remember that Chishm's FAT driver supports only ISO-8859-1 ("Latin 1") characters, and those are listed in two Unicode charts: Basic Latin and Latin-1 Supplement. Also available are charts for other scripts represented in the Unicode standard. (Adobe Reader or other PDF viewer software is required.)

Your guess is correct.
I was misunderstanding the ideographic script and the letter. (character=letter?)

I had made a mistake in the size. A standard size is 7pt. A large size is 8pt.

About UTF-8(CP100).
All alphanumeric characters (0x7f or less) are 8pt.
"???" are 8pt.
All other characters are 7pt.

About UTF-8test(CP110).
All characters are 8pt.
It is a test font to request the Unicode number and the size.

Chishm 's FAT driver doesn't treat Unicode in the long filename.
It is a code that I added. There is a possibility in which the mistake is found.

Using the UTF-8(CP100) in MoonShel v0.9 test 9.

In Windows I have NO IDEA what so ever..

EXFS can treat only 32MByte or less.
It depends on the specification of the GBA flash wagon.
The enhancing memory of G6 is not supported. (Perhaps, the latter half of the file cannot be read. )

I guess that I use all UTF-8 by the CP12xx series.
Please try "100/UTF-8".

G6 has flash drive similar to normal USB stick (dongle). Is it possible to use similar method as with M3?

I cannot make filesystems other than IMFS/EXFS.
There might be a corresponding person if the G6 development member discloses information.

The file name is preserved with Unicode usually.
However, EXFS is preserved by a local code page.
I will improve it.

Anyone has this problem? I have 1 file .txt (UTF-8), file size is about 850 KBytes. I can not open, when i press Start it showed that: "malloc LinesCache out of memory" and next line is: "Text LoadError".

So I divided the file into 2 files, 1 file is around 500 KBytes, the other is 350 KB then there is no problem now.

There is a limit of .txt files (UTF-8), isn't it?

Besides, if you can improve this problem: it should go to another line after a space. It will be great.
Code:

Should be like this

There is a size limitation in the text viewer.
It depends on the amount of the memory to convert your language text into Unicode.

The size limitation can be unlimited by synchronous(streaming) reading.
However, I do not make it because it seems that a synchronous reading is very complex and very slow.

#69365 - MoonShell - Mon Jan 30, 2006 9:16 am

The size limitation of the text display was lost.

Strange, here ??? - ??? works fine for filenames (UTF-8(CP100)) but not as text inside textfiles.

Maybe its because you run EXFS and I run it from SD-card..?

Also when i change CP100 to CP110 when running setup file, nothing changed or something changed but i cannot recognize.

That's extremely unlikely, because WMA has a tendency to have DRM embedded in it. Convert them to something without DRM, like mp3 or OGG.

I agree with all of those, except I dont think WMA is possible easily.
Also, Win95 looks better then XP :p
(custom background would be nice though..you just keep it in a folder)

This is a big one, but how about supporting extensions?

You could have a folder called "programs"
Then,
For instance anything with *.nes could open the program "NES_nesds.nds"

Moonshell would simple look at the first leters, and if they matched it would trigger the correct program. (and would be very simple for the user to set up various programs for different extensions).

Of course, this wouldnt load the correct file into the program...it would be upto the creators of NesDS, or such for that.

But I dont see that would be much work for them. You could just leave the route to the file in an standard place in ram, which DS homebrewers could learn to access.
The ram isnt whiped clean automaticaly when you start a .nds file is it?

; ?w???b???L?[?????????????o?b?N???C?g????????????B
; WhenStandby=FileClosed WhenPicture=BMP/Jpeg etc. WhenText=Text WhenSound=NSF/MP3 etc.

WhenStandby=10
WhenPicture=-1
WhenText=-1
WhenSound=10

If:

Code:
WhenPicture=0

Touchscreen not work on PicView.

And if:

Code:
WhenText=0

Touchscreen not work on TextView.

And so on.

Thank you Moonlight! :)

The stopping bug was corrected when moving while reading the stream file.
(IMFS->MPCF and MPCF->GBFS, etc.)

When the backlight time-out is invalidated.
The bug that the touch panel becomes invalid was corrected.

Thank you.
I wish to express my gratitude for advice for the translation engine.

A simultaneous decipherment of the picture and the sound is high demands...?
It is a fault of me who did not consider it at the initial design stage.

As for reading English, I am painful. Writing is more painful.

A lot of topics are very glad.
I'm sorry little answer however.
I can hardly satisfy the demand of Durandle. hahaha.

Anyway, the maximum thanks are done.

Do you want to move the cursor while displaying the text or image?

Method 1.

[System]
FileSelectSubScreen=1
When =1 is changed into =0, it is possible to operate it with the touch panel.

Method 2.

Please move the window, and touch the background.
The button operation mapping changes by the active window.

Can people stop making crazy requests? :P This is one guy in his sparetime making this great software... so getting a load of people saying "Can we have a noise filter" when he has said many times he wont add features to the video encoder and "Can we have WMA" when only a few posts ago he said something like "no". And for those that missed it.... he has said very clearly that he wont/cant add multi file support - ie, load a text file/pictures and listen to music at the same time - doing so would mean a big code change as far as I know.

Your absolutely right of course, we are asking too much.
Moonshell is already by far and away the most usefull portable app on just about any format ever :)

But about text and music...it already does it,effectively.
Theres a little box that gives you the help and such..you can still read, move and scroll that while music or even video is playing.

Thats why I assumed it wouldnt be too much effort to add.
Thinking about it, I guese it would require interface changes to select two files and such. That may be the big code change.

That help and version info is loaded into memory when MoonShell starts. Before MoonShell starts, even.

Allow me to speak about things I know nothing about;

In older versions of MoonShell, I suppose text files are loaded into memory entirely, and depending on the size of the file, that might not leave enough memory to play music at the same time. In the newest version, it seems only a small part of it is in memory and it reads the next parts from the CF/SD as you scroll. This might leave enough memory to play music, but it would be tough to read a text file and music from the CF/SD at the same time.

It's not impossible, but it would be a lot of work.

It is an exactly correct opinion.

ARM9 CPU? It suffices enough.
4MByte Memory? It suffices enough.
CF/SD reading speed? It suffices enough.

Architecture of the entire MoonShell? so bad.
It is very difficult to change a basic design.

#69517 - doxtur - Tue Jan 31, 2006 6:20 am

MoonShell, thanks for your great program!

I have some non-crazy suggestions for TextView:

1.) In header of TextView window - filename (or part of it if filename is too long), % of text like "13,86%" and time like "21:18", updated every scroll or minute.
2.) Possibility to switch off scrollbar or/and header - to read in "real" fullscreen.
3.) Make TextView screen switchable (SELECT?) and turn off the light on second screen.
4.) Tweak controls (maybe like this) :
A/B,Down,ShoulderL,ShoulderR, tap on the touchscreen - Next Page
Up - Previous Page
Left -1% of text position
Right +1% of text position
X/Y Close current file
Select Swap Screen
5.) Next Page should be "real" next page - not minus one line of text like now
6.) SELECT should act like other buttons - with keyrepeat and so on

I hope not, because it looks awesome.

Is it possible to be able to show or hide the Help and About windows while Moonshell is running? I have them hidden (as I prefer my screen as clean as possible) but sometimes I want to be able to show them for a minute, and re-building the .nds file to change the settings is inconvenient.

The only other thing I can think of to ask is to support .m3u playlist files. They're very simple, just plain text lists with some extra info in them. Aside from that, Moonshell does just about everything I'd want it to. :-) (And it's nice to finally have a portable device that can play SPC files. 64KB .spc > 1MB MP3 by a long shot.)

Hello monkey1987.

MoonShell doesn't correspond to G6.
If automatic detection is not wrong.
You can use EXFS.

ClosedSholderButton=1

MoonShell currently does not have in-program configuration.

However,

You can now edit the global.ini with a DS home brewn "Text file editor".. because the Shell directory is now "installed" on the flash card. Restart MoonShell and it should take effect. I don't know how one would do this with a non-CF/SD based card.

doxtur:

When making requests you may want to remember that MoonLight/MoonShell can not read English very well, so using short hand grammar and such will make it very hard for him to read.

Moonshell :

I think you are doing very well with your English. Its not easy understanding another language.

Here is another idea for the shoulder buttons. When the lid is closed.

- hold down L and press R to skip/next song.
- hold down R and press L to pause/play.

Would that be very hard?

When reading text in Moonshell, when you close the text, the current position can be saved to the .ini file. Because Moonshell is not creating a new file, it should be safe. When you open the text again, you can go back to where you were using the .ini

Again, is that very hard?

Run the Setup.exe included in 0.9Finalbeta, to set up the Shell folder on your memory card, if you haven't done that already. Then put the BMP files and skin.ini from skintest2 in there.

I have made another unofficial revision of CurveShell (blue theme only) to fit the now bigger playnext window, and to fit the fileinfo window. A bit of missing text on playcontrol in some cases, but nothing painful. I had to step away a bit from the original concept, but I think it still remains fairly faithful to how it was meant to be.

It is now fully compatible with Moonshell 0.99

#69701 - tssf - Wed Feb 01, 2006 10:21 am

Okay, MoonLight, when you're better, here are some bugs that need to be sorted out:

Old bug: "Random" (now called "Shuffle") needs to ignore music it's already played before, as to not get constant repeating music.

Old bug: "Random" (now called "Shuffle") does not play different file formats. If I play an MP3 and the next file is random, and I have OGGs in the same directory, MoonShell will ignore the OGG files and keep playing MP3s randomly. If I am playing IT files and there is an MP3 in the directory, MoonShell will ignore the MP3 files and keep playing IT files randomly. etc.

New bug: some IT files are crashing MoonShell. Specifically, this one: http://tssf.i-web.net/Remakes/FF7Stuff/FF7DS/ff7ds_sfx_cursor.it

and this one: http://tssf.i-web.net/Remakes/FF7Stuff/FF7DS/ff7ds_sfx_ready.it

IT files also have a break up in the sound. I suspect this is a buffer problem perhaps?

Feature Request: more Zoom Out options on pictures. Full Screen image resizing would be nice. :)

Take a long break before considering these, though. Get over your virus. Being sick is not fun.

it could easly save on a INI file..

or marking the TXT with a special TAG when we Bookmark the text may be a easy way...

a tag we wont see in texts like #BM& or something

Moonshell can easly find it when calculate the line cache, and show it!

or even wirting the Bookmarked line on the end of the text file!

Internaly I guese, as it dosnt seem to make a file on the card...and yet, it seems to be able to save unlimited numbers of bookmarks. (one for each book..)

it could easly save on a INI file..

or marking the TXT with a special TAG when we Bookmark the text may be a easy way...

a tag we wont see in texts like #BM& or something

Moonshell can easly find it when calculate the line cache, and show it!

or even wirting the Bookmarked line on the end of the text file!

I guese its a tag, as I see no *.ini
It would be funny if it turns out to be easy to have a standard bookmark format :p

why don't you set it up more than 10 sec, falcon, just go to file/global . if not alphabetical, then what?

Set the times to "-1" on the global.ini to make the light stay always on.

GragonSon wrote:

It could be by file type or something, or by date.

#69730 - falcon!!! - Wed Feb 01, 2006 4:01 pm

oh , i see. I didnt read that I could make the light always on ^^

Anyway I keep my 0.9 version cause I really dont want file to be sorted alfabetically.

The files aren't sorted at all in the older versions. They're just displayed in the order they're read. Why would you want that?

#69733 - falcon!!! - Wed Feb 01, 2006 4:20 pm

in the previous version files were sorted in the way they were put in on the CF
I mean: like in windows "order by --- last modify"
So if I had these music on CF

1
2
3

and the day after i put "2,5"

i get

1
2
3
2,5

I like this because then I have all the files displayed cronogically.

anyway about this 0.99: are files displayed alphabeticfally or in the order they were viewed on the pc? Because if is it so, i could order the file like i want on the pc and then view them in the same way on Moonshell.

However, a good reason to update from "0.9 get file info test" to "0.99" ?

#69737 - Dudu.exe - Wed Feb 01, 2006 4:35 pm

i organize file tipes in folders.. so dont really need to sort this way..

alphabetical order is a gift from heaven... much more easer to find a music or file you want..

You can set the light turn off time to -1, and it will never turn off. I do that with image and text viewing.

Desktop:

Text reader (the default white text is a bit hard to read so changing it to something darker would be better.... how do you do it again?):

ps. What's the setup.exe for?

#69768 - ?hr - Wed Feb 01, 2006 7:04 pm

its for the language letters(other letters like ??? if a other setup is chosen)

Sorry for being so dumb but I can not use the skin in 0.99.
I tried making EXFS it started but it did not load the skin.
As I was not too interested in the skin I just wanted to change the design so I copied the ColorCoordination back into global.ini. It worked out except for the Window settings they are ignored by MoonShell.

Does anybody have an idea?

Yup, it's really nice, but you've done two little mistakes:

MoonLight, ever since you added playback of non-standard framerates and re-encoding at something other than 24/30fps, MPEG playback has been PERFECT for me. I LOVE it. :)

Re-encoding movies to 15fps = VERY smooth, unnoticable video. I am HAPPY. Thank you. :D

Code:

    case DIMT_SCSD:

works fine on my SCSD with .nds/wmb types without a loader. Probably would work with appended data type ROM too.

I'm not sure what is wrong...

MoonShell 0.99 was working fine for me on my SC SD and SuperPass (v1) until I flashed my DS with FlashMe (v6)...

Now when I run MoonShell I just get a black screen...

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Ah, so that's where this skin came from originally. Thank you for that. I actually never really thought of making a skin for MoonShell until I saw that.

In that case, what do you think of the file info position in this version of it (http://www.angelfire.com/realm2/zdd2/MoonShl/CurveShell_v099.zip)? I was kinda going back and forth on it, but I decided I liked that better than having the larger, 'fat' file info window randomly stuck into the middle of the screen (not so cluttered maybe) since MoonShell's much more accurate with the touch screen now and the scroll bars are much easier to use. Heh, changed my mind overnight apparently about where I placed that window. So if anyone did download it yesterday, it's 'new' and 'improved now. :P

I hope you don't mind about putting that up here. ^_^ I might have asked had I known where it came from in the first place. Btw, if it's of any use to you, feel free to use anything from that zip in your 'official version'.

It is stretched to fullscreen. However, there's no filtering, so anything but 128x96 looks pretty ugly due to oddly stretched pixels. I kinda wish there was a 1:1 (no stretching) mode where the video just has a black border around it.

#69843 - Xtreme - Thu Feb 02, 2006 9:06 am

Moonlight (MoonShell):

The setup.exe only offers EXFS for me. How can I make other roms than EXFS ones?

I would like to test if G6 flashcart works like M3, because it is a real U-Disk and should act like M3.
I can not see why it should not work.

Some information about G6: I can copy any files on G6 with Windows explorer.. just any.. only the space is limited to 512MBytes.

EDIT: Time is here right now 20:25. In Japan it is 03:25.

wrong

../ is a directory entry which points back to the parent directory

that's why you type cd .. & not just ..

i thought that ../ was like BACK in windows, so not a folder. anyway it's not a file xd

Run "cmd" from START menu in Windows and type DIR and press ENTER.
. and .. are listed as a folder.

#69896 - KeitaroBaka - Thu Feb 02, 2006 8:56 pm

Hello

I just downloaded the version 0.99 and I find it great. But one thing is not perfect for me. Now that all config and skin files are external to the NDS file, I can't use moonshell anywhere else than on the root of my SD card. I was used to put all moonshell files in a subfolder and now I can't. It will use the default config. Could this be modified in a near future ? And picture viewing is good, but can there be a feature to see the entire image on the top screen (resized to fit the screen). Of course, a limitation for too big images can be added. Is all that possible ?

Thanks for your attention and hope these features will come out =)

EDIT : And by the way, is it me or sound in DPG files is not as good as it used to be with older versions ?

If you would rather it called them something else, just open the _BOOT_MP.nds file in a hex editor, search for the string "files." and replace it with a six-character string of your choice. For example, replace
Code:
'files.'
with
Code:
' pants'

and it will be reflected in MoonShell.

#69898 - tssf - Thu Feb 02, 2006 9:13 pm

or "items." would work well, too.

for the skins: you have to put the modified bmp with those names and those dimensions, in the shell folder that's on the ROOT directory.

Moonshell is great, no doubt :)
But I confirm what I say, the exact same MP3 (Mozart's Requiem, Dies Irae) encoded in 160 kbps sounds great on my PC, the choir and the strings are well rendered, whereas on my DS the sound (and I'm not some kind of purist, seeking the perfect quality) seems distorted, choir and strings are like mixed together.
I've tested it with the same headphones and there really is a big difference in quality between the two. Test and you'll see (hum hear)!

classic music is horrendous through moonshell, it might be due to the snr on the hardware though and not moonshell's fault

Have you tried using dynamic compression on the classical music before you encode to MP3, so that you can use the full range of the 10-bit (?) DAC in the DS?

It's been a while since I last posted in this. Moonshell not only sounds great, but is also looks fantastic with the skins Moonlight implemented. I shrunk an Armored Core wallpaper for my background and it looks great. Everything plays faster and my MP3s sound even better with v.99 than the last version I was using. Thank you so much for this excellent program, Moonlight. I hope you are feeling better.

I would like to add confirmation to the reports of "ff7ds_sfx_cursor.it" and "ff7ds_sfx_ready.it" causing Moonshell to freeze. The file "zerodty.mod" will not play. I also found that one of my own files will make Moonshell freeze where it did not in versions prior to .9 Test 1:
http://www.umflint.edu/Clubs/fan/SUNDANCE.MOD

Moonshell version .9 was the last version that it worked properly on. Does anyone else get the same results with this file? Thanks.

"loadskin /shell/desktop.bmp" followed by lots of skipped loads from //IMFS/shell/...
and "MediaType:could not find a working IO Interface"

As a side note, in the setup.exe I also put the codepage to japanese but can't seem to display kana or kanji, just blocks... perhaps something is going wrong with the setup.exe program?

#70005 - MechaBouncer - Fri Feb 03, 2006 6:34 pm

There should be English text within the Setup.exe program that give descriptions of what each thing does. Does that text not show up in Linux?

it shows up, and I leave the config file ones checked, i assume that makes it read from the card's /shell dir for each of those items. I set the codepage to use shift-jis, and the box above that is checked as well. Then I hit setup. it tells me to read the readme_EXFS and that setup has completed. Then I run CreateNDSROM_for_EXFS.bat (or rather the equivilant script i made,) copy it to the cart, and run. Then I get the problems I mentioned. Other than not reading the config from /shell, and not displaying japanese text, it seems to work fine.Mp3's work, and english text display fine. I like the new picture zoom as well (last used the 0.8 version.) No bugs or odd behavior I see, just can't seem to get it to load the config off the card. Probably some stupid mistake I'm making... :/

Is EXFS required for SD versions of SuperCard and M3? I thought it was just for dedicated flashcarts. Here is what I did:

1. I first insert my CF card into the reader (SD card should be no different here).
2. It automatically detected it in WindowsXP and assigned it as drive "F:" (I would hope that Linux would do this too).
3. Then I ran Setup.exe and chose it to write to drive "F:" (if your card isn't assigned as a drive letter, try selecting "C:" as this will put the "_BOOT_MP.nds" file at the root of the drive and create the necessary "\shell" folder at "C:\shell\".
4. I left "/shell/global.ini", "/shell/desktop.bmp", and "/shell/startup.mp3" checked as those get copied from the "\SetupData\files\shell\" subfolder from where Setup.exe is running (you can also replace those files with different ones as long as they carry the same names and the desktop.bmp file must be 256x192 and a 256-color indexed palette).
5. Since I didn't need any additional language settings, I just unchecked the box to copy a new one over.
6. I also unchecked the SuperCard option since I have a GBAMP. You might want to make both files and see which works better.
7. Clicking OK wrote everything out to the CF card without a problem.
8. For the skins, I just unzipped one of Moonlight's skins and copied the "skin.ini" file and all of the bitmap files into the "\shell" directory on the CF card.
9. Replaced the CF card in the GBAMP, put it into the DS, started it up, and viola! Skinned Moonshell v.99!

Like I said, I'm not sure how much is applicable to the SuperCard SD or Linux, but I wouldn't think that it would be too far off.

EDIT:
I just got to thinking about something that I would like to make a request for. There are settings to "Hide" the About, Help, and Date/Time windows in the global.ini file, but it's either on or off. What about a "minimized" setting where they can become small icons that can be moved around and be re-opened back to full size again. There are cases where I do want to hide the window, but I want it to come back later. It would be most helpful.

And is writing to the CF/SD card or flashcart planned for Moonshell? Writing settings to the global.ini file from Moonshell would be very useful as well.

Can someone make a new thread for MoonShell skins? Also, when posting a skin, you should post a PNG or something similar as a preview so people can see what it looks like :) Would be much better, imo.

Thanks MechaBouncer, that worked like a charm. I knew I was doing something stupid ^^ Sorry for taking up everyone's time with that, I don't think I fully understood what EXFS was before you explained it.
EXFS wasn't needed, and setting it to output to a drive seemed to make a version which loads the config off the card's /shell dir. It also saved me the trouble of having to run the CreateNDSROM_for_EXFS.bat step.
For what it's worth, Linux sees the card when I put it in the card reader, but wine, which runs the setup.exe program, isn't configured to see it (I generally have no need to use it from windows programs.) I just had it dump the nds files in my home directory and then copied them over, similar to your suggestion.

Hi Moonlight, Moonshell

Does Moonshell support for batch convert? I have a huge collection of movie clips, i want to convert these files to .DPG format.
Now, I have to convert one by one, that take a long time. Can it support batch convert? So that i can leave it convert at night and next morning i just enjoy these clips.

Thank very much for this wonderful homebrew.

Just coding skills needed (no source codes needed).
There can be an interface that chooses settings/files for you and makes dpgenc.exe to encode them and finishes when the OK button appears (pushes automatically it) and starts to encode another one.

Or we can wait if Moonlight will integrate it. It is his decision, not ours.

P.S. I am hoping to see dpgenc.exe that saves the settings to a file dpgenc.ini (does not loose them).

Yes, I have the same problem, sometimes Jpegs dont work even if they are fairly small.

Moonshell, is it possible to include a DPG player for pc? because when finished converting my videos, I want to test their quality before tranfer to my CF

Transfering large video files take lot of time, and sometime those videos turn out very bad. Then I have to delete and convert new ones, waste all the effort.

If it is so hard, then just forget about my idea, thank you for your wonderful app.

#70143 - falcon!!! - Sat Feb 04, 2006 3:57 pm

yes... dpg player would be fine.

Anyway if you want you can try dpeg decoder, which creates one m1v and wav file from the dpg. So you can test the quality from the pc ^^

The method that I'm using (splitting per version and stickying the most recent) is what Pocket Heaven and DDRManiaX do, and it seems to work there. I tend to leave old topics unlocked so that loose ends can be tied up unless the topic is one that would draw IBTL type posts.

I would suggest posting that in the current topic here:
http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=8511&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Also, because it concerns version .999, you might want to wait until a version .999 topic is started. It seems each time a new version comes out, a new topic comes out to go along with it. That topic there is actually for version .992 and all beta versions based on it, but it is still the "current" one.
