Voice chat before and after matches, not during. This is what I wanted! Some way of communicating with your opponents. Post-pwnage trash-talking and friend-code exchange.
YES!

Good that it's not in-game.
When I read your topic title, I was afraid that this would end up like Unreal Tournament often does.
Now... I wonder if the DS's microphone can actually record voices properly...
Kind of a strange picture to have on the left of that article, eh? It's about a year old now! And it doesn't look like that!

Prototype of DS was one of the ugliest things I've ever seen.
BTW, I don't think we'll be able to chat with people OUTSIDE of our Friend Roster.

Nintendo should have something in the MP:H setup that says: "Check this box if you are over [some age like 13 or 18]" to allow people to voice-chat with non-friends. I wish that Nintendo would have a universal online account system like XBL, but keep it free.
The game is rated Teen, so no "young" kids should be playing it anyway.

Bet you the game launchs with a headset ;)

What would be cool is if the game came with an ear piece that has a mic on it, like some cellphone headsets. That would kick ass, and then putting the metroid logo on it and making it look all space-age would be an awesome include-in..
Probably won't happen, though.

They could bundle a Samus suit helmet withit (with built-in mic and speakers).
OMG just imagine how you'd look on the bus wearing a Samus helmet.
Then you just look at the guy next to you and nod slowly....

lmao @ JaJa...seriously, i'd love a Samus helmet tho
yeah, i agree that it'll probably launch with a headset...i really hope its a metroid themed one too

Yes, I recall Nintendo making mention of a headset previously, and there doesn't appear to be one yet, so you're probably right.
Also the fact that the headphone/mic ports on both DS Lite and DS are identical in their arrangement makes that theory very likely.

First one is a headset/mic combo I found on a French product site. Second is an E3 pic showing the headset used for their voice chat demo.

Weird, this headset is already 12 months in the European stores (to be exact: Mueller).

Yes, Mueller stores (available in countries - members of European Union, with some exceptions like UK, I think). It's supposed to be a drug store (err, don't know the right phrase), but on the top floor, there's always a DS section ^_^).
I don't think you can buy these in US, since they're a French product (I think), and besides, they look very crappy. I don't know why did Nintendo complicate with a custom microphone jack <_<

Because some idiots would plug headphones into it, and think their DS's sound isnt working.
#79872 - Mr. Picklesworth - Sun Apr 16, 2006 5:21 pm
Speaking of that mic jack... does it still do the exact same thing as a regular mic jack? (For lack of a better term. I'm sleepy, all right?)
I've always been wondering about attaching a nice microphone to the DS in order to record stuff. Its built in one isn't bad, but I'm sure better sound is quite possible.
It would be convenient if I could just perform a bit of wire surgery between a microphone and a DS headset...

So when will the first home-brew incorporate VOIP??
Cause the whole you gotta talk to only friends kinda blows on metroid.

Over the Internet? Possibly as soon as DHCP, DNS, and TCP are confirmed working so that calls may be placed.
Locally? Possibly as soon as ad-hoc mode works.
Either way, we're waiting on Stephen Stair to make another release.

Mic data can be sampled at 8000 Hz and sent as 8-bit A-law (PAL) or mu-law (NTSC), or it can be compressed with IMA ADPCM. You can get the codec working and then wait for sgstair to figure out ad-hoc mode (for local area connections) or DHCP (for Internet connections).
