That's awesome.

congrat, Moonlight...
I just tried it, it's awsome. The two button R and L now have flexible when DS is closed----> Hold L, press R = Playnext; Hold R, press L = Stop.!!! Cool
I just have two questions: what do Plug-in use for and how to use it?
How do I change background in this new version?

Plug-ins replace everything being embedded in the .nds. The plugin folder goes in the shell folder, and on your card.
You change the background the same way as before; replace the desktop.bmp in the shell folder with another 256x192 8-bit bitmap.

Hey that sounds cool - I'll have to wait until I get home though. I'm glad I suggested the shoulder-buttons thingy idea a while back - not sure if that's where the inspiration came from though.
Great work there Moonlight/Moonshell.

How about have a notification sound for when the battery is running low, then have a window pop up "low battery! shutting down in <insert number> seconds. Click Cancel to stop shutdown"? That'd give a little more warning and allow the shutdown to be canceled if say, someone quickly plugged in an external power sorce?
EDIT: Awesome! General MIDI plugin baby!!! :D

Do you mean that we can make translations for the DPG Encoder ? If that is true, then I will start making one as soon as someone confirms this.
Does the DPG Encoder for version 1.0 even exist? I only can see one for version 0.999.

It seems to have problems with jpg files...somtimes it wont open them at all (i will just crash...No buttons will give a response)...or..I can open a couple then it crashes. It seems to not have this problem with any other type of file.
Other than that it's great. The jpg thing is sort of weird though....

Currently only MIDI format 0 is supported. I also noticed that pitchbending doesn't work (instead nothing happens besides the song slows down while an unsupported midi command is given). But it's still the first homebrew DS program being able to play general midi at all, so kudos for that!

I think there are 2 types of JPEG. The NORMAL one and the JPEG 2000. I think Moonshell just can open the NORMAL type. Moonshell CANNOT open JPEG 2000.
Am I correct?

I can confirm that.
It crashes when trying to open my Baseline Standard JPGs saved through Adobe Photoshop. They ran in all previous versions of Moonshell.
Other than that it runs fine, as always. I told you that you could write a plugin system, Moonlight! That's probably a first for handheld game console homebrew :)
I'm trying to get the source code to be compileable with Linux, but there's a bunch of filename case inconsistencies :(
Does anyone know of a program which could fix this, or should I write it myself?

I just tested 1.0fb with video and omg, the annoying dots are back! Why, why, why. Also the video quality (with 24fps, 256kbit) is worse than with earlier versions. Very pixelated. :( *test2nocnt had better quality*
It does say it's v1.0. The temperature should say like "25.0 C", but it says only "25.0"??? Is this happening only in my DS or is it a bug?
Audio is almost in sync, cool! :)

Some problems with the new MIDI plugin:
-Consistent tempo does not exist. It gets very slow with a lot of audio channels being played. This is being software processed right? Perhaps it would work better to limit voices to 24 if it is possible, or to write a hardware driver and software process 2 voices per channel.
-No midi controllers are supported yet, hopefully this will change. :) The options I want the most are:
Modulation (1)
Main Volume (7)
Panning (10)
Expression (11)
Sustain Pedal (64)
Pitch Bend Wheel
RPN and NRPN are a must (for pitch bend sensitivity)
That's it. Nothing else needs to be supported, mostly because the DS hardware wouldn't be able to handle it.
-There's no kick drum in the drum kits yet.
MoonLight, is it possible to change the instruments? I would love to provide you with a very good sounding instrument bank for use in the plugin. :) What format do the instruments use?

Smidf0.msp is a plug-in sample that presents the use of the enhancing binary(.bin).
The MSP format is a very simple format that specializes in the decipherment.
I am sincerely wishing a wonderful plug-in that cancels dissatisfaction.
example. MIDI player corresponding to format1, ogg and mod without memory leaks, Accurate and high-speed Jpeg decoder, BMP loader corresponding to RLE, etc, etc...

I was just wondering what the deal is with the skin preview maker...with the message saying please use media which can be damaged (the only CF card i have that i don't particlarly care about wont even work with my GBA MP...). I have a skin I made that i'd like to share, but it would be nice to have a preview. Just kind of wondering what the deal with it all is.
EDIT: Also...no matter what I do...I can't get the date/time box to appear in the bottom left corner...i mess with the chords along with my skin..but...it never changes.

x=-1
y=-1
w=-1
h=-1
EDIT2: Concerning the Jpg reading problems...
I tried it out some more. It is working perfectly with png, bmp, etc...but with jpg files, it either just crashes or it takes a very long time to load (this rarely happens.). I also at one time got a read header error..sorry, I diden't write it down.
Anyways, I tried this with a bunch of jpg files along side pictures of differnt formats, and there is deffinately a problem with jpg files in this version of moonshell.

It maybe down to your encoding settings, what are you using for size, bitrate, etc...
This is a very solid release for Moonshell, but there's still some sync issues with audio/video in DPG. If the last few errors are cleaned up Id be very happy to have this as the final release. I may even write a MPEG4 decoder plugin based on Theora or something... seems pretty light weight, although it does rely on SDL for display, audio and threading.

I believe, at least to some degree, the midi slowdown problems are because of lot of consecutive midi events taking in place, not sure if it's just any event or the currently unsupported ones - but you can easily hear where there should be a pitchbend, instead you get a straight note accompanied with tempo slowing down.
I'll take a closer look at the midi plugin during the rest of this week, let's see if I can make it any better...

I have tried setting these 2 values to 0 in the global.ini but I still get the horrible dots all over my DPG files. They playback great on 0.999, which I understand to be due to frames being dropped when the CPU can't cope. Is there any reason why 1.0 is not dropping frames?

You could try deleting your whole shell folder on your Flash card and putting a fresh copy on, then changing the settings.
If that doesn't work, say what settings you use when encoding, its possible one of the options your using is way off.

Thanks, I tried a new shell folder, no good. Here's the settings I used in DPGEnc:
PCM Rate: 32000 Bitrate: 112
use ffmpeg.exe Faster method.
Screen width: 256
Aspect ratio: 4:3
Bitrate: 256
Frames: 18
Brightness: 100
Light: 95
Is the bitrate too high? Playing the same 22 minute file on 0.999 looks great but the sound drifts out of sync as time goes on :-/
Edit: After reducing the bitrate right down to 160 and fps to 14, the dithering effect is almost gone but this is now the same problem we had before frameskipping came in. How come frameskipping isn't working in this release (at least for me) and why am i still seeing the dots on high-motion scenes? If the dots were due to dithering, setting dithering=0 in global.ini should stop them, no?

I set dithering=0 and GOPskip=1. The video is more pixelated than with test2nocnt. Has anyone noticed.. I think I'm the only one who can see pixelation. :D I would take pics of these two versions, but now I am too lazy to do it. Moonlight just few post ago said that nothing has changed since test2nocnt, but something has to be. I have no idea what is causing this then.
EDIT: I am wrong. No more pixelation than with test2nocnt.

Now that we are using MP2 it maybe needing to read more data from the flash card. A bottle-neck in the player can be the speed of access on the flash card. For example, a movie that plays great on my M3 CF (which is very fast) may play really badly on another type of card, which is slower.
As for the pixelation, what is the source aspect ratio, are you outputting at width=256. And, you may want to delete the saved settings for DPGEnc, mine got broken a few versions ago as features got changed and it tried to output a movie at width=32000 0_0

I am testing with max quality/fps settings and the video is full screen. I have fresh MoonShell files. I will start making some tests after few minutes.
0.999 test2nocnt vs. 1.0 finalbeta
EDIT: test made... Now I have to admit that I cannot reproduce the unpixelation with test2nocnt. I must have mixed some other version with it.. *starts to do more tests*

Yes. I just tested with 16:9 video and there are more data for the video, so the quality is better.
DS screen is so small so videos can be pan scanned.. still good quality. One thing was that video had slowdowns at the end (maybe because of fragmented flashcard?).

This is what I don't get though. I have encoded an episode of 24 at 4:3 aspect ratio, highest resolution/frame rate/bitrate possible and it looks great on Moonshell 0.999 - it must be dropping frames a bit and dithering must be off but it still looks excellent, no nasty dots anywhere. Trouble is, on 0.999 the audio is way out of sync :(
If I play the same file with 1.0 (even with dithering=0 in global.ini) it looks awful - dots everywhere and keeps hanging. Audio is in sync though (when you can see whats going on)

Also, I'm just making sure that the problem(s) with JPG images is known... is it?

Woot!
Things I like about this version:
-Plugins! :D
-The Flexible shoulder buttons option
-Pressing Next doesn't skip other file formats. Playback moves between MP3s and SPCs just fine. Finally I can free up some space by removing MP3s in favour of the SPCs they're made from.
Things I don't like:
-No option to use a 12-hour clock.
-Can't view images on top screen, in full-screen mode, like you can with movies.
Bugs:
-Crashed when I loaded a JPEG! Also took unusually long to decode. The message 'BitStream HuffmanDecodeError' is repeated in the debug log a lot, and I get an image that's just one solid colour. Zooming in or out or scrolling eventually crashes with junk on the screen. File info looks normal.
-Top screen still blanks out when viewing images.
And of course thanks again.

Would anyone like to explain how this plugin system works?
Is Moonshell processing an actual compiled program in real time?
It's quite an amazing system, anyway...
Just so you know, I'm watching a Star Trek film (which I own on VHS but it's old and decrepit) in Moonshell and it's working brilliantly! About an hour in there are no errors. I'm going to try reencoding it to improve the frame rate and image quality though...

Yes, that is the case with 1.0. It has better sync and works better with lower quality (the cost of the synchronization).
When I was testing with best quality/fps setting it did drop frames after every ~1-2minutes.
There must be something wrong, you set dithering=0 and it does not work. I have tested it with fresh version of MoonShell and it works (make sure you aren't using an old ini global.file).

#73287 - Durandle - Fri Feb 24, 2006 11:15 am
If I were to guess as to why it looks so bad, I'd have to say that when it skips a GOP (which is how it syncs when dithering is off) then the frame can get corrupt (as MPEG uses data that proceeds a frame to render the current frame, so when you skip a load of data, the current frame can look horrible). If the video is too high quality then it will skip all the time, making lots of these nasty frames. In 0.999 it didn't skip, but also didn't sync.
This is where the dithering has the advantage... it doesn't miss frames, so you dont get the same problem. Instead you get the fuzzy frames when there is lots of action.
I can only say that making the bitrate/framerate lower is the only real way to fix this. I suppose encoding in VBR maybe better, I've not tested it - I need to find an encoder that support encoding to 20 fps and VBR. Anyone have an idea if Mencoder can encode in VBR? Can't find the option my self.
Moonshell :
An idea for keeping sync. Set the dithering to light and combine it with GOP skip. The combination should work well. Heavy dithering looks really bad, so instead, use the skip. Would this work?

Okay, Moonshell can last playing videos for at least and hour and 30 minutes.
The video was 128 kb/s with 256x128 resolution and 24fps, and it ran beautifully!
However, there seemed to be a constant half-second delay in the sound :(
I'm not sure if this delay was caused by the encoder, me skipping to about a quarter through the film, or simply Moonshell playing it wrong...

Very Nice, although the pitch bend can be slightly more accurate with pitch bend sensitive-based songs.
Check these out:
http://tssf.i-web.net/Remakes/FF6Stuff/GRANDM.MID
http://tssf.i-web.net/Remakes/FF6Stuff/ff3bbos.mid
It seems the algorythm is off just slightly in some notes (that are being pitch bent, in the middle of one long real midi note). Maybe that's Timidity's fault though?
Also, no offence to the author of the plugin/Timidity, but I seriously hate that isntrument bank. I was wondering if I could provide a better GM one? Since MoonShell can only play one file at a time, it wouldn't matter if the sample library were over 1 megabyte right?
What's the sample library's format anyway? I assume it's GUS Patches (OLD) or does it support a dumbed-down SF2 format?

Actually the sound in my videos are too quiet. I even turn the DS volume to the highest level and also the MoonShell volume, but it is still too quiet.
I can make it louder manually (with other video/audio tools), but I would like to see DPG Encoder doing it (normalizing) internally. :)
EDIT: I just noticed that I can set more than 100% for volume in MoonShell. I have tought that 100% is the max for video. *lol* Not for MP2 audio.

Go to your Moonshell folder (on your PC) and go to the 'files_EXFS' folder, then copy the shell folder to the root of your card.

I have many pictures. These pictures have large dimension. When I see these picture can I lock the zoom ratio or not? I have to change the zoom ratio for every picture, it takes much time.
If Moonshell have a auto fit to screen function, that will be great.
Thanks.

Even better would be to draw the image zoomed out on one screen and zoomed in on the other.

Nuja:
Moonshell seems able to handle feature-length films at 24 FPS, 256x128 resolution, and 192 kb/s video bitrate.
That may be because of the speed of my CF card, though. (It's 40x).
It's probably best to just play around and figure out what suits you best. You should keep the framerate the same as on the original video, if possible. Also, if you're aiming for quality, it's a good idea to get the highest screen resolution possible.
