DS Misc > A way to get DS -- Build it yourself!!!

#74849 - ultrablade - Wed Mar 08, 2006 3:44 am

Want to build your own DS instead or buying a factory one?

Go ahead.

Instrutions:

1. Go and buy a DS motherboard. One can be purchased here for $30 USD.

2. Now that you have the motherboard I assume, you need to buy a shell. All parts are included. (Buttons, top&bottom shell)

A shell can be purchased here

3. Hence I told you to go grab 1&2, you can now get the wi-fi antennda and speakers. (They run together)

Here and here.

You need three more items now. (hey, buy an SP battery and cut the two little plastic peices off top. I did it.. 50 cents cheaper lol)

4. You'll now need a top LCD, a touch LCD, and a battery. Find them all here!

YOU'RE DONE!

Now I'm tell you like this. I'm dead serious you can do this but DON'T attempt if you don't know alot about electronics are in doubt. And if you want instructions, look at Lik-Sang's tech pics. Tell tell you everything you need to know.

(I am probably going to do this for the DS lite...)

TOTAL MONEY: 30.00+70.00+20.00+12.00+4.00=136.00 USD + TAX

I'll tell you this. Look around. You'll find these part waaaay cheaper than off of ebay though.

If futher instructions, ask someone around, like me.

You know where those eBay people get these replacement parts? They disassemble brand new DSes (and the occasional used one, probably) and sell them for parts.

Notice how the most thought-after parts are the most expensive? Smart, eh?

The sum of all parts is greater than what they pay for the DS, since they naturally want to make some profit. I can see how you might combine cheapest parts from different "businessmen" to try building a DS cheaper than buying a new DS, but shipping costs really kill that idea.

Additionally, I don't think "the man" likes them doing that stuff. Go figure :)

Good luck!

If you play this video in reverse, you might assamble a DS!

Just make sure you grab Paco, Jos? or Juan to help you with the video, because its in spanish*

Ehm I doubt your math skills ultrablade because as I went throug I came to this result not understanding your result at all

Code:

                 Xbox Repair   Ebay Guy   Cheapest
                    Guide
Logic Board         29,95       30,00      29,95
Wifi Antenna         4,95       12,00       4,95
Top Screen          49,95       47,00      47,00
Bottom Screen       49,95       70,00      49,95
Touch Screen        29,95        0          0
Case                29,95        0,99       0,99
Buttons              9,95        9,95       9,95
Speakers             4,95        3,00       3,00
Battery              4,95       11,00       4,95

without shipping   214,55      183,94     150,74
or tax

I think 150$ is quite expensive and if you think of shipping and tax I bet you will end up at 200$ so I dont think that if somebody likes building things he might buy a DS take it apart and screw it together again, as this is much cheaper :)

I ended up bricking my DS, so I simply bought a new motherboard off of ebay.. (I don't think it was off of him..) and after a bit of trouble my DS works fine now :D. So a tip for everyone with a bricked DS... get a new mobo from ebay :)

#74896 - adrian783 - Wed Mar 08, 2006 4:44 pm

just as an advice, dont get the ebay replacement shells if they are not OEM. the made in china cases use cheapass screws and cheapass plastic, it just feels weird

#74917 - tssf - Wed Mar 08, 2006 8:39 pm

This seems kinda useless when a used DS would suffice, but then again, how many people can say, "I built my own DS from the ground up?"

This is actually pretty good for customizing the DS if you wanted to...

The DS speakers in the way they're shaped, are proprietary, I would think.

Though if someone wouldn't mind getting into dirty soldering and maybe case modification, someone could put better speakers in the DS..of course, it would require much work. The Shell of the DS is also not designed to accomodate anything of the sort either, which means: More fun trying to figure out how one would replace the speakers as well. It probably wouldn't sound right, either. But it would be nice to put my creative lab portable speakers into my DS..not gonna happen, though. Well, not soon, anyway.

Is it possible to grab Lite's motherboard & shell and keep everything else from the old DS (I can use FlashME and don't really care about the screen brightness)? Or are there any differences in battery size/screen thickness/connector pins/wifi antenna/blah blah ... ?

#74931 - swimgod - Wed Mar 08, 2006 10:58 pm

lol,
the size of the whole ds in the lite is smaller.

i would think nothing would fit...
Maybe the speakers and screens
but nothing else...

Ask the guy who made the VCSp and the first PSp. Another tip: Running the process in reverse would allow making a TV-out-capable DS.

Read each line. Cheapest is the smaller of eBay price and Xbox Repair Guide price.

Yes, maybe you could customize a Nintendo DS unit with this. I think if you replaced the speakers in a normal unit, you would need to have speakers of the correct size, impedance, magnetic field strength, etc. If you build it yourself, you could put different speakers. You could also omit parts you don't need, add a CF card slot, add a debug button, add a serial port, add a RAM expansion slot, etc. And if you don't like the placement of the buttons you can move them.

Well, his work is actually making a home console portable, so that's not really the point of say, making your own customized DS. But I see what you're saying.

Slightly off topic now, I hope Darkfader succeeds in releasing schematics for a "TV-enabled" DS, I really would love something like that released to public so people can actually do this kinda stuff without, say, being a member of the gaming press, or an employee of Nintendo to be able to obtain something of that sort.

Maybe you can un-Heck it, and turn your handheld into a non-portable household console?

That's what tepples suggested.

It would be nice, but which controller interface would you allow for? Maybe a custom SNES-style one with the touch screen appended to the top. Of course that would make connection to the console difficult, you'd have to include more pins.

I might suggest replicating only one screen to the TV (switchable) and still having both screens display on the DS. This would let me play, say, Mario Kart while staring at the TV, or tape-record Meteos.

You should talk about video out in the topic here: http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=8846

Mainly, DarkFader needs some "encouragement" to finish it, if you know what I mean :)

I am going to order one tomorrow lol
