DS Misc > What do I need to know about opening my DS?

#77103 - HyperHacker - Tue Mar 28, 2006 7:43 am

I'm gonna open it up and see if I can get the L button to work again (-_-), anything I should know?

You should know that Nintendo has a great Warranty Repair Service that is probably voided if you open it up and break anything else? ;-P

I hope you have a tri-wing screwdriver handy! Good luck! =)

I second that. They even cross-ship.

I've found the small flathead screwdriver on some models of Leatherman multitool fit the tri-wing perfectly, and is -just- strong enough that if you torque it right, you can loosen the screws without snapping the tip.

Not that I recommend this or anything, since if you torque it wrong, it snaps, and then you have a chunk of stainless steel in your screw.

Whoops.

Main problem is that Ninty, in their infintite wisdom, reflash your DS.
So if you haven't got a Passme 2 and a device capable of using it you stuffed when you get it back.

I sent mine in to Ninty for a hinge and stuck pixel repair in November of 2005. I got back the same DS with the same firmware. (V1)

My warranty expired in December. :-( I guess if I can't fix it, I might just send it to them, but I wouldn't doubt they'd reflash it. If they did, then the cost of the repair, a PassMe2 and a flash cart (I have GBAMP) would probably outweigh the cost of buying an old-firmware DS on eBay.

Ouch.

I'm right there with you, though. In that case, I can't think of a good reason not to open it up! I probably would if mine broke. Besides, even if you did send it in, the non-warranty repair is $75 regardless of what you do to it! >=D

Anyway, I would guess that as long as you're pretty careful, and don't have any accidents (I know you've probably already seen tssf's thread, here) you'll be okay?

Good luck again!

Hey, there's a thought. I should like have it painted or something while I'm in there. But how much does that cost? :-/

HEY my DS works and it's got a cool new shell.. ;)

You can't say you haven't thought about ripping your DS apart, especially if you can't get something to work with it. :D

One thing you should make sure to do, if you have to get a new DS, is transfer your Wifi Connection Settings to it, one way or another, if you play the Nintendo WFC games.

That won't be a problem. Where can I buy one of those screwdrivers for a good price in Canada, though? I was hoping to fudge it with a small Standard like I did for the battery compartment, but that doesn't seem to be working.

You can't buy it in any hardware stores, your best bet is to order it from eBay, and hope someone's got it cheap.

I noticed. >_< I found a smaller Standard though, and I think it's turning... can't tell for sure.
