The maximum volume is set the way it is because of power consumption issues and hearing safety regulations. What are you trying to do with the DS that needs more volume?
EDIT: Slashdot is running a Reuters article about a handheld music player's volume output. Apple got sued about the excessive maximum volume output from its iPod nano and iPod 5 products.

I would agree that the DS could use some amplification. Though I really don't think a hardware mod will do it.
Do headphone battery-operated amplifiers exist?

actually it would be good if I could get something that goes into the headphone socket and has a loud speaker but I want it to be small. Very small. Do you know of any small loud speaker?

Why does it need to be small but powerful? What are you trying to do? We probably won't be able to help you much until you tell us more about the end application.

And the other people around you are probably very glad for it :)
Just get some ipod-style earbud headphones.

I always thought the DS was actually pretty loud.

u should go get some sony MDR-J10 headphones. Great sound quality, good base, really loud. They run as low as $8.

DS is certainly loud enough for me.
Its true you cant here it in noisy areas like trains and such, but that's not a loudness issue, that mores to do with the ambient noise of the surrounding area overwealming your ears.
Good headphones is whats needed really.
Incidently, does such a thing as wireless earphones exist?
Always thought they would be perfect for listening to the DS on the go, but I have a hard time finding anything suitable.

I have seen wireless headphones for the GBA SP that plug into the SP's EXT 2 port. That would work on the DS.

headphones won't fit in my ear sadly. My ear doesnt have the bit that holds the headphone. If I just put it in, it just comes out.

I personallyw ant a little hub that will plug into the DS's output, then have it's own headphone jack, uses a battery, and has a little volume roller. A tiny, portable headphone amplifier, in other words.

Something like this, only that can actually amplify.

They cost alot!
I want something even smaller then that but is a loud speaker instead of a remote control.

RVK, that is KINDA what i'm talking about, but I'm not paying over 30 bucks for something that increases the volume by twice. It's not worth it.

1. Cheap
2. Compact
3. Loud
Pick two.
Why not just use a pair of headphones, most people around you in a public setting will not likely appreciate you playing a game very loudly.
I am not sure of your intent for having a small loud sound system, but here is something that might work for you.

You know...this reminds me of those 3rd Party speaker attatchments for the original GB (I mean the toaster sized one) that made the sound stupidly loud, to where if you wanted you could out power anything else in the room. :)

Nice find, but I need something even smaller, I dont care whats the maximum output and quality as long it is more loader then the ds's internal speakers.
