It was obvious he would make 1.2 with those new improvements. I wonder what means "the end" since he has said it again in his blog (google translated.. maybe I misunderstood something.. i dunno). I hope Moonlight will continue developing MoonShell to more stable and improve video playback to play smoother. Moonshell is the best media player on Nintendo handheld so far.
Version 1.2 beta release notes:
- NDSLiteDefaultBrightness (4=AutoDetect) item was added to [System] section of global.ini.

Working perfectly except for the fact that video playback performance has dropped dramatically. I'll keep using v1.1 until that is fixed.

You mean video slow downs?
Have you changed any setting to see if there is any difference?

When will we see a drawing plug-in for moonshell ( app like darkstar built in to moonshell and text editor??? or will we ever???
Please do not reply "you will have to make one yourself"
just a "no" or "maybe some day" ;)

It's unlikely to happen for a while (or ever), since a drawing plugin for Moonshell would require significant additions to Moonshell's plugin system.
For one thing, it would need to be able to boot plugins at any time just like it boots anything else.
I'm also unsure as to what kind of control the plugins have over windows, and how they deal with user input... a good drawing app in Moonshell would probably want to create two seperate windows for itself, and would need some pretty interesting UI stuff which Moonshell currently doesn't do.
I'm willing to be surprised, though :)

Ok I tested it with video clip that played great with v0.999. It has horrible slow downs (not good). MoonShell says it's version 1.13, should it say 1.2.. instead?
Clock plugin keeps the backlight on all the time.. should it shade out and in after a while? Like 2 minutes on... 2 minutes off... etc to save the backlight. Or just shut off the backlight if no buttons are pressed for 10 minutes.

What I can say v1.11 played that same video clip without slow downs that had problems with v1.13 (beta 1.2).
It seems none of use has the courage to name one release. Also it makes difference what settings you use and what was the source file's fps.
I have come to the conclusion that one release works great for one and other complains. So what can I say.
I will make hard testing with M3 MiniSD 80x (~12MByte/s) when/if I can get one. I also have G6 flash, so I can compare if the playback is different with different medias.
Edit: typo *god I hate those*

I'm curious about midi support.
I've been trying to get the M3 to play midis for quite a damn while, and now that it can, it doesnt play them correctly.
I downloaded my midis from vgmusic.com, look on zelda 64, mario bros, samus and several other games to check what sort of midis i've been hearing.
With that out of the way, is there any program without limitations that will let me turn midis into wav or mp3?

Just use freeware version of Winamp. It's very easy to output wav or mp3 file (it doesn't matter how many there are, it's just so easy to output as many mp3 files as you like).

What about VLC media player? Or what about Windows Media Player with the proper filters installed (e.g. Illiminable for Ogg Vorbis)?

It seems to be able to play just about anything, and get the sound-sycned correctly on things that dont normaly work.
Its by far the best player on the net imo.
Region Free DVD playing without messing with firmware is a bonus too.

VLC and Media Player don't play MOD, SPC, and any other file formats that would require a custom plugin, do they?

"Media Player" is a generic term. Call it Windows Media Player or WiMP. Compared to other media players, WiMP comes with few codecs, but a lot of codecs (called "DirectShow filters") are available for download at no charge on the Internet.
VLC media player comes with lots of plug-ins, including one based on ModPlug Player for MOD/S3M/XM/IT, but not one for SPC (Super NES audio rips).

Wasn't 1.0 supposed to be the end for MoonShell.. perhaps people are misunderstanding the term. It IS a bad translation. Perhaps "The End" means that the current version is complete, and v1.3 will be the next revision.

I think he decided to stop developing it, but as he likes DS so much as a dev system and also knowing that MoonShell is more and more popular (people just love it) he continued to make the MoonShell more complete.
Moonlight personally told me that MoonShell is "imperfect" while the latest release was version 1.0.

I think that's probably at least partly it, he seems like something of a perfectionist, which is probably why MoonShell keeps getting tons of neat features even after the 1.0 release. ^_^

One feature I would love to see is being able to edit the text with the text viewer (like in DSOrganize). Also the way it views text needs a lot of work. Usually it's a mess and is very difficult to read. If you look at the way DSOrganize views text files, it's A LOT better. I wish he would fix this basic feature before going on to these other IMO not so needed ones. The ability to create and use playlists for the mp3 player would be a pretty basic feature that would be nice to have too.

The dude who makes DSOrganize was planning on making DSOrganize as MoonShell plug-in but I am afraid he have dropped that plan. I hope it will come as plug-in later. Is DSOrganize open source?

I'm having problems with dpgenc.exe.
When I run it and select a file, a window comes up saying "nDs-mPeG encoder / dpgenc option", but there's nothing on it -- just a title bar.
Below the title bar is a gray area (a blank window). Why aren't there any command buttons, labels, etc.?

I already have that, and placing it in any of the DPGenc directories didn't do anything. :\
Edit: To clarify, what I mean is I already have the DLL file in my Windows/System directory, and I tried putting it in various other places out of desperation. Nothing worked.

1: It sometimes crashes when opening and closing video files.
2: After playing a lot of midi files in a row, all file types stop working, with the error Quote: |
[file type].MSP file read error.
fopen Error:Already Opened. |
NDS files don't work when this happens either, and when I try to load one (on my GBAMP), it says Quote: |
GetFileCluser return=0 broken FAT? |
and gives me the "Not support adapter" error.
3: Pressing the A button while music is playing does the same thing as pressing R, so it's no longer possible to traverse directories while music is playing, nor change to another specific song without stopping the current one. I don't know if this is a bug. If it's not, I liked it the way it was before.
Aside from these bugs, I absolutely love this version.

It has happened to me several times. I have made 30MByte file for my flashcart. The video file has been the biggest size that has fitted to that space. I think moonshell have bugged opening/closing files for me since 1.0. I think it also happended few times with version 0.999.
I have not tested version 1.2 betas to see if the problem exists. I will do some tests soon.

For me, it happens on my GBA MP and Supercard CF, with videos of all sizes. It seems random.
Edit: And it never happened to me before Beta7, at least not nearly so frequently.
Edit: Ah! Crashes on starting a video seem to be caused by opening one with GSM audio, and then one with MP2 audio. Crashes on closing a video happen when I open a DPG with MP2 audio, then one with GSM audio and then try to close it. Interesting!

1.2 final beta2 (with M3 miniSD)
It says it's using MPCF.
Works almost okay:
1) If I go up one file directory to the filesystem list, remove miniSD card, put it back, and I select MPCF, it only shows 0 files. Bummer! Bug in M3 firmware or in MoonShell?
2) If I take the card out and put it back, MoonShell hangs. Same as with 1).

It booted my DS and did the same and the same result.
Also other videos plays poorly. Too much delays that didn't happend with the older versions. Audio playback seems to be good.
EDIT: link removed, file not anymore hosted. Stargate used GSM audio, GSM audio support is disabled from v1.2 by default to prevent unstable playback.

This happens with M3 CF as well...I think it's probably normal behaviour.

Of course the application hangs when you remove the CF card, since the card is the ROM that the application is running from the CPU's of the DS can not read the next instruction , and the system just sits there looking pretty...

So if I run MoonShell.. don't push any buttons and wait for (for example) a clock to appear on the top screen.. then I remove the SD card and put it back immediately, it hangs.. this is normal? So does the SuperCard SD have this issue?

OK I'm talking bollocks...
I've just tried this with my gbamp + moonshell.
Loaded up Moonshell, waited for screen to clear, removed card, clock was still running... reinserted card, still running, infact I'm playing a song from it now...
Second ran moonshell, then the submarine tech demo removed card, played the tech demo (and got 100% with the usual 40% damage) then re-inserted the gbamp....
Now that's with a GBAMP CF and a flashed DS...
Before I flashed the DS I could have sworn removing the cart caused the DS to hang...

Removing my GBA MP has always worked fine for me. You can't load .nds files after you reinsert, though.
With my Supercard CF on the other hand, it does freeze when I remove the SC, and if I remove the CF and put it back it, it won't load anything.

I thought .nds files such as MoonShell loaded entirely into RAM first.

Yes, unless (I think) you're using a flash cart. The official firmware hangs if you pull the cart out though.
[edit]
I managed to find a few bugs in Moonshell:
-Large images are not rendered completely, and can freeze the program. It doesn't respond or redraw. Older versions turned the backlight off and didn't show any windows; this one keeps it on with the Decode window shown. It fails with images that worked before.
-Occasionally it misreads file extensions, saying it doesn't support 'ext.' or 'ext.?', even with supported extensions. This seems to depend on name/path:
//MPCF/DSOrganize/SCRIBBLE/jesus.png shows 'ext.?', and
//MPCF/DSOrganize/HELP/error.html shows 'ext.'.
Also, I figured out that 'file names garbled at right' bug: it's skipping letters that don't fit. For example, "Remix" might show up as "Reix" because the 'm' won't fit in the remaining space. (It should just stop printing entirely.)
Another thing, when I ran the setup app for this version, it didn't actually copy a lot of the files. Just created the .nds. Or did it ever do that?
BTW, loving that new small font in the debug output.
Also, here's part of a modified skin.ini (the rest isn't modified). I made it right on the DS using DSOrganize, and it's pixel-perfect. It fits all the windows except Help onto the screen at once. Now if you were to put clever background images on each window, it'd look awesome. (Or can you only have one image for all windows?)

Can anyone remember what was the latest version that played Stargate_SG1_S09E01.dpg without delays? When dithering is turned off.
I hate dithering.. it makes the screen look awful.
Audio (MP3) playback with Equalizer would be great!
Especially when you use external speakers like me. I could send some pics of my mini speakers (iPOD/DS Lite stylish) when I get back to home. They are 0.8W RMS (it's not much, but way more than in those DS's internal speakers) and powered with internal 3xAAA accu batteries. Rechargeable via USB port or with any other compatible power source.

It isn't closing the FAT library when you go out of the MPCF (FAT device) file system and reopenning it when you go back in. Simple fix? Don't pull out the card.

Does a file system have to be unmounted before being removed, or can it just be synced? And what's the best way to be notified on cartridge eject/insert so that MoonShell can unmount/remount the file system?

Unmounting is only crucial if you wish to remount. When you close a file, it's contents are synced to disc and all buffers are flushed, so there isn't a risk of data loss. However, when you unmount, all files and the hardware interface are closed. If you don't unmount, it can't reopen the hardware interface and you won't be able to remount.
There is currently no way to be notified of a cartridge removal, asside from using cartridge interrupts. However, once that happens it is too late to unmount.

If unmounting is not compatible with surprise removal of media, then why can I just pull a floppy disk (which uses the same FAT file system) out of my PC without having to drag it to the Recycle Bin first?
Can't the GBA/DS's side of the hardware interface be reset in the absence of the CF adapter itself? When the user yanks the adapter, it loses power, and its side of the hardware interface is reset as soon as it regains power.

Stupid question, but could there be a command sent via software to unmount the library/file system? Then another command to remount it? Sort of like how Windows has the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" wizard, but mandatory? That way, Moonshell stays in the DS's memory, unmounts the file system via a command from the user. The user then removes card, inserts new one, and gives Moonshell a command to remount the system. Then Moonshell pretty much restarts itself and remounts the file system.
Although, thinking about that now seems rather pointless as it does the same thing as turning the DS off and then doing all that and turning it back on. I guess it would be more intelligent to ask if unmounting could be performed after the media is removed (that is if Moonshell doesn't lock up in the process of removing the media)?

No it does not lock up it (when I don't have any files open).
After card is inserted it just don't find any files, thats it.
Now when I inserted the card would it be possible that it remounts it automatically every time I select "MPCF" from the menu?

I was talking about unmounting with respect to the FAT library for NDS and GBA. This is currently a limitation of the library.

Do you plan on lifting this limitation in a foreseeable future version of your library?

Quite possible, but it'd probably have to close all open files first.

I suppose I could add an unsafe unmount function that just closes all open files and clears the cache without flushing anything to disk.

Good idea. Add that and a sync function (which flushes all open files) to the public API, and your library will behave as developers and app users expect.
