DS Misc > Shy-Guy on Mario Kart DS

#80647 - MechaBowser - Mon Apr 24, 2006 3:15 pm

Has anyone found the hack to be shy-guy without having to download from downloadplay? This would be really useful - thank you.

Shyguy was in mario kart? didnt know that, or at least i kind of remember hearing hacking rumours alongside playing the unavailable tracks online.

From looking around forums I not seen anything about a hack for it, sorry.

Well, I figured you could go into the file and replace two characters (ex. Shy-Guy and Mario), but when I tried that, I couldn't find Shy-Guy. It was possible to me to trade, like, Dry Bones and Toad, but the Shy-Guy file was missing. Later I found the Shy-Guy logo, but I can't still find the guy himself - anyone know where its hidden? (Oh, I used "DsLazy v0.6" to get into the file)

Shy-Guy only exists in the WMB binary and is written in a 'different' way. Therefor, it's impossible to play with him outside the 'demo'. Sorry.

The Shy Guy hack is pretty much impossible. Shy Guy's data files aren't in the normal "character selection" files and are in the files that are sent in DS download play.

Yeah, MaHe beat me to it. (and explained it slightly better)

No, it's just not counted as a character and is in the wmb binary. extracting the nintendo archives and replacing it with another character will make it work. So it is possible, although there are no good Nintendo Archive extracters out there.

That would mean that if you play with one card one of the DS' which downloads from your game would send the data of Shy Guy to the server DS. But does that make sense?

I'm guessing that there are two binaries: one used for single-player and multiplayer play, and one used for WMB on both the client and the server. The Shyguy data is in the WMB binary. To settle this, we could decompress the WMB binary (probably a .srl file) and search for model/texture data.

What about the DEMO of Mario Kart? I mean, you are automatically shy-guy no matter what, which means you don't download him :P
Taking the Shy-guy files from the DEMO and putting them in the real version, could be a possibility?

#80675 - CubeGuy - Mon Apr 24, 2006 8:07 pm

Only the cartless players are shyguy. The hosting DS uses the normal character list.

But the hosting DS also sees the Shy Guy because of the clients. So it must be somewhere ...

Wrong. There is only the model for multiplayer, although the 'car statistics', emblem placement info, etc. are not implemented in the full game. Maybe you COULD do I with weeks, months of reverse engeenering and experimenting, but hey - is it really worth it?

For what would it be useful? Funny, maybe, but useful?

Someone needs to make a stable Nintendo Archive extracter, Natrium has already made one but doesn't work properly. Parasyte has one too but has not released it.

The job by making shy-guy playable without downloadplay is possible - I've seen it! A guy on wi-fi was playing as the blue shy-guy.

Oh, and in the DEMO version, if you go play multiplayer (without any downloadplay at all!) you're automatically a random shy-guy! So it ought to be in the demo version :D

Sorry for going off-topic on this. I've only started poking around files since last night. I did a whole bunch of work that turns out was not needed. I guess I'd just like to ask this before I continue with my project out of boredom. Is there a dumper that decompress these (LZ77 compressed) files from Mario Kart DS on-the-fly? The Dumpers I've tried do not and that is where my personal project ended up. Also, what has been achieved with this game (mod wise)? Sorry for derailing the topic and asking noobish questions. (First day messing with a handheld, especially from Nintendo and just making sure I'm not wasting even more time.)

The demo version has no files that can be manipulated. All the data is stuck in the compressed ARM9 executable.
