DS Misc > Datel Max Media Dock (Not 4GB HDD)

#84242 - dualscreenman - Sun May 21, 2006 2:44 pm

Well, well well, looks like Datel has finally done it right. A media dock for the DS that accepts your own cards! It's also much cheaper. This looks much better than the HDD.

Edit: Sorry, I hate phpBB. (aka I'm not as good with it as HTML) I'm going to my options to *change* that now!
Edit2: Oh crap, bear with me for a second while I change my settings. (It's just that I hate the phpBB link system)[/url]

But according to the description, it requires the HDD.

Wait, all it said is that it needed the Launcher.

The page does not contain the word "Launcher", so where do you infer that? I'm guessing that this product is a MAX Media Launcher and Memory Stick reader in one, for people who have realized that there really isn't **** for commercial games or UMD movies on PSP. But if it works by itself, and can boot homebrew from the Memory Stick without the presence of a MAX Media Player, then it's the equivalent of MK4mini.

It's too bad that unlike in a Best Buy store, bestbuy.com doesn't let me turn the box around.

For good reason, lol.

What sense does this device make? Why would any one want to use a memory stick, when the Max HDD is required? Well, strange

so with this max media dock you dont need the software from moonshell to play your own movies and music saved on the HDD ??

Maybe its like MK3, which could load data from the SD but still needed the menu to be stored in a flashcart.

Also in discussion at DSLinux.

You do not need the HDD. Bestbuy just has their description messed up. I think they meant to say like the HDD or an alternative to. If you want more clarity on it visit the offical page on the datel website here: http://us.codejunkies.com/shop/product.asp...&l=1&ProdID=750
Also, the 'memory cards' are just CF cards. Up to 8 gigs can be used. It's basically a DS cart version of the HDD.

It sounds to me like it's compatible with the HD. "Media Player Browser" could refer to the file browser on the card, since it's a browser that plays media. I'm assuming it can also copy to and from the HD.

If it really is just a memory stick reader that still requires the HD, then 60 bucks is ridiculous. But then the HD was also priced around $ridiculous, so...

How much would a NoPass, a GBAMP, and a 4 GB Microdrive cost separately? I see Microdrive alone for $150. In addition, Datel's product is made so that it wraps around SLOT-2 of a DS much as a PassKey2 wraps around SLOT-1.

Weird, the one in the DS Linux thread seems to take CF cards and goes in the GBA slot, the one at Best Buy takes Memory Sticks and goes in the DS slot... O.o Then there is the launcher and the 4 GB HDD package that also seems to include a launcher... They really need to decide on one methode... :P

#84553 - JaJa - Tue May 23, 2006 8:48 am

Yeah, that messed me up.
I missed the link in the DSLinux thread, and so was going by images on the Datel website.
It's certainly interesting.
I'd much prefer to have a MAX Media Launcher and a GBAMP though, rather than that thing sticking out of the top of the DS.

guess we will have 2 wait for a review!!!

#85435 - Mighty Max - Tue May 30, 2006 9:47 am

I'm getting a bit confused here.

Are there two complete different devices with the same name? One going into Slot-1 and one into Slot-2 ?

[Images not permitted - Click here to view it]

If so, anyone tested the NDS-Slot one yet?

:edit: Bleh just noticed the different name on the box. However someone made a "Dock" Review on the Player ....

Here, I got you the right image:

We are probably getting those two different products and they both don't seem to be out, yet.

I got mine in the mail today. It includes a DS-sized passcart labeled "Max Media Player", but I believe it is just the MML.

The CF holder is really nice, but it won't boot up for me... I get the Datel splash screen, and then a white screen afterwards. If I use the passcart with my SuperCard CF, it boots directly into the Supercard browser no problem.

I will try changing the folder setup on the CF card and see if I can get the Datel browser to work.

What is the name of the .nds file on your CF card?

in the root I have "_boot_mp.nds". other than that I have several directories with the various .nds files in them.

I thought the Media Dock had a file browser built into the firmware directly...

Try renaming it to "bootme.nds". The "_boot_mp.nds" filename is specific to Chishm's NDSMP.

OK I got it working. I had the CF card upside-down ;p

the browser seems to work pretty well, with nice little icons based on the file extension.

True, but not everyone wants 4GB.

check out the review for the max media dock here:

http://iso420.com/nds/mmd/index.htm

It sounds pretty darn good. But i'm still pretty unsure about how well supported it is/will be.
