I managed to get a bit of traffic, but I think that WFC detects packet sniffing, because I wasn't connected for long.

Hm, is a sniffer running on the DS possible?

Ethreal is certainly what you want, you just have to get it configured properly, which is not always easy for a beginner.

You might want to look for a how-to online.

And try to use Linux, since Win XP blocks promiscuous(Sp?) mode from most cards.

You dont need to be a linux expert to use it, just download and burn a copy of Knoppix or Ubuntu or any of those "Linux on a stick/Disc" Live Linux installations.

No need to format, delete or reinstall anything, and mose of these distros come packaged with etherreal or similar tools.

For that, he would need two computers though, since the Linux drivers for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connector (or any RT2500 based card, for that matter), do not yet support Master mode, and can't be used as soft APs.

So he would need the one XP machine to actually be used as the AP, and then route that machine though the Linux machine, which would actually do the capturing.

Hate to burst your bubbles, but the DS could only sniff traffic upto 2Mbit.
Most other traffic is at 11Mbit or 54Mbit.

An AP can only set its data rate as high as the devices connected to it can run at.

So even if you have a G router, the DS running at 2 Mbps will bring all the traffic down to that speed when it is connected.
