beup 0.2
Roffle. Sorry, trip lasted more than I expected (waaay more), it wasn't under my control :(
Anyway:
beup.ds.gba
beup.nds
beup.tar.bz2
Changelog: Lots
- Added support for sending / receiving user display pictures through MSNSLP
- Added support for sending / receiving INK gifs (not sure if works with official client, it does work with aMSN, kopete and others)
- Can handle now 302 Transfer in SSL auth (I think, if it doesn't, contact me)
- Added keyboard pressed key mask thingy a lot of people asked.
- Updated to devkitpro19
- Fixed bugs where some transaction ids were expected to be 1 char long
- Changed principal interface
- Can change now avatar / display name
- Fixed bug where would crash if disconnected while chatting
- Fixed bug where MSN would still consider you online / in some session even after closing (in my PC works fine, probably an error of socket closing of the lib)
- Fixed some stuff where a principal would create new tabs continuously because beup didn't recognize that it had left the one before
- Tabs now appear only after partner sends a message (so sessions used only for avatar exchange don't clutter the tab container)
- Added some sounds
- Tabs now use principal names instead of account
- Fixed chat tabs in general
- Changed button look
- Simplified principal synchronization (hope it crashes less now)
- Implemented composite glyphs for dstype (now can display accents / tildes / stuff)
- More other stuff that I can't remember.
Stuff still wrong:
- DHCP still fails sometimes (probably the lib, probably *I*'m using the lib in a wrong way)
- SSL still fails sometimes (tell me somebody is writing a native SSL lib for the DS...)
- WEP seems to crash regularly (can't check it since I don't use WEP)
- I probably should create an interface to update network config on beup itself, so people shouldn't rely on firmware / weird dhcp behavior.
- Still uses small keyboard (even though many have asked for a bigger one). Anybody knows where to get a simplistic keyboard bitmap that doesn't have dozens of shade effects?
All in all, I'm sorry for making you wait. I'll start working on .3 soon.
EDIT: beup 0.3
If you don't want to get to page 23 to get .3, downloads are here:
With no fat lib support (for people using WMB, or who just don't want their card to be touched - saving is done in SRAM):
beup.ds.gba
beup.nds
With normal fat libs (most cards):
beup.ds.gba
beup.nds
With rein-patched libs (M3SD, SCDS...):
beup.ds.gba
beup.nds

Great, Kevinc :)
I didn't test already, but did you include the last version of dswifi ? The DHCP is more stable...
And what about a website hosted on drunkencoders ? You could post there screenshots, news, etc...
More thanks, Kevinc.. This one of the biggest homebrews (I respect the others projects too ^^ )

Awesome, kevinc. The sounds, the key mask thingie, the display picture display, the color selection, it's all just so complete. Keyboard presses seem way more accurate too. Thank you for the great work.

Woot, there's a bug in the drawing function I forgot to fix. I'll work on it now.
@alexfs: Funny, lots of people complained because it started as Offline, and couldn't find easily how to change it @_@

It has been working 95% of the time now... I guess I was very unlucky to encounter that freeze bug on my first try :/
It froze once when I clicked on the 'X' for closing the chat window. Maybe that was caused by something else and it was just coincidence that I just pressed it that moment though.

If you're using SuperCard CF, just create a blank BeUP.sav file and set it's attribute to 'hidden'. Then use the QPC method to save :) Works for me :)

I use SC CF |
1. Install SuperCard's patching software and go to it's folder.
2. Copy 'save.sav' to the same directory where you keep your beup binary (make sure it's the .ds.gba version with a renamed ext - let's presume it's called 'beup.nds' - '.sc.nds' extension won't work, for some reason).
3. Rename the .sav file to the same name as the beup binary (in our example 'beup.sav')
4. Pop the CF back to your SC and run beup.
5. Log-in using your data and then disconnect.
6. Now turn the DS off and immediately on again, go to the saver menu;
7. Find 'beup.sav' and press A two times
There - every time you will run beup, the SRAM data from the .sav file will get copied into SC's SRAM. This way you won't need to enter the account info all over again :)
P.S.: This works on all version of SuperCard. Tested & working on my SC miniSD (yes, I know it has a battery backed SRAM, thankyouverymuch).

did you use a blank GBA savegame renamed to beup.sav?
or did you completely make a new file and call it beup.sav?
if you did that, thats probably the problem...

How about some instructions on how to compile beup with the newest wifi libs? Names of tools would be a great help, but a tutorial on the commands, and where to put the files of the wifi lib (I'm assuming just replace the ones already there). I also noticed the avatar folder, so we can add our own in. Does it HAVE to be 96x96, and any filetype restrictions, like GIF and PNG only?

To compile, you must have:
- devkitarm 19
- latest libnds
- DEVKITARM environment var set to the directory where you installed devkitarm
- wifi lib is provided (until the cvs tree implements FIONREAD)
Then type make in the root folder.
Yes, you can put your own avatars in the "avatars" folder. But you must do "make clean all" in the root folder so that it takes in account the new files.
They do have to be 96x96, and in png format (since that's what the spec asks for; normal clients do the transformations themselves, but I want to keep beup small). Reading from SD/CF cards is planned for the next version :D
To set your own avatar, double click in your nickname in the principal tab, to open the profile tab. There you can change your nick and your avatar.

I notice that when I sign off and back on (either by reseting or using Start) that my avatar is set back to none. Is it able to remember it like how it remembers my login details?
Also, now that source is available, where is it that you define the defualt login status? When I recompile it with a new avatar, I may want to set that back to online. Just a file name and some of the line and I can Edit>Find it and change it.

Wifi Lib CVS Update
Again, a very small CVS update, addressing a few issues brought to my attention by people bugging me :)
This CVS update contains:
* DHCP fix! Now the intermittent failing of DHCP and the days of getting an IP of 0.0.0.0 should be over.
* FIONREAD support (As requested)
* connect() now operates in blocking mode! If you enable non-blocking mode before calling connect, it will still return immediately indicating success, but several people have asked for blocking mode (and I?ve been planning to add it anyway, just to be more ?correct?)
That?s all the feature updates at the moment, and I must apologize because they?re not very well tested at this point, but they should work. (I just don?t have the time to test today? at all)
If for some reason they don?t work, please let me know, of course.
Additionally, this is already known to some of you, but I have plans to add many new features and release a new precompiled library on friday or saturday this week - among the features planned to be added are: select() support, shared key authentication, support for ?hidden? APs (by way of probe requests), lingering TCP connections on close (so they shut down properly), and a few other large and small items. If you have requests, please post them :)
Anyway, need to get back to work?..
|
EDIT: Ah, I see you already commented. Is it as easy as a compile, and we could expect a new release from you sometime soon, or do you need to recode some things for the Fionread feature?

I can't login at all with beup, it hangs at "Doing handshake..." until it times out and disconnects. I'm using WEP on my router and also my login is ...@gmail.com , if that makes any difference. I'm using an M3 mini-SD with the MML.
Any ideas?

Yesterday there was a problem all day on MSN...
That the reason some of you had problems, as so, on the Pc you would have the same problems.

I just uploaded the program compiled against the latest wifilib, the changelog reports a fixed connection bug, you can try again.
Anyway, WEP support in the lib is not excellent, so you may have better luck with WEP deactivated.

Compiling anything else works like a charm.
BTW, your code structure is a lot different than the 'standard' nds code structure :) Why is that? And how do you know what parts of it are taken over by which CPU?

As I said in the first post, while I'm not new to programming (coming from Java), this is my second big project for the DS and C++ :D (that's why my makefiles and my init routines look nooby - ok, the whole program *is* nooby).
My philosophy for the CPU thingies is: arm7.c for ARM7, all the rest for ARM9. I was never a multitasking person myself.
PS. You need devkitarm19 and the latest libnds btw.

Anyway could i choose another image to put inthe avatar (not the default one) ?
How can I save settings on m3 CF?

Hmm, even tried sorting my WiFi settings out again and setting them manually but still no luck.
It gets an ip, gets an auth token, gets to "Authenticating... (still buggy)" then says "SSL connect failed", Authentication failed.
Any help much appreciated, im using an M3 SDMini and launching it by pressing START rather than A. Im using a Ralink Soft AP from my computer, and when I sign into beup I'm guessing username is your passport email address?
Maybe its something to do with ports? What ports need to be opened?
Thanks!

Hello,
good work Kevinc, and good luck with Ecuador ;)
i'm using DS (first European generation) with SD CF and all seems ok.
drawings work, i can change avatars, sounds are ok, event the QPC method works
I didn't try DHCP or WiFi Hot-Spot
About drawings: i think it could be more "sensitive", it's really hard to make a good drawing or writing, because even if the pen is well on the screen, there is sometimes no line or no plot.
There's still some problems with the keyboard but it's better.
Some ideas, what about
- Microphone ? ;)
- Several accounts ?
- Smileys ?
See ya soon
PS: sorry for my English i'm poor frenchman with a poor french soccer team ;)

Can you give a tutorial simple to change our avatar...
I don't know anything in programation so i need help... i am so noob :(
I have read, we must have - devkitarm 19
- latest libnds
- DEVKITARM environment var set to the directory where you installed devkitarm
- wifi lib is provided (until the cvs tree implements FIONREAD)
to compile the source.
I have download and extract beup.tar.bz2, in folder, there is "avatars". I put my avatars on this folder but now i don't know what can i do...
Help please !! ...

I'm really sorry, SSL is admittedly the worst part of my program, and even worse because I can't understand much of the lib (I didn't write it, I half ported it), and it seems most of the failures come from it...
I will give it first priority for the next release (even if I have to rewrite it), that I can promise :)

I could add full unicode font support, but that would require 3+ MB fonts... and with it GBFS or some other system, and many cards can't handle that.
Can you use roms with more than 4MB with GBAMP and similars? How?

Sure. Blocking was planning for this release but I forgot it... and you're right, some people just love long nicknames.
The program is supposed to re-invite your partner while you're typing, I'll check on that.
@madri2: Beup uses ttf fonts (just like Windows/Linux), not bitmap fonts (like moonshell). That allows me to do antialiasing and resizing at will. I'll look if there's a font that supports Japanese charas that's small enough.

Hi!
Just to report that the new version is much more slable than the previous one on GBAMP and WEP connection, once connected :)
It would really be nice to have maybe a button to load the settings (user and apss) from a simple text file in gbamp, do you think it would be possible to add?

Latest version works rock solid. Got the avatars to show and the sounds to play (only incoming though, not typing which is the one when I send one I assume). Have a few requests though, can either go in this one or the next one (or for anyone who wants to tinker with the source).
A clock on the upper screen in the blue Beup banner, laying in bed typing, I sometimes wonder what time it is.
(somewhat related to above) Time stamps (time displayed after that xxxx says:).
Save which avatar you used last like how it saves your account settings.

Subpixel antialiasing will look blurrier on a screen with the wrong pixel order.

Very likely. Does the DS Lite have a different channel alignment than the normal DS?
(and if it does, is there any way to detect in runtime if it's running in a Lite?)

This program is awesome. This is definetely one of my favorite DS programs now. Haha, you should have seen the look on my friends face when I told him I was talking to him with my DS. Well, you couldn't see it, but, you know.
"dude they made pictochat online?!"
Anyways, here's a couple things I would like to see in the future:
1. When using the drawing screen, you can press a button to make it maximize to fit most of the bottom screen, at least taking over the keyboard, so you can have more drawing space.
2. A button that instantly clears everything in the drawing space, like the one in Pictochat. Sometimes when I put the stylus down, it randomly draws a line across the screen. And it takes forever to erase - which brings me to my next point, more eraser options. The one on it is really tiny.
Other than that, this program is already really awesome. Thank you.

I will report back as soon as I have tested a working version.

Huh? It doesn't do anything that should crash the program :(, it only loads text mode and prints a lot of stuff.
I made a few changes. Try again? :)
#89465 - Malc` - Sun Jun 25, 2006 12:50 am
Magic! That did the trick. Right the text output is pretty huge, I dont really know what info you need from this....
It ended with "SSL_connect: ERROR CODE -210" SSL connect failed.
The 1st time I ran it tho it was something else, there was more text and it ended with "connection close" after some info about the time/date.
#89467 - kevinc - Sun Jun 25, 2006 1:05 am
The first time you were in :)
The second time... could you post all the lines? I need to know where the program was when it failed :D
#89468 - Malc` - Sun Jun 25, 2006 1:06 am
Havnt been able to get it to do what it did the 1st time at all since then :( I guess it worked properly the first time.
Keep getting this same ERROR CODE -210 now. More details:
SSL_connect: Entering state switch
SSL_connect: neededState 4
Wait: started
Wait: got something, waiting for more....
Wait: end
ready.... 536
GetRecordHeader: size 4 84 -> 1108
ProcessReply: Size test 2, got 531, needed 1108

Hmm... the lib gets a package too small, and is too stupid to wait for the rest.
Changed it to wait a little longer, try again. :)
@thundrestrike: Type make :)
You may need an unix-like environment for some utils (like "conv" for transforming the audio and bitmaps).
I will make it more Windows-compatible later (I just didn't expect anybody to want to recompile my program)

Yeah! It outputs loads more writing now, far too much for me to take in actually. Plus there doesnt seem to be any way to scroll up :(
Anyway it says the date at the bottom, followed by "connection: close" and the number 500.
:)
*EDIT: Ok, ran it another 3 times and ONCE it did the same ERROR -210 thing, but the other times its outputting all the writing and finishing with Connection: close 500, good job.
#89472 - kevinc - Sun Jun 25, 2006 1:35 am
In ends with 500 every time? If so, it's done :D
I'll wait to see what everybody else says before I backport it to beup.
EDIT: Ok, 2 of 3 is good, I guess...

Ran it roughly 10 times now, still only once had ERROR -210 - I'd say its pretty much fine for me now. Ends with 500 every time, yeah :D
Will this be easy to change in the actual beup program?
Nice one! :)
#89474 - kevinc - Sun Jun 25, 2006 1:42 am
Not really, it just tells the lib to wait a little longer (which makes the authentication last about ~6 secs, but it's OK for the sake of compatibility).
Let's see what others say.

I'm off to bed anyhow so I shall check back tomorrow, cheers for actually caring about those of us with issues with the program - very much appreciated. Can't wait to get it going :D

If you don't have an unix-like environment or don't have CygWin, you'll have to wait for SD/CF support in v0.3 :(

You can install fake UNIX on your Windows machine. DevkitARM comes with MSYS, a "lite" version of fake UNIX, or you can get the full version at http://www.cygwin.com/.

It might be something to do with my router.

*DSchat

*WiFi tester, I can connect and ping google.
What dosnt:
* This. (ssl error)
* Streaming audio in DSOrganiser

Hello, I need help :(
check what it says :
Quote: |
Connecting using firmware setup:
Searching...
Associating...
Acquiring host from DHCP...
Cannot connect. |
.. eventhough I can connect to Nintendo Wifi Connection and I can use other Wifi apps. I'm using a supercard CF
#89646 - Sebbo - Mon Jun 26, 2006 12:08 am
my recommendation is to not use DHCP (even though it should work)
jump on a computer connected to your wireless network, and assuming your running Windows, go Start -> Run, then type command and press enter. when command prompt loads, type ipconfig and you should get something like this:
Code: |
Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.
C:\DOCUME~1\SEBBS>ipconfig
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.18
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
C:\DOCUME~1\SEBBS> |
enter that info into your WiFi Connection settings on your DS, but change the last digits (after the last .) in IP Address to something else (i'm using 189) just make sure its less than 255 (inclusive) and that no other computer on the network is using that address

WEP is still the cause for most of the problems concerning homebrew WiFi. I recommend using a separate AP (my old RT2500 PCI card still works just nicely :D ) locking it to DS's MAC address only and lowering it's TX rate. :)
MrD: That's probably MSN's anti-schizophrenia protection :D

Okay, so then I guess I'll just have to wait and see if I can use later releases, sticks on the handshake for me, tried using different versions of msn too but nothing worked. How does the program know which msn on your network to try and handshake with? Just wondering if the other msn's on my network could be interfering.

See for me the worst part of this is that I really don't know what is the problem. It doesn't seem like it is my router since it is getting somewhere, and I can connect with games online. i'm gonna try and see if other wifi homebrew things work and can hopefully narrow down my problem.

It doesn't seem to be working now that I'm using my DI-524 router with 128- bit WEP and open authentication. Stalling at doing handshake. It did work when I tried to connect through a SoftAP, sometimes. IP set manually, but using an ASCII WEP key. (I'm not sure if it keeps it in ASCII or converts it to HEX)
I did the whole switching the TX rate to 54 mbps on my router, which is supposed to make it work with the DS. It doesn't seem to be working right with anything though, so maybe it only works with official games.

128-bit WEP,
and i use the HEX for WEP...
works fine...
in mix broadcasting mode,
and SSID broadcast,

lol
on my DSL (only) it 1/3 times stalls at the same point...

i don't think it does convert ASCII to Hex in the WFC settings, so put it in as Hex in there and it should be fine

Reminds me of the Fitaly keyboard for Palm OS which worked like this (you could drag it any way you liked if I remember correctly). A great feature.

But do you have the A revision, which doesn't normally work with the DS? And I'm using PPoE on my router, but I doubt that would make a difference.

I've always had weird issues with 'ink' on my MSN here.

hi
i have been trying to set up beup on my ds but still after 2 hours no success.
i have m3 cf and i am using the official wifi usb connector
and i am wondering if it is the connectors fault...
immediately when beup opens it crashes.
says connecting through firmware or something like that and then cannot connect.
i can't press any button as if my touch screen is sort of broken...
any ideas???
#91146 - HeinzHarald - Tue Jul 04, 2006 10:09 pm
In order for homebrew to connect to the internet via Nintendo's Wifi USB dongle you'll have to install other drivers for it, and run SoftAP (software access point). Search these forums for more info.

Hey i've started using this quite alot but occasionaly the DS will crash(or the program stops responding) and i have to restart the DS
Hardware: DS, Firmware: V7, Supercard CF, 512MB CF
PS:
If you want WEP testing then PM me and ill set up WEP on my router and test it
#91396 - Kvasir - Thu Jul 06, 2006 11:35 pm
I'm using it with WEP enabled on my router just fine.
#91397 - swimgod - Thu Jul 06, 2006 11:40 pm
WEP 128bit works just fine...

Thanks in advance :)

Well, the problems I was having with handshakes and such seem to have been 100% fixed now. I think what might have done it was going in and assigning a static ip to my ds through my router, and then setting up my connection in the ds firmware manually instead of using dhcp. All I know for sure is that I'm not having any problems with DS Wifi homebrew whatsoever any longer.

Sounds like it. My method is to have DCHP on for the router (for other family PC connections), but I manually assign the IP, DNS, etc. values in the DS firmware setup myself, and it hasn't failed me so far.
#91459 - Linky - Fri Jul 07, 2006 8:47 am
isnt there like another method to connect to wifi, with instructions like the one i showed before. without using WEP and with DHCP.
I'm kinda newbie at this
#91461 - tyrel2000 - Fri Jul 07, 2006 8:55 am
Man this is driving me nuts...
I get stuck on the handshake every time. I have no trouble connecting to online games like mario kart but homebrew apps like this that use the firmware wifi settings seem to give me grief. I can use apps like bafio's wifi chat fine (that uses the wifi transfer settings right?) and as far as I can tell I have used the same ip's, gateways, etc. so I can't see why it has this problem.
Am I just missing something easy (do I have to do port forwarding on my router or something?) or is it something tricksy?
If anyone has any suggestions that could help I would be so happy :P
#91529 - spacepirate - Fri Jul 07, 2006 7:24 pm
Try my suggestion of going into your router and assigning the DS a static IP and entering your settings manually into your DS. That should do the trick. If you need help doing that, let me know.

#91548 - tyrel2000 - Fri Jul 07, 2006 9:45 pm
Haha isn't it always the way... I get it to work right after I post (I've been trying for days) :P
I think what I did to fix it was to assign fixed ip settings for my wifi access point (they were auto assigned by my adsl modem/router before) and it now seems to work :)
#91549 - superfrenzy - Fri Jul 07, 2006 9:46 pm
It's not getting past the DHCP stage with me. My hardware is as follows:
- Original NDS
- Supercard SD
- SuperKEY
- Wireless network with WEP enabled, this is the most likely reason for the failure I guess.
- IP address is auto-obtain.
What we need is a version with WEP. I've seen other programs with WEP support so it must be possible...
-Edd
#91552 - Kvasir - Fri Jul 07, 2006 9:52 pm
works fine with WEP enabled for me. Try manually setting your IP,DNS,subnet and gateway values in the Wi-Fi settings for your DS.

Quick feature request:
When drawing in Ink mode, it would be fantastic if the text box expanded to take up the entire screen.
This way, one could communicate entirely with Ink in a more efficient way, since it is much easier to use than an onscreen keyboard (with some basic enhancements; Ink could still use some work... check out the drawing stuff in Bafio's DSChat).
Also with the Ink mode looking very different from the Text mode, it's easy to tell which one is being used.
Another thought: Why does Start log me out?
Seems a bit ironic :P
I think it would be better used as a shortcut to send messages, with a Sign Out button in the Contacts list beside where my own name goes.
Other than that, this is still great!
Definietly a suitable replacement to Messenger, and it's still early days :)
Regarding keyboards... I'm sure I've seen some really good ones lately. I'll post here if I find one.

I believe there are instructions for using Nintendo USB adaptor with homebrew, somewhere... it's my understanding that it was recently hacked or something?

If you're referring to "search", the problem is that phpBB search 1. defaults to "any terms" (OR) unlike Google which defaults to "all terms" (AND), 2. creates a POST query unlike Google, which uses a GET query that can be copied into a forum posting, and 3. requires a wait of several seconds between queries unlike Google.

I think it's the whole stylus code in Beup that's icky
If you use Ink mode, you'll notice that it bounces around a lot, too.
I guess this is a good thing, since there are some vastly improved stylus libs available which someone may be able to just throw in.
(Although, the keyboard could use replacing. Has anyone else noticed that Caps Lock doesn't work?)
I have the source with me, so maybe if I stare at it for long enough...
Edit:
NVM... I can compile this thing mostly, but I'm having trouble with the Wifi lib.
I think Kevin says it is included, but the compiler can't to find the included Wifi lib files. I added the wifilib to libnds, but still getting the same problem :(

my fiancee and I have been mucking around with v0.2a alot in the past couple of days and have been enjoying it thoroughly, but I do have a few suggestions for it.
Using the left and/or right triggers for shift/caps lock... i.e. click the trigger to toggle caps lock, and click it again to turn it off. You can also hold the trigger and click on any key to have it act like a shift key. This would allow for faster input with the stylus. (Left trigger would be better as shift, IMO, but have an option for Left handed people, remapping keys accordingly).
Have an option to automatically login the user after starting the program (rather than hitting Start) and then, once logged in, either have it set the person to Online, or the last selected Status.
Add the ability to select background color as well. Also, foreground and background color should be dynamically displayed in the entering box.
The color box should be larger, allowing the user more precise control over the selection, with perhaps some further dialog, like HSB, or RGB values, etc..
Add the ability to remap the keys. A and X work nicely, but, IMO, should be A and B, though some might prefer A and X.
Have a scroll bar on the right of the bottom screen that allows you to scroll the top screen through however much of a log can be kept in memory.
A menu button, similar to a Start Button on Windows, should be implemented for any additional functions, esp. all the simple things like logging off. Start is easy to use, but can be bumped and get annoying. Assigning it to a menu option would make more sense anyway (but don't stop people from being able to map it, via the remapping option mentioned earlier).
A timestamp function should be added - perhaps in an options menu, to append a timestamp to every message sent.
Are there any plans to add in a function to add contacts to the list? It's a bit of a chore to do so when away from a computer, and noone can seem to message us if they're not on our list.
How difficult would it be to add support for smilies and add the smilies built into MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger? (OR a generic list of smilies if there're copyright issues with using the ones in the official messengers).
These are just suggestions, and not demands - not trying to make them seem that way, and if they are, I apologize.

Just tested it out and ink between beup and Windows Live Messenger works very well - just need some new options for the ink mode, like thicker lines, more real writing (for smoother lines - perhaps slower writing, not exactly sure here), an ability to change the size of the pen tip and eraser tip, an option for clearing an entire drawing, etc..

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, since your wording was a little confusing to me, however I think I have an idea about what you're trying to say.
I don't think that any parties involved could charge you for using beup on based on two things. First you have entered into no such agreement for a payed service. Second they have no way to way to bill you.
#92801 - blues277 - Sat Jul 15, 2006 12:22 am
Thanks, but isnt it possible for them to bill you through your ISP?
#92836 - takieda - Sat Jul 15, 2006 1:21 am
no... you can't be billed for this - you never signed any contracts for it, so you never made a commitment to pay for anything.
The only reason why it says "Mobile" on a computer end is because a little bit of code in beup instructs the opposite side to see you as a Mobile messenger.
(I could be wrong on that last part - it might be because of the way beup logs into the system, causing the servers to believe it's a mobile unit. It still doesn't change the fact that you can't be billed for using it)

Has anyone else noticed that on beup 0.2 it says "Authenticating... (takes ~6 seconds) and on beup 0.2b it says "Authenticating... (still buggy)"? I didn't have occasional problems with ssl until i tried beup 0.2b. What's up?

I've read through this entire board, and I never saw this mentioned, but my account did not work for beup for some reason. When I created a new account, everything started to work flawlesslly for me. I created the account using Windows Live Messenger (latest version as of today), as did my fiancee, and the both of us have been enjoying it thoroughly.

i very much like this app... after confusion on why i couldn't connect to it with my AP or even the other IRC application. I noticed i could use this on my neighbours open connection. So my only issue seems to be that if you do not Broadcast the SSID (but know it personaly) it will not work. and also if you use wep it seems to not work...
after changing in my AP to broadcast the ssid and took off wep, in other words completely open, it worked however. Anyways to address this issue so it can work better with WEP and a non broadcasted SSID? Mario Kart and other games can do this through these settings, so i'm sure it is possible... other than that i'm very happy someone out there figured this out , it's a great program! :)

Using M3 CF with flashme 6 I think it is on old style NDS. Get a problem at sychronising contact list, it does that twice, printing it on the screen and makes the MSN "bing" noise about 5 times and thats it just stops there. Press connect again and restarts but gets to the same spot and stops. Eventually it will just lock up and you need to power on/off the NDS to get it at least trying to load. I had it working once out of about 20 goes but it crashed shortly after, about 5mins in. Looks great tho, hope I can get it working :)

Turning off SSID broadcasting isn't going to do anything security-wise, FYI. Anyone that is seriously interested in getting into your router isn't going to be stopped by either of those methods. If all you want is to keep casual passersby off of your router, WEP is all that is necessary.
Have you tried setting up your DS's wifi connection manually? (e.g. with a static ip, not using dhcp)

yes, like i said you can turn off SSID broadcasting, but then the application does not work, mario kart will work, but not this application, also having wep on screws with this application aswell. So when i finally Broadcasted the SSID and turned off WEP, i could get this MSN thing to work.... also an homebrew irc couldn't connect unless i did this aswell, (but some various DS games can get online with no ssid broadcast and WEP turned on)
anyways, as for the security of other people connecting, i think i figured out something good enough. i just added my nintendo ds mac address and turned on Wireless Card Access List, and Turn Access Control On.... so now only varified macs can get on.
Great application :)

actually to let you know the WEP works fine now so i guess the main problem was this program could not work unless you broadcast the SSID, thankfully WEP works and also limiting the MAC doesn't hurt.

1)I just flashed my Lite today. All apps work great but in beup the upper screen font is blurry for me too. It has nothing to do with talking to particular people, since it occurs as soon as i start the app.
Wierd problem, huh.Only on Lites and only on the upper screen.Kevinc, can you do anything about it?
2)Also,it's not very practical to type every time my username & password,we're talking about 32 characters here combined, maybe you could something to have it stored? In an .txt file perharps?
Great app,btw.

beup supports SRAM saves, so if you've got an M3, you can create a savegame for it, and it will work fine like that. I don't know how the other flashcarts work, to be honest, but the Supercard probably works almost the same like that.. if you have any trouble, just ask, and someone should answer you :)

This is kind of off topic here, but for the record, MAC address filtering won't do much along the lines of stopping true "hackers". MAC addresses are broadcast in plaintext (or are encrypted poorly), and it's not that hard to sniff packets and then spoof one, thus conquering the filter.
Again, it's decent protection against casual websurfers, but it's not going to stop anyone that wants to get into your network.

i wish moonshell would make it so when you launch a .nds it would not flash the whole ram,
maybe leave a mark to record the folder its in,
and extra information thats in a moonshell config file :P
that way the application doesn't need to have the config or w/e in the root :P
i mean making all these cool apps plugins would be kickass :D

Exiting to _boot_mp.nds may have to wait until Mighty Max's exec() becomes more stable.

It appears to be due to the subpixel order being different on the DS-Lite's top screen. I suspect that any homebrew utilising sub-pixel fonts from now on will need to perform a check for whether a DS-Phat or DS-Lite is being used and then use the appropriate font.
See my experiements with the fonts in Nethack DS here (7th post first page):

want to clean your list????
download:
dMSN (only for windows I think)
once downloaded and installed, log in and go to settings, then to privacy
you will be able to see your Fake Friends (people who deleted you from there list, but you still got them in your own list)
and Faked friends (vice versa)
so this is usefull.. :)
It helps to keep your list small and avoids fake friends :D

Just as they can do with your normal PC. The moral being, never run untrusted code :)
#93378 - takieda - Tue Jul 18, 2006 9:31 pm
even without using an external file. if you have a savegame for beup, the savegame has the user name and password in it, other unsavory homebrew could just send the save games up to their sites, etc.. I like the idea of external files though, because it would allow for logs to be created, full friends lists that would only have to be updated on reconnection (rather than having no friends list and it has to be downloaded every single time).
OT, Kevinc, what does the name Beup mean? I've been reading these forums a LOT and haven't found why it's called that.

So the GBAMP does not use any kind of save system like other, more recent flashcarts? useful bit of information - I didn't know that.. Adds another good reason to have external files for settings, et al.

Using WEP caused problems with BeUp. (Was fine with WFC games)
So I disabled it and it authenticates instantly. =)
Just wondering, my touchpad on the lower half of the screen is totally off in terms of calibration with ONLY BeUp. (but all other games do not have this issue) Is this a known bug or do i have to calibrate it off center just for BeUp?
Also, is it possible to get Ink/Drawing to work normally with official MSN clients such as Messenger Live (ver8)? As I talk mainly in Korean to heaps of my friends/family, Ink would be the only way to write them as BeUp doesn't support Korean. =P
Would love the touchpad refreshrate(?) to be faster also for Ink as it's quite choppy at the momenth.
hehehe. this app is great and can't wait for it to be near perfect!! =)

I think the keyboard should be more laid out like www.axek.org/ds/keyboardsuggestion.png
#94058 - germel - Sat Jul 22, 2006 7:58 pm
i like more its old style.
in that way it gives me the feeling like a real keyboard so i touch the key?s automatic (not search them)
i also love its normal design (design of HtheB)
Well will see right?

#94072 - Mr. Picklesworth - Sat Jul 22, 2006 9:35 pm
It's all about how frequently you use the key.
Do you really want that many keys crammed on-screen just so you can write special characters faster?
More efficient would be bigger Shift and number keys. (Among others).

Cool now it has smiley?s thats so cool i was always wondering what the other one was saying with his strange characters so now it will be displayed.. Thank you..!!

the news noticeable in the video are:
status selectable before connecting, smiles in nickname and in text, now it appears "now typing" when you are writing a messsage, messages have hours and minutes, different sizes of the pencil for drawing, the ability to scroll up and down through messages(in the upper screen)

I got my Max Media Launcher the other day and tried Beup. This homebrew is FANTASTIC.
A very well done to the author. Its apps like this that help put DS homebrew on the map.
But... as lots have pointed out:
The keyboard is a usability disaster!!
It is so frustrating to use and I hit the wrong characters all the time.
I have mocked up my ideal solution. If you like it and think it is better than what we currently have, then please push the author to include it in the next release.

#94343 - Dan2552 - Mon Jul 24, 2006 1:55 pm
Well when i press the wrong buttons it's not actually me pressing them, it's the touchscreen code in the lib or wherever, to make this more accurate I reckon the touchscreen should control a little mouse cursor and a button should be devoted to *clicking* (eg. the L shoulder button).
here's an example to show how well it actually works
(stylus to move cursor, L to 'click')
http://www.axek.org/ds/accuracy/
also when trying my example try tapping in one place, if you have the same problem as me, you'll notice sometimes the cursor goes flying off to a random place (though the touchscreen works perfectly on emulator)

Mockup #2 of improved keyboard/handwriting screen:
[Images not permitted - Click here to view it]
Other usability suggestions:
* Make better use of all the available buttons to reduce the number of touch's. How about assigning a "Send" button and even a "Backspace" button. (A/B?)
* Give the username/password fields some sort of visual focus (border highlight?)
* A minimalised login keyboard with something like this: [Images not permitted - Click here to view it]

This could be nice but then with its old version 0.2b colours.

Justatest: Your mockup definietly displays the ideal solution for how to space things out on the screen. (I've been thinking the ink pad could be bigger, too, since then I wouldn't need the keyboard!)
Perhaps Kevin can persuade DragonMinded to lend him the keyboard in DSOrganize?
I have been trying to compile it lately to attempt changing the keyboard myself, but the special (in a good way ;)) arrangement of the program is causing me a bit of trouble.
Could anyone who has compiled it successfully please post what platform you used, if you encountered any problems, and how you overcame them?
(And I'll try to get those error messages again so I can write them here).
Thanks in advance!
Other features I noticed, in case you forgot you added them :)
Added support for better readability with the top screen of a DS-Lite.
New graphics.
Logout button. (Hmmm... that icon confused me...)
Improved touch screen support. (I now can use Ink mode).

Just a little bit stressed >:)
Rewriting 10K lines of messy code isn't a relaxing exercise. But fun! You can do a lot of planning in advance to create some cool effects.
You eventually notice that you can't just rewrite text manually at a fixed pixel location everytime, keep pushing bitmap pixels by hand on every repaint() event, and expect that system to be scalable. Right now, with a set of widgets, I can create whole forms in 15 lines of code, that just tells me when an event happened (on click, doubleclick, mouse move, etc). And not specify a single position! everything just positions itself; that's useful when strings might change size, and would not look centered anymore on another language. And *that* has been where most of the bulk of the rewriting has been: reusability and automatization.
And about the fat libs, yeah, that I wasn't very enthusiastic about. Especially when at one time I had to recompile the program for 5 different libs. Right now is either you're libfat compatible or too bad. Each widget loads their bitmap skin from the drive, font and strings from translations are all read from configuration files (which are outside the program), so no FAT access would be impossible.

#108324 - Bomber - Tue Nov 07, 2006 8:37 pm
Hello, Bomber here...
I am just another person who needs help, after tryin' to get Beup workin' right serveral times. This is all the information I've gathered and I hope someone can help me out. Please help after readin' the followin:
First things first:
* Passcard3 and a Supercard (DS Lite)
* Mini SD
* Wireless internet (Usin' WEP)
* IP: 192.168.1.12
* Usin' Beup 0.3 chishm (also have Beup 0.3 rein, but usin' this as backup.)
Problem:
* I power up my DS Lite and execute Beup 0.3 . Then, if I do nothin', Beup himself uses 'firmware' and I arrive at the next page. From there, if I fill in my email and password, leave the two boxes for 'auto loggin' and 'fix blur' open, change my start status to everythin' BUT offline and hit the connect button, Beup begins to connect. And that's where it all ends. Last two words:
"Doing handshake.."
Things I have already done, but do not understand:
* I can interfere from the moment I execute Beup and need to fill in my IP address by pressin' 'stop'. Then I can make Beup find a couple of SSID's, includin' my wireless connection, but even then if I choose my own connection I will get the same outcome. Normally, Beup uses 'firmware' to connect and the SSID stays blank. W...what?
* I read somewhere that in order to save your settings, you have to copy 'save.sav', rename it to the same Beup you're using and then add it, in my case, in the SD Card. Enter your settings one time when executin' Beup, immediatly disconnect, goto the saver menu of the Supercard and press A two times to save everythin'. I did this, although as discribed earlier, if I connect usin' SSID, disconnect and then save in the saver menu, Beup will not remember the SSID I logged in with. Huh?
* I've changed my WIFI connections in the DS usin' Metroid Hunters/Lost Magic (Great games =D) I've changed the last digit of my IP address. So to say, .12 became .13 . Question: My normal IP ends with .12 , but I've changed the IP address to .13 in my DS. Which IP must I use to log in at Beup? .12 , .13 or somethin' else?
* I've taken a good look at my internet connection and I think everythin' is supposed to be as it is. The connection is OPEN, not SHARED. I can't seem to disable my WEP, but from what I have heard Beup can work with or without WEP. The WEP keys are HEX, not ACSII. The only thin' I haven't seen yet is 'DHCP'. I heard that DHCP can be the problem, but then again kevinc himself said that Beup is supposed to work with DHCP.
That's 'bout it. If I forgot somethin', please let me know. I hope someone took his/her precious time to read all this and help me out. I would appriciate it from the bottom of my heart.
Bomber out. ?

Many people have today been complaining that they cannot connect using beup. The is infact a valid reason for this being that the IP address that beup is trying to connect to, is no longer a valid MSN dispatch server.
There is a fix for this as posted by kevinc but nobody has posted any fixed versions yet:
Yes. Beup is trying to connect to an IP which no longer points to a valid MSN dispatch server. I don't have the resources to recompile beup right now, so if anybody wants a quick fix, go to msn.cpp and change the Dispatch_IP line to:
#define Dispatch_IP IP(65, 54, 239, 20)
then recompile as normal.
I've begun work on 0.4, so sorry if I'm not properly maintaining 0.3 for the moment
Normal Recompile:
There is no default makefile. Instead, if you want to compile, for example, the "nofat" version, try make -f make-ds-nofat. For the "rein" version, try make -f make-ds-rein. And so on.
#109487 - laurens - Sat Nov 18, 2006 6:05 pm
About the handshake problem;
I had it too, most of the time its caused because of you being to far away from your router/wi-fi stick.
try to move as close as possible to your router/wi-fi stick and see if it works then.
#109510 - eledu81 - Sat Nov 18, 2006 10:25 pm
Hi ppl, Stormingsoul was right, I made the modification and recompile
#define Dispatch_IP IP(65, 54, 239, 20)
it is not too dificult though..

Can someone post a version that will work with SC Lite? Or, more specifically, compile the nofat/rein etc versions with the new dispatch IP? I've tried this myself and failed (don't ask), and it would be faster for someone else to compile a version than to troubleshoot for me.

Since i cannot find a compiled version of beup with ninjaDS support, i decided to compile latest version (0.3), it has the dispatcher ip changed.
It is based on libfatdragon, btw the make-ds-dragon has LDFLAGS set to -lfat-rein instead of -lfat-dragon, so it took me a lot of time to understand why it didn't work.
Remeber that settings are stored in beup-user file.
You can find it on http://scognito.drunkencoders.com/projects/misc.php
Cheers,
Scognito.

I have no time to read all those 25 pages, but maybe i have a great idea to make this MSN client more usefull.
Is it possible to make a default wordlist so if i want to type the word "computer" it automaticly apears on the screen when i type comp?
I hope u understand what i'm trying to say, but I'll try to explain.. Let say i want to say the word computer to a friend of mine with your msn client..
when i type the word, C ... O ... M ... P. Now what would be nice if the client automaticly fill's in the remaiming letters. Or just asks me in some way "do you mean 'computer'?" The i click on yes and then it fill's in the word "computer" itself..
Would that be possible? On the internet are a lot of wordlists available.. Engelish would be fine.. But as you can see in my profile in a dutch man, so maybe i can help you find a dutch wordlist...?

Hey thanks for the beup messenger is very useful.
I just wanted to know if its possible or to difficult to add support for the Wi-Fi Nintendo USB adapter because the thing is that I can connect to the Beup Mesenger from any Wi-Fi Hotspot but I don't have Wi-Fi at home and it would be very useful and important to access the Beup using my Wi-Fi Nintendo USB Adapter.
Is it possible to connect to Beup using the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB adapter?
#119708 - tepples - Sun Feb 25, 2007 2:32 pm
It can if you convert the Wi-Fi adapter into a soft access point using downloadable software. If someone could dig up the link for that, we both would appreciate it.

I want to do that. I need to get my Wii and DS online, and I don't have a wifi router where I live now.

could you add this options?
- add block/unblock
- add and option to allow view all contacts
- allow to view subnick
- events menu, as msn plus
- possibility to log conversations in a txt file
- ... a bigger keyboard would be possible? (i think that this is more difficult)
sorry for my english, i am catalan ^_^
i know programming in C, is there anyway to get the source code to try to help to add updates?
thanx!

Hey there!
First of all, thanks to guys like you, the DS has demonstrated to be more powerful and versatile than people think.
And now the serious thing. I still can't connect with BeUP. Have the common SSL trouble, it gets sticked there all the time. I have the european black DS Lite with Supercard DS One (micro SD 1Gb). It's a so-called Slot-1 card. Does that have anything to do with the malfunction of BeUP?
Thanks in advance.

try a different messenger address
mine throws SSL errors with @msn.com
with @hotmail.com it works fine
#127879 - dantheman - Sun May 06, 2007 1:53 am
Also make sure you get the temporarily fixed version from the other thread. HtheB's latest release has this lockup issue.
#127900 - tuxmeister - Sun May 06, 2007 10:49 am
I've tried with @gmail.com and @hotmail.com and none works.
And, dantheman, what other thread? I've downloaded it from three different spots and different versions. I've tried 0.2, 0.3 final and 0.3e and none of these versions work :(
I've been reading from the first page of this thread and I thought that the problem was gonna be solved by increasing the SSL Authentication time limit but I'm still not able to connect. I also tried to run the test.nds (SSL test that appears some pages before this) but the link doesn't work anymore.
I will appreciate any kind of help, and thanks again!

well, there might not be anything you can do
beup is just not working all that great at the moment, so it might be something just out of your control
#127940 - dantheman - Sun May 06, 2007 9:06 pm
I can't find the exact thread where it was released, but Frigolit made a temporary fix to it, and there's a link at http://forums.ds-xtreme.com/showthread.php?p=38097#post38097

I hope someone rebuilds beup, fixing what needs to be fixed and adding what should be added.

HtheB still has the files needed so you will have to contact him to continue development.
The question is who is prepared to continue it on? kevinc - HtheB - ?????

Hello !
Is this the "very latest" version ?? Beup live fixed and refixed ?
If yes, we could ask someone, motivated, to re-take the project in good hands.. :)
Anyway, thanks a lot !

Try setting the Wifi channel on your router/AP to channel 11.
#158521 - hgeithus - Thu Jun 12, 2008 9:09 pm
Hi.
I have set up my connection properly meaning I can connect an play online with Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat and download Puzzles with the Layton game.
So the connection is fine (I strongly assume)
I've been testing Beup earlier (think it was 0.3e), but I always got stuck on "doing handshake". Is the latest version working? And in that case, do someone have a direct link? There are som many different versions. Hard to find the correct one.
That would have been really great! :D
Thanks in advance..
(I have a DS Lite with R4DS)
#158526 - yellowstar - Thu Jun 12, 2008 9:46 pm
When I googled for the beup web site, I also found this.
It is about DS-X, but it's the same problem you're having.(With a solution that might work for you)
#158533 - hgeithus - Fri Jun 13, 2008 12:29 am
I found that HtheB has moved his site to this adress:
http://htheb.area-ds.com/index2.html
I downloaded this file from his site:
File name: Beup Live 0.3e.nds
Disk usage: 1 261 568 byte
I tried to run it without DLDI patching, and with DLDI patching. The result was the same (anyway I think the software on my R4DS chip can patch on the fly so..)
I still get this message when trying to connect:
"Starting connection
Connected to the MSN dispatch server
Doing handshake..."
Then after 1-3 minutes (varies), it says:
"Lost contact to server, disconnecting"
Is this a regional problem? To me it seems to be no relation between correct installation/setup and being able to log in successfullly.
I wish I was a master of DS programming, than I could have fixed this myself :)
Any other toughts?

beup is not working right now because Microsoft changed their servers. No matter what you'll try, it won't work, so you'll have to wait for the next beup version to come out.
#161596 - Sir_Voe - Wed Aug 06, 2008 10:40 pm
I use the bitlbee server with ClIRC for my basic DS IM needs. I haven't tried MSN on it, but it should be a working solution, at least until beup is updated.
