Alright,
I'm satisfied with this enough to make the first release. Make sure you read the instructions!
This version is still very limited. I've only tested it with my linksys router, and a few AIM usernames. I hope that you are able to log in. We'll see.
Anyway, let me know if it works.

Amazing! I've logged in and am chatting now! Thank you so much!
One request, if you're taking any. Is there any chance you could make it so it looks like the keyboard buttons are pressed down so I know I'm hitting the correct letter? In Beup, when you press down, the letter button that you hit changes color as you push it.
Thanks again so much!
#95210 - Primetime00 - Fri Jul 28, 2006 6:00 am
brennan: you can send and receive. I've not seen this bug... what names? the names on the buddy list or the names elsewhere?
dafatkid27: Next release will have this.
#95211 - sinoth - Fri Jul 28, 2006 6:01 am
Working
System: DS Lite
Firmware: Flashme v7
Card: G6 Lite Chinese
Bugs: If I IM someone with an alias "person" for example.. it opens up a conversation for them. However, when I receive an IM back, a new conversation is opened from "person:::w". Everything else seems fine so far.
Suggestions: As dafatkid27 said, it would be nice if the keyboard buttons changed color when you hit them. Also, I think the SEND button should be where the Enter key currently is. The SEND will get much more use than Enter.
Thanks for the great work!

I seem to hang at Connecting to Wifi.
EDIT: Nevermind, I got it now.
Works perfectly.
EDIT AGAIN: I do seem to hang on Connecting to Wifi. And when/if it says failed to connect to wifi, I can't retry?

Eck, sorry for posting again so quickly but Pinesal reminded me of something else I was going to bring up.
The first time I tried to connect I also froze. Not sure why. It would be nice if a window showing the connection steps appeared, so if you freeze you know which step its on.
Also, would be nice if the Buddy List could be navigated with the D-pad.

The names when I'm talking to someone. Like it should be...
hi im brennan: yo.
dude9387532895671:hey
It shows up as...
:::w: yo.
:::w: hey
EDIT: And some of the names on my buddy list don't show up at all, just a space. (I know they are on because I'm also on the computer)
Come to think of it, these might be the names that are shoting up as :::w when I send them a message.

I LOVE THE KEYBOARD in your software. Nice and big. I almost never miss a key. They layout works well, very usable interface indeed.
#95220 - dafatkid27 - Fri Jul 28, 2006 6:45 am
Alright, back wuth more requests/suggestions and comments.
1) I love the big keyboard, please keep it as is, just add the pushed button feature as above (which I know you already confirmed, thanks).
2) Make it so it says when someone signs off if you have a chat opened with them (just like in AIM, "suchandsuch has signed off" right below the last line of text).
3) Please add the ability to navigate the buddy list and chats opened box with the DS's D-pad.
4) Maybe make the chat dialog box a bit bigger and the area where you enter the text a bit smaller.
5) Please add an away message feature. For example, I want to be able to put up an away message that says, "On my DS, may type slow", or any other away message.
5 1/2) Maybe when you close the lid of your DS, your default away message goes on and your DS goes into standby?
6) Lastly, saving of things to SRAM, or even just the ability to create a configuration file beforehand that it reads (I have an SCSD). It would be great not having to type in my username and password every time, but again I understand that this was a preview release, and I thank you for it.
Again, thanks so much for this wonderful application. Also, I hope you know that these are suggestions and comments and not complaints. Hopefully you are able to incorporate some of these ideas soon, but I understand that it's not necessarily easy. Thanks in advance!

A lot of the names in my buddy list are blank.
Here's a conversation with my other SN. The blank SN is my PC SN. ":::w:Ron" is my DS SN
:::w: Hi
:::w:Ron: hi
:::w:Ron: whats up?
:::w: Nothing. You?
:::w:Ron: im using my ds!
Some sort of crazy bug?

it works awesome-ly! or something to that extent.
except most of the same things other people have asked about. i don't know how many of these you're already planning on adding, but here are my suggestions. many of these are small issues, or are only asthetic ones.
-be able to see when keys are hit.
-fix Usernames. many usernames show up as a blank space on the buddy list, and show up as ::w: on the chatting screen.
-add imsend and imrcv noises! just rip the default ones from aim.
-save login info on the login screen, and be able to mask password (ie, *****).
-sliding scroll bars.
other that that, it looks great!
btw, you asked what equipment we use to make it work, so here you go: Ds Lite, flashme v7, M3 SD, SanDisk 1GB SD card.

I haven't been able to try this yet because my internet is being too flakey, but I have a set of emoticons I started working on a while ago:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y60/mntorankusu/smile.png
In two different sizes! I'm not really sure what is missing from this set.
You can use them if you like. Or if you want me to make a new set at a specific size, I could do that too. Just, I can't make them any smaller than the small set here.
#95253 - Primetime00 - Fri Jul 28, 2006 12:48 pm
Hey guys,
glad its mostly working. This ::w: bug seems to be more common than I though.
If it is okay, post or PM me one of the screen names that come out as ::w? Also, is this only with names that have aliases? I'd like to fix this problem ASAP.
mntorankusu: those emticons look great to me, I'll use those if it is ok.
dualscreenman: I've def not seen this one. If others have this problem, let me know.
sinoth: The freezing you saw. was was "Connecting to WIFI" being displayed, or was it "Logging into AIM?" Sometimes it does hang there for awhile waiting for AIM to respond. I don't know if I can fix this problem yet.
Lots of good ideas on new features. I especially like the shutting the lid/away message. I'm working to put this stuff in as well. But I'm going to try to fix these other problems first.
If you guys want, I've tried to support most of the AIM errors. You should get a dialog box whenever an error is received. For example, someone sends you a message that is too long. It should also disconnect when your connection is down for about 30-45 seconds. If you guys want to test this, feel free.
Well, I'll get on these fixes and new stuff. I gotta go work now though.

Great. I'm working on some more of them right now.
Is there any chance of having animated emoticons? Some things like  and :winky: can't be properly portrayed with still images. Not that it's particularly important, though.
Oh, and I got a chance to try the program out. The actual meat of the program, the IMing, works flawlessly. It's perfectly usable in its current state. I'd just like a way to have the username/password be saved and loaded from the CF.
Edit: Here's a new set of those emoticons. I made some new ones, and improved the old ones.

Thanks for this great application!
Maybe you should call it DS AIM/ICQ ;) because it works "fine" with my icq account, and here in germany icq is far more popular than AIM and i don't think everybody knows thats kind of the same thing.. i wasn't shure either.
i wrote "fine" because the progam freezes after a few minutes of chatting and i cant do anything but shutdown the DS.. the WiFi-LED is still blinking though..
also every once in a while it already freezes at "Connecting to WIFI"
Ds Lite/Supercard SD/Superkey in case you care ;)
Suggestions:
-Put a hook at the bottom of the small "J" it looks almost like the small "I"
-other keyboard layouts (german) would be nice, but that can wait ^^
-Send-button at the free space next to the space-bar
-remembering of login-infos (config file?)
-usage of the d-pad instead of the onscreen arrows
-better/bigger scrollbar for the received messages
Edit:
the freezing only seems to occur when you use a icq account, im really sad about that :(

my s\n gets though logging in, but the client seems to freeze after that
unable to type\get buddy list
and my brothers just dosnt log in
using
M3 Sd
Myflash Adata 4GB
SanDisk 1GB
Netgear router
anything im doing wrong?
or dose it not work with SD?
#95268 - Primetime00 - Fri Jul 28, 2006 2:42 pm
deshi: I've not tested it all all with ICQ. I knew the ICQ may of been compatible. When I get some time, I'll bring out my ICQ and try to find what causes the freeze.
2 2 5: Does the buddy list window come up when you hit R? Does the clock time change? I want to know if the program freezes or just the AIM portion.
It shouldn't matter, but if you are are using any capital letters in the username, try to keep them all lower case. I should of fixed that problem, but it might be a variant of that for your brother.

hmm. It's not working for me. It connects and logs in, but then it just sits there and doesnt recieve my buddy list. The only button that works there is the caps lock button. :-\
using gbamp and max media launcher.
*EDIT*
I got on the computer and logged in on my other screen name, and it showed me logged in on the DS. so i started talking to myself and it works. but im still not getting the buddy list...

#95283 - Primetime00 - Fri Jul 28, 2006 4:19 pm
clone dad: you can still see the buddy list window after hitting R right?
If so, after sending an IM to your DS from your PC, set an away message up on the PC side and then see if at least your screen name from your PC is added to your DS buddy list.
Sometimes AIM express is slow to pick up all names on the buddy list I have heard. This may be the problem.
DSAIM will only add people to the buddy list window whenever AIM tells DSAIM the user is online/away/etc... AIM must not be sending this message.
#95298 - The_Mayor87 - Fri Jul 28, 2006 5:29 pm
first, thank you. this is the main app i've been waiting for. worked fine for me the on the first try.
DS phat
flashme v7 (stealth)
GBAMP
i only have one problem and suggestion (besides the ones above)
the problem: i was watching on my computer from a different account, and when i "signed off" DSAIM, it didn't sign me off. the account still said it was online and i could still send messages to it. you said you were going to fix the signoff issue, though, so this isn't really a complaint, but more of a warning to those who sign off and miss messages that people have sent to them afterwards.
suggestion: press "L" for shift. i'm not sure why, but without thinking i pressed L when i wanted to shift. i'm not sure what (if any) programs do this, but it's pretty good, and allows me to type faster, for me at least.
wonderful job, thank you.

Seconded, I just tested this and my username is still logged on, even though I turned off my DS. Also, I've signed on with my DS about 3 times total between last night and this morning, and when I just went on AIM on the computer, it sent me the AOL System Message notifying me that I was signed on from 3 locations.
But, I'm sure when a proper sign-off feature is implemented, this will stop happening. Thanks again!

I really like that sliding idea. The only place I've seen it implemented is in DSOrganize, with the MessagEase keyboard. It's a great idea!

The sign off problem happens because the client never tells AIM that you've signed off. That hasn't been implemented yet. It will be in the next version. As of now, you have to wait for your name to timeout to sign off. Its an easy fix, I just need to implement a menu that allows the user to sign off.
I'll prob make the enter key send the IM. I just didn't do that for this release. I'll haven't tried DSOrganize, so I'm not familiar with the sliding key. I'll have to check it out.
clone dad: glad it seems to be working. Anyone with the ::w problem, please PM me one of the names/aliases that causes this so I can debug.
Linkiboy: Next release I'll have it.
For anyone who has a problem with the client freezing (clock stops working), I might release a debugged version that sends the program status to my machine so I can see where the freeze occurs. OR, I can release a PC client that will display debug messages, so you can tell me where in the program the freeze occurs.
I hope to get everyone's working before the next release and next set of bugs arrive :)

Hrmm, I'm having issues logging in. Initially it would hang on connect to wifi so I figured it was DHCP issues, I booted up my trust WFC Enabled game and changed everything to static, I'm using the same DNS as my PC and I can connect to WFC just fine but when I try to connect to AIM I no longer hang at Wifi but I can't resolve the host. Good work, man. Operational on my G6 3rd gen 4Mbit. Pretty bad ass. I'm people have suggested plenty of features so far, and I'm pretty much in agreement with all of them. I like the big keyboard, too. I'd just like to see the interface cleaned up a bit. Sorry to compare your preview to more established works, but I think beup is a great example for an interface. Working flawlessly on DS Phat w/ Flashme and DS Lite w/ Flashme and SCSD. I'm using the .ds.gba version and have my wifi connection set up manually. Great program, keep up the good work!
Here are my suggestions:
- Change the button's color when it is "pressed down" so that you can tell when you make a spelling error without looking at the top screen.
- Maybe make the cursor or something blink so you know the program hasn't crashed? I sat there for a minute wondering what to do... then I remember to read the readme. heh.
- Turn off the screens when the lid is closed, just to save battery life.
- Add a disconnect button or fix it so that you sign off as soon as your turn off your DS
Again, keep up the good work! This is an app I've been wanting ever since I got into DS homebrew.

Thanks for the reply.
It's a "Super Card SD" Cart that takes a mini 1GB SD.
I bought my DSlite in Hong Kong, so it came "modified" as they call it. So all I have to do is stick the GBA cart in, and turn on the system, and your file will play on both screens. So there is nothing in the DS slot.
I have a linksys router. Are there ports I should open? DNS servers i should put in? What could be the problem?
I can play other online games fine with this router and this DS.

Cool,
For everyone having problems signing on with certain names, could you PM me your screen name. I won't use them in any way. I'd just like to see if there are any similarities.
Thanks.

Just thought of another idea, maybe switch the buddy list button to L instead of R so you don't have to move your right hand to pull up your buddy list? Also, maybe allow scrolling with the d-pad, too.

I PM'd a little better explanation but I just wondered if anyone else got a username with an organized list of friends (IE Buddies, Work categories like that) to go alright? All three of mine failed - the only one I could get to work was a username I had with just a few buddies on it.
Awesome program though

Mine's working fine. Mine is also organized (Buddies, School Friends, Recent Buddies) and I'm having no problems.

This is what I use to type. Please replace the ENTER key with the SEND key. There's no point in having an ENTER key when using AIM. If I want to type multiple lines, I hit shift+enter.
#95554 - superdinoyoshi - Sun Jul 30, 2006 5:59 am
Hmmm... I have been looking forward to an aim program ever since Beup came out. It sounds like you did a great job with it! Unfortunatley, mine either hangs while connecting to wifi, connects but only gives me the bottom screen with something ocassionally flickering over it, or an empty buddy list and then the application freezes. Im sure most of it is something on my end, so I'll make sure im close enough to my router, and once over everything, then get back to you. On the other hand, i absoultley love the keyboard, most certainly its one of the nicest (with the issue that the key needs to change colors when pressed) ive worked with!
#95567 - picto-chat predator - Sun Jul 30, 2006 8:44 am
What's it mean when it "failed to connect to WiFi"? I can play on-line games on my ds just fine with this router setup (linksys). What am I missing?
#95573 - Primetime00 - Sun Jul 30, 2006 9:54 am
picto-chat predator: Connecting to wifi is done the settings in firmware (the WFC settings that are set up in any DS commercial game.) If you using DHCP to connect in WFC games, then this is probably why its not working. You need to probably manually set up an IP address instead of DHCP. I Think...

You are crazy.
The enter key will send IMs in future releases.
Later this week maybe, I'm going to release a version 0.01d which will send the program status back to a server running on my machine so that I can see where freezes/login failure occurs. I will need a few volunteers to run this version a few times for me. Please let me know if you are interested.
Thanks again

I think all a new release needs is your account name+pass is saved so you dont have it type it in everytime. And the enter being send.
But this has surpassed NDSmail as my favorite homebrew.

#95783 - ssj4android - Mon Jul 31, 2006 2:16 am
It's hanging at "logging in to AIM".
My name does have a space in it. Could that be a problem?
#95806 - skullmaster1000 - Mon Jul 31, 2006 4:36 am
WOW. amazing program. you are a SAINT. the only thing i would reccomend is maybe some sound (clicky sound when you click they keys and an im sound would be cool) and for the keys to change color when you click them. other than that, it may as well be a final release, nothing "alpha" bout' this.
#95812 - Primetime00 - Mon Jul 31, 2006 5:02 am
I'd like to find out why its hanging on the login for some of you guys. It does every once in awhile with me, but i just restart the program and it works. If its hanging on the .NDS version try the .gba.ds version just for the heck of it.
I'll release a debug version in a few days so I can see where it is hanging. If it is hanging where i think it is... It may be either the AIM server or the wifi libraries. We'll see.
-Ryan
#95883 - marzxbarz - Mon Jul 31, 2006 12:17 pm
I think it's because of the buddy list size. I tested dsAIM with three AIM accounts.
Acct #1 (224 buddies) = hangs & produces static noise @ login
Acct #2 (200 buddies) = same as #1
Acct #3 (1 buddy) = works flawlessly
Just a speculation. Maybe DS AIM only shows the online buddies but will still have to check through all the buddies on the list to see if they're on, and 200 is just too much ATM?
Anyhow, great app! I look forward to the next releases, and will be glad to aid you if you need help :)
My setup is as follows:
DS Lite w/ Flashme v7 + SuperCard SD w/ 1 GB 150x A-data Turbo
Network: BEFW11S4 (WEP 64-bit, 1-2mbps max, DHCP enabled) -> WRT54Gv2 (WPA) -> DSL modem
#95890 - Primetime00 - Mon Jul 31, 2006 12:39 pm
marzxbarz: is that 200 names that are currently online, or just a 200 name buddy list? (online and offline)
#95892 - marzxbarz - Mon Jul 31, 2006 1:00 pm
200 in the buddy list, 30-60 online
#95943 - elmnt61 - Mon Jul 31, 2006 5:43 pm
I was also thinking that.. my buddylist has over 200 people... that could be why it never works for my 2 screennames that have over 200 :p
#95954 - Kung Fu - Mon Jul 31, 2006 6:37 pm
First....Primetime....we love you. Second...um.....well lots more people love you. And now for my only comment....not all screennames display on the buddylist(someone probably told you this already), they often only display the status as idle or away.
Ill gladly test that debug version also.
#95959 - Primetime00 - Mon Jul 31, 2006 6:56 pm
Kung Fu: Can you give me a screen name that doesn't show up? I'll add it to my list to see if it shows up on mine. Also, does the name use an alias?
-Ryan
#96006 - ssj4android - Mon Jul 31, 2006 9:06 pm
It is either the 200+buddies or multiple groups that makes it freeze. I just imported the buddy list from a non-working acount into a working one, and the working one no longer works.
#96008 - Primetime00 - Mon Jul 31, 2006 9:10 pm
I will have to test this. How many groups do you have?
I will run a test where DSAIM thinks it is using a buddy list with many groups and many buddies and see if this causes it not to work
#96010 - ssj4android - Mon Jul 31, 2006 9:13 pm
11 groups. I also have some people duplicated in two groups, and some cellphone numbers. (+11234567890)

Ok, so I assigned an ip to my ds manually and now I can finally connect to my router but after it says "logging into AIM..." I get an error saying "cant resolve host...". What the fizzy?
Please help me, I feel like I am ever so close and I really want some DSAIM goodness!
#96133 - Primetime00 - Tue Aug 01, 2006 4:13 pm
picto-chat predator: Does it give you this error consistently? Try both the .NDS and .gba.ds files. This error means that DSAIM was unable to convert the host name for AIM into an IP address.
What router do you have?

The wifi lib i'm using a couple weeks old from CVS. There has been a few updates, i'll try recompiling the new lib into DSAIM. I'll put it in my 0.01d version. There won't be any new features in the d version yet, just some fixes hopefully.
#96248 - picto-chat predator - Wed Aug 02, 2006 1:43 am
I turned off my WEP and it works! However I cant see anything other than the chat box and keyboard so someone has to IM me first. But hey, it works so thats cool. Any idea why it only works when my WEP is off?
#96249 - Primetime00 - Wed Aug 02, 2006 2:13 am
Okay,
I have another version available (0.01d) ONLY for the people having problems the sign on process hanging on "Logging into AIM."
I'll work on the other problems next.
This release will give the user detailed status about the log on. Please post which step you notice the freeze on.
This version uses the most recent version of the wifi lib, hopefully that fixes the problem.
(There is a very good chance this problem is due to the wifi lib)

Works for me now! Great work. Oh yeah, one of my buddies on my buddy list shows up as "::::smelly", I think it has something to do with a buddy comment I stored for him.
#96251 - picto-chat predator - Wed Aug 02, 2006 2:27 am
It says "logging into AIM..." and then it says "resolving host.." and then it says "could not resolve host..."
This is with my WEP on btw. I can connect fine without WEP, only all I can see is the chat window and the keyboard.
This program rocks thanx for the fast updates!

tsunami0ne: That helps, I that might solve the problem the others are having too, I will have to add some buddy comments and see what happens.
picto-chat predator: Any clock? Does the R trigger show the buddy list?
marzxbarz: Usually if it freezes here, it is waiting for AIM to send your buddy list to you. Are you able to sign on AIM express?
Anyone: If any of you can donate a dummy sn/password that consistently freezes on login, that would help my debug process.
-Ryan
#96265 - picto-chat predator - Wed Aug 02, 2006 5:06 am
Without WEP enabled the program works perfectly (the shoulder button DOES bring up the budddy list, doh!). With WEP enabled, i get "can't resolve host".
This is shaping up to be "the" dsaim :)
#96267 - marzxbarz - Wed Aug 02, 2006 5:37 am
Yeah, I'm able to sign onto AIM Express with the accounts that freeze on dsAIM.
#96303 - Sith - Wed Aug 02, 2006 12:45 pm
Not sure if you wanted me to repost, but I figured I would just to be safe. Still freezing for me between initial screen draw and any login or config windows popping up.
#96326 - Kung Fu - Wed Aug 02, 2006 4:42 pm
Primetime...you asked for a sn that didn't show. phyreboi101 is one. And not thats it's important (i dont im people on their phones anyway....) but all names on mobile devices do not show.
Thanks again for the awesome program.
#96327 - Primetime00 - Wed Aug 02, 2006 4:46 pm
Kung Fu: Thanks, so I take it this name is a mobile user too? Do you have any comments or phone numbers stored under this name?
#96329 - Kung Fu - Wed Aug 02, 2006 4:52 pm
Yes it is. It seems like all names signed to a cell phone as well as a computer dont show. Anf by comments...you mean messages...sorry I'm a bit confused.
#96337 - Primetime00 - Wed Aug 02, 2006 6:25 pm
Sorry, in Gaim, you can give each username a comment. Also, I added the username you gave me to see if I have the same problem with the name not showing up, but it does still show up. Approx how many people are on this buddy list?
#96488 - Kung Fu - Thu Aug 03, 2006 3:57 pm
hmmm.....65-70. The name might have been signed on to a computer only then. Like i said i think it only happens when people are on cell phones or other mobile devices. Not really a big deal.
#96495 - Primetime00 - Thu Aug 03, 2006 4:24 pm
Alright, I'll have to keep looking to see what comes up.
I think I fixed the problem with screen names showing incorrectly in the buddy list and chat list window. I'll put that in the next debug release.
I've also tried a buddy list with around 250 people in it. I'm still able to log in and get the whole list. I'm having a hard time reproducing the problem of freezing on login.
I might release a version that won't wait for the buddy list to arrive before logging on. This way everyone should be able to log in fine, but might not have a buddy list until AIM sends it and the DS receives it.
For people that are having the freezing problem in the beginning or before the login screen draws... I might release a wifi client that DSAIM can talk to so that you can see where the freeze is occuring. If you are having this problem, and know how to run a windows program from the command prompt, let me know and i'll send you the software (in a few days)

Still freezes at "Logging in to AIM". I have a buddy list with some phone numbers and comments.
Your program is still better than AIM Express, which doesn't seem to work at all, for any screen name.
#96600 - Primetime00 - Fri Aug 04, 2006 2:41 am
ssj4android: have you tried the 0.01d version? it will give you details of where it froze.
I'm using the same servers as AIM Express, so if that is down, DSAIM should be down too. Who knows...
#96701 - ssj4android - Fri Aug 04, 2006 8:54 pm
It freezes on the third "looking for config"
#96713 - Primetime00 - Fri Aug 04, 2006 10:08 pm
yeah, the third waiting for config is usually when DSAIM is waiting for a buddy list to arrive. Either AIM isn't sending it, or DSAIM isn't receiving it. If DSAIM isn't receiving it, then it might be a problem with the wifi lib.
*Unfortunately*, every name I use to sign on receives the buddy list...
If any of you know how to use WinPcap and WinDump, you can see if the buddylist data is coming in... If so, wifi lib just isn't picking it up for some reason.
I'll keep working on it.

ive tried both but cant get it to load.

#96750 - tepples - Sat Aug 05, 2006 5:19 am
In almost all cases, installing homebrew involves drag and drop. Some apps (e.g. MoonShell) come with their own setup programs that generate the correct files directly on the CF card.

Hey Primetime00, this program TOTALLY ROCKS! It doesn't work when my WEP is on, but otherwise, it's almost perfect. I know it's been requested a zillion times, but keyboard keys that light up would be most helpful. Keep up the fantastic work! How much longer do you think until we get another update?
#97479 - Primetime00 - Thu Aug 10, 2006 2:27 am
pretty soon
I'm trying to fix a few bugs, although DSAIM works fine with my linksys router. Some problems could be caused by incompatible/low compatible routers. I'm trying to find other routers to try it on, but none are in my range.
Anyway, I'll have the keyboard flash the key in the next version.
#97504 - ssj4android - Thu Aug 10, 2006 5:05 am

Primetime, I don't know if you've figured this out already or not (I don't want to read all the pages that have been posted since the last time i checked here) but all the the usernames that show up blank on the buddy list are the ones with comments stored for them (I believe). hope that helps.

This is what I was afraid of.
I'm hoping in the next dswifi, there is more compatibility with routers.
I'm going to try to put in a network setup in the next version, so you can scan for routers just like the dswifi lib test program.
I've put in a proper sign off procedure, away messages, keyboard lighting, and a few other misc things. I'll try to get another version out by the end of the month.

#98423 - schlomo_lives - Tue Aug 15, 2006 4:35 am
I hope this doesn't sound nit-picky, but I just wanted to offer suggestions that might help out the cause. This program rocks so hard. Could you possibly have a key repeat itself quickly when you hold down a button? It would make editing comments easier and quicker. If you really want to go nuts, you could also add a "End" button to skip to the end of the comment you've typed. Anyway, keep up the rockin' work
#98431 - Primetime00 - Tue Aug 15, 2006 5:45 am
I was thinking about doing something like that.
for example, holding left and hitting backspace will delete the previous word.
holding left and hitting the left touch button moves back one work, the opposite for holding right.
holding up and down will act as an end and home button.
Something along those lines anyway.

ive previously read that people are getting the black screen on top and white screen on bottom and it freezing when trying to load dsaim. i am getting the same thing.
is anyone else having problems loading the dsaim with ezflash4. any solutions?
some people told me to change it to .bin and some people told me to change it to NOR memory when loading gba.
i have not been able to get anything but the black and white screen.
any feedback would be awesome!

From what I've seen, this only boots off of flashcards that aren't NOR based. (E.G. the ones that use CF/SD, etc.)

Guys need to read the instructions that I've included. I worked so hard on that readme
#99191 - Gifted1 - Sun Aug 20, 2006 12:28 am
Seeing how this is the 1st development, this is pretty good. I don't need to list the problems because everyone else has done so. I can't wait till you make an update.
FYI I'm using the Passcard 3 and M3 MiniSD just in case you needed to know.
I would, however, like to cosign on the person that requested some control changing for us lefties lol. I know I can probably do without it but it would just make it a little easier. Like for instance, someone said when you hold down the L button, it is like pressing the SHIFT button. That's great. I would like to be able to change the controls so that i can press it on the R button instead. Just things like that. and to have a SEND button on the left side as well.
But it's totaly up to you. This is great so far for what it is. I can't wait for future updates. Thanks for working on this.

Not yet since I've only got my router to test on. Althought now there is a network setup built in so that you can try other settings. I don't know if that will help or not.
The login screen has a bit more wifi connection info in it too now. So you can see at which point the router does not connect or freeze. Mine freezes on authentication when I try to use other people's routers in my appt. I hope that higher router compatiblity is available soon.

Alright, here is my next version of DSAIM. DSAIM 0.02e
Thanks to everyone for the comments on the last release. I have one request... I've always refered to my project as D-SAIM. Not DS AIM.
Anyway,
Changes in this version that I can remember:
*Might of fixed buddy name displays. Maybe no more ::xxx names.
*Keyboard lights up. (Most of the time)
*Network setup (Press SELECT at login screen)
*IM users by inputting their names.
*Get buddy profiles.
*Set away messages.
*DS will set away message and power off screens when lid is closed.
*Proper sign off feature.
*UP/DOWN buttons scroll through buddy list.
*Fixed misc bugs
If you are stuck on something, make sure to check out the readme file first.
Grab it here http://www.ryankegel.com/download.php?dsaim=1
Questions / Comments are welcomed. If your feature isn't in here don't fret. I haven't forgotten and will work on them.
Hope you enjoy it,
-Ryan
#100298 - Gifted1 - Sun Aug 27, 2006 8:16 am
Great Job! I really love the feature where when you close the DS, your away message goes up.
I'm still playing with it but one thing I noticed is that when I press select and then choose to type in an away message, once I type in what I want the away message to say, there is no way to press the OK button. I've tried everything. Maybe someone else can get it to work. But otherwise, everything is great so far.
#100299 - Primetime00 - Sun Aug 27, 2006 8:19 am

With another screen name on your PC, add the bad screen name onto your PC buddylist. Then try signing on DSAIM again with the bad screen name and tell me if this name shows up on your PC buddylist before you get the error message. I'm not entirely sure it's signing on at all.

Yep, it shows it as signing in then signing right back off. And another account logs in fine. I'll test it later with a different AP. (Does the WiFi library connect to APs with SSID broadcasting turned off? Guess I'll find out)

im having trouble connecting to my wifi, the old version of dsaim works fine, as do all my wfc games, but with dsaim .02e it says "acquiring ip" then "failed to connect to wifi" each time i try to connect, im have tried all the different network settings. any idea why this isnt working now.
have:
ndsl
m3 sd
linksys wrt54gs
the router shows that my ds is connected in the dhcp clients table and is given an ip...yet the experiation time is only 60 seconds.

Those letters are so close together you can interpret it anyway you want. I prefer DSAIM with the pronunciation D-SAIM.

Not my fault you posted it late.
It still hasn't been added to the Homebrew Database, but I managed to make my OWN homebrew database and donwload it. now it won't launch on my m3.
Edit: now it works. yay!
just in case you hadn't noticed, the keyboard on the login screen still doesn't light up when you touch it, and the password still isn't masked. you should have the ability to unmask the password (since it's easy to make a typo on the touchscreen), but it should be masked by default.

Yes, I noticed that the keyboard didn't seem to be different when logging in.
I've had no problems other than that, all of my accounts work fine with it. Beyond saving the username/passwords for your account, this program is pretty much exactly what I was hoping for.
By the way, I too love the new feature of closing the lid to set Away, that's just brilliant

I also have noticed that the keyboard doesn't light up when on the login screen, but works fine otherwise.
Another thing I've noticed is that whenever I try to log in to AIM, it works up until "Logging in..." and then it hangs for about 30 seconds and goes back to "Press SEND to login...". I press send, and it logs in almost instantly. Not a major problem, and it may be a wifi thing, but thought you ought to know.

#101407 - Bkid - Tue Sep 05, 2006 4:26 am
It still doesn't work with Max Media Player 4GB HDD. Btw, the 4GB HDD is pretty much a Mass Storage Device, and (from my experience) all FAT support MUST be disabled to get anything to work on it. Many homebrew apps give the user that choice. I'm not really sure what the problem is, all I know is that I get no login screen at all, it just goes straight to the keyboard and two big white circle things at that top, where I guess the conversations are supposed to be. After that, it doesn't seem like I can touch anything. I hope you can fix this eventually.
#101410 - strongesthylian - Tue Sep 05, 2006 6:05 am
Everything's working great. I like the close-away feature. I'm still waiting for sound. Once it gets sound, I'll be using my DS for AIM a lot more.
EDIT: I also noticed that my SN with the buddy list full of commented friends is displayable now. Great work!
EDIT #2: One suggestion, when typing, make it on the release of the stylus to type things, instead of when pressing it. Say you put the stylus down, and then you drag it, the keyboard lights up following your stylus, but when you let go, it doesn't type that key. Does it make any sense?

I did this like 3 times and then tried to manually enter in the dns. well since ive done that, dsaim will start but then the top is just white. So then I erased it and reloaded the fresh copy on but the top is still white, I cant enter anything and the buttons and stylus does nothing *just in dsaim* I even tried deleting all my wifi configs from my other games just in case with no help. Some of the little bugs, like when you open your buddy list, sometimes an extra button is registered and it closes a millisecond later, could be fixed with timers so that you can't open or close the buddy list too fast. Stuff like that.

sailoranna: Strange, DSAIM does not do any writing to your card nor does it read it for any files. If you are having trouble at startup, it could be 1 of 2 things. Either its a graphical problem, or a network initialization problem. I'm working on the graphical problem, and maybe the new wifi release will help something. Look for a new version to come out soon.
molopo: will be fixed in the next release soon.
For anyone having trouble with connection in 0.2 and not in 0.1... I'm working on this, although the code seems to be the same as before, I'm not too sure whats causing this problem...

Has anyone gotten DHCP to work in DSAIM? It seems to only connect to my router at home. I seem to get stuck in authentication for all other routers. This is the same in the wifi lib test too.
I was just wondering if anyone has gotten DHCP to work on other routers that aren't your own.
Thanks

I am a huge AIM fan and after using it a ton at my house, and trying to connect at different places, here's my list of bugs, and stuff that should be changed (easy enough to do i'd think) for the next version....
Problems & Bugs
- If you put in your username and password, then go to the WEP setup, and go back, your username and password are gone
- When you put in the 128 wep or another box that is in the top screen, there's no way of sending the information (enter makes a new line, and send does nothing)
- After failing to connect to WiFi, the program just freezes, so you have to turn the system off and back on again
What should be added:
- Username and Password should be able to be saved
- Refresh AP list quicker
- Get rid of "Network Setup is Complete" screen.
- Instead of Send, Warn, Block... change the Warn and Block to one giant Send box (on the bottom), and on top where send used to be make that menu (aka the functions of hitting the Start button)

I was away during the weekend and was able to connect to a router using DHCP. I did have a problem of constantly disconnecting a few minutes after connecting, but it might have been because I was like more than 30 feet away from the AP.

Great app! I just found 01e earlier today, and then while my gf was playing princess peach, found that 02e had also been released.
Great improvements!
I just have a few suggestions about text input...it would be nice to be able to use the buttons to enter text. I'm imagining something like what they do for cell phones.
The 8 directions + neutral of the D-Pad point to the 9 number keys and Y, X, B select the first/second/third character (or use all 4 * 9 = 36 keys).
Also something like T-9 text prediction with a dictionary would be nice.
This is something that perhaps a lot of home brew apps could use, not just AIM.
Know anyone working on something like this, or anyone that would wanna give me a hand getting started (new to NDS development in general... but MS in comp sci).

But which key would you assign to each direction+button? And how would you represent this keyboard on the screen? If you don't know how to prototype this on the DS, then you perhaps could prototype it on Microsoft Windows using a USB joypad.

This is how I see a normal cell phone keypad
Code: |
1 2 3
.,@ abc def
4 5 6
ghi jkl mno
7 8 9
pqrs tuv wxyz
|
and here is how I see the DS controller
so the Y X A match up with the 1st/2nd/3rd character of each direction ( B can be used if there are 4 characters or as a dedicated space bar)
so if you wanted to type
hi, you'd hold left and press X then A
if you wanted to type
bye, you'd hold up and press X, down+right and press A, up+right and press X
tepples wrote: |

Draw a 9 key button instead of a keyboard but in the same spot. This would be touch sensative and also be highlighted when the directional pad is pressed (one press for first letter, two presses for 2nd, ect). In addition to the 9 keys, there can be a few buttons to switch touch modes (Alpha, Numeric, Auto Complete), just like the options you have on a cell phone.
tepples wrote: |

Great idea...but I was up until 5 am this morning learning about DS programming and I think I have enough info to write up a simple test app!
#107917 - tepples - Fri Nov 03, 2006 3:03 am
You're talking about something like this, right? Control Pad moves the circle; Y, X, A, and B (or two diagonally for letters q and z) press a letter. I'd assume that one presses L to switch in and out of this mode, or perhaps to shift, or something like that.

I'm able to compile the code from the examples, such as hello_world.nds and touch_look.nds, but I can't figure out how to compile the D-SAIM code. If anyone can lend a hand, please PM me, thanks!
I'm hoping to add a scroll bar to D-SAIM, so once I get things compiling, I'll start workin.

im having a problem with dsaim that im not sure i had before...i have to use the static ip setup (because the auto one doesnt seem to work in the .2 (did in .1)) and now i have to go through the set up each time i try to log in...even if i go through it..log in..then sign out (not closing the program at all) and try to sign back in it just gets stuck on the "acquiring ip address". im using a ds lite with a linksys wrt54gs. is there a way to save it? its a pain to type all the ip, gateway, dns stuff each time i wanna log in

a long time ago, i read that you can login to your ICQ-account via DSAIM.
is this true?
#113739 - Sektor - Sat Dec 30, 2006 6:12 am
DSAIM works with ICQ. I was able to see my contact list and chat with users.

i just tried it out.
as user-name, i entered my ICQ-number and then my password, but i got an errormessage.
how to connect to icq?
#113843 - Sektor - Sun Dec 31, 2006 6:53 am
You enter your ICQ number in the username field and your ICQ password in the password field. If you get an error, it's probably a network configuration problem.

oh lol ok, i entered the wrong password.
after the connection is successful, it doesnt tell me that fact.
nothing was on teh screen, so i thought it cant load the contact-list or so  i assumed that the small list next to the "send/warn/block"-buttons is the contactlist, so i waited until it shows me all users there xD
by accident i pushed the L-button and discovered the contact-list and found out that the small windows is the "open-sessions"-list...
kewl.

any chance of a new version with DSWIFI 0.3c implimented? maybe this will solve the unworking auto connect to router on ds lites?

Hey primetime, thanks again on a great app. Could you implement DLDI on the next version, or possibly just as a quick fix? I'd love to run this on my R4.
Thanks again.

any reason why i cant connect, i get the acquiring ip for about a 1min then, just goes to failed to connect, only once i did get farther, but i was sign in failed, and is was because why info was wrong, but i cant even get to the error anymore i have no issues with connecting in games, at all, btw i chose the dhcp all the all, i dont have all the static info to type in, besides is the app asking for static the wap ip,dns/gateway?? if so i typed it in, and i dont have any dns's so what do put there?
UPDATE! I ALMOST CAN CONNECT WITH THE STATIC BUT I GET CAN NOT RESOLVE HOST WHY?
#118118 - dantheman - Sat Feb 10, 2007 6:15 am
DHCP usually doesn't work too well in homebrew, so you're going to have to figure out the static settings. I would recommend you go into your official WFC settings and change it from Automatic to manual. You can usually find the correct info either from your router's administration page or by typing "ipconfig" at a command prompt. The IP can be anything you like as long as it's within your network. For instance, my PC is 192.168.1.100, so for my DS's IP I chose 192.168.1.125. Subnet Mask you can find on your admin page (mine is 255.255.255.0), and Gateway is your router's IP address.
DNS servers can usually be found on your router's administration page, though sometimes it might work if you just type in the IP address of your router itself. It works for me at least, though I generally prefer to use the actual DNS IPs.
Alternatively, if you have a new DS Lite, you might not be able to connect at all due to a change in the Wifi hardware. DSAIM would need to be recompiled with the new WIFI library to fix this.

I cant get it to work. I have wifi and it works. (I just checked it with Animal crossing) I type in my screen name and password, then click send and it says its connecting to wifi but then it gets stuck there and i end up having to turn it off. I really want to get this to work because it would be the koolest thing ever.
#119407 - superflanker - Thu Feb 22, 2007 8:00 pm
is there a way to get it to work in the max media player without putting it in the root file place because i would like to get to my max media player selection screen thing.
suggestions
- blind the pass so it looks like *****
-a memory thing so you can have it remember you're sn and pass
- make it so the d-pad can navigate the keys and the a button as like selecting the letter
-the warn and block keys dont seem to work either
-can you have it so it shows buddy icons

Hi,
the programme is great, good job.
But it only words for me, if I deactivate the WEP code.
I tried to use the firmware settings, but it stucks at "Logging into AIM" -> "ERROR could not resolve host"
In games and with BeUP (the MSN tool) it works.
I set the WiFi connection (firmware) manually, not using the DHCP host.
(I have a second WiFi connection saved in the firmware, maybe I should delete this? It's the same, but using the DHCP).
If I take out the WEP pw it works without problems.
An other thing is the keybord...I miss the buttons very often or rather more it does not give me the letters I hit...
Greetings
Edit: I forgot: I use a M3 Simply, connecting with an new FritzBox.

-Sign On Login like AIM:
SN: [ uzumakixnaruto ]
[ ] Remember Me
-Masking PASSWORD
[ xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ]
[ ] Save Password
[ ] Auto Login
[SIGN IN] button
And When it's connect you should have a BUTTON that says:
[BACK]
------
-Sound for IMing
-Smilies
-AIM Icons
-Aim Bots
-Sign Off Option [Sign Off] Button
------
[eye] Hide Button (invisible mode)
[Set Away] Button
------
When Logged On:
Your Name (status >Online, Offline, Away, etc...)
--
BUDDY LISTS
--
Now If This were set up like this, I think it would be better than BEUP, even though some ideas were taken from it.... But Still AIM like this on the DS would be Supur. ^_^

Sorry guys, I've been busy.
I have a new build ready that will finally save usernames, passwords, and configurations. It will also include the new DSWIFI library. My only problem is that for some reason it does not seem to be working on the DS Lite units. I do not have a lite, although I know a few people that do. So my testing for fixing that issue is coming along slowly. I will try to get it out ASAP.
I'm also working rewriting the AIM code so that it uses oscar instead of toc2. This will add some feature that are not available in toc2. I also plan on redoing the GUI. Hopefully, there will be a nice GUI lib complete by the time I start this. I'm not big on writing GUIs.
tepples: I saw this yesterday. I've been using gaim for years, and I don't think I'll be calling it something else. As for DSAIM, until AOL makes an IM client for the DS, I don't think I have anything to worry about.

DS lite, R4 1.08
It loads up just fine, allows me to put in username/passwd, but then just sits there hanging
from the readme, this seems to indicate that it's not connecting to the router.

Success with commercial games is not a good indicator of whether homebrew will work or not, as the homebrew Wifi library is a bit more picky. For instance, it works best with manual settings applied, not automatic, and homebrew won't work with the Nintendo USB Wifi dongle without driver modifications. See the stickied Wifi topic in one of these DS forums for some more info.

Alright, DSAIM 0.03e is now out. Here are the following changes that I can remember:
http://www.ryankegel.com/download.php?dsaim=1
* Recompiled with newest devARMkit and dswifi 0.3d
* Compiled for DLDI
* Hitting up or x simulates the shift key
* Hitting left or y simulates backspace
* Hitting right or a simulates the return key.
* Custom network settings are now saved in /DSAIM/DSAIM.CFG
* Accounts are saved in /DSAIM/DSAIM.ACC
* Saved accounts can be scrolled through using the up/down or x/b keys
* Password fields are now hidden.
Make sure you use the correct DLDI file so that writing to the flash device works.
Hopefully it fixes some of the problems you all have been having.
Enjoy,
-RYan

Quick request: could you make it use /DATA/DSAIM/* instead, or have it check that directory as well? Using the /DATA/ folder is nice as it helps declutter my root folder.
My miniSD card seems to be giving me issues right now. I launched the program and it immediately locked up. I can't run chkdisk until I reboot for who knows what reason. I'll get back here in a few minutes.
EDIT: Yeah, can't get it to work on a Supercard miniSD. I've tried placing it on the root directory, patched with SCSD.dldi (and I tried SCSD_moon.dldi when that failed, which usually always works). I also tried it on my other miniSD card with no difference. I also tried creating a /DSAIM folder manually in case it needed that.
The basic issue is that it doesn't show me the login screen. It shows me the IM window screen as if I had already logged in, and it then freezes completely.
#127797 - Primetime00 - Sat May 05, 2007 2:00 am
I'll look at that, I've done most of my testing on M3 CF and M3 Micro SD. Both seem to work on that.

Edit: Found two of three versions under the same link now.
Sorry Ryan,

Tried both the normal (DLDI-patched) and NOSTORE versions here, both on an R4DS and a SuperCard CF.
All freeze with the normal keyboard/text-input screen on startup, and don't show the login screen at all.

It must be a build in 'Nintendo anti homebrew chip'....
I have the same trouble with DSMail. The very first time it runs very well, I could send and receive my emails without any problem. But if I tried it again the day after nothing happened.
I've tried everything to restart it; cleared the save file, reinstalled DSMail, changed the mail boxes as well as the providers.....
Since that day I am not able to send emails with it anymore.
It's a pity!

So, my M3Simply has yet to run it, and I'd like NOT to use my GBAMP as I save that for older libfat programs.
Anywho, it seems to be an issue with either the libfat initial command, or something to do with the login screen, as that is where it crashes for most people.
EDIT: it is the main fatlib command, I checked my M3DSS's DSAIM folder. It's empty.

Very strange. I've tested on both M3 microsd and M3 CF and it works all the time for me. Later today, I'll release a version that will record a log of the startup so that hopefully I can see where it is freezing.
0.02e and 0.03e have the same startup code. The only difference is that it was compiled with the newest devARMkit, which is needed for the newest wifilib. This is why I couldn't just add the new wifilib to 0.02e.

I am using:
WRT54G Router
DS Lite
R4DS
After the DSAIM.nds kept locking up when I tried to save my network settings I began to use the NOTSTORE one. After a half an hour or so of tinkering with the network settings I got it to go to Logging Into Aim from that point it is still going to ERROR: Could Not Resolve Host??
#128153 - dualscreenman - Wed May 09, 2007 1:16 am
I'd like to see the D-pad used for menu form navigation.
It seems a bit silly to have to use an on screen arrow pad when teh DS has one built in. :/
Great work.
Confirmed working on my DS Lite with a SuperCard CF. (After manual network configuration.)

i can log in but then it seems to be frozen, the buddy list won't come up when i hit the R button
also sometimes it says that AIM has disconnected immediately after i log in
i also sometimes get "error: connecting too fast. try again in 10 minutes" even after waiting over 10 minutes.
i'm using a dslite, m3 simply
there are no problems with the wifi

basically it'll let you see all the wifi networks near you, and let you attempt to connect to them
if it fails, it'll tell you exactly what part is failing

#128224 - Tikker - Wed May 09, 2007 8:52 pm
what part is failing tho?
is it the encryption on the AP that you're not inputting?
if the router has WPA turned on, you're dead in the water
if it's WEP, then you just need to input the proper key
if it's wide open, it's probably the DHCP transaction that's dying. try a static IP within the proper subnet

From AIM (AOL) I could connect to buddys at ICQ.
Is this possible with DSAIM, too???

it's not actually AIM to ICQ tho I don't think
I think it's like trillian, where you associate an ICQ account with your AIM messenger, and you're really going icq to icq, but from within your AIM messenger, if that makes sense
#128353 - Dood77 - Thu May 10, 2007 11:01 pm
No I don't believe its just Trillian, I think AOL and ICQ made some kind of a deal.

Okay, I figured out my mistakes were simply when I was inputting my information in.
If you are having trouble connecting like me, try this:
Hit Select and Choose Your Router,
Go To Your Computer, RUN and type in the following,
cmd /k ipconfig /all
then Find IP ADDRESS, you are going to change the last number,
knowing I don't have more then 3 connected to my network i changed my number from 1 which my computer was using to 5.
Then below that lists the subnet mask, default gateway, and the DNS.
I hope this helps even a single person.

AOL owns ICQ
but try this
get someone with AIM that thinks they can talk to an ICQ client
have that person run trillian
the incoming "buddy" comes in as an ICQ client, not an AIM client

Hey guys...
I got DSaim running, and the log in screen comes up but I still can't connect, I tried both dsaim.nds and dsaim_nostore.nds.
Heres what dsaim is saying when trying to connect using the network settings from firmware.
searching for wifi...
Acquiring IP...
Failed to connect to Wifi.
Now when I run Wifi_lib_test.nds it says:
sgIP_DHCP_Start()
ARP: request IP 0401A8c0
ARP: request IP 0101A8c0
and then the lower screen says cannot connect to access point.
I know its not dsaim giving problems, cause I can't connect using the Wifi_lib_test.nds either.
The hardware I'm using:
Newer DS-lite
M3-Simply 1 gig micro sd (v1.03)
Linksys wireless G router
Network settings:
broadcasting on channel 10
Automatic Configuration - DHCP
Wireless SSID Broadcast : enabled
Mac address set up for ds-lite (Which I double checked)
WEP 128 bit security (Which I double checked)
I can connect for regular nds games... but can't connect to DSaim or other homebrews. Hopefully someone knows whats going on, cause i don't, hah
thanks
viggen
#129256 - dantheman - Mon May 21, 2007 3:26 am
First off, make sure your router isn't in "G only" mode, as the DS can only understand B or a B+G mixed mode. Also, make sure that you're using manual settings to connect, as homebrew has a very hard time with DHCP. Official games don't have this issue.

I'm using the SoftAP method as well to turn my (Buffalo) Nintendo WiFI USB Connector into an access point.
I've got everything set up correctly, and I've tested the ICS with a separate computer to make sure it was working (it was).
Using Wifi_lib_test.nds I can see the access point and connect and configure to it just fine. It accepts my settings, sees the network, says "Connected", and lets me perform all of the queries, returning the correct results each time (such as for DNS query, it correctly returns the IP addresses of any website).
When I boot up into DSAIM and try to use the same settings every time I try to log in I get "ERROR: Could not resolve host".
Any suggestions? Other than wifi_lib_test are there any other good homebrew programs I should try to test connectivity?
EDIT: Also, I've tried using both ICS and simply just bridging the connections under the network options. Both give the same results.
#129382 - zanetheinsane - Tue May 22, 2007 6:45 am
Well I "fixed" the problem. And by fixed I mean if I set my firmware Wifi settings manually and use that DSAIM and IRC work fine. If I manually set it through DSAIM it doesn't work
Better than nothing! Guess I'll just have to carry around a DS cart with it for now.

I've got a brand new DS Lite and M3 Simply w/ Sandisk 2GB microSD. 0.03e boots up fine (both .nds versions), but can't get either version working. The regular version seems to hang whenever I try to log in (stops at "Searching for WIFI", right green status LED on DS light is blinking), or after saving any network settings. The NOSTORE version seems to work a bit better, in that it doesn't hang after saving network settings, but it still hangs just after I send my AIM login info ("Searching for WIFI").
I've tried both no WEP and 128-bit WEP (I've confirmed WFC works fine with a regular cartridge). Have also tried static IP, DHCP, and getting network settings from firmware...all methods result in same symptoms for both .nds versions, that is, it hangs after I send my login info, with message "Searching for WIFI" shown.

I have a CycloDS evolution and I am having trouble running DS Aim. It always hangs at the "login successful" screen. I solved a router problem (ds and wrt54gc do not like each other), but I still get the problem. DSAim is in a folder which is in the root of the MicroSD card. Should I put DSAim directly in the root? I found that NDS_NOSTORE works using firmware wifi settings, but the cart I have should be able to patch DLDI on the fly. Anyone have any suggestions? I've tried using hand-inputted settings as well as using firmware settings. Hangs at "login successful".

I can't get it to work, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm using an old DS with a Max Media dock with a 2GB flash card. When I try to log in, I get a message that says "Failed to connect to WIFI". I'm using a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, so maybe that's why? Is it possible to get this program to work with that?
#132700 - dantheman - Thu Jun 28, 2007 8:23 pm
You'll have to install modified drivers to turn your Wifi dongle into a softAP before homebrew will work with it. See the stickied "troubleshooting Wifi problems" thread in the DS Misc. section for more info.
#132771 - pleathr - Fri Jun 29, 2007 6:41 am
i was able to get it working on my R4.
i downloaded dsaim from the first post of this thread.
patched it from the stuff here: http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI/
pressed select, selected my AP, which is my computers wireless card. my computer gets internet though ethernet and then shares it via wireless. it was a pain to get this to work through a game, but dsaim worked easily through dhcp.
it works. i can send messages.
my buddy list doesn't show up though. is it supposed to? once i send a message the name stays. never mind, i should have hit all the buttons. R reveals the buddy list.
#132863 - rpc9943 - Sat Jun 30, 2007 6:21 pm

America Online, or Microsoft.

I wish someone would port Gaim to the DS :) It has all the protocols in one, and it's open-source, but probably too big to port :(
As for the bigger evil, there is one evil and one stupid. The evil will be evil, and AOL will be stupid. We used to have AOL dial up, and it was horrible...you couldn't use anything, the AOL program was slow, and it persisted on installing needless junkware on your computer.
But, there is one thing AOL did right, AIM. It's the most widely used IM protocol out there, even though it's not as good as say, Yahoo or MSN, it's still the most used.
As for DSAIM, it's awesome. One thing I don't like is that the top screen isn't used to full potential. You have the message crammed in and a border on the screen. A tip on making applications: functionality over looks. If it looks good but the looks interfere with the functionality, reduce the looks to improve the functionality...so minimize the border size and allow more text at a time. Also, a smaller font (like the DSOrganize IRC font size) would be good, it'd allow more text on the screen.
I think a good interface would leave the whole top screen for messages, and you could see the message you're typing on the top of the lower screen, remove the on-screen D-pad (use the hardware D-pad instead), and assign the user list to a button (have it fill the bottom screen, or use small tabs (like in Gaim or PictoChat).
Ah well, even with the current interface it's a great app.

Well, when I actually do manage to connect, it's still getting stuck at the Login Successful screen even though I've patched it.
I've got a Slot-2 SuperCard with MiniSD on my DS (not DS-Lite).
Little help?
Edit: I've tried the dsaim_nostore file as well, but it keeps giving me "failed to connect" (which the other file does about 70% of the time). Even if I did manage to connect with it, it wouldn't be worth having to input ALL my info four or five times just to connect once. It's tedious and time-consuming.

I've noticed that when I unzipped the file into my MicroSD card and put it onto my R4, there are 2 DSAIM files. One simply named "DSAIM" and the other with a longer name which I forget, but it starts with DS and has AIM in it. Now the strange thing is, when I try to login using "DSAIM" it freezes after I connect, but when I login using the longer named one, it works perfectly. Maybe this might be of help to some, I don't know.

There's DSAIM and DSAIM_NOSTORE.
DSAIM requires a DLDI, and if you don't patch it, it crashes. It uses the DLDI to save files with your username and password.
DSAIM_NOSTORE does just what its name says, it doesn't store information, thus it doesn't need DLDI and won't crash if you don't patch it.

Do you really need an official WFC enabled game to be able to get wifi related homebrew to work?
Or can I use one of the roms on my M3 to change the settings?
#139082 - calcprogrammer1 - Sat Sep 01, 2007 6:25 pm
You need a WiFi game (MKDS, etc) to setup WiFi configuration. A ROM might work for this though, but it'd be illegal to do so. I recommend using a real card, since it does modify the firmware.

A: Are you using the latest version (0.3e I think)? If so, are you using the normal (DLDI required) or nostore (no DLDI required)? If you need to patch it, do so.
B: Are you using a new DS Lite? If you are, set your router to channel 10, this helped my friend's DS Lite connect using DS AIM.

#141780 - calcprogrammer1 - Sat Sep 29, 2007 8:48 pm
Could Not resolve host may refer to it not being able to connect to your router, the Internet, or AOL's server. Make sure your router is online, that your Internet connection is working, and that PC can connect to AIM. Also make sure the DS connects to the router in another homebrew, then try again. Sometimes my silver DS phat won't connect, but just retrying usually fixes it.

Like, you just had to mention, like, you're an alpha tester? Like?
AFAIK noones working on DSAIM atm, as it works. If Microsoft change something and it breaks then someone might come along to fix it. If you really, really wanted the features you just listed to be put in (like), then you could offer some kind of bounty or reward.

Is it possible to use DSAIM with the Nintendo USB Wi-Fi Adapter? My roommate just tried it and it didn't work - it just froze.
Any suggestions?
Oh, and my school campus is all wi-fi. Is there any chance that I could connect to that while i'm in class, like how people connect to it with their laptops?

Yes, but you'll have to make the Nintendo Wi-fi Adapter into a soft AP (access point).

Thank you!!
And what about using my school's wi-fi? Is that possible?
I guess I could just try it and find out but I'd like to hear someone's 2 cents on the issue or if it's ever been tried before.

You can do so if 1. it's open or WEP (not WPA), and 2. either it doesn't use a MAC whitelist or you can get your DS added, and 3. it doesn't use a captive portal.

aw bummer. it is WEP but there's a captive portal. when you first plug in your computer to their shit, it makes you install a bunch of junk. :(
edit: trying something different but it's asking for a WEP key... is that unattainable?
#143073 - tepples - Tue Oct 16, 2007 3:49 pm
If you know the WEP key, you can put that into the DS Wi-Fi settings.

#144872 - IHaveCrayons - Thu Nov 08, 2007 6:31 pm
Hey guys. I've been successfully able to connect with DSAIM using the static IP configuration. Shortly following the "Login successful" prompt the keyboard is shown and it freezes. A lot of people say the solution to this is to patch with DLDI, which I did. I noticed many people still had this problem even when they DLDI patched or ever running the NOSTORE version.
So in order to understand why I tried a few steps.
I was able to successfully login under a different screenname. DSAIM was fully functional. I was able to IM, receives IM, look at my buddylist etc... so what was the difference? I was able to login with one SN but not another.
The difference was my main SN, the one that froze up, has 200 buddies on it not to mention about 384 recent buddies which the server continually tells me is over the limit. The other SN had about 20 buddies.
What I am guessing is that SNs with a large amount of buddies freeze DSAIM.
#145224 - dxmkrew - Mon Nov 12, 2007 10:42 pm
i've noticed the buddy list thing, too. i've been having a lot of problems logging in. originally i couldn't login on my AOL screen name, which i've had forever. not AIM, AOL. i get an error saying AOL automatically logged me out or something.
then i tried it with an AIM screen name i hadn't toyed with. new buddylist and everything. that logged in fine. i IMed a bot and got a reply and everything.
i took the buddylist from my AOL screen name, using the buddylist save option, loaded it in AIM, and tried to log into my AIM screen name again on my ds. this time it just froze after claiming "login was successful..."
so i went in and i deleted all the groups, to see if the amount of people on the list was the problem. i attempted to login and No, not the issue. even with no one on my buddylist the screen froze.
so i created another AIM screen name and this time i just added 14 of my friends, all people i talk to. i didn't delete any groups on the default buddylist or anything...i left all the bots. didn't screw with the settings. now it is working again...
this is bizarre-o. there is no rhyme or reason to it. my suggestion is, if you can't log on to your default screen name...create a new AIM screen name, don't alter the buddylist in any way other than adding buddies (try to keep it to a minimum), and see if you can login that way.
#145250 - dxmkrew - Tue Nov 13, 2007 4:11 am
i've noticed that i can't set up an away message and the "add buddy" option on the buddylist doesn't work. for the away message, i can open the screen, but when i go to click the button to switch down to the "ok/cancel" buttons nothing happens and i have to reboot the ds.
the add buddy button simply doesn't work. the "send IM" and "get buddy info" buttons work fine, though.
i should probably mention that all of this is happening on an R4.
#146180 - smnaotrt - Fri Nov 30, 2007 2:52 am

I downloaded dsaim .03 i believe, on my gnm and it works great except that i cannot add new friends, and it occasionally loses connection for no reason. Is there a newer version that i can download or is there another way to fix these problems? Any help would be really appreciated.

Well the program sounds nice, though it never ever finds a network. Every other wifi homebrew I've used has no problems. With DSAim however, when I go to search for a network the list is always empty, and stays empty. If I choose to use one saved on firmware, the program hangs on searching for wifi.

I think it's something like pressing Shift+Down (arrow key on the keyboard, not DPad) rather than just Down, but it's been so long since I used DSAIM that I'm not entirely sure if this is correct.

Hey guys my DSAIM has been freezing as soon as I log into AIM. I've had this before with .01e, but when i upgraded it fixed it. Now all of a sudden DSAIM freezes like before. I've reformatted the card and it didn't work. I've used version .03e for the last six months without any problems until now. Help???

It would be nice if "AIM sounds" were added to the program so I would know when I receive a message.

#156619 - dantheman - Sun May 11, 2008 10:48 pm
Just the other day it froze for me at the "logging in to AIM" stage, where it got stuck for a few minutes before returning me to the place to input the username and password. I then tried last night and it worked fine, so I don't know what the problem was.
