Nice to see new drivers for the non-gbamp users, everything else seems minor, but this continues to be an amazing piece of homebrew.

Does this make use of the SClite's high-speed slot?

(Moved from 1.3 post to keep things tidy. I thought we had a Delete option here?)
Wow, the 1.4 beta has lots of nice little improvements :)
The Setup program is finally becoming worthwhile, as it can give previews of clock plugins.
There seems to be a shutdown sound now. Not quite right, as it only plays if I shut down by closing the lid, and I don't have that option turned on. Can software detect when someone presses the Power button?
I'm guessing not, but it would be great if it's possible. (I'm thinking that if it was possible, official software would put up a giant message and make an angry noise if it's saving when someone presses the power button, but nothing does).
Still a bit complicated, though.
Skin.ini seems to have disappeared entirely, so people looking to make skins will probably have to keep the file from an older version handy.
Having to run through Setup doesn't seem right.
Would be great to have the plugins and things immediately accessible instead of hidden within that file.
The new movie encoder is excellent!
And a random question:
How does the clock plugin "AnalogDot" work?
I thought the clock plugin system was too limited to do fancy animated elements like those falling dots.
I think it would be really cool to have a more fancy analog clock, so does anyone know where I can get the source to that one?

I mailed to G6 development team about G6 flashcards I/O library and they replied this:
Quote: |
Thanks for your support .
We know that there are many people waiting the Lib of G6 now .
It is sure that we will make the Lib of G6 .
But we are very busy now .
There are many problem , we need to fix it urgently . |
It is no news that they are busy.. maybe he means those saving/cart corrupting bugs? I have begged the lib for several months and they are always too busy. I think Nintendo will publish new portable console before they will release it (so sad).
Now Moonlight posted new text on his blog about G6 flashcart after my mail.. I have no idea if it does anything to do with my mail. Very bad English translation of Japanese by Google. I can not understand, bummer.
Oh, and:
Moonlight did it again, Progressive JPEGs are now supported! Wohoo!

first. what is progressive jpeg? second. im still using moonshell 1.0, i know there have been 40 versions since, as i keep up with it. is there any improvement in mp3 playback in 1.4 compared to 1.0??? also what other major improvements have been made that makes 1.4 worth getting. and yes i have been through the version history logs. the majority of it i dont even understand. also is the new DPGTools Ver 1.1 beta2 any better than the 1.0 version. once again i read the version history but stuff like
"CP932-3 (Fixed JPN font) was added.
ScrollType item was added to [TextPlugin] section of global.ini. It is for a full-page scrolling.
SelectDisplay item was added to [TextPlugin] section of global.ini. For select the top and bottom.
WhenPanelClose (2 = Play shell/shutdown.mp3 and DS POWER OFF.) item was added to [System] section of global.ini."
i mean... what does that even mean? anyway, thanks for any positive input.

Progressive JPEG is a JPEG image with the low frequency components (blurred image) stored first and the higher frequency components (detail) stored later.

Better MP3 play?, I'm not sure. Better video playback?, yes.
If you only need MP3 playback of MoonShell then you can stick with that oldie.. but if you need anything more, then download the latest MoonShell as (almost) all the others are improved.

New DPGTools v1.1 has nicer interface + drag&drop + better support for media files (several bug fixes I assume). It is Like Nero Burning Rom vs. Nero Express
WhenPanelClose (2 = Play shell/shutdown.mp3 and DS POWER OFF.) item was added to [System] section of global.ini.
** When you close the DS shell -> MoonShell plays shell/shutdown.mp3 -> DS power goes off **

Stuff encoded to 1.0 works. MoonShell uses ARM7 processor for Audio playback and ARM9 for Video. Audio/Video sync has been fixed/optimized several times. I'm not sure if there have been added new video filtering levels (check it out).
Also other video playback improvements that I can not remember, anyone?

I think I found a bug. When I set my videos to play on the bottom screen, the bottom screen went blank as if the video was playing on the top screen. However the top screen still displays the filesystem. And sound is still playing.

MoonShell v1.4 beta 2 is out.
It has (video) resume function.
Is it video pause state resume or something else?
I have M3 miniSD and it does not work. It does modify the resume.sav, but I can't see any difference compared to earlier versions.

Beta 3 is out:

Resume: Possible to write resume in M3SD.
Resume: The position is not preserved with DPG/GMV/AudioPlugin. Always becomes a restart from the head.
Resume: The bug that the expansion rate doesn't restore by ImagePlugin is corrected.
Resume: The file cursor was restored. |

EDIT:
I just got a Max Media Dock and am using the CF card from my GBAMP to try it out. I've noticed that none of the homebrew apps I have on it will launch from Moonshell directly. Some will launch and play fine from the Max Media Player app, but not from MoonShell. Has this always been the case with the Max Media Players? I know support for them is still in the early stages compared to most other flashcarts and adapters, but I was rather curious. Thanks.

Beta 1 and 2 work fine for me, but beta 3 always quits with the error message "Critical error!! CPU HALT for safety. Check 'shell/resume.sav' or retry setup.". Pushing the start button while starting, like described in resume.sav (it's a text file) doesn't help, unfortunately. I'm using a Supercard MicroSD with a 1 GByte Toshiba MicroSD card.
I also get a strange error message when trying to watch *.dpg files encoded with the new dpgenc.exe. It says "VideoOverlaySize setting error." and completely crashes Moonshell. This happens with all the videos I've converted.
Here's what dpgenc has to say about that video after encoding:
Code: |
Encode was completed.
DPGFilename=dmd-silenthill-sample.dpg
FileSize=1297188byte
beta version data
HeaderID:DPG0
TotalFrame=1450
FramePerSec=18,0000
TotalTime=80,5556sec(1,3426min)
SoundRate=32000Hz
SoundChannels=built-in mpeg1-audio-layer-2 (mp2)
AudioData=36->1297152byte
MovieData=1297188->0byte |
What puzzles me is the last line: "MovieData=1297188->0byte". 0byte? Sounds like it didn't convert anything at all. This happened with all the other files I converted, too. The preview window shows the correct picture, so DPGEnc seems to be able to decode the original XviD AVI.
Help would be appreciated, thanks in advance,
-- NorQue
[EDIT]
P.S.
btw, I *did* search before I posted, but the only reference to "VideoOverlaySize setting error." I could find didn't contain a solution to this problem.

To Infantile Paralysis,
Could you incorporate alite.nds into moonshell? This would help users who want to change brightness while watching dpg movies. Thanks for reading this and giving the idea some thought.
(I didn't know where else to contact him)

You mean to Moonlight. :)
Incorporating is possible, but where is the source code of alite.nds ?

Aren't there brightness settings in the global.ini file? Perhaps when Moonlight finishes his global.ini configuration tool, you'll be able to modify it from within Moonshell instead of doing it through some other text editor?

Hey, has anyone tried the "moonshell reset for supercard.nds" available from the Supercard download pages?
http://eng.supercard.cn/download.htm
It looks like there's also a patcher included with the latest software and firmware download packages, but I haven't tried it yet. I wonder how it works?

Reset sends you back to the Supercard menu.
Patcher is for sclite compatability.
Both work for moonshell as well as dsorganize.
#98341 - MechaBouncer - Mon Aug 14, 2006 8:03 pm
I'm guessing you just run it like any other app and it drops you back in the SC menu?
And does the "patch moomshell for super card.exe" only patch a specific file name or version of moonshell to work with the SC Lite?

well, rewind video works much better now. unfortunately, with beta 1 and 3 there is a very annoying bug. when i rewind a video to the beginning the video get stuck in the tuch screen along with the interface. the only way of bringing it back to the top screen is restart the system. simply qutting the video help nothing.

Do you have CF or SD adapter? Is it FAT16 or FAT32? Have you tried to defragment your card (move files to pc and back to card), that solved some problems with old mshl version when I only got 66x card.
I have SD and I haven't seen that bug with beta 3. Can you repeat the bug?

i got miniSD formated in fat32 and it got nothing on it except the video itself. the video was encoded using batchdpg. i tried couple of them. all suffer. from this bug. after rewinding the video back to the start (and i mean rewind, not starting it again or switching video) it get stuck in the lowest screen. this is weird.

Do the later Supercards support FAT32? I thought the Supercard CF and SD were limited to FAT16, but I don't know about the MiniSD and MicroSD (Lite) versions.

I just tried a video and 18FPS at 192kbps was no good (stuttering, froze up once, etc) but 15FPS at 224kbps worked great and looked better too. (I have a mega-fast CF card though. :p) Only problem is I can't figure out how to enable subtitles on a .ogm. I removed -noautosub from the command line but it didn't help. Normally I'd click the icon that comes up in my system tray when one of these is playing, but with dpgenc it only appears for a split second. o_O

Yah, 15 FPS works well.
Moonshell can pretty well sustain a full episode of The X-Files at 15 FPS and 208 video bitrate.
...I just can't hit Pause, because that seems to desyncronize it permanently.
(I suppose it's a side-effect of doing audio and video on seperate processors, and probably hard to avoid).

It's easy in principle to synchronize: just have the audio CPU report the current sample position since start of file, and then have the video CPU convert the number from samples to frames and slow down or speed up decoding (or skip GOPs) as necessary.

Well I tried every subtitle-related option in mencoder and nothing happened (except for mencoder not starting and the program hanging in some cases). I see no subtitle options in ffmpeg at all. Enabling them in the tray icon (which for some reason now stays even after dpgenc is closed) did nothing. Google found nothing. So again... how the hell do I enable subtitles? >_<

#98816 - tepples - Thu Aug 17, 2006 7:43 pm
By default, MoonShell works in a mode called "flexible" when the lid is closed: press L+R to go to the next track, or R+L to pause. This can be changed in the .ini file.

It works really well though.
I use 15FPS, 256-384kbps for video, 128kbps 48Khz mono for audio, no desyncs or skips at all (and I can pause/fast forward without losing sync). And I got my subs burned into the file. :P

You mean to Moonlight. :)
Incorporating is possible, but where is the source code of alite.nds ? |
I wrote a brightness demo and posted about it right here. It's really easy to use the header I wrote that encapsulates both arm9 and arm7 code. ;)

Well I'll keep it in mind but again, I'd really really prefer not to have to add .Net, especially just for one program. I don't mean to keep bugging people but I bought a 4GB CF card just so I could put movies on it, but the whole movie feature is useless to me if I can't select subtitles (or learn Japanese before the next handheld comes out). I don't have any English movies worth watching. :-/

Those really, really, really suck.
As while they dub them they sometimes rip out story stuff, or alter it all-together.
They replace the music, and give the characters comedic voices.
This VGCats comic describes it best.

Playing music through moonshell is quite noisy for me. Is this because its basicly comming out of the headphone out or is it a software issue?

I think it's more that the DS isn't the greatest for high-quality audio.

Touche.
Doesnt seem much point in making it an audio player with that in mind. Although saying that, its all Ive been using for my personal music needs recently, and I have a 40gb hard disk player.
#99137 - tepples - Sat Aug 19, 2006 7:21 pm
Darn right. If you already run homebrew, a 1 GB PNY memory card from $(OFFICE_SUPPLY_STORE) is cheaper than an iPod Shuffle.
Tip: Classical music has much more dynamic range than pop music. When encoding classical music, run it through a level compressor at 2:1. This will make the quiet parts louder so that 1. the DS audio DAC's -54 dB noise floor isn't as noticeable in quiet parts, and 2. you can still hear quiet parts over ambient noise.
Tip: When encoding any music, amplify it so that it shows up at -6 dB in Replay Gain.

There are also 4GB SD cards at the same price as CF cards. The downside is that SD cards are slower than CF cards. So CF cards are better at functionality, but they are not so portable. ;)
I wonder when some company comes with 4GByte Micro SD cards.

Yeah, especially when as in this case the movie in question is Card Captor Sakura. Eugh... Worst dubs ever.

I've noticed that at least some of the noise (especially in quiet sections) is due to dithering done by Moonshell (DSOrganize does it too, but not for modules). I wonder what dithering method Moonshell uses, it doesn't really sound too great.
And for that matter, what bit depth is the DS's DAC?
#99197 - tepples - Sun Aug 20, 2006 12:50 am
Nintendo DS audio output is a pair of 10-bit pulse width modulation DACs.

Hmm... Perhaps Moonshell doesn't dither at all (maybe lack of CPU power to do so) for streamed music, since the only output I could get that sounded like it was 10-bit with no dithering at all.
Thanks for the info.

If you have the .sav files (found in the "misc/Bookmark/" folder in the new versions of MoonShell) in your Shell folder, you can save a bookmark in .txt files by pressing R and selecting a save slot. Then you can load it by pressing L.

How does MoonShell work its audio in this version?
I was reading through the past posts and I think that it originally used a port of libmodplug, then libmikmod (experimentally, but it was kept because it seemed to work great), and then it changed again?

It only supports ID-3 Tag v1. It has no support for V2 so far. Try with MP3 files that has V1 ID-3 Tags.

Hi.
Well, it's 1.4 beta5 (i'm going to try now with the final beta). Everything else works fine. I noticed the lack of id3-tag window also on the previous version (beta4??).
I'm using Supercard SD. Don't know what the problem is...

Well... it's fixed now.
I was using one "Moonshell Vista" skin I found, and I didn't realize till now that the file info window was moved out of the screen in the skin.ini file.
Thanx anyway ;)

I'm having problems with the self contained . nds version (exfs for flashcart). When I set the default folder to MPCF as I always do with every previous version of Moonshell, it boots in and freezes. When I set it to auto, it boots in, but when I select the MPCF folder, it freezes. This is the final beta. Anyone know what the problem is?

I don't think so. :( Blame on M3/G6 development team as they haven't gave the source code to support it officially (with MoonShell).
Moonlight writes in his blog that he has tried to compile code with the Trial version of ADM (the full licence costs around $5971, that is so much, not fair) without luck. He thinks that the pre compiled library is made with another version of ADM of isn't working because it's made with the full version.

Why aren't SC drivers enabled? Didn't they work fine untill now? All 3 SC drivers are grayed out when I run Setup.
Then I read all these SC support posts but I can't really understand anything.
There is also a link that has an email, do I have to send an email to that address to recieve the patch or something?

I added the missing files. / Updated the package.
There are floating cloned SuperCard carts that are not supported with MoonShell. Please use only with REAL SuperCard.
How to identify the real one: http://eng.supercard.cn/
You need to copy the right file from the "files for SuperCard" folder to your card.
The files will be in the Setup on later releases.

Yes, the source is open.
G6 development team haven't gave the source to handle the G6 cart. That's the reason. All the G6 supporting versions have been compiled by G6 team and not Moonlight (the creator of MoonShell).
You can do something... mail to info@g6flash.com and ask for the latest MoonShell for G6 and also if they could provide the source code of G6 fat library to Moonlight. Some pressure for them to publish something that we need.

Yeah, I think it does that on every system, so that if it crashes there, you get an error screen, but if it has no reason to crash, it just continues normally and skips it.

It might be that the error message shows up for because SC is so slow.
Don't worry about the message if it disappears. If it stays, just follow the lines of it.
EDIT: Ok, I see the error message now. Actually that error should show up on all devices when starting and then it disappears. It's a normal behavior.

Hi ,
Thanks for your information & concern about our products .
We did our best to finish doing G6 /M3 lib for the developer.
But it is not suitable for all the developers .
In fact the lib we offered is similar to the lib from SC ,and their lib is also not source form.
This is completely understandable as there are several different types of flashcarts, each of which usually require a different build of moonshell due to read/write issues. T
hey need to spend more energy on revising software if supporting all Flash Cards.
But we heard that moonshell support for SC flash card has been dropped .
We don't really understand it due to I'm not a developer.
We had solicited opinions from many users.
I will discuss with our developers about related problems.
Regards
Danny |
Someone care to translate that to ENGLISH-english? :p

Danny mailed me, he said only "Thanks for your information" and nothing else. Misunderstanding solved, now the world is a bit better place to live on. :D

Bleh. Moonshell doesn't seem to support videos encoded with the QNS flag, they decode improperly.
I wonder if there's any way to contact Infantile Paralysiser and ask if it's possible to fix...

Just a little just correction.
As a single unit it does not move.
Obtaining it increased and increased and when using the [mu] [pe] [gu], it held down audio deterioration? It is it is, the intention of holding down.
When the [yu] - the [chi] [yu] - converting from the [bu], because it converts similarly, whether it becomes the different/[ku], is.
That? DL it is not possible? The money you paid, but it is,?. Still, perhaps renewal job is not ended. DL please do is from the mirror server. |

I think I found a small bug. When playing SPCs the first letter of the Artist field is missing.

Is it possible to install a font which supports kanji, or are the .fon files too limited for that? I installed Moonshell with the UTF-8 charset today, but the font only displays kana.

The DS firmware is 256K. The Chinese iQue DS firmware is 512K and contains all (or most?) Chinese characters. So it's possible to fit all those in ~256K, which means Kanji should be quite feasible.

I think he's talking about the Moonshell fontsystem, not the firmware font.

Yeah, I'm just pointing out that it shouldn't be a problem fitting the Kanji characters in memory.

Version 1.5 2006/12/03
Corresponded to EZ4/DSLink. I wish to express my deep gratitude to Rudolph.
'The cartridge of enhancing the memory of DS browser' can be used for the cache memory.
The resume item was added. (sound volume, reproduction mode, and NDSLite backlight brightness)
ResumeUsingWhileMusicPlaying item was added to [System] section of global.ini. The resume is preserved while performing the tune.
The DPG format was renewed. As for the DPG file made with a new encoder, seek is fast and the image doesn't fall into disorder either. Especially, it is remarkable in a long video.
Basically, it supports EZ4 and DSLink now, it can use Opera DS's RAM cart as external memory, you can shutdown and it'll remember the brightness, voluime level and playback mode (if you enable resume), and there's a new DPG2 format that supports fast seeking (which LS5 is attempting to figure out and implement in BatchDPG). dpgenc's quality still sucks though.

thanks for explaing man. btw, is there anyway to convert files to dpg using windows Me coz i noe the software only supports 2k and xp. T_T
#111178 - Firon - Mon Dec 04, 2006 5:51 pm
You really should upgrade to at least Windows 2000; it's miles better than ME.
I don't think you have a choice, because I don't think there's a .NET for Windows ME (so you won't be able to use BatchDPG either).
