Strange, I thought this was already on the DS. I'm probably getting confused because I already have the game on my Gizmondo, and had it on my PSP.

#118723 - compacho - Fri Feb 16, 2007 4:26 am

Looks pretty good so far. I'll definately keep an eye out for this in the future.

#118724 - tepples - Fri Feb 16, 2007 4:31 am

Duke 3D was on GBA.

Sorry for posting it in the wrong thread , but there was already been talked about duke3d in that forum, anyway Duke3d on the gba was crappy as hell

I believe it used the non updated doom engine , i'm sure it was not the official duke nukem 3d engine

So can you not include any duke3d.grp, even from the shareware version? The official site's download link is dead.

You should be able to find a .GRP file from somewhere. I personally have my GRP file from my Duke Atomic CD from years and years ago, but I do know that a shareware .grp is available on the internet if you look hard enough.

What's the difference, does the shareware version not include all the levels? I only played the N64 port. :-/

The shareware .grp includes only the first episdoe (LA Meltdown) which is only 9 levels and not all the weapons/enemies.

the shareware works fine.

Anyway 2 things :

1. the game runs verry slow on my sd card, is this because it's just a beta version or, does someelse has a almost normal speed?

2.when i'm going into the option, i've no way to go back

Those things could be because of the shareware versoin.

Anyway great work so far !!!

#122802 - Diddl - Thu Mar 22, 2007 8:23 am

on my ufpex speed is nearly normal but no sound.

if I stand near to a wall, turning around seems very slowly. use atomix grp file.

#123584 - Shadax - Thu Mar 29, 2007 9:04 am

Anyone know if it supports custom maps??

#123587 - OOPMan - Thu Mar 29, 2007 9:37 am

People wondering about speeds: I would imagine this is due to the renderer not being optimised yet and probably has nothing to do with the speed of your media/media device.

#123599 - Lazy1 - Thu Mar 29, 2007 3:03 pm

I would assume the speed issue is due to the engine rendering at 512x256 (or close to that), the real solution would be to modify the engine to render at 256x192 which is what I did for wolfenstein.

Of course the status bar is probably 320px wide so it would have to be drawn and scaled separately.

Lazy1 wrote:

could you do it also for duke3d? maybe you make a teamwork together? it would be so nice to play duke3d on NDS with a real good speed.

#123632 - simonjhall - Thu Mar 29, 2007 7:36 pm

I'm not too familiar with these faux-3D rendering engines, but couldn't all the '3D' transforms be done on the CPU and then the geometry engine be used just to push the actual (now-2D) polygons?
That's what I originally did for Quake - it went from 1fps to 10fps overnight! It did mean that texturing wasn't perspective-correct though.

Yes. See the "Polymost" version of the Build engine.

Re-writing the renderer to use the 3D hardware sounds a good idea. Unlike Quake, there shouldn't be any risk of reaching the DS polygon limit, since all enemies are sprites. 60fps Duke3D, maybe?

#123888 - Lazy1 - Sun Apr 01, 2007 5:07 am

I was talking with GPF a while ago about modifying the build engine to run at a native 256x192 resolution.
That project will hopefully begin once my builds actually work on hardware (assert that only I seem to get.

:/

Awesome, a game from the Golden Age of FPS's not these cookie cutter ones we have today. One of my favorite games of all time aside form DooM, I can still remember when I got it for my Birthday when it came out. :P Maybe this will convince my friends to get a SuperCard.

Excellent stuff i'll say! kudos for porting duke!

It's quite slow and imperfect, but i perfectly understand that for the project is in early stages.

I hope that you are successful in your future work on it!

There was actually quite a few "cookie-cutter" clones back in those days, too.

#135221 - Dood77 - Fri Jul 20, 2007 11:46 pm

I would say there were more cookie-cutter games then... While I'm not a huge fan of Duke Nukem 3D, I will say that no game has been matched by the original Quake. (Not that it's the best FPS, I stand by my opinion of Half-Life 2 being the best game of all time, but there have been no other games that were as much fun, in the same way as Quake.)

1. Input seems to be tied to the framerate, if you are looking at something complex the view will skip past it.
2. Sound is distorted

It might be a good idea to release the source, maybe other devs can take a few mins to hack at it. (like the doom port)

Not to mention that it's required by the license.

I got this to work on my Games n Music card, but it runs slow.....
I think it might be the Games n Music card is just slow hardware.
But maybe it's something else. My Version is 1.3D

I've not tried the latest build, but the one that came our right before it looked great, but the controlls were so sloppy I didn't even bother trying to play very far, I hope this improves upon that and makes it more fluid like the XBOX port!

As far as clones go, yes FPS' have been cloned since they finally gained mass popularity when Wolfenstein 3D came out (certainly not the 1st by any means). As for Duke it is no mere "DOOM" clone or what ever you want to call it as it and Shadow Warrior (might as well toss System Shock in there too), have brought FPS interaction to a level that really has remained untouched until recent years. Each enemy had a variety of ways in which they could die, nearly everything in the world could be interacted with in a real world way, vehicles could be driven, etc. And of course the potty humour was always silly too.

It's a shame we don't have Shadow Warrior, it's really a shame System Shock was never open sourced as it was MADE for the DS, but at least we have DUke and QUake, and that's a good thing! Now let's just hope that port of PrBOOM get's it's bugs worked out, of which I've found many while designing my new stand alone Star Wars iWad for it.

#149633 - Potent1 - Tue Jan 22, 2008 11:00 pm

Does anyone know what happened to GPFerror? He says his name is Troy, or GPF. He created the Duke 3DS. His website has been down for some time now. I was wondering if anyone knew what happened to him. And if there's going to be any more updates.

i sent him a PM on dcemu (where his site is hosted?) a few weeks ago but haven't heard anything back yet.

also, the nintendo-ds section of dcemu has been down for ages now. i keep asking on the irc channel how things are going, but it hasn't been fixed yet...

see, his latest version hosted on dcemu forums is a corrupted zip file or something, and so it's unavailable to download anymore.

#149655 - sonny_jim - Wed Jan 23, 2008 2:00 pm

GPF is still around, I speak to him in the #DSLinux chat room from time to time.

#149666 - Potent1 - Wed Jan 23, 2008 5:18 pm

I've already PM'd him. I don't know if it'll ever be answered, but could you ask about what's going on with Duke 3DS, sony jim?
