DS homebrew announcements > Phidias

#121309 - melw - Sun Mar 11, 2007 12:46 pm

I noticed there was no topic for this: Phidias, a drawing program for DS.

I've been waiting for something like this for quite a while - has same basic functionality as Davr's Draw with working GUI and some neat extras like alpha for pencils, two different pencil types etc. To put it short: splendid work, Tassu!

There's also a video available at YouTube.

Cool, but why .bmp and not .png?

PNG is slow.

Looks pretty amazing what you can do with it.
And since it has a slightly slower reaction time, there are no problems with stylus jumping, either. (I'm by no means an arteest, but that kinda always pissed me off when i doodled something in DSO)

How is it slower? You mean compression and decompression? But those are only on load or on save. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Unless your program has an autosave folder, such as if it supports multiple levels of undo.

That's a frame-buffer thing though, isn't it? The undo works fine for me, but I can't save (have tried both SD DLDI's and every FAT/FAT32 cluster size)..

New version Phidias out:
Site Link

Saving/loading works for me now - hooray!

Changelist per site:

New stuff in this version:
-Support different resolutions
-Loading and editing saved images (can not load images with too big resolution)
-Zooming with A/B-buttons
-scrolling with D-Pad
-Reset view with START
-Eyedropper tool
-Paint Bucket/Flood Fill tool
-Tools size is now on X/Y-buttons because D-Pad is used for scrolling
-Clear renamed to "New" and it now fills the image with white instead of selected color
-Undo is now also in SELECT-button
-Tools work much faster now but they might seem slower when using the biggest resolution

bmp is easier to code :)

Another new version is out, coinciding with its entry into the Neoflash comp.

Didn't find a changelist, but seems the main one is logo addition as well as additional selectable resolutions. Unfortunately, this one breaks saving for me.

You have to be registered to download it.

That's a shame, I was looking forward to trying this one out. :(

[edit] Thanks TheYak. This is a nice program, but is missing the one feature I'd most like to see in a DS drawing app. Maybe someday I'll hack together a quick version of one, but anyway... a pixel drawing mode. Zoom in, display a grid, and draw using either the stylus or a cursor (move with Dpad, draw with A/B). None of the brush/pencil-like effects, just setting pixel values directly. It should be pretty easy to do.

Also, are you doing scaling and scrolling in software? It's quite slow. The hardware provides convenient registers to do both of these (as well as rotation and shearing) transparently and with no speed loss, independently for each layer.

Blah, guess I'll have to register then :-(

Very nice apple, daninski. Now can you do a pear, a peach, an orange, two cherries (like in SMB2), and a coconut? :-)
