Been over a year since I studied at all, and I lost all my old flash cards. I've been wanting to practice, so this is the perfect app for me. Thanks!

Well it's awesome for those who don't know all of this yet. Thanks! I'll try it out tomorrow at work. ;-)

Very useful to me right now! I learned to read kana with flash cards, but with your little app I can learn to write it too, with the proper stroke order and all. Thanks a bunch.

Tip: Knowing kana makes Tetris DS opponents from Japan appear less intimidating.

Haha, I beat everyone on Tetris DS. Only a few people in the world can defeat me!

Well I tried it. It's very well done, but the interface is a bit confusing. I found two minor bugs: First off, if you get the answer wrong, it shows the correct character only very briefly; not long enough to get a good look. Generally if I'm mixing these up it's because they're very similar, so it'd be nice to have the correct character displayed until I touch the screen, and maybe the one I selected for comparison.
The other bug is ridiculously trivial: touching outside of a popup menu makes part of the keyboard disappear. :-p
This will kick all ass if Kanji is added. Will that ever happen?
(Heh, typed this post on my DS too. Still used my PC to submit it though...)

You mean like the katakana ン n vs. ソ so vs. リ ri, or hiragana は ha vs. ほ ho, or hiragana れ re vs. わ wa, or hiragana mirror images さ sa vs. ち chi, or hiragana こ ko vs. katakana ニ ni, or hiragana う u vs. katakana ラ ra?

Concider this done in the next release.
This tip is so simple that i am wondering why i didn't think of it.

That probaly means that i got some offsets wrong or to large for detecting the touch screen. I thought i had cleared that out in the latest version. I'll see if i can replicate this problem. It will be definitly on my 'to solve' list

Sorry, won't happen anywhere soon.
To get a bit technical, the reason why is that i then have to use a fat file system. I did that before with JDS but i got to many complains that is didn't work on specific cards. Even when they did patch the rom.
However... I made this for my own use and i don't mind to share it. So there comes a point where i have to is start to learning the kanji and then i need a aid. So you never know.

v1.25 available
- Removed the 1 second timeout when a wrong answer is given and replaced that for a 'Wait for touch screen'
- Removed the 1 second timeout when you check if your drawing is oke and replaced that for a 'Wait for touch screen'
- Added 'Touch to continue !' message.
- Remove the bug that cause a partial screen wipe when the menu was open and you clicked besides the unfolded menu.
- Startup bug removed. Apparently no menu was selected even when it was shown at startup.

I am working on a very similar project for Flash 6. May I ask where you got the sound clips you use? I have been looking for some available in the public domain with no luck.
This is very cool, by the way. I don't have much use for it personally (during development of my own project, I learned them all-- though I do sometimes get a few of the Katakana mixed up. Damn you, So, N, Tsu and Shi!), but I'm glad it exists. Learning to read kana is awesome.
#127815 - HyperHacker - Sat May 05, 2007 8:50 am
Yeah, it's cool being able to read all these things you couldn't before. You might also want to look at Slime Forest Adventure, which is similar to JDS but in a game format and for the PC.

This app is just AWESOME :D
Thank you so much for the effort....

Sorry for the late reply, i m rather busy with moving to a new house and other things in real life that needs my attention. Sigh*
@mntorankusu
I grabbed the sound file from a web site. The are public domain but i can't remember anymore from which site it was. I've looked at so many site that i kindda lost track.
@HyperHacker
Yeah, i've got Slime Forest adventure installed too :)
Now i can read Japanese but i still don't understand the meaning yet... So that's the next fase

Wow I love this program, I have tried learning Japanese lettering before but nothing worked as well as this.
Is it possible to increase the sound files volume, since even with the volume cranked they seem to quiet.

I had a few requests via my blog to change the scoring system so here it is.
Version 1.26 now keep track of your overall score and the score in the practice that you are taking.
Btw, thanks for all the feedback.
New ROM's at http://nds.zoelen.net
or keep an eye on my blog at http://blog.dev-scene.com/ashairey

Nice work! This is probably going to stay on my DS for a while. I would like to request a few features though.
In the writing practice, could you make the brush ~3 pixels instead of 6? It is difficult to write certain characters that involve barely lifting the stylus (like ya) because they run together.
In the other modes, it displays a character on the top screen, but if you change the selected practice characters to exclude that character, you cannot continue until you re-select the group the character is in. Could you make it so the character on the top screen changes if it's corresponding group is deselected on the bottom screen?
Other than that, I don't really have any complaints except that the sound is really soft.
Amazing job non-the-less! I'm gonna keep this around for a long time.

I've included the last suggestions for this app and i finalized it all into version 1.27. So you can consider this as the final version.
Thanks to all for giving 'the all so important' input.
Have fun and happy learning Japanese

It seems that people need a little ?push? to respond because since i announced that Project JDS is final i got several requests and updates. Due to this i revoked the ?final? status from Project JDS, which is now at version 1.29
In this release i re-sampled the 48 speech files so they are louder as many of you requested. I also added a good/false sound, an intro sound and a few other sounds to bring things more alive. In the previous release i introduced an new error that i hadn?t noticed. That one is removed to in this release.
As always, have fun and grab the new release at http://nds.zoelen.net

Oh cool. Sadly, I haven't played around with this tool that much, but it seems very useful from what I did see. It's been a few years since I took any Japanese and I've forgotten most of the kana. This is quite helpful for reminding me what they were. I'll have to show some of my friends studying it now. Thanks!

uhhh... I can't got http://nds.zoelen.net/ to load...
EDIT: N/M, it works now.
EDIT 2: It seems the latest NDS version has a broken/corrupt archive...
EDIT 3: Even though I use 7zip, WinRAR's "fix archive" worked. I've re-uploaded the unzipped NDS here:

I didn't have any trouble getting it. Sounds like it may be a problem with your connection, rather than the site or download itself.

Just had my first Japanese lesson, and this app is really helpful in remembering those hiragana! Thank you!

Pardon the bump, but I noticed some oddities while using this. If you get more than 100 right, the "wrong" counter disappears. Also, you can have speech enabled while doing kana->romaji or kana->kana, but not romaji->kana, why is that?
The sounds are nice BTW.

Hi HyperHacker.
You are lucky today. First thing, the behavior for the speech is intended. I've included speech only for Japanese, so only when a kana is on the upper screen.
Next the 'oddities when more then 100 right'
This one is resolved now. Thanks for letting me know. Version 1.3 is online for download.

Cool. BTW, I just noticed the screenshots on the download page are old, showing bugs that aren't in the latest versions.
