It certainly has potential, but the current icons along the bottom are very difficult to decipher.

Out of interest, is the programmer of World of Sand DS around? I'm interested to know how the FPS meter worked.

Now with combustible natural gas and a simple readout of what things should be on the top screen. Tons more to come. http://www.mediafire.com/?a05z5wmdvxm

Thanks. That comment really makes me feel great after a long day at school.
Fixed this one, but talk about a mouthful of an error message!
c:/devkitpro/SandScape/source/main.c:338: error: called object '*((u8 *)(i) + 34603264u) == 10u && beb == 12u' is not a function

Sweet program.
I would love ability to turn the screen upside down.

How do you mean? A mere flip or gravity reversal?

i second the idea, and a mere flip would do me

I'll add a feature to mirror the sand data and turn the BG 180 degrees. That should simulate inverse gravity fairly well.

AXYPB on the DCEmu forums had this to say:
Quote: |
Judged against the de facto standard implementation of the Falling Sand Game:
* I've never seen a version with a non-black background.
* If L increases the size of the pen, the R button should do the same so as to accommodate left-handed users.
* The Fire effect is overwrought, but very unique.
* No normal Plant or the ??? ?
* Elements drawn at the edges warp to the other side.
* A section of the top of the screen isn't functional.
* What is it that spills from the top when Up is pressed?
* The screens don't turn off when the DS is closed.
* Most implementations of the original game have multiple speeds. Your version could easily handle this if it can run at 60 fps.
* A function to clear out the screen would be nice.
More opinions as I use this further. |
#141634 - NeX - Thu Sep 27, 2007 9:35 pm
Never seen a version with a non-black background? Fine, I'll add an option soon to black it.
The L-thing is a hack. GUI will handle this soon.
Plant is soon to come, as is ???, or Oblivionite as I have renamed it. I renamed it because there's not really a way to pronounce ??? to someone who's never played it before.
Oblivionite will not work quite like ??? as I have run out of palette slots, but will have a similar result. I'm thinking it turns all sands and fluids into combustible material, and fills empty space with fires.
There is no edge detection as of yet. I am going to make it optional.
The section at the top of the screen is where more GUI will be.
Up spills fire-acid from the top of the screen.
I have added sleep to the program.
With all the new features and substances, it no longer runs at solid 60 FPS. Usually over 50, but with lots of fire, about 20.
Screen clear added.
Thanks for your opinions.

AXYPB had this response:

I have an idea regarding the element selection. Instead of reserving part of the screen, have the elements on a drop-down menu accessible by pressing L or R. This would save screen space as well as allow for many more elements to be implemented. To complement this, the user can choose whether opening this menu pauses the sand until it's closed. |
#141640 - NeX - Thu Sep 27, 2007 10:27 pm
Neat idea. Implemented for next version.

Thanks for getting my first points across, Markzilla. I have too many ideas to have to rely on someone else to post them here.
- Saving and loading screenshots to/from PNG.
- Change the sand to a paler yellow. The current sand doesn't look like sand at all.
- Changeable sources (the standard sand, water, salt, oil that spills from the top, but allow the user to change these to any other element).
- I assume that the final form of Cement hardens to Wall over time?
- I don't think Fire is supposed to be able to overwhelm Wall.
#141642 - NeX - Thu Sep 27, 2007 10:41 pm
The PNG bit I can't do because the hardware I've got has a bit of SRAM and that's it, and the sand I have changed since the last release, but all three of your other ideas are planned or done.

Do you have any ideas for what your program's menu icon will look like?
#141684 - Darkflame - Fri Sep 28, 2007 8:03 am
Seems a nice program, but the backdrop seems corrupted when run on my GBAMP :-/
(looks like a noisy mess).
Everything else seems to work though :D

Great work NeX, I was surprised at how smoothely this ran. I really like this game, thanks for it.
#141712 - AXYPB - Fri Sep 28, 2007 8:14 pm
I like how the Oil burns gradually. It looks a lot more realistic than the normal implementation that simply consumes the entire body of oil at once. However, the Oil unless it's mounded; the fire can't spread if the oil is completely flat.
#141718 - NeX - Fri Sep 28, 2007 8:57 pm
Hmm... might make it so that if fire has oil beneath it, it burns it at random.

Will this be moddable like the PC version?
#141764 - NeX - Sat Sep 29, 2007 3:56 pm
No. Not only would the DS be put under strain when using an engine like this with unhardcoded substances, I don't have the hardware to test such a system. DLDI can work on GBA carts, but it takes about twice as long to get it onto the system itself. And besides, if I'm out of palette slots anyhow, what good is a flexible system going to be?

I like this, it's faster and has more cool effects than World of Sand DS, but I don't like these:
-Blue background (change it to flat black, it's easier to see)
-Menu on touch screen (make the most out of the touch screen by putting tool selection and brush sizes on the top screen, use the arrow buttons or ABXY pad to select)
-Top of the touch screen doesn't work right
Other than those, this is really good :) it runs very fast considering the hardware limitations.

If you don't mind me asking, how is development going? I don't mean to rush you, but it has been more than two weeks since you posted anything about your progress...
#145812 - NeX - Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:07 pm
I've kinda rewritten the whole thing... it's now entirely customisable with not even void hardcoded, and it does run at full 60 frames per second with much better liquid/powder flow than before, albeit at a half-resolution of 128x96. Working on the GUI at the moment, as it's merely a text console currently.

For quite a long while after the touchscreen code messed up, (after changing devkitARM version) I did abandon it. And then, after reading your posts, I decided a rewrite was in order. I'd had quite a few ideas, actually, such as the configurability, and how to compensate for the speed loss using a low resolution. It doesn't actually run much slower - but enough to get annoying. The only difference in terms of visual quality is that the particles now take up 4 pixels instead of 1... but that's not terrible.

Yeah this game kicks ass love it well cool.
Would be nice even if you are not going to continue working on it to add in a clear screen button and fix the two bottom left icons i would be happy with that as clearing the screen is a pain in the ass.
