DS homebrew announcements > MoonShell skins

#73063 - swimgod - Thu Feb 23, 2006 3:34 am

well i was thinking to give more style to moonshell,
since Moonlight has worked enabled skins
and made a app to create previews i think it would be a good idea to make a website to get a list of skins :P

which is why im coding one right now
since i made a lovehina skin :)
so if you wanna be in the skin directory
just send me the zip with a preview
to ooinfinityoo@gmail.com
or website link you have :)

then i will upload it to my server and put it in my skin lists :)

#73501 - RVK - Sun Feb 26, 2006 3:16 am

Just run it in desmume and take a screen shot

#73505 - swimgod - Sun Feb 26, 2006 3:55 am

the EMU works as if it were reading the game off of a normal flash cart..therefore you can't use the emu..and yes..ther eis a warning.

If you look at the bmp file which will be use dto put the screenshot on, it says, please use media which can be damaged...i'm guessign this means just data corruption..but...whatever :X

EDIT: Anyways, if i do release my skin, I DO NOT want you to host it....

#73546 - RVK - Sun Feb 26, 2006 3:54 pm

If you create an exfs rom the emu will run it!

Well, it's a skin I made that takes advantage of the fact that the DS has two screens....it's just the cutest cat girl skin ever. And I even custum made all the title bars with cute little paw prints running down the bar, with cute little cat ears before the paw prints at the begginign of the title bars. It's just so special and butifull....and then to have everyoen using it :X LOL :-P

#73807 - FireSlash - Tue Feb 28, 2006 5:11 am

I have a crapton of bandwidth + PHP / SQL knowledge... I could write a script to automate things a bit. If there'd be an interest in that.

i also have a knowledge of this stuff too :P

lol, just didn't have the time to automate things fully :D

im gonna open a forum on my site and have it so mods in the forum can login and upload previews and zip's of there skins with out me :D

if you know how to automate that (which i do, so i can help you when i have time) then sure you can help me automate it even more...
i have already created a mysql database for the skins, and i have made it so it will not link or display an image that doesn't exist in the context of the directory i desided :)

#73969 - swimgod - Wed Mar 01, 2006 4:55 am

i have used it three times...
it has caused no Damage...

infact i think the same thing can happen by just using regurlar moonshell?

well man i think its worth the risk... Because in my oppion there is no risk :D

I didn't use the official skin preview tool either because of that confusing message. But to be honest moonlight's english is not too good. So what I think he means by "you must use media that can be damaged" , is actually that you have to use non-write protected material so that it can save the image capture. Who knows.

After playing around i found that it does write over the required bmp, so That is probably what the message means.

I think the warnign for the Skin Prewiev tool is for scrcap.bmp. After all whatever was there before gets overwritten once you run scrcap.nds.

I think he's just afraid it'll courrupt someone's memory card. This way, they know that if it happens he's not responsible. :)

That's right. The FAT drivers have always been a little unstable when it comes to writing.

ok i started working on skin lister v2.0 :)

this time it will have a preview creator ;)
an online php script to cut, paste, resize the preview images people created :D

it is fully automatic and maps it on a DS lite image :D
http://swimgod.com/ms_skins/preview.php
it is a jpeg, and everytime you click on the link its recreating it.
so don't abuse this lol
the reason i made it that way is so i can have people submit there own and it will create a great preview for them :)

hope you like this one ;)

Edit:i changed it so you can better see what it is doing lol
now it will show a random skin in my list :P

You could probably use some standard HTML/CSS to just output the two screenshots, and position them over a DSLite image.

HyperHacker wrote:

but then people can save the image,
and the way i have it setup now it adds some infomation on the image too :)

it is so much less work to just use php
and in the end better compatiblity :)

BTW:
i have about 9 skins(uploading one now)
and all of them work with the preview on the main page :)
click on the image next to your skin title
and it will change the dslite to that skin ;)

well, i decided to have a shot at a skin yesterday, and so i give you my Metroid Hunters skin:
http://www.wayne.sebbens.com/Metroid_Hunters.zip
there's a black line that appears under the title bar, i'm not too sure of how to remove this line only, and i still need to muck around with file browser part
to come: windows on touch screen arranged and custom startup sound

(yes, you can put this skin up on your site swimgod)

I've been working on a Samus-themed Metroid Prime Hunters skin for a few day, but Sebbo beat me to it (plus his is a bit more slick than mine). Well, I'll post mine anyway.

Here's a preview image, and here's the file.

Feel free to list this on your site swimgod. Here's some info for you:

lol,
anyway...
im working on modding my preview image script to work with any ds image capture :P

that means like ds game reviews from like gamespot
with ds game photos will automaticly sized to fit the ds shot i have :P

turning out pretty cool :D

i will release the source script if anyone wants it :)
(just gotta clean it up a bit... make it more organized)
P.S. its in php (no duh!!, the damn url for every single one of my pages ends in the php extention :P)

edit:
http://swimgod.com/ms_skin/DS_view.php?url=[image-url]&ext=[jpeg or png]&output=[jpeg or png]

the ext and output are optional :P
im not done cleaning up the code but its going good :)
it can handle any sized preview...
for example if you have an over sized ds preview image in width
it will adjust etc...

good luck :D

Here are some really awesome Moonshell skins!
http://forum.lowyat.net/lofiversion/index.php/t283070.html
I'd say the Vista ones are my favourites, as the OSX and PSP ones both have images of buttons which I can't actually press...
Though, I guess the Vista one has the Start button, too.
Ah well. I can still demonstrate the "look, my DS can do Vista's alpha windows better than Vista can!" and by the time they suspect that it's really just pre-rendered alpha, it's too late!

Edit: If you hate unpressable buttons, the OSX one is actually your best bet... these skins were made before the closebtn image was added, so the Vista one has an unpressable close button! (Not too hard to fix those, though... but still). Also easier to get the Apple logo out of the OSX one. I'm working on a little NDS logo to use in its place...

I wanted all of them, so my current fix is to have DSOrganize renaming the shell directory (of which I have about 6 versions now).
Do you think it would be possible to come up with some way to get a Moonshell plugin which changes themes?
(I'm thinking permanently here, so it would have to rearrange some files).
I suppose the best way to get it booting would be by having some kind of Moonshell skin file extension. Wouldn't really need anything in the file...

Or maybe I should stop skinning Moonshell and get to work!

This might be a stupid question but how do you instal skins?

#85912 - swimgod - Sat Jun 03, 2006 1:55 am

you can the directory in any zip to where you can see images files,
then drag all those in the zip into /shell on your CF or SD card
and then start moonshell and there you go

I have a few old skins that you don't have in your directory, here's some links. Let me know if they don't work as they are pretty old links now.

Ahhhh, kind of sucks we can't use images here. Anyhow, I'm a pretty experienced skinner. I will start posting links to my Moonshell skins here.

noob here... need to know how to put the skin up in my Moonshell.. using SC lite

#103948 - heyyouguys - Mon Sep 25, 2006 4:40 pm

Put all the .bmp along with the skin.ini in the shell folder.

Next time you turn on you will see the new skins.

K, I'm almost done making a skin, but I have some questions/problems...

1) The screenshot app is not working. It makes a shot of the default skin.
2) How do I give the windows backgrounds like I see in some skins? I suspect client.bmp is involved, but I put an image there and I'm not seeing it used at all.
3) How do I make a startup animation?
4)

Will this ever come out? :3
5) Can I set the position of the system menu?

[edit] I copied client.bmp from another skin and it worked... weird. But can I have a different image for each window? Having to use the same image for each is rather limiting.

Well I can't get MakeSplash.exe to work. "???????????????." is probably the least helpful error message ever. Nor does the preview tool or any emulator work. So here's the skin and three terrible photos. I kept the default startup animation for now, I see no need to change the sounds, and I included a lang1.ini that translates a few things more accurately and better fits the small windows. Enjoy.

Backgrounds are random images I found on Google, other images I made myself.

That means that the error message is being displayed using characters that do not exist in the system font. Perhaps you need to set your system font to MS Gothic (and possibly the system language to Japanese) and then you'll be able to sound out any katakana in the error message.

Changing the font won't do the trick. If the system font can't display the text, it should fall back to another font that can. If there is no font that can, it will display like this: "□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□.", not this: "???????????????."
You get question marks in the case where the codepage is incorrect. A lot of Japanese applications are not written in unicode, and rely on the OEM codepage for text to display properly. You can set application-local codepages with Microsoft AppLocale. There are some applications (like Winny) that are known not to work with AppLocale, so if you still encounter problems, I'd recommend to set the OEM codepage to Japanese globally.
