I've just launched the website for my brand new game I'm developing with a friend. It is still in the development process so we have no idea when it'll be out. Right now the site is just a teaser of what's to come, but any input about it is welcome. The site is: http://www.darknessrising-ds.co.nr. To view the game that actually started all this go here: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/275691.

Pretty damn small world this is.
I played that game when the Revmote came out, it gave inspiration of what the Revmote could do, and I liked it. Didn't know you were part of the homebrew community!
I can't wait to play it on the DS!

Thanks, I've been working on DS programming for about half a year now and I thought I'd try a little project. I have one question though...how did this game give inspiration of what the Revmote could do? I'm just curious (Oh and btw, thanks to your post, you've inspired me to include stylus swordplay to the game lol).

Oh, nevermind, I got a bit confused.
Yes, I had played your game before, and several others that are similar. I just played your game again, and with a bit of help, it could work great on the DS, and I'm not talking about using the bottom screen to select attacks.
IMO, RPGs are getting boring by the second. Lunar now features an "auto attack" system, same with FFXII and others. The whole "hit and get hit" is getting pretty stale too.
One of the games I played (the one I confused your's with) was in first person view, and required you to move the mouse in order to slay enemies or block attacks, it was featured on Newgrounds too.
I'm still interested in playing your game, but a bit of first person slaying wouldnt be bad ;)

That's exactly what your post inspired me to start programming, a sort of first person swordplay that could happen during the course of fighting monsters and bosses. It could sort of end up like the Resident Evil first person knife-battles, but it will feature blocking and attacking. Now I just have to figure out how to do this :-D.

If you code it in PA_Lib, i'd be more than glad to help you out ;)

I totally agree with Nushio as well.
I think the game he's talking about might be Ronin.

You know, I was thinking of doing this in PA_Lib, but I didn't want to because I thought I had the skills to do a fully fledged game right away (I know, it's stupid lol) but I've decided I'll do this with PA_Lib along with my prior knowledge of DS programming :-D

Lots of people write DS games without ever using PA_Lib...

I know, but I don't exactly have all the skills needed to do a fully fledged game with what I know as of now. I was going to learn as I went along while writing the game :S. I meant what I said as how I just explained it, not that it's stupid to not write your first game without PA_Lib. Sorry about that confusion.

first person battles sound good to me...*dreams of morrowind and oblivion*
Tactics style RPGs (eg. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance) and even RPGs with battle systems like Tales of Symphonia are good as well...constant action means no bored button pressing
as far as the battle system goes, what if you dragged the stylus across the screen for a slash (slash follows direction of stylus) and just hold it in the one spot to block? you could then block left, right, above and below as well as centre then

any new updates on the game for the DS Darkness Rising
#81281 - Ripple_in_Eternity - Fri Apr 28, 2006 2:28 am
OK, im Ripple, quasi-art-guy director(yes, spencer, i demand art director!!! lol) for this game I was in on the first Darkness rising. Now, normaly i would know more on the subject, but so far we do have some nice sprites, but spencer's away for the time being, and since he's the head honcho of this project i can't say yes or no to anything concerning anyone here, i will try to update our progress as best i can, but so far we are considering so touch screen slash action( rolls off the tounge, no?) but spencer know the code, so he makes the great gears turn...

Not too much, I haven't been able to work on anything at all since I've been away at a Robotics competition in Atlanta, Georgia (go team 1305!). I've been gone for about a week and I need to catch up on a bit of school work but the project should be back on track soon. We have decided we will have first person swordplay as well as a sort of Final Fantasy type battle engine incorporated into it and gameplay sort of like the Zelda series during the overworld walking around.
#81699 - jester - Mon May 01, 2006 3:04 pm
ok then that is acceptable i however see this game as a excellent homebrew addition.

I will also be updating the website soon with more information. (Check first post to see updates)

Well, the pictures only around 55 Kb, so it shouldn't be a huge load on the 56 Kbps users. Thanks for the input!

so liranuna have you finished your work on your homebrew RPG is this really completed??
#83726 - Linkiboy - Thu May 18, 2006 1:49 am
My only complaint is that it's using Tripod as a host. AddYour.com is a better alternative.

Yeah...I do have better hosts, but seeing as all I need right now is that, I'm happy with it. I will eventually move it to either a 1L.com account or my tripod.co.uk account. It will be on a better site soon though.

Again, I've updated the website. I now have a progress bar as suggested by jester. It's nothing much, but it should do for now.
http://www.darknessrising-ds.co.nr
Any other suggestions? I will do a major update to the website when the project is at least 25 - 30% done.
#85473 - jester - Tue May 30, 2006 6:24 pm
any new breakthroughs on the project when will we see a beta release??

The graphics engine is getting closer to being complete, so we'll be running sprites pretty soon and most of the art is complete. A beta release may not be too close because we only really have 2 developers for the project.

anything new any new updates??
#88605 - spencer723 - Tue Jun 20, 2006 4:23 pm
Hey everyone!
Ripple and I have been busy with our final exams over the past couple of weeks so no news as of now. Since both of us are finished our exams we're going to try and catch up with our work on Darkness Rising. I'm getting closer to finishing the 2D part of the graphics engine and we'll probably begin some sounds to run in a, hopefully soon, ALPHA version.

i can certainly recommend using palib, it will allow you to spend less time coding and more time making a good game.
#104852 - jester - Tue Oct 03, 2006 9:28 am
PALib was a little confusing for me i use Lua but whatever is easiest for you
