Thanks to Stephen Stair's great work with dswifi, I was able to finish a first test version of my nds e-mail client, NDSMail.
It needs Wifi to be set up, you can do this with any wifi-enabled game.
please give feedback, thanks :)

#80800 - ?hr - Tue Apr 25, 2006 6:31 pm
i have a m3 CF, 2 AP(WEP on and SSID off | WEP off and SSID on ) and a 2GB CF card.
a friend has a GBAMP too. ill buy it later from him when he gets the m3 too(in around 2-3 weeks) :)
oh and im from germany and i use the best email ever: GMAIL!!! :D
#80801 - chava - Tue Apr 25, 2006 6:41 pm
I could help too.
I've got a SC SD if you wanna test again ^^ and pop3 email.
Contact me if you need to.
#80807 - Bronto - Tue Apr 25, 2006 6:52 pm
btw, you can use the pad to scroll the mail
Content type not supported yet means the mail is html-only (or at least detected as html-only) which of course can not be displayed.
#80808 - gman21 - Tue Apr 25, 2006 6:59 pm
I've been lurking since November 04, but I don't think I've posted once :P
Anyway, I'd love to test it. I use a flashcart with flashme or WMB.
#80811 - mntorankusu - Tue Apr 25, 2006 7:15 pm
I can't make it work with Gmail, and I don't have any other mail accounts to try it with. But I don't even know if it's successfully connecting to my AP; does the slow blinking at the beginning have something to do with that?
#80812 - Bronto - Tue Apr 25, 2006 7:17 pm
right, I think I heard gmail only works over secure connections (SSL). Blinking is a good sign. does it display the main menu ?
#80814 - Flyfishing - Tue Apr 25, 2006 7:21 pm
I have a GBA MP w/PassMe. I'd be willing to test it, but I'm not sure if I have a POP3 e-mail (I have AOL), but I could create another e-mail address if I can get the new address for free (so I need to know what ones will work)...I have my wifi settings working, I think...I can connect to my access point fine with the WiFi Lib Test. Hope I can help!

Bronto wrote: |

I get white screens the whole time, but at first the light blinks very slowly, and then the screen does something (just a flash, like it updated or something) and the light starts blinking faster. I'll see if I can find an email account that doesn't use SSL to try it on.
Edit: By the way, it didn't work at all on my GBA MP loaded from MoonShell.

I uploaded a new version. It displays some info on what it is doing during start up. If doesn't display anything, there is something wrong with the start up code. Please let me know if you use flashme (which version) or passme.

Hmm nope dont work for me this app either.. it just stands still at:

Of course, Mario Kart + Animal Crossing connect to WFC just fine...
I'll try adding same data to all 3 slots... maybe it works then..
Edit:
Nope, did not help... Strange....

He's right. I think that there are enough people willing to test your program, so just post a link and I think that new developers are always welcome so we're not going to make a fool out of you :)
Hope to find the link here soon to test it (I have got 2 SCSD + 2 DS)

Wifi lib dont like hidden/not broadcasting SSiD.
When I turned it ON. all programs started working.
NDSmail, sgstairs test examples.
But it seems like it crash on retreiving the message headers...
only 1 mail in that account..so should not take this long to download.
Now it fails on PASS..

and does it say "retrieving message headers" or "retrieving mail x of y" ?
#80863 - arlow - Tue Apr 25, 2006 10:06 pm
new version works great for me but i think my DS is about to get busted as my inbox is kinda packed :D
It is receiving the mails (18 of 80) speed is okay....
Okay it did get all of the 80mails (at least it said so)
also the debug windows saying everything went fine came
then it started showing the mails:
1st mail okay (not able to look at content)
2nd mail okay (could see the text)
and then
32
32
32
32
32
32
etc.
as i tried to look at the 3rd mail my DS crashed saying on the topscreen: ERROR:mail can't be display (RM01)
This was on my first account r-low@web.de but my other account got stuck at receiving headers (meyar_mabo@web.de) perhaps due to the "_"

Ah, I forgot I turned off WEP on my router. Changed the settings and it works now. :)
#80870 - Bronto - Tue Apr 25, 2006 10:17 pm
the "32" problem is most probably caused by memory limitations.
I'm planning to only download mails <10 kb automatically in the next versions. for the larger mails, the user has to press a button.
what do you think about that?
btw. you can scroll the mails list with X / B until I include a scrollbar

No cant test any other pop3, they all require ssl. this dont.
and it say: "retrieving message headers"
and a short black bar appears, and then nothing...

Forgive me for my ignorance, but is it possible to connect through my Nintendo usb wifi dongle since I don't have a router?
#80882 - Kvasir - Wed Apr 26, 2006 12:18 am
you said it works with your SCSD bronto, but I can't seem to use it at all. I have to rename the ds.gba file to get it to run, then once I'm in it won't read/write the cfg file...
#80884 - Bronto - Wed Apr 26, 2006 12:24 am
compacho,
if the nintendo usb stick acts as an access point (which I think it does) it should work. can you play wifi games with it?
kvasir,
that is correct, you have to rename the ds.gba file to .nds.
scsd writing is not supported in this version, but reading should not be a problem. in fact, reading even works in dualis.
what error message concerning reading do you get?
#80887 - Kvasir - Wed Apr 26, 2006 12:37 am
Right before it goes to the main menu, it comes up with an error box that says "Configuration file could not be read!". I should probably try the cfg file as it came with the zip, I edited the .cfg to reflect the server settings I wanted to use. I'll let you know if the default cfg file works.
UPDATE: Nope, didn't work with the default cfg file. I'm using the newest SuperCard SD Firmware and FlashMe v7.
another UPDATE: I *do* have the app and cfg file in a folder other than the root directory, maybe this is my problem? right now its in /Apps/NDSMail, I'll move them to the root directory and see if that works.
YET another update: that was it ;) I have to have the .cfg file in the root directory, I can run NDSmail from any other folder and as long as the .cfg file is in the root directory, it will find it.
Update Quatro: I'm having the same issue as Mithos with my mail account, the account is provided by my ISP (rr) and uses POP3 without any sort of special connection (TLS, SSL, etc.) I appriciate what you've done so far Bronto, this will be a great app that I'll use constantly.

Yeah, i can play games without any problems, yet all i get from NDSmail is request connect.
#80892 - 0xtob - Wed Apr 26, 2006 1:17 am
Wow! Definitely wow! One day has passed since the TCP-enabled wifi-lib is out and we already get a really promising looking mail client! Definitely keep it up!
I have done some testing: Read/write works with GBAMP, except for the fact that the lines that contain the ports are omitted, which makes a written config file invalid. Also, I had the problem that the last character of each line was cut off. The problem was that i was using Unix-Style line breaks (only LF, not CRLF). Maybe you should add supprt for that, but it's only a detail.
The connection to the AP seems to work (the program starts up without errors). I have tried four POP3 servers. Unfortunately, I could not fetch mails from any of them. Here's the results:
web.de: Stuck at retrieving message headers
gmx.net: Stuck at closing connection
my university's mailserver: Stuck at retrieving message headers
my website's mailserver: Stuck at retrieving message headers
I think this should not be too helpful. Maybe you could add some debug output to be able to diagnose the problems better. I'll be glad to do further testing.
Anyway, awesome job so far! I'm absolutely looking forward to checking my mail with my DS.
Bye,
Tob

#80895 - Bronto - Wed Apr 26, 2006 1:27 am
dswifi does not support fragmentation. So be sure to turn fragmentation OFF on your access point

V 0.22
New version uploaded. Fixes most of the problems caused by too large mails, especially Subjects displayed as "32". Only messages <=32kb are downloaded automatically.
I added more detailed messages, especially during the "Retrieving message header" phase.
For people having the problem where it gets stuck at the close connection phase, please tell me if you get the "broclosesocket" message before.
(and probably the receive ok one)
Crash when getting to the end of the list is fixed.

I guess that the SSiD in your router is hidden/not broadcasting, then it wont get past "request connect".
CFG-file is to setup the mail-account to get the mails from (your pop3 mail)

New Version 0.24 !
Should fix the problem where it got stuck at get message ids/sizes phases.
Also works on my gf's nds, so chances are it will work for everyone :)
Those who got the 0.23 version which was online for a few minutes, delete it as it has a major bug.
thundrestrike,
the ndsmail.cfg is a text file which you can edit in any text editor such as notepad on windows

Alright, I tried two accounts, one is a verizon with two mails, and another is a bluebottle with nothing. Both times the DS app gets by checking headers and getting file sizes but then freezes with an empty grey box on the screen.
*Note: At the password stage it tends to give me the socket error mentioned earlier after repeated tries.

CFG should go in root, which is in NO folders.
#81092 - Bronto - Thu Apr 27, 2006 1:26 am
thundrestrike,
no, it should be:
the ndsmail.cfg has to be in the root directory of the card

It was completely grey. Although after the first 4 times or so I haven't been able to recreate it, I just get the socket error now.

Alright, update. Turns out the socket error was because when I went to switch my config back to the other account I left the password. Note to self, wrong password = socket error. NOW that all the info is right, it connects, gets headers, gets size, and then GREY BOX of DOOM. The letters rmh are in the very upper left of bottom screen too.

Nothing happens. It's a different size this time, looks like a box is behind it. I think what happens is when the connection box disappears, it doesn't completely, or my DS freezes before the box vanishes completely giving me a blank grey box.
EDIT: This time It froze with the closing connection box with a thin grey line of what looks like the beginning of a new box running through it. My DS just seems to be freezing before finishing getting the mail.

thundrestrike,
no idea, perhaps you have to re-setup the wifi connection in a wifi game.
does anyone know if the wifi games need DNS to properly?
#81100 - thundrestrike - Thu Apr 27, 2006 1:42 am
i did that earlier and it didnt help.
this is really weird, do i need a certain version of flashme?
right now im using supercard CF
and i am using the ds.gba file that i manually renamed to .nds

Try assigning a manual IP and DNS and such from a wifi game. sgstairs lib doesn't seem to like to work with DHCP for me. So I put everything manual. Also try and put your home connection in the first wifi slot.
OH, I have a supercard SD if that matters.
#81103 - Bronto - Thu Apr 27, 2006 1:44 am
that's correct.. perhaps it is not working on SCCF. can you look at your access point's status screen if the nds connects to it. I suspect it actually does but crashes when trying to read from the cf card. I'll upload a new version 0.25 soon which tells you when it has connected. I'll post here when it is up.

AnalogMan, if you want you could try FlashMe v7, I have no clue if it has anything to do with it, but who knows. It seems to be the only difference between our configurations, DS wise.

Goto Start>Run and type CMD.
Then type ipconfig /all
That should give you all the info. As for IP the last digit should be 2 or 3 higher or lower than the one on your computer. (ex. the comp says 192.168.1.50 the DS would be 192.168.1.53 or so) Test the config after to see if it connects to nintendo.

SSID is the name of your wireless connection. linksys, or netgear, or wireless. It's the one that shows up in the list when you search for wireless signals.

Does it leave the messages on the server?
Does it support WEP?
Does it actually save the downloaded messages to the SD card?

Some clean ups and fixes. If it crashes while connecting to the AP, please check if it says "connected" or "Welcome to ndsmail"

Hi,Bronto. I'm using your latest NDSMail - ndsmail_sc.nds on SC SD.
The upper screen of DS says "connected!",
the lower "Debug Welcome to NDSMail".
Then I tap OK, I've got no response, just freeze. The LED still flickers.
I use a bluebottle mail account. The Wi-Fi Lib 0.3 connection test is quite OK.
Do you have any advice?

Some news, I included smtp support (for sending mails) and an option to disable fat access. I will upload it soon.
I'm confused however about why it does not work on some sc sd.please be more exact about the version of flashme / passme used and whether it's an old DS or DS lite ?
For the german users:
you can use any public t-mobile / t-com hotspot (for example at larger train stations) with nintendo wfc and also with NDSMail.
#81204 - Bronto - Thu Apr 27, 2006 9:32 pm
New version 0.28
- SMTP support added (yes, you can send mails!)
- you can disable FAT (for users where it crashes at startup, especially Supercard CF). Note that you will have to enter the settings manually
please note that the format of the ndsmail.cfg has changed! look at the ndsmail.cfg in the zip and update the settings

Try moving the block SUPPORT_SCCF in disc_io.c infront of the SC block. This should fix the crash.

like instead of "Jake" in the CFG file, it said "Jak" on the settings screen of the NDSMAIL program
i changed it but it still says invalid login ;O

Tried this program with both my gmail and worldnet accounts. All I get is "could not resolve host name." I also tried manually inputting my info to make sure I didn't fudge up on the config file.
Maybe it's the port numbers?
#81268 - Bronto - Fri Apr 28, 2006 1:11 am
gmail is not supported because it uses a ssl-connection. Don't know for worldnet.
However, "could not resolve host name" indicates there is a problem with DNS. Did you try sgstair's test app?

This is exactly what has been happening to me (hasn't tried since 0.24). Where it actually freezes is a little different everytime though. IF I have a progress bar, it's at closing connection.

HAHAHA, yeah. Actually I dont think I had any mail on the server at that time, I tend to clear stuff out, so that may have been why. It's retrieving mail that I've already read now, which is good. I even sent a message to a friend successfully! When going to reply though, had to re-enter the mail addy -- it just shows the name of the person in the address box. If I try to erase part of it, the actual address in > and <'s shows up, I'm thinking you know about that though ;-)

I put some mail in my account and it's working now. It was the same thing though, the grey box. It's like it's trying to draw one of the debug boxes, but crashes before finishing.

I upgraded to the latest one. Now, I say yes to FAT support and it gets to Getting mail 1 of 1 (There's actually three, just one is new) and then it gives me the debug socket error.
EDIT: If i leave it to set after the socket error, it says exiting pop, when I hit OK it says Recieve successful and I get that new mail. If I do it again I get the same mail again.

#81299 - tepples - Fri Apr 28, 2006 4:18 am
"Authenticated" could mean one or both of the following: - This server uses POP/IMAP before SMTP. You should read your mail on the same ISP from the same IP address before you try sending mail.
- You need to use SMTP-AUTH on the Message Submission Agent port (587).

so, to send an email to hotmail accounts, you need to first recieve an email from them, and then reply?

V.0.30 works fine on SC SD!
It seems it doesn't read the cfg file on some SD cards with FAT suppport on.
Receiving messages is quite all right while sending is never successful.
Can you fix 451 error? http://cr.yp.to/docs/smtplf.html
Edit: send error by using a bluebottle mail account
Send error box shows a list of 500 5.5.1 Command unrecognized errors.
Then freezes.

Are there any plans to add SSL support?
#81328 - Flyfishing - Fri Apr 28, 2006 1:01 pm
Ok, I can connect great with this app! And I can read my e-mails! Well, sort of. I'm currently unable to read the content of my e-mail. I am able to see my inbox and the subject lines. But when I open the e-mail, I get (on the top screen): "ERROR:mail can't be displayed (RM02)"
Any fixes/suggestions? I'm using a bluebottle account, GBA MP w/PassMe.
#81336 - Bronto - Fri Apr 28, 2006 2:53 pm
ok, bluebottle needs authentication, I'll look into it
flyfishing, does this happen with all emails?
hyperhacker, I'm thinking about SSL. Not promising anything ;)
#81339 - Flyfishing - Fri Apr 28, 2006 3:14 pm
It happens with e-mails that I've sent from my aol account...And I founf something, the e-mail's content (but it skips the first 2 lines of text) shows on the top screen when you highlight the message. When I open the e-mail, I get the error that I specified before. Hold on and I'll test with some more e-mail addresses...
#81341 - Bronto - Fri Apr 28, 2006 3:30 pm
what do you mean by "open the e-mail" ? You just highlight it in the bottom screen..

Bronto wrote: |

That must've been what I've been doing wrong...Anyway, even when I highlight the message, it still skips two lines of text for me.
EDIT: After sending a test e-mail, (and resetting the app) I was able to view the above lines...No complaints here!

Hey, great app Bronto!
I can recieve mail fine from my clearwire.net address, but when I send mail, I get a "could not recieve host name" error.....
btw, as a tip, could you post version numbers with the name of the zips?
Because I thought I downloaded the most recent version, but I'm not sure....

Well I wanted to comment to them on the mistake that gives me. I have Supercard SD, when I am going to send a mail he(she) says to me " could not resolve host name ", besides that it does not leave me to write things but only the direction and the matter.
My settings are:
POP3 server:
Pop.test.com POP3 Port:
110 POP3User:
Testuser POP3Password:
Testpass SMTPServer:
Smtp.test.com E-mail Address:
Name@test.com Display name:

New Version 0.32
- SMTP auth support
- scrollbar!
- settings bug fixed where text would disappear if larger than box
- wifi connection probably more stable
- mail address automatically inserted in reply-mail (not complete yet)
- some more things I forgot
- mail download more intelligent
#81408 - nintendofreak - Sat Apr 29, 2006 1:06 am
Hmm having troubles with the cfg file still :( Using supercard sd, it cannot open the cfg file :(
Any tips?

#81414 - nintendofreak - Sat Apr 29, 2006 1:51 am

- fixes crashes
- sends keep-alive packet to keep connection to router alive
#81420 - Bronto - Sat Apr 29, 2006 2:18 am
Users having problems with their Supercard SD please try this version:
http://www.bronto-online.de/ndsmail_scsd.zip
#81433 - thundrestrike - Sat Apr 29, 2006 3:56 am
is the new version supposed to make it able to send messages to email address such as "hotmail"? I try to send emails to it but it just gives me like 10 error messages.
will this be fixed in future releases? thanks :)
also: suggestion
whenever you scroll down while reading one email, and then change to look at another email message, its still scrolled down and you have to scroll it back up to the top.
just wanted to point that out! thanks

You might need a real (SMTP) e-mail server, not webmail.

I think you missed his point. You need to use a different SMTP (outgoing) server. Your current SMTP server does not allow you to send mail to Hotmail accounts. Your friend does not need to change his email address. Typically, your ISP can provide you a SMTP server that can be used to send mail msgs to anybody... Some web space provider offers the same, but usually you have to enter an user name/password. Do you use Outlook Express or other-mail-client on your PC? If so, which SMTP is it configured to?

so... what your saying is gawab.com wont let me send to hotmail? ill try doing it from my actual computer, ill edit this post as soon as i do
EDIT:
from my computer, i sent and email to hotmail (my old account), using my gawab.com account. it was successful except for it arriving in my junk mail.
tried sending it from my ds to the hotmail and got 10 or so errors
EDIT 2
re-read your post, and no I don't use outlook or anything, i actually check my email straight from Gawab.com
is that bad or something? how can I make it so my ds is able to send to hotmail?

I think you might have to get your buddy to whitelist your e-mail address. Some Hotmail accounts are configured to send everything not from a whitelisted address to the junk bin.

Ok I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't even get it to connect to my AP.
The AP is wide open, I'm using XP with a Supercard (SD).
I've tried filling up the 3 spots with the AP info, alas no change. Oh and the router is an Actiontec. Maybe it's the crappy router?
Any help would be appreciated!
#81469 - devmani - Sat Apr 29, 2006 10:04 am
Quigoni, can you connect to your AP with wifi_lib_test.nds?
The file is included in the zip below.
http://akkit.org/dswifi/dswifi_lib_v0.3_examples.zip
Your AP(SSID) is visible with it? This is the most important.

I haven't seen any of the latter, but every so often if I tap on one of the messages or hit a button at the wrong moment, it tends to freeze. I know it's still in its early stages, though.

good idea! what do the others think about it?
perhaps we could team up for that.
Does anyone know about legal issues?
#81572 - Darkflame - Sun Apr 30, 2006 3:58 am
Isnt any really, I dont think Nintendo could really put claim to "ndsmail" as a email system, dispite it contain the letters "nds".
Setting up email is the same as setting up a website;
You need to buy a domain (cheap), Then you need someone to host it (not so cheap).
My domain is;
www.darkflame.co.uk
(site still work in progress).
This means I can manage all the
blahblah@Darkflame.co.uk emails.
#81573 - Bronto - Sun Apr 30, 2006 4:07 am
yeah, same for ndsmail@bronto-online.de . But I have to set this up manually using a web-interface. I think ndsmail.com would need an automated system.

www.dreamhost.com is pretty nice. Costs about $120 a year for hosting, with a $80 discount using promocode "DSX2" for a one-year contract (thus just over $3 a month for 3000 POP3 mailboxes). Just go for the Crazy Domain Insane plan.
#81665 - Grupstra - Mon May 01, 2006 12:42 am
Ok, I tried it out on my GBAmp, and I am using my charter.net account. it can connect, and it gets to either getting message sizes, or message IDs, then it displays either a UIDL failed, or List FAILED, and it displays all sorts of stuff below. hte text overlaps a lot so i cant read it, but it basically looks like different servers it passes through, since it says stuff like "somethorother@charter1.message.net" or stuff like that, then displays a numbers list with random numbers after. In both instances, I then get the brclosesocket message, then no messages are displayed.
I tried it three times with FAT turned off, ad I got 5 messages received, even though I only have 1 test one I sent myself in the inbox. it had about 4 copies of the test message, but all but one had no text in it, and the one that did have text didn't have the correct text. another message was blank, with a blank subject.
I am using Flashme V7, with GBAmp 2.11.
#81669 - Bronto - Mon May 01, 2006 1:24 am
New version 0.37
new features:
- access point select screen (Press Start while it tries to connect to one of the default access points); may not work perfectly yet
- pop3 code improved
- smpth authorization fixed
- compose message improved
- keep alive packets sent for all screens (except dialogs)
known bugs:
- sometimes messages are displayed incorrectly or duplicated, crashes while downloading mail. most important issue at the moment caused by a bug in dswifi
- keyboard causes freeze when used too quick (palib)
- bad error handling in mail send
- config file writing not supported on some flashcards like SCSD
- keep alive packets send for all screens (except dialogs)
Please report any errors (and re-report older ones) not present in this list. Also, ideas and suggestions for new features are welcome.
#81672 - howlingblue - Mon May 01, 2006 1:47 am
The main thing I would like is multiple account handling, since I have a couple I think would work.....
btw, is the link on the 1st page always the newest version? (making sure, since I keep redownloading it there)
also, if it's not too much trouble, putting version numbers in the zip name would be nice.....
#81673 - Bronto - Mon May 01, 2006 2:36 am
the latest version is always at the same address (http://www.bronto-online.de/ndsmail_prev.zip)
As NDSMail is not stable yet, and changes are made sometimes multiple times a day, so it does not make sense to keep older versions on the server.
I set up a basic info & troubleshooting page at
http://bronto-online.de/ndsmail.htm
#81678 - nintendofreak - Mon May 01, 2006 4:11 am

#81679 - AnalogMan - Mon May 01, 2006 4:21 am
Alright, this version actually sort of works for me. I still get those socket errors but I get my message in the end. I can reply and send messages as well. Only one thing I noticed. If I send myself an email with the DS, when viewed on the DS, and ONLY the DS, there's extra junk text at the end of the message. It doesn't show on the computer.

I've found there are so many cases you never connect your DS to an AP
with the SSID visible even when you can play games on WFC perfectly.
It's because Wi-Fi lib 0.3 doesn't get you connected.
Its DHCP may not work properly.

#81728 - jakubowski - Mon May 01, 2006 7:50 pm
Just so you guys know, I registered NDSMAIL.net and will get a SMTP server up and running on it. I will make it so that DS's can connect to it, as well as have web based mail on the website and try to make the design look like a DS.
if bronto wants to help with this or make a NDSMAIL.net setup in the client that would be great. since not all users can save their config on the DS, we could have support so that you just type your NDSMAIL name and password and select something that says ure at NDSMAIL.net and it would know the rest of the settings. just an idea. ill get working on this server after work.

Quigoni, you set WEP on?
When you disable WEP, Wi-Fi lib 0.3 test says "connected"?
And you can get DNS info correctly on DNS Test with it?
Wi-Fi lib 0.3 says "connected" even if you have wrong Nintendo WFC settings when WEP is on. Thus check DNS Test.

True, but IMAP is better for checking mail from a location other than one's home PC because it generally isn't configured to remove mail from the server when downloading it.

Yeah cause like on GMails POP3 you choose if it deletes the mail or not when accessed by POP3. Which ill have it not delete the mail when NDSMail works with SSL ;)

I've been busy the last days, but I hope this will change during the week.
I also hope for a bugfix release of dswifi, which will ndsmail more usable. RSS will most likely be included in the next version.
#82707 - Nushio - Mon May 08, 2006 8:35 pm
RSS & SSL FTW!
err...
I'm just waiting for SSL to be done, which I hope it will be soon ;)
#82891 - Bronto - Thu May 11, 2006 1:23 am
NDSMail 0.40
Newsfeed (RSS/ATOM)support
You can set up the feeds you want to read in the settings / feed settings menu. NDSMail also looks for a file called ndsmail.fed in the flash card's root directory. ndsmail.fed is a text file, each line contains the URL (full URL with http://) to a RSS or ATOM feed.
To download the feeds, press on the <Inbox> button in the main screen to switch to <Feeds> mode, then press Receive.
Please note that I did not disable the New/Reply buttons in feed mode yet, pressing them will give unpredictable results.
I added 2 feeds as defaults so you can test it right away.
Bug where settings file got corrupted should be fixed (can't test it)
Shows status while connecting to access point
Some mail display bugs fixed
Many more things I can't remember
Note that most bugs with incomplete/corrupted messages are because of a bug in dswifi which will be fixed soon.

Damn dude....idk what to say. This is great!
Thank you!!

NDSMail 0.41
- correctly converts some tags like <br />, so mail/feed display is a lot nicer.
- file writing probably did not work at all in 0.40
- better error handling / access point reconnect
- default settings in nds file, so users without filesystem support can hex-edit their settings
For those who are waiting for SSL, it will not happen before the release of a new version of dswifi.
As always, I'm working on cool new features, stay tuned :)
Download is at the old location,

#83023 - Bronto - Fri May 12, 2006 3:06 am
do you know a good feed with e3 news?

:(
Oh, how I wish my router talked to WifiLib.
I told myself that patience was the key; after all, it's still version 0.3... but with all these great things it's getting really hard to wait!

Well, i've been trying many feeds, but they seem to be incompatible at the moment with this program. The only one that worked so far is 4 color Rebellions. But they don't update as much or as fast as joystiq and others.

odd..that link triggers an empty downlaod for me.
Annoyingly, I cant test this app as
a) Hotmail dosnt like to give pop3 anymore
b) Gmail uses SLL
c) My own domain's email is down for some reason.

~sigh~
#83460 - MechaBouncer - Tue May 16, 2006 2:20 pm
Sorry about that. I guess I should have tried it in another browser. IE6 does that in typical Internet Exploder fashion. Firefox and Opera seem to work fine, however. Although can NDSmail access webmail like that, or does it need to be POP3?

MechaBouncer:NDSMail only supports POP3
to all:
I'm working on SSL and multi account capability at the moment. I'm not sure how to include it best into the user interface.
What about this:
I change the <Inbox> (<Feeds>) button to a button or drop down list that lets you choose an account/feed you want to display.
Or should I put all Mail/Feeds in a "global" mail folder, and let the user mark the accounts for which email is always received in the settings menu, and extend the Receive button to a drop down list where the user can chose between "Receive all","Receive:bluebottle" etc ?
#84064 - ChronoDK - Sat May 20, 2006 12:04 pm
Not sure what is the best thing to do, but you need to streamline the interface a bit. I find the app hard to use and very unintuitive. Well, not exactly hard... but seeing it has a graphical user interface it could be made more userfriendly.
I assume the stability problems is due to WifiLib, so it might be out of your hands to improve that right now.
Anyway, its really nice to be able to check my mail anywhere now :-)
#84092 - daninski - Sat May 20, 2006 3:02 pm
ok, i'm using a supercard sd, i have to change the extention from .ds.gba to gba.nds to get this to run as the original.nds file wont start up. my problem is that the program freezes when i'm typing in my mail settings. this happens every time. i can normally get to account name and then it freezes.
#84330 - thundrestrike - Sun May 21, 2006 11:19 pm
whenever i login it says "Feed file could not be read"
EDIT: i fixed that by making my own FED file on the root of the CF (btw, does anyone know how to take off the two preset feeds?)
and when using this feed:
http://ds.qj.net/rss.xml
On NDS Mail, all i get when I try to read it is some weird text, its hard to explain
Try using that feed and see if it works for you.
Also, it won't let me write the feed settings to the CF
(flashed DS, supercard CF)
plz help!

Hi folks,
new version out!
- Supercard SD Write support
- Settings-stuff fixed
- Improved feed support (now even displays most HTML feeds)
- uses the latest version of dswifi
- misc. bugfixes
Have fun, and please report any feeds that do not work

#84670 - daninski - Wed May 24, 2006 1:50 am
still freezing when i'm putting the mail settings [supercard sd/dslite/datel thingy]
i have to rename the .ds.gba file .nds to work on it by the way, not sure f that makes a difference?
#84671 - Kvasir - Wed May 24, 2006 2:00 am
I can save settings to the cfg file just fine on my SCSD. Fetching mail froze up again, though. rmh stage, grabbing the first of two mails on the server. Probably nothing though.
#84672 - Bronto - Wed May 24, 2006 2:03 am
daninski:
what does it say on the top screen?
you have to rename .ds.gba to .nds for supercard, that's correct
kvasir:
what mail service are you using again?
#84673 - daninski - Wed May 24, 2006 2:08 am
well it just freezes and the one key i last pressed stays lit on the keyboard. the top screen doesn't change; it's still the old field/new field. in the mail settings this is.
#84674 - Bronto - Wed May 24, 2006 2:16 am
you mean when you press key quickly? that seems to be a bug in palib. I'm currently looking for another (bigger) keyboard.
#84675 - daninski - Wed May 24, 2006 2:22 am
oooh, ok. let me try again. so i hold the key down rather than tap?
Update: ok, i typed with a count of one potato ( :P ) between each key press and one potato holding down the key press and it still freezes. i guess i'll have to wait for the bigger keyboard implementation.
one suggestion though. when you pick the field to enter a setting, it's be nice to be ale to place where you want the cursor with the stylus within the chosen field.

#85298 - thundrestrike - Sun May 28, 2006 7:58 pm
i got a suggestion for feeds
can you put some sort of divider bettween the multiple feed websites? its very complicated to tell which entry is from which blog
kindof like this:
Quote: |
(feed from stephen stair blog)
(feed from stephen stair blog)
(feed from stephen stair blog)
----------------------------------------- (divider line that would help)
(feed from Bronto's NDS Mail blog)
(feed from Bronto's NDS Mail blog)
(feed from Bronto's NDS Mail blog)
|
that would be very nice

what do you mean by the words I put in bold?
Does that mean you might keep it the same how it is?
I highly suggest the divider
or
I have another idea just incase the divider is not possible!
In the feeds screen, after you download them, have them into separate feed "folders", and when you open them up, it displays the feeds from that blog
Example:
Quote: |
-http:// FEED WEBSITE NAME HERE- (click this to view all entries from this feed)
-http:// feed website name here- |
both of these are good ideas, the divider, or the "folders"

Is it normal that almost all my messages give me a 'content type is not supported' error, even very short messages with only text.
Also, the only way I can start ndsmail on my m3 mini sd is by using the start button to open ndsmail.
One thing that really works great though are the rss feeds.

Are you sure that your e-mail client is set to send messages as text/plain, not text/html?

i actually got it to work with the new update on my sc mini on my ds lite. i did change the extension one with the .ds.gba to .nds to get it to work tho. still trying to get my mail as of this point but i at least i got the program to run on my ds lite with sc mini tho.
#85869 - sdsviet - Fri Jun 02, 2006 7:51 pm
so i've been trying to get the mail to work. first i tried the fat format and it doesnt let me recieve anything. i so did the disable fat format and with the two default feeds i got the second one to work. i also put in my own feed and got that to work too. since it was disable fat i had to setup my mail settings. while doing the setup the program seems to crash b4 i get to finish and try out the settings. at first i thought it was from tapping the keyboard too fast that was making it crash but even if i did it slow it still crashes so after about 6 tries of trying to setup mail and having it crash everytime i dont know if i will ever get it to work
#85874 - sdsviet - Fri Jun 02, 2006 8:17 pm
weird that after a millions tries it didnt work and now the enable fat format works fine. hehe i dont get it
so now i got the emails to work but is there a way to save the mail or do i have to recieve it everytime i use the prog. also can i delete the mails? because my hotpop account saves all the mails on the server and i want to delete it when i read it so i dont have to re-recieve again all the time. i used to be able to do it with my smartphone b4 it died on me.
UPDATE!
found another bug in the feed area. long addresses seems to cause problems when trying to recieve feeds. i had two xanga feeds in there and the one with the short name worked and the long name caused all the other feeds to not work too. and when u go to the feed settings the long address doesnt show up on the list either but when u recieve feeds it shows up as one of the feeds. i think its something having to do with the long address being longer than the one line display in the feed settings maybe like if its longer than what can be displayed it wont work/?
#85886 - sdsviet - Fri Jun 02, 2006 9:21 pm
anyone got any feeds from these sites to work
fatwallet
spoofee
slickdeals
i've been trying the feeds that the sites itself is giving but they arent working
#85893 - spacepirate - Fri Jun 02, 2006 10:39 pm
Works fine on my Supercard SD. Write support for the feed settings would be nice, as I don't believe it's been implemented yet, and also Gmail support... but that's probably not possible with the current wifilib.

I just uploaded NDSMail 0.44
Changes:
- Uses latest dswifi version
- Improved connection code - should be faster & more reliable now
- Put keep-ap-connection-alive function back in
- mail display slightly improved
- asks you if you want to save your settings when leaving the settings screen
- reply button disabled for feeds
As you certainly noticed, progress is a little slow lately. I'm quite busy with other things at the moment, so no SSL yet. I would probably need about 1-2 free days for a first version. I'm planning to make it available in some way to other DS developers once it's done :)
http://www.bronto-online.de/ndsmail_prev.zip
spacepirate:
feed settings save support was already included, but you had to go to the mail settings and press select. it's more convenient now ;)
sdsviet:
haven't tried your feeds yet, but I will try to get them to work in the next version as I'm trying to support every feed available
long addresses/strings are indeed a problem. I will work on this when I include a cursor..
FouLu1510:
please try the latest version, perhaps there were some connection problems. also try to send a mail to yourself using ndsmail
thundrestrike:
divider is a great idea, I might do that :) My idea was to keep them in separate folders
asgatlat:
many feeds only only include the first 4-5 lines of the message, for the rest you have to visit their website.
another reason could be that the feed is too large. NDSMail currently has a size limit for feeds.

Ah, I see. Sorry for the mistake. New version works great, though. My compliments to the chef.

I apologize in advance for my ignorance on this subject and for my stupid question and all, but what exactly does a feeder thingymajig do? And how is it set up? I went on Wikipedia to find out and it keeps talking about Atom(What is that?) and RSS (like i know what that is...) But also, if i understand correctly, Atom is used in GMail and Blogger.
So what is the giant deal about this Atom/RSS thing.
Oh, and SSL? WHAT IS THIS! I know it has to do with GMail, but thats it.
Oh, and is this compatible with Yahoo Mail?
Thanks a bunch in advanced! (I feel really really stupid and very confused!)

RSS and Atom are both ways of getting information, such as news, from a site. Take www.drunkencoders.com for example. They have an RSS feed, so if you entered that RSS feed's URL into ndsmail, it would download all of the news items from drunkencoders. If you keep that feed, then whenever you clicked retrieve (or whatever the button is), it would download all of the new news items from the site. So, in summary, it's just an easy way of getting news from a site.
SSL is a way of securely transmitting data over the internet. Since it's "encrypted", so to speak, it's a bit more sophisticated then normal internet traffic and thus it's not really supported by the current wifi library for the DS. Since gmail requires you to use SSL to connect to their email servers, you can't access your gmail account through ndsmail. I don't think this is compatible with yahoo mail, unless you can find a way to access your yahoo mail through a POP server, which yahoo disables for their free accounts, i believe.
As for online content, just about anything you could ever want to know about has an RSS feed or an Atom feed (note that the two terms aren't interchangeable). To sign up for it, all you do is enter the URL of the feed into a feeder, such as ndsmail.
I hope this helps to answer some of your questions!

I just tried the latest NDSMail on my Original DS, SCSD, Passme and but unfortunately it no workee.
I've just had a quick search through this forum regarding my router (WRT54G), and it appears there is a bug in the wifi lib that stops them from working. NDSMail boots fine, but when it tries connecting to the access point I don't think it ever receives an ip via dhcp. I'm going to try it tonight using a static address to see if that fixes it.
Cheers!

Gmail wont work because SSL isnt built into NDSMail yet (thats the only thing thats stopping me from using NDSMail right now)

so i tried this new one out. and the first thing i noticed is that the touchscreen is very unresponsive when im try to use the interface. i have to click sometimes 5-10 times to get the button to respond usually at least 3. also my feed doesnt work anymore either. keeps saying cant resolve host name. my mail isnt working either but i also tried it on my phone and it doesnt work. at first it was retrieving and then it crashed halfway thru and now it says it cant access my account. wat is this new wifilib u guys keep talking about. is that like the engine that is running it? do i have to install it in the card or is it built in on the ndsmail.nds file already?
update:
so i got soem of the feeds working nad hte mail just started working again. altho the interface is still giving me problems. i still have to hit the buttons at least 3 times to get it to work.

Sorry everyone, but could anyone help me out? How do you set nds mail to work on a SCSD mini? The following is exactly what I have done.
1) I put ndsmail.sc.nds in one of my folders (called Homebrew) on the secure digital card.
2) I edited the config file using a word processor:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
original Edit
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
pop.test.com www.bluebottle.com
110 110
testuser jbullfrog
testpass (my password)
smtp.test.com www.bluebottle.com
25 25
name@test.com jbullfrog@bluebottle.com
NDS Mail User Name jeremy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Bluebottle supports POP and SMTP (I have no clue what these 2 things mean, but I know bluebottle supports both: http://www.emailaddresses.com/email_pop.htm)
3) I edited the .fed file
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
original
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://blog.bronto-online.de/atom.xml
http://blog.akkit.org/feed/
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
edited version (I erased the two default ones, and added my own)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://news.com.com/2547-1_3-0-20.xml
http://www.npr.org/rss/rss.php?id=1001
http://www.npr.org/rss/rss.php?mostEmailed=1
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/rss/technology/index.xml
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4)I then put the edited config file and the .fed file into the same folder as I put ndsmail.sc.nds (The folder called Homebrew)
I have tried putting the config file and the .fed file into my root folder, but that hasn't helped either.
Also, does SCSD mini enable FAT support?
Help please! I have tried my best to explain what I have done.
P.S It would be great to have a tutorial for getting ndsmail to work on all the different types of backup devices.
#89262 - MaHe - Fri Jun 23, 2006 9:34 pm
The configuration files must be placed in the root.
Don't edit them!
Place NDSMail.sc.nds anywhere on the miniSD and run it. First, it will ask for FAT support. Click 'Yes' and then go to the settings - you can change everything there.
EDIT: And take a look here:

Bronto, ssl should be your primary focus, but please do something about the interface too.
I wouldn't mind a nice gui beup-style,but please do something to change the font.
It's so tiny it becomes very hard to read mail/feeds...
I would like to see a TO DO list on your site too!
Thx :)
#89376 - Bronto - Sat Jun 24, 2006 4:32 pm
It seems there are some problems with M3. Don't have access to one, so I can't test, but I read other apps have problems too (probably FAT related).
Is anyone else experiencing touchscreen inaccuracy or bad responsiveness?
Red XIII:
the problem with the font is that the ds only has a limited display resolution. So if I used a bigger font, there would fit less characters on the screen and you would have to scroll around a lot. Personally, I think the font is a good compromise. What do the others think?
What would you like to see changed about the gui?

too, but take your time to get a nice build ready.
#89715 - Red XIII - Mon Jun 26, 2006 1:27 pm
Well...
1)About the kinda tiny font, you could always use the other font, the bigger one, that you use for your tabs (eg Receive,New,Reply,Settings etc).I think that's big enough.
2)When you mention that you will have to scroll around a lot when using a bigger font, you surely mean it will happen when viewing feeds, right? So,I think I've got an idea:
3)The way it presents feeds is not very practical,I mean seperators are good for feeds with not many posts ,but if you have a site like ign or revo-europe,with over 50 feeds,it becomes an enormous list that needs constant scrolling.Scrolling is not 100% accurate, either. So,how about using tabs instead? One tab per feed. Simple and practical.
4)I think it would be better to have two different tabs <Inbox> and <Feeds> to switch ,instead of one.
5)In the mail settings menu, the field where you type "25",you know, next to where you type the SMTP server,is kinda out of place, not in the same line.
6)I use a SC SD,and it's kinda annoying selecting yes,to enable FAT support, every time I start NDSMail. Can you do something about it?
7)There is a bug in the "manage email accounts" menu, when I touch and hold the stylus inside the account window (but not selecting one) a part at the top of the screen becomes white, covering my accounts. When I stop touching the screen the fat white line disappears.
8)The scroll bar is not very practical, please make it bigger and give it a little more room to the left.
9)When downloading feeds, something like "Received: 536 (total 8568) bytes" appears. But the feed's total size of bytes is actually the bytes you've downloaded so far,so how about getting the feed's total size before downloading, and then showing it in a downloaded so far/total size format,eg 8568/12000 or something like that.
10)When I've downloaded my feeds, next to the feeds tab it shows "61 mails(1 new)". This should become "61 feeds",or even "61 feeds from 4 sources",or something better.
11)Bug: Sometimes when I receive my emails, the I switch to feeds,I receive my feeds, then when I switch back to my inbox, "ERROR: mail can't be displayed (RM02)" is displayed.
12)When I receive my inbox, some numbers appear in the top left corner of the upper screen, when the download is finished a "X -11992" is displayed there. When I touch the screen it's gone.
13) As for gui,you could always have nicer tabs and window outlines, but ssl comes first.
I'm off to lunch.

Great work on NDSMail and I look forward to SSL support... I have a question though..I have Max Media Player with the 4GB HDD but and NDSmail works fine when Fat is not enabled (Crashes if I enable it), however it doesn't read the ndsmail.cfg file, whether its with the binary or in the root of the drive. It works fine if I enter details manually...
Anyone else used this combination of drive. Its running on a DS Lite

If you are brave and want to help me out, please try this ssl test version of NDSMail
Please note
*if you are using GMAIL, be sure to enable pop access AND to KEEP your mails when downloaded via pop3(see below)
*there are quite a few debug messages leftin. I will remove them once ssl proves to be stable until then you have to press "OK" or the a-button a lot
*the SSL setting is not being saved to the config file in this version. however, ssl will automatically be enabled when the pop port is 995
*only servers with a 1024 bit RSA key are supported (I haven't seen a mail server with another key size anyways)
hoping for feedback..
http://bronto-online.de/ndsmail_ssltest.zip
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
edit on gmail:
the mails are not really lost, you can restore them by going to the settings menu, selecting "Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)" and clicking save changes.

SSL version's working for me for receipt from gmail. Did a test message of a couple characters then one of 200 and both came through perfectly.
However, for sending I got a lot of Receive Error dialogues to "ok" past, then got "530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first [alphanumeric string varying with each attempt]" After a few of those and a truncated "530 5.7.0 . . . invalid command" dialog, attempt fails.

web based email, like Hotmail, uses a different protocol than POP3, called IMAP. I don't know the difficulty in writing in IMAP support, but he'd have to add support for that protocol before Hotmail worked, but the added benefit would be support for numerous other web based email solutions.

I want to share my experience with this app.
I've got a DSL with a M3 slim SD and i can run the .ds.gba file perfectly (.nds doesn't boot). I just tried the application again 10 minutes ago.. It had trouble finding my router or something, but it did grant me acces to the mail & feeds.. When i tried to download the feeds the app froze and i rebooted my DS..
The m3 always makes a back-up, but this time the screen had weird colors & glitches.. I couldn't see anything of the whole m3 interface.. Lucky for me i know the interface by head and i managed to change the interface style back to the orginal.. I deleted the mail application, but now i can't open all my maps on my m3... My DS keeps freezing when i try to open certain maps.. JIPPIE!!
When i try to delete the map that makes my DS freeze windows tells me that the map is damaged and can't be deleted. The SD-cart also keeps creating new ndsmail.cfg, ndsmail.fed & ndsmail_ssl.ds.gba files (all 0 kb). Can't delete them either..
Meeeh... Time for a format.
#90862 - Bronto - Mon Jul 03, 2006 12:46 am
BMH: sorry to hear that! what are the maps you are talking about ? this sounds like the FAT filesystem of your sd card got corrupted.

#90877 - ThetaDot - Mon Jul 03, 2006 4:20 am
I'm using what you released last night (the one with less debug messages).
Have trouble with it freezing. It always occurs on text entry with the keypad and stylus. I'll be typing letters and all of a sudden it will freeze up, with the last letter I hit stuck in its redish highlight.
I was lucky and was able to set up a new entity, and put in all the gmail settings before it froze, and it receives mail very nicely.
(Update: Apparently it can crash on any button press with the stylus -- not just when typing letters into the keyboard)
(and for reference I'm using an M3 SD adapter)
Update 2: If I send a test message to the gmail account, grab it with NDSmail, and restart the DS, I cannot again retrieve that message. Are you telling it to only get what hasn't been read yet? Is it possible to save downloaded messages locally to the DS?
Do you have any plans to allow the deleting of messages off the server or locally off the DS?
Is the "Do you want to use FAT" window supposed to come up every time when starting NDSmail?
Also, just have to say thanks man. This is the sole-reason I spent money on the passcard and the GBA cart and SD card. I live and die by email, and this will help me out a lot.

With my SCSD mini with the latest ndsmail version, .47, I can't get gmail to work!
(I am able to get rss feeds which shows that there isn't a connection problem)
I entered my POP address and SMP as www.gmail.com
I entered my user name: jeremiahlibullfrog
I entered my password : (secret)
I put my display name: Jeremy
I changed the ports as 110 and 25
I checked the ssl box
I keep getting socket connection failed! What does that mean?
Can anyone who got gmail to work post their exact settings?

also, it should be pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, not just www.
Configuring other mail clients
You can use the following information to configure POP with many mail clients. If you encounter difficulties, we suggest contacting your mail client's customer support department for further instructions.
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - requires SSL: pop.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 995
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
Port: 465 or 587
Account Name: your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com')
Email Address: your full Gmail email address (username@gmail.com)
Password: your Gmail password
Please note that if your client does not support SMTP authentication, you won't be able to send mail through your client using your Gmail address.

I have a suggestion Bronto. A larger scroll bar would be helpful in the rss feeds. I keep scratching my dsl stylus against the area where the screen meets the case.
Also,as people have said larger font on the text would help the eyes out!
You have done amazing work. I salute you sir!
One more thing. How come sometimes I get a message "socket connection failed!" Other times, I receive my gmail fine? I am using a SCSD mini.
I have 995 as my POP port and 465 as my stmp port.

It will use the same settings you have used for a wifi game.... Mario Kart etc... so if you have enabled wep there... then it will use WEP for NDSMail

Great program Bronto, very handy - just got one request for you:
Can you make it possible to see the status of access points? E.g. I'm in a mall cafe and there are multiple wireless routers around, but I cant see which ones are encrypted/locked.
Being able to see if there are any unprotected points available (when you press START) would be really helpful.
Is this possible?
#91357 - spacepirate - Thu Jul 06, 2006 5:56 pm
Checking my gmail account works great. I can't send anything, though.

Thanks for this wonderful app.
SSL works great with my gmail account.
But i think you didn't set up an authentification for the SMTP.
Am i right? Is it a big deal to implement it? Because it would be so nice to send emails when im in holiday ;)
#91635 - tepples - Sat Jul 08, 2006 2:09 pm
SMTP-AUTH on Wikipedia links to six RFCs that specify SMTP-AUTH and related protocols.

So? Do you want to say that its very complicated to set up an SMTP-AUTH connection?
Well then maybe i should lool out for a freemailer without authentification.. wonder if something like that still exists ^^
EDIT: well, i thought about it.. i could use any mailserver with smtp, and send a email with my email adress couldn't i? only the header would point that its not from gmail..
ill give it a try

deshi wrote: |

Not really. As I understand it, SMTP-AUTH largely consists of sending the account name and password before the headers. I just wanted to have all the info in one place when the developer gets around to reading this topic.

Bronto did mail sending work with your gmail account?
#91695 - miracleropit - Sat Jul 08, 2006 9:34 pm
Hi, this program looks wonderful, but cannot connect through my router properly. With WEP on or off, it always gets to ACQUIRINGDHCP and then CANNOTCONNECT. It have a Linksys and can play wifi games as well as use SylphIRC ok!
Looking forward to that update!!

NDSMail 0.47 is up at http://bronto-online.de/ndsmail.zip
* SSL support! This means GMAIL is finally supported (incl. sending mails)
* fixed "ERROR: mail can't be displayed (RM02)" when switching between mails and feeds
* added button/tab for feeds
* added checkbox element
* info screen with update function
* download mail manually (A-Button) working again (verify)
* latest wifi lib
TODO:
GUI fixes
Improve HTML parser and display HTML mails
include new (bigger) keyboard
find better font + include international font support
feed settings screen seems to have problems
extend access point selection screen
update function
jpg support
.nds attachment support
#91741 - Mr. Picklesworth - Sun Jul 09, 2006 4:04 am
Sounds good :)
I'm trying it now... will report back in a bit.
Edit:
Trying to connect to GMail, it sits for a bit on wait_hello while Connecting to the mail server, then the connection times out.
Top screen says: "ERROR: mail can't be displayed (RM02)"
I have POP enabled, and other mail clients like Thunderbird work fine.
Wifi lib appears to be in working order, as it can recieve feeds.
Could the problem possibly be the result of me having thousands of messages in the archive?
(For some irritating reason, it's treated as the same folder as the Inbox in most mail clients).
Trying to send mail, I get:
Quote: |
--mailfrom error--
530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first y21sm1783889pyd |
Same error message is also repeated with these titles, too
rctp to error
DATA error
send error

Holy Moly! now these 3 are gonna be cool!
That would be pretty cool to E-mail my DS some homebrew ;D
Is JPG support going to work in feeds, also?
That would be perfect-o!

NDSMail 0.47 starts up and connects fine on my Supercard SD, I set up my mail settings fine, but as soon as I try to check my mail the progress bar comes up and it hangs for a while, then I get "socket connect failed." I've had no problems with 0.45. Just to let everybody know. Anybody else had problems with Supercard SD?
#91764 - Bronto - Sun Jul 09, 2006 12:59 pm
Mr. Picklesworth:
did you set the smtp port to 465 ?

had the exact same error
went to the settings and checked the "SSL-Checkbox" also changed the SMTP-Port from 587 to 465. Some error messages appeared, but the email arrived :)
Good job Bronto!
Edit: the programm also froze.. but who cares, i can send emails via my DS :)
Edit2: had a nother go, works perfect now, the error messages were no real errors, just debug messages and infos about the closed connection after the sending
Edit3: wow so many edits.. well better then then triple posting..
for some reason ndsmail is only able to recive emails which have not been sent by ndsmail o.O or is it my imagination.. i tried to recive emails from my gmail accoun, whose inbox was full of unopedned test-messages i wrote from my ds.. and ndsmail wasnt able to recive them..
even tried the 0.46 version, but didn't work either.
but when i sent an email from an other email adress to my gmail account nds got it perfectly..
really wired ^^
#91790 - Mr. Picklesworth - Sun Jul 09, 2006 4:59 pm
Changing SSL port to 465 helps, but the connection still times out as before with recieving messages.
I guess it could be my router freaking out...

I sent myself (and someone else) a mail from my DS, and got the same kind of deal deshi encountered, the messages I mean. Indeed it sent the mail to the accounts, but I can only see the one I sent to myself from the Gmail site, if I try to download the message with NDSMail it doesn't detect it or something. I haven't read it yet, so it's still unmarked.

Hi
I set up my wifi connect on my tetris ds game and it's set up perfectly (i disabled WEP for testing ndsmail with gmail compatability). When I try to connect to the access point through ndsmail (the latest version) it says aquiring DHCP for about 2 minutes then it says could not connect to AP. How do I fix this??
Thanks :D

can i ask someone a simple favor please :)
I want a G-Mail account for use with NDSMail, but I don't have a cell-phone lol.
Can someone please send me an email invitation to G-mail at "Thundrestrike@hotmail.com"? (thats spelled 100% correct, its thundREStrike, not thundERStrike)
Please, its simple. Thank you, fellow GBAdev'rs!
Please send me a PM once you have invited me
Way to go, Bronto! I love NDSmail and hope to enjoy it more with G-Mail! :D
EDIT:
Thank you, gbadev'rs! I have recieved 4 invites to G-Mail, and I can only choose one. Thank you all who have helped me! My new NDSmail account is misterchubby@gmail.com
interesting name i chose, huh? :D

didn't get the mail i sent from my ds to my own address though, well.. dont care, why should i want to revice emails on my ds, i wrote on my ds ^^
My wishlist:
-cursor (very important ^^)
-adressbook
-saving emails (not all, just the one wich are important)
-get rid of all the message box ;) one "Email has been sent" would be nice ^^ but its probably for debug reasons..

321 emails here! though... that might have been a mistake... now I've gotta figure out how to get GMail to ONLY allow pop3 on certain e-mails, I'd like to keep some notifications off my DS... too bad NDSMail doesn't allow for tags like Gmail... though perhaps folders? (I never saw an option).

I am having the same problem as dragonman.. I can use Tetris, Mario Kart etc with my router without problems with or without WEP, and some other homebrew Wifi apps like SylphIRC, however ndsmail stalls at acquiring DHCP. I haven't tried other routers yet, so it could be specific to our linksys routers (dragonman- do you have a linksys?). But the fact that other homebrew wifi apps work suggests this can be fixed.

I have a linksys wrt54g v5 and it works fine (Connection wise)....... never had a hassle
#91985 - Mr. Picklesworth - Mon Jul 10, 2006 11:32 pm
Try this:
Get the latest firmware update from Linksys
Backup your settings.
Apply your backed up settings.
I found that the router needed to be shaken around a bit for the new firmware to start to work :)
(It works great with homebrew now, with WEP and everything!)
I'd recommend using a static IP in the DS's settings, though.
To do that, just use the Wifi config in an official online game and tell it to not manually acquire IP address.
The WRT54g will automatically to DNS stuff, so just set your DNS to the gateway IP. (Generally something like 192.168.1.1)

Woohoo, it works!
I can recieve, and reply to messages in Gmail.
I just forgot to look back into the settings menu and tick the SSL box with the new version.
Found two crashes:
It froze after replying to a message and trying to recieve messages again.
The other crash was while messing about with the Feeds settings. I'll see if I can pinpoint it.

morrob

smtp.gmail.com
465
morrob@gmail.com
rob

the SSL box has an X in it.
I'm using a DS lite with lite flashme and Supercard SD with latest FW.
The RSS feeds work only. When I try to connect, I get a debug window saying "SSL_connect returned:1" followed be a receive error saying "errno:104"
#93258 - spacepirate - Tue Jul 18, 2006 2:59 am
You're using the sc.nds version, right? If so, your settings are the same as mine and we have the same configuration. the SSL_connect returned:1 message is normal, you get that when ssl works. I'm guessing the problem is in your router, or your wifi settings. Are you connecting using DHCP? Do you have any security options enabled on your router such as WEP?

I converted my Nintendo USB wifi to a Soft AP. It can't be this since other homebrew has no prob accessing it such as DSorganizer.

the username needs to include "@gmail.com."
edit: also, on the latest version, whenever i start it up and connect right away, it says "connected" and "associated" on the top screen, and then on the bottom screen it asks about FAT support. I click yes, and then it freezes with "connected!" and "associated" on the top screen, and nothing on the bottom.

You don't need "@gmail" in your username, by the way.
I'm guessing it's something with SoftAP, since we both have the same DS configuration. I would try setting your DS's wifi settings up manually, though.

is hotmail mail compatible also is this a huge size when it is put on a cf card? is it big in Megabytes maybe it could be slightly reduce so that it is easier to use on a smaller cf/sd card.

config files have to be in the root directory
the keep-alive function causes NDSMail to crash on some systems. I will make it optional in the next version

Another question....when I try to recieve mails...I get "SSL_connect returned:1." Then it starts to download some emails....but only about a 5th of the ones in there. Finally...they all read 32. I saw something about it in this thread but it wasn't really explained...what's goin on?

SSLConnect is just a debugging flag he probably forgot to remove.
32 (plus 10) is the meaning of life, the universe and everything.
32 alone and by itself is almost that, except that instead of being the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, 32 means that we cant read HTML emails (such as gmail's emails), so he probably left a flag there as well.
Until a basic HTML parser is written for NDSMail, you can access GMail and send email, and even receive it, you just wont be able to read it... for now.

Welcome back! I just started using this program and have a few questions or possibly additions to your todo list.
Are you implimenting a "Reply All" function? I tend to send/recieve a lot of group e-mails among friends and this would be usefull.
Also, are there plans on working out the crashing bugs that happen when using the touch screen? Supremely frustrating when half way through an e-mail.
Great program though and I look forward to upcomming releases. Thanks for developing this!

Hello,
When I try to delete an email (by pressing the X button), I get the following error:
write:open file
could not open file
Am I doing something wrong or is it a bug?
PS: I'm Using a nintendo DS and to open nds mail I use the file .sc.nds (I have a supercard SD)

Hi,
I was wondering is this application supports Hotmail accounts and if so how i would go about configuring it to do so.
Finally can you read mail from more than one account at a time or do you have to individually log into each account.
Many Thanks, Tom

This is a nice looking app, but definitely has some sort of problem...at least with the SC miniSD/DS Lite combo I own. The program consistently freezes up when entering text information.

uhm, X does not delete an email, it is just a debugging function which doesn't do anything useful for you ;)

SC-CF DS fat flashed here.
Text inputing also locks a lot here. Looks like it's caused by the on screen keyboard. Some use of it after the first. I coud enter a long RSS feed in it as the first time upon booting.
Everytime i boot, the question for enabling FAT comes up, can i hide it manualy in any CFG file?
Some option to change font size would be wellcome also.
But, wonderful app so far, keep up the great work.
EDIT:
This feed couldn't be opened here:

I'm using an M3 SD. it used to work fine, but in one of the newer verions the FAT doesn't work.

Good to see you working on a new release.
SC SD,unfortunately it doesn't work.
ndsmail.nds shows the message Donkey Wrestler quoted.
ndsmail_new.nds boots, but apparently it doesn't enable fat when I press "Yes" at the Welcome window.Lots of error messages, can't read .cfg and .fed files.
Btw,tried both files both from SC menu and moonshell menu.

Supercard CF in a phat jap DS here.
NDSMAIL.NDS ives the ARM7 thing. Used ndsmail_new.nds.
Wrote it in a log fashion:
Code: |
-> Do you want to enable FAT suport?
<- YES
-> ERROR

-> DEBUG
 pop.gmail.com

-> READ
 http://blog.akkit.org/feed |
After it, i see the "wellcome" e-mail, a "what's new" email, plus 12 empty ones (same content as the "wellcome").
In feeds tab i can press the "transmit" button and receive and read it fine.
In "nisc settings", i check the cool "use bigger font for mail display" box, but itsn't saved when i press "back".
When i exit the config screen i see:
Code: |
-> DEBUG
 http://blog.bronto-online.de/atom.xml
-> DEBUG

-> DEBUG
 http://blog.akkit.org/feed
-> DEBUG

It tries to write the .FED file even if i don't edit feed options.
Could you add the first FAT question on the CFG, like FAT 1 | 0 ?
The "outbox" tab doesn't work, and i can't send anything (i know it's unfinished).
Some other things i see that i can't remember from the top of mind now.
Can't the configurations use a INI or XML style?
Add a option to receive, store in card and launch NDS files in attachments.
Nice app so far and i hope to see more updates, thank you.

I can confirm MasterMan's problems exactly, on SC CF.
It seems to be properly reading my config files with the FAT lib though, since it knows my email address.

Uploaded new version at http://bronto-online.de/ndsmail-new.zip
so you have something to play with while I am away next week.
If you click on "Save Mails" on the second button-page (yes, I will change the design), all mails and news items are saved to files on the flashcard in a convenient XML-file. Configuration file is now XML too.
Some things to note:
- SSL is broken at the moment, at least on my NDS phat / SCSD..
- "Delete" button has no effect
- when adding a new mail account, don't leave any fields blank, or saving will not work
- some strange bug (I think it has to do with the compiler, but I am not quite sure yet) causes the buttons in the settings screen to appear in a different color
- please ignore the "can't read ... file" messages, sometimes fread() returns incorrect values (0 although data is read)
other changes include new keyboard, new FAT lib, new wifi lib, new devkit and many more..
Sorry, no JPGs yet

Sounds good :)
Dont worry about Jpegs just yet, too much work.
In fact...dont worry about them at all....but a "Download Attachment to Flash" option would be nice.
The main thing is too get downloading, reading, and browseing emails as easy and as fast as possible :)
Everything else is just bells and whistles.

FYI I can't get the FatLib to work on my M3SD with a Kingston 1G card on a DS Lite.
I manually entered my settings to test it out and it doesn't seem to freeze up anymore which is great. It looks like with this update NDSMail is something I could really use a lot.
EDIT: Once again it is my Kingston card that is causing the problem. Works on M3SD with my SanDisk 256M. I knew $20 for a 1G card was too good to be true ;)

Hey Bronto.
I have been playin around with your latest release and I have noticed a few things and also have a question. My setup is in my sig:
* When I make a New e-mail I can't see the 'send' button or anything above the keyboard for that matter. It is all black, but if I touch where the 'send' should be it works
* the Outbox does not clear itself, so everytime you check your mail you are sending your entire outbox again
This may all be obvious to you already as it was a quick release for the fans ;) but I thought I would point it out.
Question: when I boot up NDSMail I get the folowing for the (Inbox, Outbox and Feeds)
"Folder file could not be opened!" followed by
"Error in folder: no root node" Anyway to fix this?
And finally a feature request for down the road. "Reply-all" I send a lot of group e-mails and would love to see this feature one day. Cheers. I really appreciate the program.

Some guy used it successfully some time ago on his no-fat flashcard. I can't test it myself, as I don't have an EZ4. What is the common pratice for storing settings in homebrew apps on EZ4 ?
#106267 - portezbie - Tue Oct 17, 2006 12:06 pm
not really sure, the no fat version of beup is jsut a ds.gba file and can save login info. Dsorganize reads from a text file, but ndsmail doesnt seem to be able to on the ez4 unless i am doing something comepltely wrong
#106268 - portezbie - Tue Oct 17, 2006 12:11 pm
is it supposed to read from the .fed and .cfg automatically on loading or maybe do u have to press somethign for that? maybe does it all have to be in the root folder? If there is something specific you need to be able to do this for the ez4. i could ask some of the ppl who code over at the ezflash forums?
#106270 - portezbie - Tue Oct 17, 2006 12:24 pm
i tried running it all from the root folder and that made no difference, so im not a programmer unfortunately but if you have any otehr suggestions or if there is anything i can do or find out or anyone i can talk to to help you make this work, thatd be awesome. but I understand you are busy and whatnot, and you dont own an ez4 which limits you. #106276 - Sektor - Tue Oct 17, 2006 1:21 pm
EZ4 and G6 are not compatible with FATlib/libFAT, so no homebrew can read or write to external files on those devices.

Hi,
it's been some time, but I am finally finishing a new version of NDSMail.
Please no posts to the news sites yet, I will notify them when this version proves to be stable.
I'm not even sure I remember everything I changed, but here are the main parts:
- dropped Palib, now using a new library based on libfb
- attachments (only jpg for now, but you will soon be able to save attachments to your memory card)
- all settings and mails are stored in XML files now
- many improvements to stability
- updated libraries
NDSMail now uses libfat which supports DLDI to support more flash devices (eg. EZ4)
http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI/
SSL is still broken unfortunately, but I think I will fix it soon
Get it here

Just for testing purpose, i've sent myself a simple mail with a JPG as attachment. 480x360x24 14.95KB. NDSMail shows the body text fine and a message tells it has a attatchment, press L to see it.
I press L, nothing happens.
0.54b not even shows the message.
<offtopic>
NDSMail and DSFTP should integrate in DSOrganize. Great apps.

Tested with Supercard SD, working fine. However it's a real shame SSL isn't supported...
Besides fixing SSL, the one big other thing I'd like to see changed is the prompt every time you load ndsmail, where it asks you if you want to use fat libs. It'd be nice if you could just go into settings and set it up one time so it wouldn't have to come up every time.
Cool program! :) Huge improvement over 0.47 (which is what i was using before)!

The problem is that the setting has to be stored somewhere. And the only reasonable way to store settings is the fatlib. But as almost all devices are supported by libfat now, I think I can remove the question soon.

Got the JPG to display by sending me a 232x203x24 as attachment, when i press L, the image appears fine.
But, if i turn off and on my DS the attachment has gone. The mail itself is stored in inbox, with no attachments.
Also, if i send me a mail with 2 JPGs, NDSMail can't retrieve the message from server.
I did it from gmail page for my yahoo account.

No homebrew supports the USB adapter. Turn it into a soft AP, or get a real router.

Uh, you need a WiFi hotspot (for example a router or a softAP-ed WiFi PCI card)?

Or a McDonald's restaurant with Wayport Wi-Fi. It is rumored that if you play an official WFC game first, you can get free Wi-Fi on the same DS.

Bronto, could you fix the RSS reader so it parses HTML right? As display "<br>" tags as "\n" or "<a href=*></a>" as simply underlined text, pretty please?
And so, could it (only the RSS reader) be made in a DSOrganize 2.41b plugin? Like one of those two unused buttons on DSO could be the RSS reader. It's feasible?

Whoa, thats a great idea if its possible.

Could you extend that you think?
eg, If a play has payed for Wi-Fi, yet is arranged to be free for the DS, could you change your laptops mac-address to the same as hte DS's...then play the DS, then boot your laptop up and surf?
Would something so sneaky actualy work?

Does NDSMail version .47 have 0.3c DSwifi and DLDI?
The reason I am asking is because it doesn't load up automatically on my ds lite. (my ds lite was recently purchased, so it needs DSWifi 0.3c)
The new DSLive Weather with 0.3 DSWifi loads up perfectly. I don't need to configure any settings. It automatically connects.
Before DSWifi 0.3c was implemented into DSLive Weather, I could not connect. Now I can.
Any help? BTW, I have a M3 Simply and an Onyx DS Lite
#116527 - Bronto - Fri Jan 26, 2007 4:06 pm
Next version of NDSMail will have dswifi 0.3c. DLDI is already supported in the latest version. I hope the next release will have most features working (especially SSL and attachment display). Unfortunately there are still some issues I have to sort out, and I don't have too much time at the moment :/
#116537 - jbullfrog - Fri Jan 26, 2007 4:54 pm
thanks bronto. I 'll be looking fowards to your next release
No WOnder I couldn't get it working on my new ds lite.

Hi,
it's been some time, but I am finally finishing a new version of NDSMail.
Get it here

I'm getting a 404 on this file, is anybody else having more luck?

Working well with my DS-X. (mail and feeds recieved, emails replied to fine) Like the menu button movment at the bottom.
Any plans to keep the Inbox/Outbox etc files in a folder off the root rather than in the root as now? Would be handy to keep everything tidy.
Some issues:
-Why does it always as you to enable fat support, can it not tell if you have already said yes? (or have I got a logic loop, in that it can't tell unless it check the drive...and it can't check the drive 'til FAT is enabled?)
- Loses mail/feed count on restart
- if more than 9 feeds posts/emails the number spils over the box
- long email addresses spill over to the date field
- My wiki's Atom page goes a 404 and caused the feeds count to go to -1 (seems to be the & is being dropped by the app)
- How about jumping the active selection down to the body of an email when replying rather than to the first field as is now?
- Outbox count doesn't clear even after message has been sent
- what's the limit on email size? SOme large text emails just say "ERROR: mail can't be displayed RM01)"
- Download an email, delete it, stlect transmit, the deleted email doesn't come down again. But if you restart your DS the deleted email comes down again.
- red marks on the upper screen when you edit a feed
- url on lower screen is on top of the keyboard image when editted.
- you can't edit to the end of very long feed URLs (again my wiki's atom URL for example)
- How about using R&L buttons to go up/down list of emails?
(hate me yet? feel free to ignore some/all of the above as I know it's a beta)
Chuck

Some suggestions for future release:
Bigger scroll bar
You must tap x and b buttons to scroll up and down. Why don't you enable it so that you can hold down x and b in order for scrolling?

It's sending and retrieving emails and RSS fine for me using my DS lite black purchased late last year and DS-Xtreme. Couple of minor bugs.
Chuck
Update
Issues:
- Loses mail/feed count on restart
- long email addresses spill over to the date field (so do long subject lines)
- Outbox count doesn't clear even after message has been sent
- Large emails give message 'Press A to download' when you press A my DS freezes and I have to reboot. Then when you view message it gives "ERROR: mail can't be displayed (RM01)"
- Download an email, delete it, select transmit, the deleted email does come down again.
- When replying default focus is the sender's email address, should really be the body of the message.
- My wiki's Atom page goes a 404 and caused the feeds count to go to -1 (seems to be the & is being dropped by the app)
- You can delete your feed accidentally by going to the settings section, pressing edit..then pressing edit again.
Suggestions
+ How about a Delete all button?
+ Store the mailbox files in a subfolder rather than root
+ How about confirmation that messages have been sent?
+ How about encrypting POP password?
+ How about an option for authenticated SMTP (so I can send emails while out and about back through my mail server)
+ Add a confirm delete box in settings
+ How about trimming an atom feed that's too big rather than just dropping it.

I'm having the same problem with my R4 & Micro SD card. I had it formatted to FAT & FAT32 but nothing happened. I'm also loosing the settings when I shutdown the DS Lite.
#120702 - writer1990 - Mon Mar 05, 2007 6:00 pm
I had that problem too on my DS lite. The fix was to patch the NDS file with the DLDI patch for my device (in my case, M3 DS simply). Then, it worked as advertised. Google "CHISM DLDI" for the patcher and patch download page.
One more note: The only way I could connect to the access point was after changing game settings to static IP.

I think SSL support was working on older versions, then something broke it. From brontoblog (0.54d):

The major issue (SSL) is still not fixed, but as the rest is quite stable I thought I'd give you something to play with. |
So it looks like it's still broken, as it's not in the recent fixed list.

The config file is autocreated when you run ndsmail, here's a copy of it: NDSMail

Also, I downloaded the example and added my own settings and then put it on the root of my card but still no cigar.

I thought Gmail was enough of an embarrisment for them for try to make a profit from hotmail still. When your charging for 100MB and a compeditor gives 1Gig away, it kinda wrecks your buisness model :p

i found a workaround to making gmail work. i dont noe if this was already mentioned (i didnt read the entire thread - 35 pages wtf?!). gmail allows you to forward all incoming mail to another email and ndsmail allows you to retrieve email from other non-ssl pop email server...get where im getting at? you make gmail forward all incoming mail to another email service that offers pop access (no ssl) and you check the latter service with ndsmail. i use lavabit and it works. now i can check for myspace/facebook comments on the go :)
EDIT - you can also use gmails rss feed (https://USERNAME:PASSWORD@gmail.google.com/gmail/feed/atom) - i personally haven't tried it. tell me how it goes :)
ps - i have a question about the feeds part of this program. i can retrieve feeds and it saves to my flash card okay. the thing is whenever i start ndsmail again, its hangs up trying to load the feeds! any solutions?
#132950 - Dood77 - Mon Jul 02, 2007 12:25 am
Yeah that would work, but some of us want SSL not just because our favorite email service requires it, but also for the reason that its secure...

Hotmail doesn't offer a POP service AFAIK. You will always have to use a Webbrowser to access Hotmail until they implement this feature (which they probably won't)

And as soon as the general public figures it out, Microsoft has every right to patch it not to work, by patching the Hotmail backend to change the protocol and then patching Outlook to work with the new protocol. It's entirely plausible that you'll end up with a PSP style cat-and-mouse game.

I don't think supporting propietary standards would make sense. Especially in this case, it would only benefit a very limited number of users, and add overhead for all users.

The only real problem with gmail is once you DO use up your 2.8GB, its a little hard to clean out as you cant search by attachment filesize :-/

Given that Gmail only allows 20MB file size for attachments, I'd ask you... Why in heck do you have 140 20MB files in your email?
Plus, theres this nifty firefox extension that might have the ability to help you out. I think its called Gspace; it lets you access your account space with an ftp-like interface.
EDIT: Oh, and as for Yahoo... I hate pages riddled with ads. Yes, I use Adblock Plus on my home computer, but I haven't the luxury everywhere else.

There's no way it could render HTML content, like DSOrganize does? So we could avoid the [unsuported content type:: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1].
Also, once i have used it and created the /INBOX file, when i re-turn on the DS, i can't connect to host (Connect(): could not resolve host name), unless i delete the /INBOX file and redownload everything.
If i redownload a attachment named "photo.jpg", it stores a copy called "photo.jpg_". Why not "_photo.jpg" or even prompting if i want to overwrite or skip it?
The /NDSmail/ folder is a nice touch indeed, please move the ndsmail.xml, inbox, outbox and feeds to it.
I can receive a *.ICO file as attachment, you think i could do so to MP3, NDS and such?
Anyways, great update, this app is everytime more usable, you are great!

Probably because HTML-only e-mail is much more likely to be spam.

Just updated to 0.60 and after 1 succesful connection to 3 mailboxes, I switched off and started again.
NDSMail hangs on loading the inbox and then I get a fatal error 'out of memory exception'.
Using an R4DS (v1.11) and the DS Browser memory cartridge ...
EDIT : when I clear the INBOX before quitting, it starts fine ...

It should work with most e-mail accounts that are bundled with Internet access subscriptions. Free web mail (Yahoo!, Hotmail, Gmail) more often uses a different protocol that is kept secret in order to ensure display of the service's advertisements.

I'm pretty sure GMail works with NDSMail if it's setup correctly.

Yahoo and Gmail are what i'm using, and it work nicely.

I thought customers had to pay extra for POP3 access on Yahoo! at one time. When was this changed?

I enabled mine yahoo account sometime ago, maybe it was free back then, and if you had it so when they started this payment police, it stays free.

gmail is working wonderfully on the new version...many thanks!...
...however, for over a year now, over all of your releases, i have never been able to get the rss reader to work. I input the sites (like digg or gonintendo) in the settings, and it will always hang when it tries to download the feeds...i don't see too many other people on here complaining about this, so I'm assuming its something i'm doing wrong...any help?
i'm using a M3 DS Simply...latest versions of everything...DS web browser slot 2 cart...

But how long will it keep working? Does anybody remember the cat-and-mouse between proprietary instant messaging networks and the developers of Trillian and libgaim (now libpurple)? How quickly are the plug-ins brought up to date? And does your ISP allow you to run a FreePOPs mail proxy or any other POP3 server on your home PC?

i don't actively use it now but when i did it was pretty solid and well designed. it's been around awhile and it still is supporting yahoo, only service i can attest to. yahoo has that new ajax beta they launched, but you can still access the normal interface. i can say that yahoo's format hasn't changed much over time, and when they had a small change it was rather quick to pick it up.. it's worth messing with to save the cash i think.
i didn't run it on a home pc - i pay $10/m for a virtual private server. i'd open a freepops up but i know how word spread on my ship (aircraft carrier) with a webproxy i told 5 friends about -- hah. and i only get 100gig/mo =)
most ISPs are only anal about port 80 though.
again, just a notable mention. i believe it's the best software out there that provides this service. i remember trying Mr Postman on my home windows PC. it has a small GUI probably more user friendly. supports fewer providers but it has the big ones. looks like it uses Java now (or did it always?)

ndsmail not working on my ds...
maybe is due to my flashcard as reported on ndsmail forum:
Quote: |
Hi,
I have a nintendo DS lite (bought one month ago, don't know the firmware version) with a ttds flash card (http://www.ndstt.com/english/index_en.htm) and a Netgear dg834g router. The network has no WEP protection.
Untill now never had problems with wi-fi homebrews (beup, bunjalloo, dsmaps and dsorganize works perfectly) but nds mail is not working. When trying to connect (it says ACQUIRINGDHCP) I get the "Could not connect to AP" error, and when I click ok I get another error when trying to initialize FAT library ("Error in folder file: no root node") for three times (same as reported here: http://www.martin-kremer.de/forum/index.php?topic=61.0).
I tought it could be a problem with writing on my flash card but never had any similar problem with other apps or games, and NDSMail is able to create a ndsmail folder with an attachment subfolder and the ndsmail.xml file with the settings I entered.
I can't manually DLDI patch the .nds file because the ttds has DLDI auto-patching and there's no DLDI device patch file for my card.
What can I do?
Thanks to anyone who can help me! |

Is it possible to get the RSS/XML/ATOM parsing library you used?

I've got access to googlemail using NDSMail_0.60 and can read messages but when making a reply I can't find a way of getting the cursor to the message text area.
Is this a universal problem or am I just not doing things right?

Solved the problem.
If there's an Address Book entry for the new message recipient the cursor moves below the Subject line into the - unlabelled - message text area of the screen.
It would be pity if Bronto has stopped further development of NDS Mail as it's nearly there.

i cannot connect to dsmail, because my WLAN is secrued with WEP and i don't want have an unsafe connection with my Internet, if I delete the WEP on the router.
What can I do that I can use the homebrew?

Disabling WEP is your only option. The security provided by WEP is fairly meagre (although it might deter people from trying to use your wireless if yours has WEP and the neighbour's has nothing). If you want you could enable MAC filtering, which, while not foolproof, is better than nothing.

Or just dont worry about it.
Just because people can use your bandwidth dosnt mean they can get to your files. Just keep a firewall, and if you got shared folders dont forget to password them.
(Unless your not paying a flat rate for your connection, or have very tight caps, of course)

What a great tool!
I've connected to my router, and connected to my Gmail account.
But then ndsmail starts downloading 370 messages! Is there any way to turn this off? I just want to send my outbox.
Thanks!
#176012 - sverx - Fri Mar 18, 2011 1:12 pm
in the configuration you should activate send/receive separation. Then it will send if your active tab is 'outbox' and receive if your active tab is 'inbox'.
