Someone has made a replacement for the Moonshell encoder that encodes at a higher quality and with smaller files. Best of all, it's a batch encoder so you can set up a list of files and it will ancode away. No more babysitting!!!
http://gbatmw.proboards44.com/index.cgi?board=mnshllgen&action=display&thread=1149097698&page=1
Edit: It seems the batch encoding isn't in this build yet, but will be added in the next one. Still, it encodes at much better quality than the original encoder.

It doesn't seem to, uh, work very well. But the files I did get it to convert are really good quality.
#85626 - Madrigal - Thu Jun 01, 2006 11:28 am
Did you read the thread? I had a lot of problems at first too. You have to grab the vfapi codec and update the Mencoder file for your processor.
After that, it works flawlessly for me. I've encoded a ton of stuff with no problems. The quality is amazing too. In comparison to the original encoder, it's like an old TV compared to an HDTV.
#85633 - mntorankusu - Thu Jun 01, 2006 11:50 am
I had it set up right at first, and I managed to convert some stuff. But it went crazy a couple times, and caused my computer to reboot once. After that though, it started working fine.

I've installed everything neccecary (Avisynth, BatchDPG + mencoder binary for AMD) but it doesn't seem to work, I choose my file, press run and it flashes up some windows, goes from 0-100% on one and creates two new files (*.avs and *_avs_vfapi.avi) but then doesn't seem to do anything, just sits there not responding.
Or does it just not have any sort of progress bar and I have to wait a while for it to complete?

I'm the author of BatchDPG, and I hereby give permission for this thread to exist, to end the argument. ;D
There seem to be a lot of people having issues with the program, which I'm unfortunately not able to reproduce. Screenshots of where it exactly gets stuck might help.
@Extreme: You just need three things; Avisynth, BatchDPG and mencoder. Bundling mencoder wouldn't be of much use since the best version to get is processor specific.

But don't almost all machines with USB ports (and thus with CF or SD writers) have at least a Pentium II/III (i686+MMX) CPU? So even though mencoder for Pentium II isn't the theoretically fastest build, wouldn't it be reasonable to bundle that and then let performance freaks sort it out?

Yes, I did some testing and the performance difference is negligable. That's why a generic (and much smaller) version of mencoder is now included in v0.4.
Installation instructions.
- Install Avisynth from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57023. Make sure to get the 2.5 version, not the 2.0.
- Install this file to any place you like: http://rapidshare.de/files/22045448/BatchDPG.exe.html / http://www.mytempdir.com/711360.
Version history:
Quote: |
BatchDPG v0.4
- Now includes generic version of mencoder.
BatchDPG v0.4 beta 2
- Batch code somewhat rewritten.
- 'nodef' error should be fixed. It was caused by sloppy coding on my part. -_-" To keep it short: the error occured when the path to BatchDPG contained any number of spaces. This wasn't the case on my setup, so I didn't notice before.
- Audio bitrate can now be as low as 96 kbps.
BatchDPG v0.4 beta 1
- Batch support, finally!
- Desperate attempt to fix issues. Probably won't work, but worth a try.
BatchDPG v0.3
- Settings are now saved.
- Should handle VFAPI better.
- Should work now on non-English Windows XP systems.
- Because of the marginal speed difference between the Medium and Low profiles, the quality of Low is now a little lower to improve speed, and equivalent to the dpgenc default.
BatchDPG v0.2
- Required codec included.
- Package now in semi-installer form.
BatchDPG v0.1
- Inititial release. |

I select avi file + sub file... push Add.. then I push Run... and wait...
((1)) it takes a seconds and it shows this window (nothing happens)... I wait for few minutes and then select the window (oh, it sees it and continues...).... waiting
((2)) Then I have this nasty window with question marks... what to select?? I select ((No)) and it starts outputting video ((4))
((5)) When it reaches 100%... ? :O wtf... nothing happens
I push "Quit" but it only shows this: ((6))

Hmm for me, it starts fine, does something (AVISynth) from 0 to 100%, fires up DGPEnc its self, enters a name... then half a second later a small both shows up that says 'nodef' which closes one second later, and I'm left with only a 0kb mpeg2 file.
Would be nice if this worked a bit better :P
EDIT:
I put a lang file in the lang folder to I wouldn't get 'nodef' anymore - the error is something about not finding an audio stream.

#85944 - mntorankusu - Sat Jun 03, 2006 11:33 am
Would it be possible to have a Mono and 64kbps selection for audio? It would be useful for saving space without losing too much quality, since I have a small CF card.
#85949 - LS5 - Sat Jun 03, 2006 1:27 pm
Excellent suggestion! Not only does 64 kbps mono sound infinitly better than 64 kbps stereo, it also speeds up the VFAPI step by a factor of 2 because less raw audio data needs to be written to disk.
BatchDPG v0.5 beta 2: http://rapidshare.de/files/22094600/BatchDPG.exe.html.

This happens if I add more than one job to the batch encode list:

Does this has something to do with the Window that opens when DPG Encoding is done (I need to close it manually)?

Hey. I just noticed that since I used BatchDPG I have four very large, annoying FFdshow icons in my system tray that will not go away. Normally there're two of them there when decoding a supported video file. I checked the taskmanager and there's no sign of BatchDPG, DPGenc, VFAPI, Mencoder, etc.

Sorry, not possible. Your best option is to turn your SRT files into SSA/ASS files with a program such as Aegisub and change font size there, since both SSA and ASS do support typesetting.

For me, they disappear by hovering over them. I usually have them turned off anyway, you can do this by going to the Tray, dialog & paths section in the FFDShow settings and unchecking Show tray icon.

If it doesn't cause any real problems, it won't stop me from using BatchDPG. However, they are increasing in number.

This is rather a clever app. Whatever setting it's using for resizing is nicer, results are good. Sound, to me, sounds a bit nicer as well...what is it you are doing differently than 'vanilla' DPGenc? It could just be that it's louder, I don't know...
Only suggestion I have is an option to force a certain aspect ratio as in the original DPGenc application. Some videos I have aren't quite right, a couple of them are encoded a the original DVD resolution rather than padded or manipulated to a true widescreen res.
*edit*
Do'h...shouldn't be playing with stuff like this after 1 AM. I wasn't even paying attention to the height adjustment...that should do nicely at making a widescreen movie look right.

Avisynth's BicubicResize is used for resizing the video, and its ResampleAudio for resampling the audio. This appears to sound better than mencoder's resampling, and as soon as I started using this method the out-of-sync issues in MoonShell disappeared too.

I've been following this app with interest.
The new 5.0 release hangs on the vfapi screen with ????
However the previous release 5.0 beta 3 worked perfectly.
Fantastic results from beta 3, the video is much "cleaner". Having the ability to set the audio to mono really give the DS arm chips some more resources to playback the video without too many glitches.
My settings
source: kids cartoon dvd 4:3 (fullscreen) 23 mins
fps 15
width 256
height 176
audio birate 80 mono
video bitrate 356 max 356
output: 60meg dpg
setup
win xp sp2
avisynth 256
Suggestions for next version
Croping command for mencoder?
"-vf crop=256:144:0:24"
This is handy for "top and tailing" video with black faux letterbox bars.
Anyhow thanks for a great app and keep up the good work.

On one hand I understand you want more control on the ouput, but on the other hand I'd like to keep this app as simple as possible and I don't really know how I would integrate this option in the program. For now, you can do this relatively easy by creating an AVS file for your video yourself, use Avisynth's Crop command, and open that file in BatchDPG. It will, ironically, create an AVS file for the existing AVS file, but it works.

Argh, it's not working. Any video file at all, even .avis that show up in Explorer's preview thing (even having deleted Windows Media, so no other video formats show up there) does the same thing: It pops up the save box, automatically enters a filename, then shows an error message:
---------------------------
VFAPI Reader Codec
---------------------------
???? F:\Movies\Anim?\Full Metal Alchemist\Full Metal Alchemist 01.avi.avs ??????.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
It creates a 172-byte .avs file and stays at the VFAPI dialog, after I close that, the main dialog doesn't respond to anything and I have to kill the process. I even tried taking an AVI that shows up in Explorer (and plays fine in everything) and copying it to F:\ccs0001.avi and it still doesn't work. The original DPG encoder doesn't work either, WTF? Every media player I have (VLC, Media Player Classic and Winamp) works fine, I tried 4 different files, and it doesn't do that nodef error thing. I use XP SP2.

Lo, i'm back on 32 bits OS (XP) and i got the same error "nodef" Oo
I don't know what to do, the first error was about a missing file: a files which end by ".avs" (it was my file name.avi.avs Oo, however my file was a wmv) then it stopped doing that and this error has been replaced by the "nodef" one.
What should i do ?
edit: from the begining i was trying to encode a .wmv video and until now i was gettin the "nodef" error. I tried with a ".avi" file and it worked.
So is it possible to add file support ? (wmv ?)
Thank in advance ++

I only managed to get that error in two different ways:
1. By not having installed Avisynth.
2. By not having registered ReadAVS.dll.
The second thing is done automatically every time BatchDPG starts, so I'm guessing your problem is the first one.

This is probably some kind of codec problem. You could try installing the latest version of Windows Media Player, which should install the necessary DirectShow codecs. Also, could you interrupt the the VFAPI step by clicking on the system tray icon and selecting Exit, open the created .avs file in any media player and tell me what error message it displays?

There is no step by step guide. It just works for me with Real Alternative installed, and there are too many factors involved to have me give you an answer to why it isn't working. Luckily, media files are not very often originally created in RMVB, so in those cases just get to the original, non-re-encoded files.

I guess the auto framerate calculation isn't perfect then. I'm mainly testing it on anime and those rarely freeze. Could you also test with Dithering=0 and GOPSkip=0 in the global.ini file? Those values are what I use.

That helps a bit but there's still some lag. Episode 1 of Card Captor Sakura freezes for about 10 seconds near the end of the intro.

I think that crop command is actually a must have. Its not hard to add such a feature. a check box and 2 text fields for width and height.
Ah... only, your doing the resize with AVI-Synth? So the crop command would just break the nicer scaling I guess.
Still, I think its very useful. For example, I convert a lot of Anime, so I crop off a small 8px border around the whole frame and scale it back up to full size. Result is subtitles you can read better :)

Yeah, I agree.
Maybe it quite hard to get it but I know you can, right?
#86681 - LS5 - Thu Jun 08, 2006 5:35 pm
Alright, I'll see if I can integrate cropping somehow, but I'm not promising anything. If I am going to do it, it's going to be Avisynth based.
In the meantime, please test v0.6 beta 1: http://rapidshare.de/files/22547896/BatchDPG.exe.html.
Changelog:
- Crash when BatchDPG is not active when starting the next file in the queue fixed.
- Attempt to fix issue where button is not automatically pressed when using 24 fps.
- Attempt to fix issue where media files located on A:, E:, I:, O: and U: partitions wouldn't work on some systems.
- Now automatically sets correct width and height on loading of media file using MediaInfo.

What files exactly does it not accept? Basically, if MediaInfo can not retrieve the aspect ratio, BatchDPG considers it not supported.
What advantage does bundling xvidcore.dll have?

seems to me that all of my avi files are encoded (is that the right word?) with xvid, either that or the codec pack i have installed use xvid to decode stuff. also what file formats does mediainfo support? maybe you can add a seperate colume in the task file noting the files rejected by mediainfo but add it to task anyways?
edit: this is weird, i used mediainfo on a rejected file, and apparently mediainfo recognize the file

I've been making all my posts about this on GBATMW, which has now gone down for the time being. I looked through this thread to see if my program was referenced, and didn't see it, so I'll link it here.
I wrote a small batch application for Windows XP that uses mediainfo to check the resolutions of all video files in a given directory. It then creates a list of the new resolutions you should use in batchdpg. Since this batch application is specific to batchdpg, and since LS5 likes it so much, I'm only listing it in this thread for the time being.. to get it, click on the this link - http://www.electronicfiles.net/files/2314/DSCoding/batchratiov1.0.rar
All you have to do is copy ratio.bat and mediainfo.exe to any folder with movie files you wish to run in batchdpg, then doubleclick ratio.bat and it will automatically create the list for you. BTW, don't close the command prompt box that comes up until you're done with it.
I hope this helps,
-Tak

I get the "nodef" error with all versions posted so far 90% of the time. I end up with a 0 KB .dpg.mp2 file. The first file that ever worked was a small AVI with XVID codec and it turned out great. Most of my files are XVID AVI files. Small WMV files have worked. But any AVI or MPG gets the "nodef" error. It doesn't get to the video conversion part so is this an audio problem? Its right before the WAVE to MP2 window pops up.
I love the quality of what I have got to work so far though!DPG files never looked or played so well before this program for me anyway.
Thank you LS5

Are you, perhaps, using VLC or MPlayer to watch your video's? If yes, you're most likely missing the correct codecs. Try installing a recent version of XviD.

When encoding a file, I get an error when VFAPI tries to open the .avs file (version 0.1 b?ta 1 & 2)
The problem is that a blank space is added before the drive letter, which causes it not to open. When i delete the blank space the file opens and the script can continue.

BatchDPG 0.5 is most stable release so far. At least it works.
I could not get 0.6b1 or 0.6b2 to work due to bugs etc.
After testing MANY encoding variables, best settings are (ZERO pauses , Excellent quality)
FPS = Auto (Don't expect more than 15fps for full screen 4:3 videos)
Profile = MED (High if you don't mind longer encoding time for little bit better quality)
Width/Height = Same as ratio of video
Audio Bitrate = 160 Stereo (Or 96k Mono is better quality but without seperation)
Normalize = Use this for louder sounds. (Will pause for around 3-5minutes during encoding at beginning)
Video Bitrate = 288 (This is the PERFECT rate for videos. Even 296 causes pauses.)
Max Video Bitrate = Always match the video bitrate = 288
I have 3 NDS Lites and have encoded a few videos all with various settings.
Then played 3 same videos with different encoding settings next to each other.
The only video bitrate which got zero stuttering/pauses was the 288kbps.
All other higher rate started to pause once in a while.
Video quality is still much better than DPGEnc. =)
Anyways. it's tough getting all the codec to work together. But worth it.
Thanks LS5 for the great program. =)

Thanks for testing everyone. I have finally been able to test BatchDPG on a computer besides my own, which makes debugging somewhat easier.
I hope v0.6 beta 3 fixes issues people were having: http://rapidshare.de/files/22690650/BatchDPG.exe.html / http://www.mytempdir.com/729078.
Changelog:
- Now only displays a warning when aspect ratio information could not be retrieved.
- Should fix space after quotation mark issue.
- About window updated. ;)
Also, if you still recieve the nodef error, I'm pretty sure it's a codec issue. I highly recommend uninstalling the codecs you currently have installed, and installing the CCCP: http://www.cccp-project.net/.

excellent, now it works without a hitch, thanks LS5 =D
just curious, a nodef error shouldnt occur if the video can in fact play properly in a player right?
also, i think people should stop refer it as a nodef error, just put a language file in the dpglan folder or somethign similar and see what it says
edit: why would a .rm video that can be converted in the official DPGtools not able to convert in batchdpg..."playtime cannot be detected"
edit 2: i tried using dpgenc alone, and it converts it. seems like there's some kind of "translating" error by using VFPAIConvEn, whats VFAPI for anyways? subtitle support? if so, can there be an option where we can simply bypass it and let dpgenc handle the original file?

Yeah, I probably should include the English language file; the reason I didn't include it initially was because silly me wasn't expecting any dpgenc errors in the first place.
adrian783 wrote: |
edit: why would a .rm video that can be converted in the official DPGtools not able to convert in batchdpg..."playtime cannot be detected" |
Does dpgenc accept RM(VB) files? Anyway, RMVB files work on my system, so I expect RM would too.

Nope, the VFAPI step can not be bypassed. What VFAPI does is turn the AVS file into a 'fake' AVI file which does include audio, but still depends on the AVS file for the video. This is done because dpgenc doesn't accept normal AVS files.

AviSynth + VFAPIConv seems like an unnecessary step, from my understanding, AviSynth is used to serve each frame at the specified settings in the avs scripting file. however most of these functions is already present in DPGenc except normalizing the sound, but that can be done with mencoder anyways right? wouldnt it be easier to just use dpgenc with the original video file instead of passing frames to it? (well, to be honest i say that because i seem to have problem with my video files going through AviSynth and VFAPIConv)

AVIs encoded with Huffyuv in YUV mode produce only a black screen. (RGB mode works.)
I can't see any way to clip out letterboxing without making a VirtualDub pass.

Hi LS5,
Can you add the fuction that we can select ouput folder. There are only 2 selections; by default output files will be same folder as input files; and the other option is that we can choose a folder for some output files.
For example:
I have 1.avi, 2.avi, 3.avi, 4.avi. When convert, I can choose output for 1.dpg, 4.dpg at a folder that we can set; output for 2.dpg, 3.dpg by default will be at same folder of 2.avi, 3.avi.

For example, if I have AVI files on a read-only medium such as a CD or DVD, I want to write the temporary files and .dpg file to the C: drive.

I've been waiting for something like this for a long time now but I'm having a strange problem. Everything works fine up to the point when it combines the audio and video. I get the seperate audio and video files but not the one .dpg one. I also get this error in the encoder log. The file is a AVI of purepwnage episode 2:
success: format: 0 data: 0x0 - 0x0
rawvideo: img size not specified and unknown format!

I use the Cole2k Advanced codec pack and all works fine. =)
Just don't use either PowerDVD or Intervideo DVD/DVB filters.
(Select don't use, then select on AC3filter ONLY)
Also, uncheck all the vvid and divx from the ffdshow setup page.
Leave everything else default. Install and enjoy! =)
(This worked on multiple PCs so far for ALL the videos I have with various encodings)

By looking at the mencoder log, it seems dpgenc converts the video to BGR24 anyway, so if it's just dpgenc not being able to handle YUV video properly, I guess adding a ConvertToRGB24() command to the Avisynth script would fix this problem.

You can create an Avisynth script and include the Crop command: http://www.avisynth.org/Crop.

Hi LS5,
Can you add the fuction that we can select ouput folder.

That's the error that comes up when using the mencoder version from the DPG tools package. It's not that hard to add support for it though, so expect it working in the next version.

Is there a graphical editor for Avisynth scripts? VirtualDub lets me drag the borders of the cropping frame on a sample frame of the video.

There's not really a graphical interface for Avisynth, but you can use the crop values you find in VirtualDub for Avisynth's Crop command.

First of great program.
En als Belg supporter ik ook voor Holland :-) en Itali?.
Was wondering if it's possible to add possibilty to use an extern wav-file as sound (just like the Moonshelldecoder) . Because I demux an DVD to one large M2V and an AC3 or WAV. Would like to convert these directly to DPG without first decoding to Divx or Xvid. If I can use an other method please more info, I'm a pretty noob in videoconverting.
#87521 - wonghj - Wed Jun 14, 2006 8:28 am
must we use the fvapi encoder? Cos moonshell encoder doesnt use it at all.. Hmm.. Cos I'm always having problems with my fvapi codec error thing..

I have reinstall avisynth2.56 and the previous prob is somehow solved.. But no conversion is done inside the vfapi thing.. I wonder if it's always like this?
But now comes another error.. Looks lk the nodef error which pple have been talking about.. Care to help me find out what's the problem? I have download the BatchDPG v4.0 and it works out fine..
Anyway.. Anyone willing to share what are the framerates and stuff to provide a better quality video?

To give you an update on what I'm currently working on;
The reason I used VFAPI and dpgenc in the first place was because I didn't know how to write the DPG header. I knew about this (http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=7897) topic with very valuable information, but I didn't have enough coding experience to actually be able to write something that creates the header. The thing is, I still don't. The good news, though, is that I pasted the code of the program in that topic named headermaker into Microsoft Visual C++ Express Edition, and to my surprise, I actually got it to compile correctly. However, when joining the header with the audio file and the video file, MoonShell would reject the file. After comparing the header created by dpgenc with the one from headermaker, I found that the error came from one subtle difference. headermaker writes the number of channels, while dpgenc doesn't. Apparently, if it is a null byte, it tells MoonShell that the file contains MP2 audio, instead of GSM. After slightly editing the headermaker code, I got it to work correctly. I've rewritten a large part of BatchDPG so it now doesn't need VFAPI and dpgenc anymore. This allows for a lot of new possibilities, such as using other encoders, framerates up to 60 fps (60 fps is, ofcourse, not really useful, but 25 fps might be), samplerates up to 48000, audio bitrates higher than 160 kbps, etc. I've gotten it to work correctly for the most part, but there are still some things that need to be worked out. I'm not ignoring your bug reports and feature requests, but I want to get this completely working first. ;)

That's great new LS5, keep up the good work.
Would the new version enable multiple pass/VBR video encoding using CCE?
That would rock as think vbr would help full screen video conversions which eat up bitrate.

Too much has changed, so no changelog, just a list of notes:
- Progress bar (currently) only works for video.
- TwoLAME is used as the MP2 encoder, which should provide a little bit better quality.
- I've been testing a lot of MPEG-1 encoders, but I havn't found one yet that provides better output and is easier to use than mencoder.
- Only use mono for 44,1 kHz and 48 kHz. You've been warned.
- Only use up to 192 kbps for mono.
- A lot of files in the older versions of BatchDPG are not used anymore, so if you're overwriting your older installation, you might want to delete the older directory first.
- Avisynth is still a requirement.
- The created DPG files are not exactly compliant. You won't notice it during playback, but dpgdec will give an error when trying to demux the DPG file. Still trying to find a solution.
- Probably some more I forgot.
- Enjoy!

My complete lack of knowledge in compiling anything is what's blocking the use of a non-.NET language. It's just the program posted here (http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?p=64827#64827) with some slight modifications, and the compiling process just happened to work in Microsoft Visual C++ Express Edition.
#88135 - Durandle - Sat Jun 17, 2006 7:21 pm
Installed the framework, same error, grrr....
#88142 - tepples - Sat Jun 17, 2006 7:56 pm
Compiling a program using MinGW is easy:
Code: |
gcc -Wall -O foo.c bar.c baz.c -o foo.exe
or
g++ -Wall -O foo.cpp bar.cpp baz.cpp -o foo.exe |
-Wall means all warnings; -O means perform basic optimizations (otherwise -Wall may miss some warnings about use or nonuse of variables), -o means that the following word is the name of the executable.
It appears you don't need the framework; you just have to have another program compiled with a recent Visual C++ installed, or you need to use Google to get MSVCP70.dll.

Hmm.. As compared to the Moonshell's encoder they have.. The file they output are smaller in filesize (Max Settings) and slightly better in quality..
I compare the quality via the clarity of the lyrics that my mtv video played.. The words that moonshell encoder produced are alot clearer than that of the BatchDPG..
However everyone kept saying that this program is indeed better.. So maybe I've got my settings wrong.. So I am wondering if anyone can provide me with the best settings that can outshine the Moonshell's encoder totally?
Ha.. I'm using the newest BatchDPG v1.0b2 btw.. Yup.

Well, don't expect anything amazing. In my opinion, with the recent release of the PSP MOD AVC homebrew, the PSP is still light-years ahead of the DS in terms of video playback. However, from my own experience, the results of my BatchDPG are at the very least slightly better than those of 'just' dpgenc. You might disagree though. As for the best settings, the program's defaults are actually what i use myself.

Could you try the v1.0 beta 2 alternative build from the previous page, and try playing the created AVS file in a media player? If the process is that short, it's probably a codec problem.

Great program! Multifile support is just great.
Im currently using 1 beta 1 and it works flawlessly over here.
Just as some has mentioned earlier.. im not overwhelmed by it's quality.. I did create one with the same settings (almost, fps untouched) in dpgenc and batchdpg. Basically the one created in batchdpg went smoother.. but it also generated a bigger file size.
60mb = for the one created in batchdpg and
45mb = for the one made in moonshells tool dpgenc
other than that, they pretty much were identical imo.

Could it be possible to add priority support for encoding in the following release (handy when runnning a big batch)
for mencoder the parameter to add is "-priority option" (option can be " belownormal, idle, normal, realtime, ...)
for the audio tools I don't know
a generic low priority start can be accomplished with
START /LOW program

It seems to be working now, thankyou very much.
would it possible in a future version to open a bunch of videos at the same time and use the same settings on all of them? I have loads of cartoons i want to convert, but its a bit of a pain adding them to the list one at a time.

Is either the audio or video conversion finishing absurdly fast?
#88422 - Nuja - Mon Jun 19, 2006 12:22 pm
When u say finishing u mean during the process, or from the begining to end ?
#88423 - LS5 - Mon Jun 19, 2006 12:46 pm
I'm not sure what you mean. The BatchDPG process has three steps; transcoding audio, transcoding video, and multiplexing. Do one of the first two steps take a very short time, like less than 5 seconds?

the only thing which seems to be normal is the video transcoding, audio transcoding never happend and the multiplexing is too fast (1 sec Oo).
And when i click run the program tells me that a dll is missing. i downloaded the dll and placed it into batchdpg folder and in system32 but nothing change it asks me the dll.

Thank you for this program!
i have a video that couldn't encode correctly with dpgenc (all colors are blue, skin are blue... very strange)
and batchdpg works fine
BUT!
;)
how can i keep my aspect ratio?
if the video is 16/9 or 4/3, the render is not the same,
on dpgenc the a/r is auto, can you add this one please? thx

But i'll be using this one for it's golden feature, multifile support.

I like the multifile support too.. But hmm.. I don't know why but the clip i converted kindof freezed after playing about 1min.. The moonshell encoder made the file ran smoothly..
I didnt know why cos I used the default settings provided and that was what LS5 used? Hmm.. If all the files froze just like the one I made before.. The multifile support won't be of much use? Yup..

BatchDPG is supposed to select the correct aspect ratio automatically. If it doesn't, you have no choice but to select the correct aspect ratio manually.
As for the people with MSVCR70.DLL problems, the culprit is avs2wav. However, I don't know how it is compiled exactly. My current advice would be to try installing the .NET Framework 1.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3), but I can't give you any promises.

At last, version 1.0 Beta 4 is the first working version for me. My thoughts about the results with default settings:
+ Nice audio quality, cleaner and sharper than moonshell's.
+ Jumping to various points of the video causes no desync at all, unlike moonshell's dpgenc.
+ Multifile support.
- Video quality isn't at all better (at least with default settings).
- Bigger filesize (eg 7,75 MB dpgenc, 11 MB BatchDPG)

when encoding bigger file, the difference is the same, so it's not annoying

My system have .net framework 2.0, the MSVCR70.DLL file in the system directory ,avisynth 2.5 and batchdpg 1.0 u2 or u4 and it work within problems. But it's with codecs the problem.
Before many install and desinstall of codec (i use satsuki decoder pack), now it recognize this with magic way (the ffdshow), but i don't know why in fact ... i think the better problem is the recognition of codec by batchdpg or avisynth, or something else in this directory ...

Ah, yes, I have just been able to reproduce the error. Let me guess, you had the BatchDPG installation folder open too? If multiple windows named BatchDPG are open, BatchDPG gets kind of confused where to get the ListView (the queue) information from. Will be fixed in the next version.

Well it's working for me, no freezing here. Do you have Dithering=0 and GOPSkip=0 set in global.ini? If not, please try those settings, since those work for me. If that doesn't work, I can only conclude that the problem is somehow on your side, as I havn't had any reports like these before. :/

I think it's important to note that some media cards aren't read as fast as others. I'm not sure about other flashcarts, but there's some pretty extensive studies done on SD, Mini-SD and CF Media with the corresponding M3 units, and Media Cards that perform poorly on certain tests ([/yarr] video comes to mind) won't be able to play the higher quality videos without freezes. I have one SD card that can play 256x192 res video at 24fps without slowdowns, but the same video on other SD cards tends to freeze for about 45 seconds after the first ten seconds.
Essentially, it all depends upon how fast your Flashcart (M3, Supercard, EZ4, and whatever else) can read/write from/to the SD or CF card. 1.1MBps is required for a perfect 5 on the video test (no slowdowns, no frameskips, etc.). The one that plays the best can transfer around 1.5 MBps. We need a DS app to test performance of media cards - something I'm looking into making, but I've got a LOT to learn about coding for the DS before THAT happens.

I made a GBA-mode speed tester for CF cards in a GBAMP v2 if it helps. It could probably be easily recompiled for other adapters that newer versions of Chishm's FAT driver support.

I have three slight problems with default configuration of v1.0b4 + update. Once transcoding audio is finished, the transcoder crashes, but I click okay on the windows memory error popup and then in goes on to do the same thing at the end of the video transcoding. The resulting DPG is works almost perfectly.
- Loading a video file gives an error regarding aspect ratio and asks me to enter width and height manually. Enter this where?
- The transcoders crashing interrupts streamlined batch processing. (Prompting for clicks at errors). I suppose keytext could solve this. ;)
- The resulting DPG has problems with aspect ratio (no kidding). It seems to be stretched only horizontally on the DS.
The original file was encoded with XVID (29fps, 153kbps, 24 bit sample size), MPEG 3 (128kbps), 512*384 pixel. So I'm guessing the problems have to do with the codec as XVID can't really be trusted.
In any case, with perseverance, works like a charm. It's basically a windows equivalent to forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=7897, which I respect. Every platform needs an equivant!

You don't need the update too. The update is only useful if you already have a previous version installed and don't want to install the entire package again.
velusip wrote: |

Ah, another person who has the problem of the aspect ratio not being retrieved correctly. In any case, you can set the width and height manually in the video 'group'. A width of 256 and height of 144 is the 'perfect' value for widescreen content, and a width of 256 and height of 192 the correct one for fullscreen content.
velusip wrote: |

Well, yeah, simulating keypresses could ofcourse solve this, but if they crash there's something more serious going on. Do the error messages say something informative?
velusip wrote: |

That can be solved by setting the width and height correctly. But like I said before, this should be done automatically, and if it doesn't, I'm going to have to take another good look at the code.
In other news, I've released BatchDPG v1.0 beta 5, which includes the array variable bugfix and the 'do after encoding' and process priority feature requests. Only mencoder is currently affected though.

Where did you get msvcr70.dll from? The one in my system32 dir isn't regsvr32 registrable. I guess bundling it with BatchDPG anyway seems like a good idea.

It's that good ol' memory error:

The instruction at "0x01ae8bfc" referenced memory at "0x00c23830". The momory could not be "read".
OK terminates.

The message pops up at the end of transcoding audio and video.
Also, may I recommend that many files may be loaded at once rather than one at a time? The options may be set later to all files loaded rather than one at a time.

For some reason since I updated (I don't know the version number of the last version I used, but it had the old gui and you could see it typing text into dialogs and running dpgenc) every video I convert with batchdpg locks up my DS as soon as I try to play it in moonshell. I'm using the default settings with the low and medium profiles. I've tried several different videos in different formats and all lock up. I tried turning off the dithering and the GOP in moonshell, but it didn't help. I'm using a Supercard CF with a really cheap ($20 for 1GB) CF card, so it could be a speed issue, but videos I converted with the old version of batchdpg and dpgenc work fine.
Any ideas on what the problem might be?
#89146 - velusip - Fri Jun 23, 2006 9:28 am
There really needs to be a way to prepare a mass number of files with the same settings at once. As it is now I had to load hundreds of files one by one (I made a fancy keytext script to do it, but even still it took a while since there is a delay at every step).
Perhaps a small and simple drag and drop interface that allows you to predefine the arguments you want passed at each step. Then just drop all your files at once and the program spits out a .bat file with all the commands to do the processing. That's really all that is needed.

BatchDPG v1.0 beta 6 released. All columns in the queue except for the Media one are hidden, because there was way too much information. Also, multiple files can now be added in one click. I don't really like the implentation, but it's the best I could think of. The added files can not be edited later on, so be sure that all of them have the same aspect ratio, and note that you shouldn't be using this if you plan to add subtitles.

Both version 6 and version 5.
I have not attempted earlier versions yet.
Error is:

This happens immediately upon starting the conversion. (Not even any temp files left over).
Could the problem have something to do with Avisynth?

Changelog:
- Dropped avs2wav and replaced it by BePipe. Hopefully, this works for the people who were having issues with avs2wav.
- Progress bar now also displays progress for the audio conversion.
As you can see, there should be no more avs2wav errors. For BePipe, Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 must be installed.

I get the same problem as Vasco with 2 different computers and very different video files.
All the dpgs are created, but they only take up 32 bytes each.
Upon adding the videos to convert to the list at the bottom and pressing Run, the list items are very quickly removed, one by one, presumably as a result of being very quickly encoded. (Creating the very small dpg files).
Both computers have .Net 2.0 installed.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I get the same problem as Vasco with 2 different computers and very different video files.
All the dpgs are created, but they only take up 32 bytes each.
Upon adding the videos to convert to the list at the bottom and pressing Run, the list items are very quickly removed, one by one, presumably as a result of being very quickly encoded. (Creating the very small dpg files).
Both computers have .Net 2.0 installed. |
Like Snowy? said, .NET v2.0 is irrelevant, you should have v1.1 installed. I find it odd that neither the audio nor the video encoding finishes succesfully though, so I'm afraid there's still a lot of work for me to do. I've tested BatchDPG v1.0 beta 7 on 3 different computers, and it works flawless on all of them.

Use a fast SD card
Turn off the video skip and sinc options in moonshell
Code: |
[DPGPlugin]
Dithering=0
GOPSkip=0
AdaptiveDelayControl=0
BlockGSMAudio=1
|
Also if your using an M3 SD I know from personal experience it run faster if you format your SD card Fat32 (cluster size dependend on card size)

Shouldn't .net 2 be backwards compatible?
It is a version number, after all, and Microsoft has only recently given up on backwards compatibility. (And it still does exist, for the most part).
Edit:
There...
See chart in the middle; Microsoft appears to be saying that it's backwards compatible. A web search seems to give mixed opinions.
Wouldn't it be crashing with a big and loud error box, though?
Of course, I do believe you; I'll install 1.1 and see what happens :)
Edit2:
Installing .Net Framework 1.1 did not help :(

Great converter, much better quality and a lot faster to convert.
One problem si the audio in the right speaker is allways choppy. Contains like a constant click. I have tried mono and different bit rates but nothing seems to work. Any ideas? Thanks

i also had choppy sound - if you use Moonshell 1.31 final - try 1.31 beta3, it's working fine for me.

I'm using verison beta 7, and it creates a tray icon, then uses 100% CPU usage, and does nothing. It never shows any GUI at all! Any ideas?

Yes, MoonShell 1.31 beta 3 doesn't have that problem. Strange bug in MoonShell, nothing I can do about it.

Execuse me while I go outside and beat myself over the head with a phone pole.
As you may have guessed, it works now :P
(I guess I inadvertantly uninstalled AviSynth previously).
Very nice!!
Okay, two suggestions:
Firstly: Is it possible to auto-detect if AviSynth is installed?
And: Any chance of a Cancel button? I found a big problem with Moonlight's movie encoder was the inability to cancel an encoding operation without going into the task manager, which was a a pain.
Thanks for making this... and for putting up with my inability to read instructions :)
Edit:
Seems to create much smaller DPGs, too!
What took up 52 MB with the old DPG encoder only consumes around 32 here.
Is that a known feature, or something that I've done wrong?

You mean using the same bitrate settings? As for your first suggestion; that's very easy to do, so I added that to the code. Will be present in the next version. Your second suggestion is on my to-do list.

I did that, but it didn?t do any difference...mainly because the videos never get to start...they go black screene and then i can?t go back or anything...i did all the things you said.. but the batchdpg gives me an error when starting to convert so maybe it?s that the problem...

That would do it.. It's giving you an error during the audio transcoding process. Don't fully know why, but try the previous beta. It uses a different audio transcoding method.
#90156 - Mr. Picklesworth - Wed Jun 28, 2006 6:10 pm
Looks like that explains why my files are so small; I get the black screens, too :(
Either audio or video was not added to the DPG... I'm guessing audio that's missing, since video would probably take up more space. Both seemed to have been converted, but perhaps not both added to the final dpg file.
(No error message when encoding, though)

Hi everyone, it's been a while.
BatchDPG v1.0 beta 8 was just released. No major changelog:
- Check to see if AviSynth is installed.
- 44100 samplerate removed because it introduced artifacts in the video, the 384 and 320 audio bitrates removed because they caused the video to freeze when seeking.
Lots of betas, I know, but I want the v1.0 final to be atleast somewhat stable. ;P I also wanted to include some kind of abort function, but my implentation didn't work as I wanted it to, so I left it out for now. Also, with the release of the v1.0 final, I plan to release the source publicly so anyone can add the features they want, or maybe even make their own program.

Yes, most likely a codec problem. Do the file that don't work have anything in common?

Can you add support for lower resolutions? I like to encode videos that need a high frame rate at 128x96 resolution, because I can't stand the way other resolutions scale.
#91178 - velusip - Wed Jul 05, 2006 1:49 am
Version 1.0b4
Old codecs completely stripped and then installed divx official, Xvid 1.0.3, ffdshow, VFAPI 1.05; Now all bugs and blips are gone. Works great.
So it was just a bad combination of installed codecs where a bad one was being used over another. Has nothing to do with your use of other tools.

Excellent app! YAY! for MKV support :)
I just encoded something at max res, auto fps @ 300 bitrate and its playing fine, subs perfectly readable too. This is the first "proper" video I've tried encoding and watching on a DS, one thing I did notice however was severe colour banding when watching it back on the DS...
The thing I was watching was pretty dark, and it seemed really bad in the darkest scenes. Is this normal? Im re-encoding now at 384 bitrate to see if that makes any diff.
Out of interest, what settings do you lot use? Anyone ever tried higher than 384?

Nintendo DS has a 15-bit screen. If you set your PC display to 15- or 16-bit, do you notice the same problem?

If it's a bit too dark, just bump up your brightness settings in your codec's control panel. That way it will encode brighter.

Not much progress has happened because a lack of time, but I'll try to make a worthy v1.0 final release really soon.
adrian783 wrote: |

Nope. You could load one of the files first without adding it to have it calculate the aspect ratio, and then use the multiple file thingy.
adrian783 wrote: |

Actually, they're not really gone, they're just hidden. You could make them appear again by playing around with the columns, but it won't remember the positions, which is obviously what you want. I have to dissapoint you though, it seems like too much trouble for me to make the on/off setting a built-in option. However, since I'll release the source soon, I'll provide you the instructions on how to modify the correct part of the source and compile it yourself.
mntorankusu wrote: |

Sure, done. MoonShell's scaling technique is indeed terrible. Some way to have the videos played in the original resolution in MoonShell would be great.

Unlike dpgenc, BatchDPG doesn't alter the brightness. I like to keep the video in its original state as much as possible, which is why I didn't include a brightness option. If you really want to change the brightness, you could do what Madrigal suggested, or create an Avisynth file and use its Tweak function.

#92930 - The 9th Sage - Sat Jul 15, 2006 6:27 pm
Aha...thanks to this newer version that tells you when something goes wrong I fixed my problem. Awhile back, I re-installed some updates for Nero and apparently Nero's AC3 decoding filter 'took over', and my computer began using that one instead of AC3filter which is what I had been using. Since the actual files I was trying to convert appeared to play fine (albeit kinda quietly) hadn't noticed this had happened.
It would seem that either batchDPG or AVIsynth has some weird issue with Nero's AC3 decorder. I reinstalled AC3filter, checked to ensure it was being used to decode AC3 Dolby Digital stuff in my video files, and the resulting DPG worked fine so that must have been the issue for me.

Ok, I haven't tested betas as I've been so busy with my other projects. Now version 1.0 final is out. I tested it out and there seems to be "Process priority" setting. It could be very usefull, but it's only a setting that does nothing. mencoder.exe always takes 80-90% of my CPU power.. so I can't practically do anything else while BatchGPG is running (or I can manually force Windows to set it's priority to minimal, but it's not flexible enough when there is many encoding projects in queue).
Are you able to make BatchDPG to make mencoder.exe to use less CPU power?

I think ppl should remove all the existing codecs and install only the ones that are proven to work. I have the latest DivX codec + the latest AviSynth beta and it it's a working combination. I also have latest XviD and other codecs and I have never had any problems with DPG encoder -interface or your program interface. It's for sure that movie clips that doesn't work with windows media player, doesn't work with BatchDPG. I think not all ppl sees it.

I've looked into multipass encoding, but it seems like mencoder doesn't support multipass MPEG-1.

Changing the priority like in Windows Task Manager is exactly what the process priority option in BatchDPG does. The idea of a low priority isn't to make it use fewer CPU cycles by default, it's to only lower the CPU usage as soon as there's another process that needs the CPU cycles more than mencoder does. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The thing is, his problem was not codec related. If it was indeed a codec problem, the video couldn't possibly have been converted either.

Does any1 use subtitles?
I have 23.976fps movie with subtitles.
It plays great with wimp and the subtitles are in sync.
After converting and testing with DS the dpg subtitles came in wrong timing.. from the beginning.
Should I fix the subtitles (fps) timing before I add it to queue or what? Should it work out of the box already?

For me, every subtitle I've tried has worked perfectly timing-wise. Does this happen with all of your subtitles? Does the subtitle desynchronisation get worse as the movie progresses?

I just figured out that after I convert fps with "SubtitleEditor" from 23.976 to 18 fps and manually set 18fps in BatchDPG it works great (no desynch).
If I make a clip of the video with VirtualDub using "Direct stream copy" setting for video+audio. The Clip + subtitle aren't in synch.. I'm not sure why VirtualDub doesn't manage to make Direct stream copy correctly.

That rules out the possibility of a bad compile. It's either a bug in mencoder or the mpg2splt.dll file it's refering to. Does it only happen with this particular MPEG file? You could also try if using a different MPEG splitter fixes the problem, such as this one.

I'm not quite sure what you tried to do with VirtualDub there... In any case, could it be possible that your subtitle file's timing is based on frames rather than time? The AVS file created by BatchDPG changes the framerate before adding the subtitles, so that would explain the desynchronisation.

Sorry, typo here... I was trying to make an example for you to see that error. I forgot to mention.
Subtitle based on time/fps, what's the difference.. does your script only support time based subtitles? And is the specific type of the subtitle that is supported (MicroDVD, Subrip, etc)?

The difference between a time-based and a frame-based timing is the way they indicate when a subtitle needs to be displayed. For example, let's assume a subtitle needs to be shown 30 seconds into the movie. In a time-based system, you could indicate this as [00:00:30.000]. In a frame-based system, you would have to know the framerate. Let's assume the framerate is 25. This would give you the frame number 25*30=[750].
It usually doesn't matter for the end user in what system the timing is done, but only the time-based system works properly using BatchDPG. BatchDPG changes the framerate (let's assume 15fps) before adding the subtitles, so when the subtitle file indicates the subtitle should be shown at the 750st frame, it actually displays it after 750/15=50 seconds instead of 750/25=30 seconds! This is just my speculation though, I don't know if your subtitle file is frame-based. What type of file is it exactly?
As for the supported subtitle types, anything that VSFilter can handle is supported. SRT (SubRip), SSA and ASS are definitely supported, and are time-based. MicroDVD is frame-based and would probably have desynchronisation issues.

That rules out the possibility of a bad compile. It's either a bug in mencoder or the mpg2splt.dll file it's refering to. Does it only happen with this particular MPEG file? You could also try if using a different MPEG splitter fixes the problem, such as this one. |
Regular (vcd) mpeg displayed no error message and worked fine. As for the download, I downloaded that and got an .ax file. Didn't know what to do with it so I put it in my system folder and in the batchdpg folder (prob wrong). Displayed the same error. I uploaded a small mpg file of the format svcd so you could test if you like to.

Converts flawlessly here. You have to register the AX file first. After you put it in your system32 folder, go to Start -> Run and enter 'regsvr32 MpegSplitter.ax', without the quotation marks.

That fixed it thanks ;)
Even though I know it's the "final" ver, I was wondering if some kind of 'cancel' / 'cancel all' option would be possible to include?
As you know, when for example an avi is at example 92 height, it changes it automatically in the settings when added. Sometimes I forget to set that to max as I use and start encoding. Just to realize im using the wrong setting, so I have to 'force close' the program and go to the temp dir and remove the working files manually.
So a 'cancel and cancel all' option would be a neat feature, so it would stop the current (/all files in que) file it's converting and automatically delete the temp files used when doing so.

The 'final' suffix wasn't meant as a 'there will be no more releases' message, it was just to clearly differentiate it from the previous beta releases. ;)
The abort function is on the to-do list on my site. The problem is, using AutoIt (the programming language I'm using) it's not very easy to do something like that. I didn't like how my previous attempt turned out, but I'll have another go at it soon. I just want it to be at least somewhat efficient.

Final is not a good word to people who doesn't speak good english as it sounds to them like a last version.
Abort function...
When you push abort, you want to kill the process, right?
Why don't you kill all the mencoder.exe, etc needed processes? I personally use kill.exe (Microsoft Process Kill Utility) in my scripts to kill the needed processes.

I'm new to BatchDPG. Converted my first video and played it using Moonshell on a m3 mini sd adapter.
Anyhow, my question is, are there any setting tweeks I should be aware of that will improve the video quality while using this converter? I converted an episode of Lost and noticed the framerate skip at different parts of the episode. Is this just normal or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your help, and thanks for this great program.

Ok, this program is really cool and I've already converted a few files with it, but some of my files come up with this error:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e325/user6336/dpg1.jpg
EDIT: I opened the wrong file in WMP... here's the error I get in WMP:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e325/user6336/dpg2.jpg
Could someone please tell me what the problem could be? It converts OK using the default DPG encoder, but not Batch DPG. :(
EDIT2: Ok, I found this after finding your web address: 'You're using an old version of AviSynth. You need atleast v2.56. Please try again using the latest version.' So I guess I'll just try DL'ing that, and if it doesn't work, I'll update this post again! :)

Oops, missed this post. Well, the only 'tweak' I really recommend is setting the profile to 'High', since it doesn't have any negative side-effects aside from a slower conversion speed. You can experiment with raising the bitrate values, but do note that higer values will result in larger files and can cause some skipping.
As for your skipping problem, you might want to try to lower the video bitrate (especially the max video bitrate value), and check if the problem persists. If it does, you should probably manually adjust the framerate (FPS). Widescreen videos (such as Lost) are encoded at a framerate of 20fps with the 'auto' option, so experiment with values like 18.

wow...I just converted an episode of School Rumble with this..and..it looked a lot better than when I did it with the conversion tool that came with moonshell (and the file as only 10mb bigger than the one I orginally had ^^). However...is it posible to show the subtitles that are embedded in the mkv files? I converted one episode, but the subtitltes wern't included :(
EDIT: I found a handy little tool to extract the subtitles from the mkv file...i'm tryign that out right now and will see if it works. If anyone is interested in the tool, it's called mkvextractgui. ;-)

If you use ffdshow and it's your default decoder for whatever type of audio it is, you should be able to use ffdshow's Delay setting.
#98250 - Firon - Mon Aug 14, 2006 10:18 am
Would allowing VBR for the audio be possible even if only for mono? (TwoLame supports encoding in VBR, but I'm not sure if Moonshell's decoder supports it, 'cause VBR support isn't required for decoders).
The mono bitrate range at 48KHz is 56-192 in VBR mode, so you wouldn't have to worry about it going too high. Stereo has a larger range (192-384kbps) so it may not be a good idea there.
Also, would multiple passes for the video encoding help at all, quality-wise? If so, would it be possible to implement support that?
Is there any way to get the embedded subs encoded into the video -without- having to extract them and specify them manually in BatchDPG?
Is there any tool/way to simply mux the video and audio elementary streams into a DPG file? Edit: nevermind, found your DPGMux tool.

Interesting idea indeed, but from my testing TwoLAME's VBR encoded files do not work in MoonShell. MoonShell would open the DPG file, but close it immediately.

Yes, you could quite easily replace BePipe with avs2wav by making a very small number of modifications to the source. There's a good reason I chose to use BePipe instead of avs2wav, though. First of all, avs2wav was giving a lot of people problems. Second, BePipe outputs a percentage of completion which avs2wav doesn't, so BePipe allows me to have a progress bar. May I ask why you don't want to install the .NET framework?

If you must know I just plain don't like the idea. Just seems like more bloat that'll take up more disk space and slow things down even more. I already have all manner of different runtimes for things installed and I'd really like to avoid throwing another in just for one program.

Although I do see your point, you must understand that I will not switch programs just because one person might find a certain runtime bloat. The installation of the .NET framework should have no impact on the performance on your system, and more programs are going to be using it in the future. I'm afraid it's either install the framework, or not use BatchDPG at all.

Does that noise come from the right speaker/earbud? If so, it's due to a bug in MoonShell. MoonShell v1.31 beta 3 is known to certainly be working correctly, although the v1.4 betas have been working fine for me too.

I don't expect you to. I just wanted to know if I could replace that one program requiring it. I'll see if I can get avs2wav working.
BTW, I don't plan on using Windows much longer (at least primarily), so it's not going to matter much to me if more programs start using .Net.
For that matter if there are any other DPG encoders, I'd be interested in trying them. I'd use dpgenc except there doesn't seem to be any way to enable subtitles.

Well for those who are inclined towards the penguin there is a ruby frontend thing and the original bash/ruby scripts over here.
There is no true dpgencoder as it's just a container for an MPEG1 video stream and a GSM WAV or MPEG2 audio stream.
Mencoder (or FFMPEG) and Sox is all you need.
And that little header maker program.

A funny little bug. A file containing the character ^ (exponent, or hat... I'm not sure what it's actually called) will not work. I'm sure other characters will do the same thing. So if your video conversion isn't working it could be as simple as that.

My apologies for the thread necromancy but have the authors considered use of the new Soundout plugin for avisynth in place of bepipe or avs2wav?: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120025
It supports MP2 output and I have played around with it for a little while now and find it quite stable (certainly more so than bepipe or avs2wav and it dodges the .net issues which is in my opinion the single biggest detractor from BatchDPG).
I am not sure about the license but seen as one of the AVIsynth authors is responsible for it and is considering integrating with V 2.6 I am sure it will be compatible.

Is there any way I can convert .vobs to .dpg? Thanks

I encode a lot of video and DPGs I normally make by hand so this post will likely reflect that.
Vob files are the container used on DVDs so you should only have to find a splitter/demuxer and use that.
DVD conversion is often a fairly complex process so I would suggest visiting somewhere like http://www.doom9.org/ , http://www.videohelp.com/ or http://www.digital-digest.com/ and the forums these sites at some point. None the less it is quite possible.
Chances are you will first need to decrypt the video (smaller studios and some of the more sensible ones do not encrypt), ripit4me http://www.ripit4me.org/ is able to deal with structure protection fairly well (it acts as a frontend to the legendary DVD Decrypter and includes several other great little tools you can use to treat corrupt DVDs that some companies put out these days).
Chances are AVISynth will probably be a tool in your arsenal so DGMPGDec: http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/dgmpgdec.html is the next step. Using this you can serve your DVD files through AVISynth (some encoders such as HCenc (a very good freeware mpeg2 encoder) and a few automated GUI type applications can also take DGMPGDec input but that is besides the point).
From now you can re-encode your video to whatever you like and ply any filters you like to them.
If you have not used DGMPGDec before then you may an example script so here is one I used the other day to encode a DPG video.
The first line is probably all you need but what the hey.
If you have to deinterlace your video I would first try and use AVIsynth's reduceby2() filter as DVD res is well above half DPG.
Code: |
mpeg2source("F:\GA\EP7\EP7.d2v")
#DGBOB(order=0, mode=0, thresh=10)
reduceby2()
#trim(200,0)
BilinearResize(256,144)
Resampleaudio(32000)
changeFPS(24)
audio=nicAC3source("F:\GA\EP7\EP7.ac3")
audiodub(video,audio)
|
You may be interested in DVD subtitles, they are actually just pictures included with the DVD so you will have to OCR them out (you could just rip them and then hardsub them back in but that may not work too well for the DS), some good OCR software comes in the form of Subrip (you can also rip subtitles from normal video files using this, the format it uses as standard (SRT) is also one of the most popular subtitle formats): http://zuggy.wz.cz/
You will probably want to do some editing and while subrip has some features subtitle workshop is a good way to go (be warned it does not handle Unicode well): http://urusoft.cjb.net/

for every vids (MPEG/AVI) i try to encode i got the same "audio conversion failed".
I try to change settings, same error.
I have installed Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 + fix and 2.0 => still error.
I got klite codec pack 2.82 (standard).
Any suggestion?
thx

Anyone consider making a Mkv to DPG converter yet? TONS of fansub groups are using this new format nowadays. Support for selecting which subtitle file and audio file (since mkvs can have multiple audio tracks and sub tracks in it - a container format) to use with the video file when converting would be nice.
#115951 - dantheman - Sat Jan 20, 2007 7:15 pm
You would lose some quality, but you could use AllToAVI to convert the MKV to AVI with your selection of language and subtitles. Then go from AVI to DPG.
#115954 - Firon - Sat Jan 20, 2007 7:27 pm
You have two choices, unless you'd care to code a new program to do it: 1) demux the subtitles and choose the language you want in Haali (audio language priority in its options) 2) remux it to another mkv or whatever with only a single audio track of your choice, and demux the subtitles.
Alternatively, you can fix VSFilter's code so it supports embedded subs and make an AviSynth plugin to select audio language. :)

Yeah, the lack of subtitle support annoyed me too after buying a 4GB card mainly to watch subbed movies. MKV does seem to be a very popular format.

There's really no way for us to support it right now. All you can do is extract the subs with Virtualdubmod or mkvtools before encoding. That's what I've done for all my encodes.

Any support for flv files yet? I'm using dpgenc, but the video quality is meh, and it lags badly. :/
#116675 - FAST6191 - Sun Jan 28, 2007 4:01 am
FLV is just a container and they tend to use fairly rubbish codecs/standards (from a quality standpoint) and less than optimal options for them, I do not really know of many apps that support it as their only output so I assume you are working with youtube-style videos. Before going on it is worth mentioning that google video often allows you to download the original file so be sure to look and see if you can do that first (transcoding once is far more preferable).
Youtube uses flash video (given the flv extension) and it is usually well suited to conversion for the DS (sizes are similar, video is rarely interlaced, suitable framerates often used).
To convert this sort of video you will need two things:
1) A way to grab the video:
Firefox is the way to go here and there exists quite a few plugins to do the job:
https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?q=youtube&type=E&app=firefox
There are about 10 different ones available with videodownloader and unplug being highly recommended.
If you use another browser you can use the following site to download instead:
http://keepvid.com/
2) A splitter and codecs to enable you to play it back (there does exist seperate players but this is a good method):
Gabest (author of media player classic amongst other things) comes to the rescue with FLV splitter:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303
If you have not installed a splitter/codec manually before it can be done using the CCCP insurgent:
http://www.cccp-project.net/
FFDshow (linked with CCCP Insurgent above or you can try the tryout versions: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/ ) can be used to decode FLV video although media player classic has some support for decoding FLV (under codecs set FLV1 to be decoded with libavcodec).
Using the both of these you are now able to download and watch flash video from youtube style sites, a nice added bonus is you can now use the post processing features of things like FFDShow (you may wish to turn these off when it comes to re-encoding, especially if you are using other improvement filters).
Batchdpg should support it right off the bat now but if you prefer the manual approach:
You will need to use AVIsynth?s directshowsource to enable you to open it and you will need to set FPS=something (it is best to use the original frame rate which can be found out from the options available in media players, graphedit or simply GSpot) and convertFPS=true in the options for it.
It is also a wise idea to resample the audio en route to either 48 kHz or another typical value 32kHz or above or you will probably end up failing to re-encode (if you can using avisynth?s killaudio() and then dubbing the original audio is a good way to go for youtube uses mono MP3 @ 22050 Hz and 64kbps which usually sounds awful to say the least).
A lot of the time flv video will not be mod8 or mod16 (dimensions a multiple of 8 or 16) so you will either have to use addborders or crop to get it to size, using crop is probably the best method as most codecs have difficulty with black borders appearing halfway through a block.
If the video is interlaced you will probably not be able to get away with the usual reduceby2() trick and instead I suggest a bob deinterlacer if you need it.
Although you can avoid using it you may want a flv demuxer:

Apologies for the double post but I thought I would share my butchery of BatchDPG 1.3 beta1, I replaced Bepipe with the new SoundOut and consequently removed the need for .net (as well I hope upped stability significantly):
First things first this is a proof of concept build and prior to this I had never used autoit so beware of falling debris, I have no idea if I will keep up with this either (I much prefer encoding of DPGs by hand).
I will also assume you have avisynth installed and it comes as a plain zip containing only batchdpg + source, mencoder, VSFilter.dll, media info and the headermaker.
Preface:
I first started messing around with batchDPG when it was a frontend for DPGtools, before long it was an encoding tool in its own right. Eventually avs2wav (part of the audio encoding toolset) was replaced with bepipe which brought a reliance on .net (and marginally improved stability), as it looked like it was there to stay I figured I would try my hand at replacing it. The new soundout module for avisynth ( http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120025 ) being, in my eyes anyhow, the perfect replacement.
Due to my laziness and inexperience with autoit I decided that joint stereo should be forced (a brief scanthrough of the code seems to suggest nothing has changed though), the option remains on the GUI but it will do nothing.
Other than that I have only ran rudimentary tests on the app (standard low Xvid-MP3 avi file and a high action wmv from gametrailers) and it appears to work fine.
Download (my hackjob to the source included in the zip), feel free to share the link:
http://www.4shared.com/file/12441902/3dbd4...s_batchDPG.html
My fork (if I can be called that) is from the BatchDPG v1.3 beta 1 as that is the latest source I could find floating around (in all honesty I did not look very hard for a later one).
You will need to install soundout as well (simply copy the DLLs to the plugins subdirectory of avisynth):
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120025
I would make them load from batchDPG's directory but that can be another build (if anyone wants to try just add them to the avisynth script section: lines 230-241, context should be evident from adjacent lines dealing with subtitles), I could add OGG support as well (SoundOut supports it) but that would also be another build.

I made a new version based around 1.3 beta4.5 so it now sports DGP2 (courtesy of the version boost), DPG3 (ogg audio support) and a few GUI changes.
Grab it here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/12659571/57f3d49f/21_03_2007_FAST6191s_batchDPG.html
Source is not included as it is lurking in my mess of directories somewhere but a decompiler comes with autoit.

I used to able to convert my videos but recently i'm not able to do so. I dont remember installing any programs that might jeopardise it...
My error msg ---> Resize: Source image too small for this resize method (D:\XXXXX)
Anyone?
#125882 - chuckstudios - Tue Apr 17, 2007 9:49 pm
Umm... Change your resize method then?
There's a box which lets you choose it...

None of the drop down menu for resizing works =/

Hello to all!
Let me get to the point here, I am having "audio conversion failed" problems and can not seem to fix it. I tried a lot of things but only onces it was working. Though that's for later, first what I have done:
What I have done, from top to bottom:
installed batchDPG, installed avisycth, I already had .net 1.1
.net 1.1 + fix from windows update(some time ago) + my codec setup(no packs)
This gave me error
I found version 1.2 of batchDPG and installed it
This gave me error
.net 1.1 + fix from direct download over the already installed version.
This gave me error
found out I needed to but avisynth.dll in system32 folder
This gave me error
removed all my codecs and used k-lie pack in default settings
This gave me error.
reinstall everything(batchDPG, avisycnth, k-lite)
This gave me error
reinstalled k-lite using the "install all" profile
This gave me error
Found version 1.3 beta of batchDPG, and installed it
This gave me error
I found a bigger avisynth.dll file with the 1.3 beta, so placed it in system folder
This gave me error
removed batchDPG and installed version 1 beta 1
This worked, I had one error but it still made the file <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I did the 'version 1 final' install over the beta 1 install
This gave me error
I gave up and decided to post here
standing by.. :P
I hope you guys can help, I don't know where to look anymore.
Perhaps I should use beta 1? :P
Thanks in advanced,
Dommel
edit: I have tried AVI, MPG and MP3(diffrent error though)

I'm receiving the same error message as ChiongZ. I'm using version 1.0 final from http://ls5.citizendeleted.com/?Download (ls5.cydonianknight.com is down and squatted). I have the latest Defilerpak installed which includes ffdshow, and latest AVISynth (2.5.7).
Mysteriously, I can encode OGM and MKV just fine, but not AVI, MPG or FLV.

haven't heard from the author for a while, but someone else released an anofficial version, batchdpg 1.44... it seems to work great there...you can google it easily
#150800 - Tikker - Tue Feb 12, 2008 11:39 pm
yup, that's definitely a different version from what I have
off the top of your head, do you know if it supports multiple cores for encoding? that's the only thing I was hoping for over the current version I have
my japanese/korean/whichever asian dialect it is/etc keeps me from reading his page, heh
#150803 - JLsoft - Wed Feb 13, 2008 12:08 am
Yes, there's a setting for the # of cores to use in 1.44 Unofficial.
I also have what I guess was the last official beta (1.3b5 MTv3) version I could find back when I was messing around with it, and it also supports multithreading.
#150811 - dantheman - Wed Feb 13, 2008 1:11 am
Last I heard, the multithreading option in Firon's latest release didn't work correctly, though the option still remains present in the GUI.
#150823 - Tikker - Wed Feb 13, 2008 2:54 am
there's the option to set number of cores, but setting it to anything other than 1 results in a lockup
edit: just verified that 1.44 does the same thing.
