What besides the voltage not being variable (switching to the 5 volts) would be the major difference that would cause the GB/GBC games not to play on the Game Boy Micro?

One hypothesis is that the Z80 clone CPU and GBC PPU were removed from the Game Boy micro's CPU entirely in favor of circuitry for the adjustable volume and brightness.

The GBA uses the GBC's sound system, so at least some of it must still be there. Probably not enough to actually run a GBC game, though.
