I don't know of a MIDI lib, but I've built a tool that converts MIDI files to a custom format, and plays back this custom format using sound channels 1-4. The code is very rough, but you're more than welcome to it. Just send me an e-mail or private message if you are interested.

I've also heard about an app called Boyscout wich uses all four DS channels (2 sine, 1 noise and 1 wave). The app is in tracker style and comes complete with an SDL for the tracker format (if I remember correctly).

Might be of some interrest?
