I have a weird question...
If my game requires the use of a custom piece of hardware (a homebrew cart with some "extra something", in this case), will the judges allow the submission if I can provide them with the hardware? I can also provide assurances that it won't hose up their console. :)
Thankee,
-Scott

Special hardware will be considered on a case by case basis...Let me know what you had in mind.

Feel free to post your ideas for the compo here (or just let us know you are thinking of entering) so we can get a feel for how many people might enter and on what systems.

Do I read right that the entree fee is $70? (confusion on wording)

Okay, not really :)
There is no entry fee. Donations to the prize pool are welcome and encouraged though. Every bit donated will make for a more exciting compo.

I'm thinking of doing something for GBA, but doubt I'll get round to it, or have an idea..
#61588 - Palamon - Mon Nov 21, 2005 9:20 pm
Can you use ripped commercial sprites in your games?
I know Santa made a guest appearance in Secret of Mana, as well as raindeer and various snow enemies.
Not that I am going to have time to enter the contest, but in case I want to enter any future contests.

Original content (Satire will be considered fair use). |
So, no then. But I guess you could just make a few pixels different..

Neat competition. There don't seem to be any limits on filesize in place... anyone hazard a guess at what a reasonable size is? Homebrew stuff doesn't usually consume much space, anyways. (unless you put uncompressed music streams on it or something, eheh)
Er, and altering a few pixels certainly isn't a copyright loophole >_>

By 'a few' I meant base your image on the original, but vary it greatly enough for it to be able to be classed different.

I htink the judges all have decent sized flash carts, so size is not an issue within reason (32MB <-- random number)

No emulators, media players, or straight ports of old games please |
I plan to basically port a classic game engine and lay a christmas theme as I will be starting development too late to take the risk of creating a new concept - unless I manage to think up something clever. I do however hope/expect to add some conceptual constructs to spice up the gameplay.
Will this score poorly because of it or do you mean that that straight ports of classic games are not wanted? I am under the impression that you want a new type gameplay as you state, "originality and entertainment will be the main focus".
#63378 - dovoto - Mon Dec 12, 2005 4:16 pm
Cant really judge it before i see it. Yes originality is greate but I dont expect any major gaming paradigms to be shattered in the compo so you are probably safe if it is similar in game play to another game. I think i mentioned that porting and existing game but redoing it with a christmas theme would be cool (I think i even gave an example of such on the compo page).
You will probably be able to tell yourself if the art feels hacked in. Very few complete games make it into these things normaly so submitting one even if it is somewhat non-originaly will likely place near the top.

I think I will enter a game for GBA - my biggest problem is music - can we use some content from modarchive? (with appropriate permission from and credit to the musician)

certainly...any content is welcome as are any third part tools (map editors, pre made graphics engines etc..) Just make sure you are not using copyrighted material (ie ripping graphics or music from games).

Cool - I will try to do the music myself - but suspect that time will NOT permit!
I have my own game concept and am blogging my progress for those of you who may be interested. Yikes - only 19 days left!!
Edit - Time did permit - I was able to incorporate the soothing sounds of my electric guitar!

Do the games need to have sound in them, I have not done any work with sound on the GBA before, let alone anywhere else.
How big of a penilization would occure if no sound exsists?
#65203 - keldon - Sat Dec 31, 2005 1:57 pm
Maybe try to get at least a signal beep working it's not that hard. I got a basic 2 channel music player done in a couple of minutes with pauses and variable lengths. But then I play music so I had no qualms about gettin this done quickly. I would send you the source code but it is in my laptop which happens to be in jamaica right now - if I can find a worthy backup then I will send it to you.

In that note i hope your timezone is many hours behind mine =)
EDIT:
I have no suitable backup - I only backed up from the dell not the ibm; well I will still have a look. I am quite upset annoyed because my dad should have told me - well I am sure I have it backed up somewhere other than on the laptop itself.
Well if anything ask for help here; it will not take you that long to get music up and running. I will be doing my sound sometime near 01/01/06 0800 GMT if I manage to get my submission up to scratch so I am not sure if I can help you at all. But there are libraries which may handle this.
#65207 - MonkeyBoyDMG - Sat Dec 31, 2005 3:14 pm
Ok after some slight reading and a few hours of work i managed to create a simple sound player, it is a few beeps i managed to get it playing jingle bells in the background. Although it is very poor quality but it fits with the theme of the game.
I am going to send it in now. i don't know if it works on a real GBA, i am away from my regular pc so i don't have acess to a parrallel ports so my xboo doesn't work. Hopefully everyone enjoys.
EDIT:Ok i just posted my game on my web site if anyone would like to try it out it would be apriciated. i know it works on emulators i wanna know about the real deal.
http://tordre.t35.com/TXT.rar
It also includes the sources if you want.
I also guesse a small introduction would be needed it is a Text based adventure game for the GBA that it is entitled "You Save Chritmas". It also fits in multiboot so it is small.
Well time for me to email it to dovoto. I wonder would you like the file or a link to my file.
Thank for the offer of help and i wish you many good things in the new year.[/url]

One of the sponsors of the Drunken Coders comp is having a spring competition for DS and PSP. http://www.neoflash.com/compos.htm

Unfortunately, the Nintendo DS division is for DS-mode only. So much for whoever reassured me that most Nintendo DS compos would allow for GBA entries :(
