How do I use Photoshop 5.5 to save an in 256 color mode? Everytime I do it, I seem to end up with a grayscale model.
thanks!

Does Photoshop support "indexed" color?

I certainly hope so. otherwise I have majhor problems. All my tiles and sprite are made in PhotoShop. To change between RGB and indexed go to Image | Mode | Indexed Mode. Make sure you choose the right palette.

Perhaps if you upgrade to Photoshop 6 or 7 you can "save for web".
There you can select 256 colors and so on. I think you'll have to save in gif, but doesn't some of the converterprograms support gif?

Photoshop 7 (and 5 as well if I remember correctly) can save as .BMP or loads of other formats.
Use "indexed color" to set the palette. Then you can let Photoshop work out a fixed palette of however many colours you want, or you can load a swatch file (.aco on the mac) which is a precompiled palette made in photoshop, and use that for your bitmap.
To make one of these palettes, just "build" one in your swatch (by cutting, pasting etc) and you'll find a "save Swatch" option in the swatch menu, where you can save your .aco file...
HTH,
ctrl-k.

In version 7 it's:
Image -> Mode -> Indexed Colour
Palette - Choose the best (Preview updates)
Colours - 256
Dither - Choose the best setting for the image
Hope this helps.

1) Place all of your sprites in one big image.
2) Paint the background layer black
3) Convert the image's mode to Indexed Color and flatten all layers.
4) Access the Color Table option (palette) and save the palette. This will be your sprites palette.
5) Select one of the sprites using the rectangular marquee tool. Copy the sprite including the background (copy merged), and paste it onto a new image.
6) Convert this new image to Indexed Color. In the Save dialog box, under Palette, field Forced, select Custom. A new dialog box is displayed, select the Load button to load the sprites palette you previously saved.
7) Select OK twice to save the sprite
8) Repeat steps 5-7 for every sprite in your big image. But you won't need to load the sprite's palette anymore because Custom is pre-selected for you.
Hope this helps :)
